---------------------------------------
Back to my routes!
Basically this was a deflate... case closed.
But then im on a narrow board and one of them new fireballs. Did they work? Yip, ok case closed.
But was it any good? Yes, very good. I sized up the board tp the 120L Ive been using mostly the 110L. The extra size was good, I didn't really notice much difference on the water or on foil. With that I mean it was straight forward to get to my feet and paddle up. These boards are excellent for paddling up it seems even with a large package on your back... (cue edited prison joke) actually better not.
So case closed? yip.
I should say though that I also sized up my foil which I learned to do recently... I mean of all people you'd think that id know that but I caught myself a wee while back on the Fireball 1250 working hard to paddle up. It worked and I got up and the second paddle up was even easy... but the first paddle up was in crossed up water and I had my large package with me (.) and I was thinking to myself - that i had sized up my board for the deflate but then chosen a performance sized foil... I regretted not sizing up the foil too and learned. It learns!
So yea, I sized up the foil system this time and even tried the 60cm crazy short fuse too amongst it.
So case closed? I think so.
Go do some deflates you might actually get more runs in than car shuffling!
oh and one last thing.
I managed to get 8km of downwinding from 12km of unwinding. Riddle me that!!
Be good 🤙🤙 Stay strong!

    This is great. I have never done a deflate. Have you ever taken a pump in the bag with you somyou could go to shore, inflate quickly and do another lap? If so have younfoumd a compact pump that fits the role?

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter 4 години тому

      @@AdamsHadEnough yea mate. If I’m going offshore a long way I take a pump, I use the ppc travel pump. My friend uses one called “k pump” I think, which is even smaller and lighter. I’d never take the pump with me just to reinflate on land as it is a pain in the backside carrying the pump… if I wanted to reinflate on land I’d just leave the pump on the beach. 🤙🤙

    Thank you for all your insight ! You had the 50 skinny on. When do you size down to the say 40 or 30 skinny? How big of a difference is there really?

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter 13 годин тому

      @@drytransfer1939 yea, I’m enjoying the 50 skinny for surfing with the 1350 and 1250 on slightly shorter fuses. 1350 sillyshort a+ 50s 1250 crazyshort a+ 50s ^ that’s for small conditions If I size to the 40skinny I’m lengthening the fuse to compensate. If I don’t, it gets too loose for me. I’ve enjoyed the 1250-1070 with the 40. I’m interested in getting a 30-35skinny for higher performance and will be using them on the 70cm fuse most likely with the 1250 and under foils, maybe not even the 1250… just the 1160 and under. The rear foil make a major difference with the fireballs and most other foils too. 🤙🤙

  • @nice2care
    @nice2care 16 годин тому

    Thank you for the great content! How would you compare the KT Crossing to the North Horizon in terms of takeoff ease and overall feel? Does the concave deck and Ginxu cut make you feel more connected to the foil?

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter 15 годин тому

      @@nice2care quite similar boards. For me the north horizon kind of won between the two. I think the horizon has more forward projection through the water vs the kts and also more stableness. The horizon is also a clear winner in durability. I liked the concave deck of the kt but would change it to a flatter shape if I could… I like the cut out but wish it was a flatter surface, comparatively the horizon feels a bit more on top of the board vs in the board??? I don’t think the cut does anything good for you, besides giving the mast somewhere to sit. I fell like it robs the board of potential continued board dynamics. Instead you have something that is flat and non dynamic. 🤙🤙

    Is it true that the 1350 has a better bottom end than the 1401 whilst also being "turn'ier" at the same time?

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter 16 годин тому

      @@stkl23 great question. It’s turnier for sure. I’ll try test the bottom end of the 1350, my last feeling when I used them close together was that the 1401 had a touch more low end linkability. At that point I was new to the fireballs though. Either way it’s very close. I havnt followed much online recently, who’s saying that the 1350 had better bottom end? Just writing that makes me notice the word better” that makes me think that the 1350 is likely better, but might not have the same low end efficiency by 1-1.5kph 😅 🤙🤙

    Why doesn't the Frank Board have a handle/insert/cut out nor on the bottom nor the top side? Other dw-boards also abandon that feature unfortunately and imagining what beach breaks many of us have to surpass before and/or after the session makes me wonder how that could NOT be a crucial ingredient of new dw boards?

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter 17 годин тому

      @@michaelkihn8311 interesting point. The idea of not having them is for performance, less weight and having a deck handle is horrible and can be dangerous (damaged toes) In defence of the current regime the boards are quite narrow and you can easily get an arm around them with foil attached or without. But I hear you, I can see some people wanting the handle for extra handling options. One can pretty easily add a handle as a home project or order as a custom. Personally I prefer the way it is as I don’t want a handle, I wouldn’t use it in the water… maybe on land for an easy pick up. I do all my on water handling by the foil, it gives me a lot of leverage for control, not ideal if running sharp gear though! I’d be interested in what percentages would prefer a handle vs without. Thanks for commenting 🤙🤙

    • @michaelkihn8311
      @michaelkihn8311 16 годин тому

      @ With "handle" I am referring to a tiