Welcome back!
Before I get into this video, I should let you know know, I will be winding down with the Fiji footage… it’s time to move on and grab some new foils and boards! Enjoy the videos we have left, I have really loved the Fiji chapter!
I’ve been back out and about traveling again and just enjoyed the Western Australia race week in Perth!
I went along to the races and had heaps of fun and will be looking at doing some more travelling and racing again in the future. I highly recommend you check out Perth as a downwind destination during the season. I got some footage so there will likely be some vids.
That said this run was great. I think I regretted not having the 60cm fuse on though. The 56 cm fuse felt a bit leveraged with the bigger stabiliser, which felt a bit sensitive in turns and pitch stability and didn’t like going fast. Maybe just too much Foil, too close together.
Great conditions though if not a little crossed up. Good energy and some great textures to play with!
The ocean is an ever changing seascape of fun! I can’t wait to see what’s next!
Be good guys, stay strong!

Thank you all for the comments about the droning. 🥹It’s been a fun journey learning new tech. 🤙 🚀

Yes Thanks for all the fun you two have given me watching you while I eat my breakfast. It has be delightful. I like it when you show yourself falling because it makes it much more real. Allison Cheers to you for doing a great job!!!
Thanks mate! I appreciate the message. I’ve still got some footage I’ll release, maybe I’ll do throwback thursdays or something! It will be good to mix things up. Be good 🤙🤙
Thanks for the variety of vids from Fiji. Clearly Allison improved her camera skills along with your production quality. I really like the blend of voice over and mic on the paddle. Your vids are a great distraction while the snow is falling. Looking forward to your next saga. ✌️🤙
Thanks for saying. She’s done great and is a quick learner. Having the drone made me more excited to add some production to the vids, I still like watching the raw GoPro ones though too. I still have some Fiji footage banked and will upload some as I can 🤙🤙
did you ever do flat water paddle ups?
I have but I find them incredibly draining. I’m also not sure I have the connective tissue stability in my shoulders to do them. Are you on the journey? 🤙🤙
@@downwind_drifter yes i am.
@ awesome! What gear have you got?
@@downwind_drifter kalama 7'10, progression 200.
@ nice!
Bit jealous of your weather right now! Did a beautiful dw run near Glencoe, Scotland yesterday, the mountains are all covered in snow and the scenery is stunning but I couldn't feel my hands during the walk in. Lucky we have to work so hard and warm up real quick. Out of interest have you had much time on the old ART1099? Been using the 1180 heaps and love it but always used the 1099 for wing DW previously and thinking to go back to it for SUP. My mate used one the other day and reckoned the paddle up was easier than his Spittie 1100 as it felt less draggy and he felt like he could chase down the trough easier?
I had a lot of wing time on it. I used it a bit for paddle up practice a long time ago. As as far as downwind runs, I only recall using it on one specific run. I found it a very small Foil for me. There was a lot of stress from trying to maintain the bottom end… I didn’t want to risk stalling. It’s plausible that somebody could find it easier than the 1100 Spitfire, but not for my style of paddle up. I found that the 1201 was basically the replacement for the 1099… That sounds freezing and very much unlike Fiji! I trust you are taking good precautions with such cold weather, I start taking things more seriously during the New Zealand winter… Bad things seem to happen much faster in the cold. Be good, be safe and thanks for the great message🤙🤙
It seems you are in Fiji since a long time. Not too hurry to try the Fireball?
Yea, Fiji is like my second home. I have some fireballs in my position as I write this and im am stoked on them. It has taken some courage to use the smaller ones (for me) dw and I have been rewarded! You’ll likely be stoked with the 1070 coming from the 1099? How is the 72mast going?
@downwind_drifter You have a good memory! Yes that's me coming from the 1099. I rode the fireball 1070 once on a surf foil session and it was insane! Pretty bad conditions but a lot of fun anyway. Short period, side shore wind, seaweeds at the take off place and 5 degrees 😅. But when I managed to escape the seaweeds the pumping ability was so nice, not harder than the 1099 at all, I really enjoyed connecting a lot of waves. Crazy 😍 And yes the 72 UHM changed my life even with bigger foils. I should get proper waves conditions this weekend to surf foil it again. I don't have conditions to downwind it currently but I'm sure I will get few soon. I can't wait !
@@arnaudnaiwko awesome report. I downwinded the 1070 twice now and I too love it! I've also used a few other sizes and they are equally good. Let me know how it compares to the 1099 for you downwind when you've had some time on it. I imagine it totally replaces the 1099 and then some. 🤙🤙
sync clap for the drone. so good haha
It has gone array a few times when either of the cameras has failed to have the clap in picture 😅
I don't understand how you can go upwind with a 2.8 in 4-11 knts of wind it baffles me
Because he’s using the 1401
11kts, I’m feeling fully powered! 6kts I can just get on foil… 4kts if I’m up I can likely maintain flight but need to build speed somehow to creep upwind or more than likely just not downwind 😅 1401 and other such foils help, but also just the tactics that dw teaches you come in very handy in light wind! What’s your experience with wind ranges?
@@zacharysprunt3398your not wrong! A few other factors too mixed in there but almost anyone can use these ranges with some practise with the 1401 or similar. Have you got a 1401 yourself?
Nice description 👌. Great run when you say easy to be over foiled what aspect range can you get away with do we need to be at around 12 ,10, 8, Another great share loving the "hold up wait a minute ". Good bumps brother 😊
🤙🤙 I think for ar8 I’d want lots of excess power around me. 10ar I’m having fun hooking turns and not thinking too much. 12ar is similar to 10ar but if ridden efficiently will reward me with effortless linking. All of those numbers can be tossed away though through user error, but the equipment itself has it in it! Are you on the new board?
@downwind_drifter great explanation 👍 Yes,starting on the new board, starboard 7ft 10 140l I have a front foil (gong curve xxl h) it's 8.5 ar for 1600cm2 by 1150 wide and 20ish mm thick for my biggest foil . I have been straps off trying to learn to pump properly for the last few weeks on that, and a 10 ar 1150cm2 for 1080mm wide veloce v3 xl . It is ice and snow here so will be doing wing and drop anchor and sup foil for a few months until it warms. Thanks for help as always appreciated 👏
Please downwind the 1401, pause vid and draw. why is the 1401 not the best? I just got the 1401🎉
Good video! It's unusual to watch you struggle (I thought it was only us mortals that did that). Anyhow, practicing struggle sometimes is all there is. My Spitfire's (1000) speed was improved with a shim. The 1180 doesn't backstall as easy as the 1000 did. Always learning something from your terrific videos though!
@@drbfitk366 thanks for the great message! I havnt seen a 1000 spitfire? I still have bad sessions, all it takes is a bit of fatigue or stress as far as myself. Changing gear or getting mast placement wrong can play into it too. Then there is the environment… currents can wreak havoc with foil boards and cross chops and such, dirty water. There’s so many things at play 🤙🤙
I don’t know what I was thinking (I wasn’t 😬). I meant the 1100 Spitfire. I found it particularly pone to backstalling if I wasn’t upto decent speed on backside of wave. The 1180’s slower stall speed much more forgiving!
@ yea, I’m with you 🤙🤙
Im 48y (85kg) and wife is 46y (65kg), we started SUP journey just 18 month ago and got very involvet so we have 8 supboards... I believe SUP foiling is our must next stage before we get too old. Our conditions are small lakes with so low winds that we overtake most of sailors here. And the nearest sea is 350 km away. We would like to buy a dw board for most easy flatstart and pumping but not downwinding or shorestart pumping. Is that formula where weight x1.5 = volume would be different in this case? Would I be gambling alot to try a 94 litre, 7'8" long 17" wide board for my weight but helping my wife for not exceeding her stats? Our experience is: we padle 25' racing sups, and ocasionaly on holidays use inflatable surfsup in the sea with small waves. Thank you.
@@ramunasbajorinas7686 I’m far from an expert with flat water… here’s some thoughts Flat water is likely the easiest environment to use a board, I’d take advantage of that! Narrow will be your friend, as narrow as you can manage. The longer the board the easier it will be at first* for gaining speed and such and not getting in the way of gaining enough speed for you foil to activate. A longer board is heavier though and will hold back your pumping… so this has to be weighed against the ease of getting on foil. You might be stoked for a bit getting on foil but will likely get frustrated from there. ( but this stage can take a long time so it might be worth getting one narrow long board and one narrow shorter one eventually for your wife) Volume won’t play as big of a role in flat water some thing in the 110-120 might be ok I have a 9’6 Armstrong performance board, that would like would likely suit your purpose, I’ve considered it as a touring board myself for getting out for some fun… but it’s not something you’ll likely grow into as when you get better you’ll want to pump something smaller and smaller might even be easier to pump up with s bigger foil… I just re read your comment, so you have 8 non foil sups right? And this would be your first foil board? Do you have any foil experience?
I dont have any experience in practice with foils, I just keep reading and watching everyday for last few months. Our Baltic sea is very mushy, and surfboarders are very strugling, and when I saw one surffoiler zigzagging arround them, that very impressed me and since then I cant get no sleep :) Thank you for a superfast response by the way :)
I dont have any foil yet. Yes 8 SUP, 2x allround for white water and guests beginners, 2x touring to get child on, 2x racing for getaway from the city alone, and 2x surf boards.
@ okay well that changes things quite a bit. The foil adds a lot of stability to the board you’ll be shocked with how narrow you can go. Given that you have some sup experience you might have a chance of paddling up onto Foil but I’m guessing it is going to be way more difficult than you likely think. Foil’s have really improved over the last four or five years which is in your favour. But they will still feel very slippery and hard to use at first. Most of us felt like it would be an impossible task to learn upon first feelings. Foiling requires a few things to give you almost a necessary head start, one of those things is being towed behind a boat with a Foil board. I don’t think you can skip this step realistically. You want to be on something like a big winging board too not really a downwind sup board as this is very hard to tow. Next I would consider buying a wing for Wing Foiling, this will give you good time and a good time on Foil and I think it’s the easiest approach into foiling. Realistically it can take years to learn how to pump around on a foil. Thoughts? 🤙🤙
Picking up lots of tips from your vids. Keep them coming, really appreciate them. Would be great if you could add wind speed and sea state to your start info 🤙
@@Samlsb80 I often mention extra bits in the description but I think you’re right, I could add it to the start screen data. Great idea! Thanks for sharing the Stoke 🤙🤙
Great stuff, thanks for making these videos! I think you looked markedly faster on this foil, overtaking the bumps and less weaving (and thus making the run less fun?) Drone work is exceptional!!
@@grendel95 it was less surfy for me… and in these conditions I didn’t gain much from the step down. That’s not to say it wouldnt be a great setup in more suiting conditions, but I’ve been trying the 1100 occasionally for a long time now and I’ve never quite got along with it in dw scenarios. I feel it looses a lot of bottom end to the 1180 and does give much in return. Another plus one for the drone pilot! 🤙🤙
Legend!!! 🤙🤙🤙
@@TylerHolowell thanks for sharing the Stoke 🤙🤙🤙
Something else I find interesting to share: I realized most (if not all) reviews are done by seventy something kg riders. I'm 93kg and, for example, a 1900 cm2 front wing will be perfect in small to medium conditions. Same reason a 350 passenger plane with a much bigger wing can accelerate the same as an 80 passenger one with a much smaller wing. The weight that you put on top of the wing is a fundamental variable, not always considered.
Again, agreed. I’m 83ish kg at the moment and a friend of mine is 93ish. We share a lot of beta and runs and it is obvious how much weight effects us. Eg, I might be best suited to the 1201 on a particular run we have in mind and he is nearly always best on the 1401… sometimes he pulls off the 1201 too though when I do! Major respect to the heavier guys out there making it work. I have tested some foils recently that, if they make it to market, will be a load of fun for heavier guys! 🤙🤙
Absolutely, I have a heap of conversations with people that start like this - you should use smaller gear, Im on a (insert something here it could be a front wing, a hand wing whatever) and you should be too. So my response is - How much do you weigh? The response is (somewhere between 60 and 80kg). So I go - Ok well I weigh 103kg so physics says I probably need to be on a bigger set of gear. But still they tell me Im wrong, so now I just smile and say - Ok sure
Nice one again, but i miss the explaining... less is sometimes more!
@@janschenk85 I hear you! Thanks for commenting 🤙🤙
It seems that a bigger/longer board could have help to get up on foil in the bigger swell; easier to accelerate. As then when you were up, even in the smallest bumps you'd manage to remain foiling. Great video as always
@@marcoscasanueva I agree, I find this board a touch small. I’ve been using another board behind the scenes that is so far perfect! I can’t wait to show it 🤙🤙
Definitely into going smaller and smaller, but it's been in the interest of proving hand paddles don't need bigger foils! Mostly on the Fireball 1000 now, with Skinny 30, which is super easy to get started in any bumps. But I upsize to 1070 and Skinny 40 if it's super light or doing a run in Botany Bay.
@@jordangilbert7757 wow, that’s legit. I used the 1070 today in 25odd kts pair with the 50skinny to help me deal with the takeoffs. I was on a smaller than usual board which is throwing me a bit… and also a longer mast.
@@downwind_drifter Stepping down the Skinny sizes with the 1070 gets more and more speed out of it, with less cost to stall than you'd expect. But once down to 1070 and 30 I find i'd rather just be on the 1000 and the 40 :) Keep up the clips - they're great!
@ yea, I used the 25 a bit. I found it added performance in areas where I wasn’t really looking for it. I’ll re visit it when I’m pushing for speed, for now I like a bit more feel from the system. I imagine wingers will love it! I’m currently cycling through 40-45-50 trying to find my personal sweet spots and align my front foils to rear foils… it’s very circular for me. I’ll lose something from each whether it’s feel or performance and will move onward but once I sample it again I rediscover things I loved about the thing. 🤙🤙
@@downwind_drifter looks tricky on the inside of that reef, interesting how it takes the energy out of the bumps Came to add to this Fireball thread, I found that by far the most interesting foil of Axis. The speed is incredible, but what I found interesting was the effortless feeling to keep that speed. It all clicked. The paddle up is about the same as the 1121 on the 1070 for me, but requires more finesse and softer feet, but very comparable in terms of technicality, the 1070 felt much easier to just glide through flat spots, and the warning before stall is much better. Downside is it is less stable in the water and benefits from longer board, but so worthwhile. On the 40 tail. In short, this explained to me why/how the Code/AFS/Armstrong DW foils were on 650-750cm2, and on Axis everyone has been on minimum 1088cm2 on the 1121, almost double! It was the lack of 13+AR foil. Now it makes sense and the unlock has been interesting. Have since changed to Ultra 750 from AFS, interested in seeing how it compares
@ thanks for sharing the beta 🤙🤙 Inside reef or outside? The inside one sucks everything out of the water, it’s basically flat water on the inside. Theres a few outer reefs spotted around, this was my first attempt at trying to use one to catch a chip in… it didn’t work. I think it was too steep and sucky for me this session, and I can see my stance was too far back.
Mwouuaaaah magnifique incroyable merci Alison great
@@jpb183 🤙😁🤙
Looked a battle. Were you getting sucked with a current into the reef 🪸 break?
@@wingfoilrentals it was steeper at the reef… it wasn’t easy. I was hoping to try something new and to try get a chip in, it didn’t work, at least not with the sized down foil but also my stance was all wrong I noticed. There was a slight current but nothing even close to unmanageable.
I had the same experience last week. My friends were on foils in the 1400-1600 range, and I attempted it with an 1180 and had less fun than they did by a wide margin
@@carldelica3794 it’s a tricky game! You can get away with it sometimes… but then the eventual underfoiled run comes along. I did a run today that ended up an underfoiled run, but more because of my board being a bit smaller than usual. Had I have had a longer higher volume board or would have been less of a problem… I just gassed out on the paddle ups after hitting seaweed 3x I’m quick succession. The paddle ups were costing me as it was with the smaller foil. It’s all a part of the learning s 😅🤙
You’ve been basically posting bay runs, shallow outer reef, relatively easy pop up, bay run to shore …. Initial videos disguised this with careful positioning of the drone, not to expose the shallows… good for you though, have fun…
Quite the opposite, I have been trying to get the reef in every video I can when I’m near it. There has been no disguising. I happily catch the bumps outside the reef but you wouldn’t notice it in the videos if it’s high tide. I love you passion 🤙🤙 be good

Amazing drone footage, Alison deserves some cocktails. I learn every run i watch and appreciate you postiing these . My 7.10 x33 140l starboard arived let the pain begin . Have a great week 😊
I agree, she is an excellent pilot! Thats a very wide board!!! Im assuming it's actually 23"? Thanks Mate, I hope you have good week too!
@downwind_drifter yes 23 wide haha typo. Just hope I can use the1600cm2 115cm wide 8.5 ar front wing to start mind I'm continuing to upwind down wind with wing until I get better at the pump and glide and practice sup foil .
The new video style is great, is there any way you can add the speed-o-meter back into them? That was a nice visual to see what kind of speeds different foils were hitting.
Thanks for the message. There might be a way to make it happen, I've thought about it too but never got around to trying it... I'll give it a go, there's always something to learn.
The struggle is real...that's what makes this sport so satisfying. Great video as usual.
Yea, I can see I was too far back on the board, for at least those starting attempts. I was hoping to get a chip in from the reef to try it out but they ended up being a bit to steep.. I'm better off at the moment in the bumps! Thanks for the message!

Thanks for watching and sharing the stoke with a kind message! Be good.
The drone videography was amazing…props to Alison!! I don’t know what’s more impressive, the number of videos you’re able to put out or the amount of time you’re spending in the water to make them. Either way, keep them coming!! I learned something new every video. 🤙

I'm sure you've covered this before but could you please share the size of your dry bag in liters and share a link if possible? I tried a deflate with the wing folded and lashed to my life vest with mixed success (i think there may have been an extra few kg's in water weight). Keen to try a dry bag next. I have a 3.5m wing with soft handles. Thanks
@@MT-qn8bc 55L Earth pak from Amazon It’s ok, it’s a good size 🤙
@@downwind_drifter Thanks. Do you think it would be worth getting the next size up, 85L? Only an extra 200g weight. I have a 3.6m as my smallest wing and I guess the next size up bag might even allow me to use a 5m wing if the bumps are good in light wind. Can you think of any major disadvantage to getting the next size up?
@ No major disadvantages by sizing up but you’re getting pretty big at 80 odd litres… you’ll be fine with the 55L 🤙🤙
Sweet. Thanks
Several months ago you had a video where you explored braking to stay on the wave as opposed to pumping away from the wave. Is this part of your regular tactics? Why or why not? I've been looking at the nose and I only see it dip when you are not pumping. Maybe the nose action is so subtle that I'm missing it or you don't even know you are doing it.
@@1rovingeye what are you looking for? To maintain glide the nose trim is often very subtle. I’ve added in the stalling and slow riding to my everyday tactics. You probably wouldn’t notice it as I’m not exaggerating it. It is a great tactic to have in your quiver when waiting for a bump to go by! 🤙🤙
@@downwind_drifter Thanks - you answered my question. I put my board on the rack last weekend. Snow is coming next week but I am longing for round 2 albeit with a new foil for lake conditions. Keep up the great videos

Great content! Great spot! Great gear! One question: I recently polished my 1300 V1 which I am riding with a 300/61 Progressive Rearwing (without shim), and it is whistling annoyingly loud! Where do you think that whistling comes from?
Did you polish the stab too? It’s often the stab that whistles. I make sure the trailing edge is sanded flat and square. 90 degrees to the ground. Best to do some research with this and take it slowly, first try swap out pieces to see if you can locate the culprit/s and go from there. Good luck 🤙🤙
The set up looked so smooth on that run : )

Need some advice. I’m 95kg on the 145L KT surf w axis 1300v2 and am still feeling a bit stuck to the water when paddling up. I noticed when I set the board and foil on the ground the nose appears to be up pitched giving me a negative pitch in the water?! Have ordered a set of baseplate shims was wondering if you’ve heard similar issue or advice on baseplate shimming. I’ve already played with stab shimming w some success. Love your vids! And your advice! Keep them coming!
@@marcrlutz thanks for reaching out. When you say stuck to the water, is this during a downwinder or on flat water? I understand your concern. I have not had this issue with the KT boards. A big part of taking off is using gravity to your advantage. That basically means, having some fall available in front of you. If your foil is pointed down a touch you would still be able to use it to your advantage, you need to understand what’s happening first. I think I had this problem when I used the Armstrong 1180 and 72 mast. There is rake built into that mast that points the foil downward a touch. I didn’t understand this at the time and it made my life very difficult. It would seem the faster I went the more I will get pulled into the water. If I had known this issue, I could’ve just allowed the nose of the board to come up a touch more to compensate. This could be in someway what you’re experiencing. It may just take a subtle adjustment. This is going to be hard to explain. What helps me take off is allowing the Foil to fall somewhat. I don’t use forward speed and I don’t try fly the foil upwards initially. I’m waiting for a steep section of water so that I have a trough in front of me, which gives me space to lower the nose of the board and use gravity to help me gain speed. I am not trying to use that speed to make my board Surf. I am using that speed/drop to bring the Foil up to speed. Gravity is one of our biggest power sources out there! If we’re staying parallel to the ground the gravity is fighting us not helping us. If we can tilt downward a touch, gravity is now assisting us, at the same time we are trying to peel the board from the water so that gravity can take even more affect, speeding up the foil as it drops. We then need to turn that into forward speed and lift. It is delicate, subtle and sophisticated and takes time to use this method. This is almost “the trick” I hope this helps, stay in touch🤙🤙
@ wow thanks for such a thoughtful reply! I’m downwinding in the gorge here in Oregon. You’ve perfectly explained what I am attempting to do and I do have success. I’ve recently added a +1deg shim and that helped a bit which told me I was onto something. I noticed on land if I level my board my foil angles a bit downward so just bought a baseplate shim kit and thought I’d at least neutralize this angle maybe even try a little positive angle. Again your content and feedback are awesome! Thank you so much!
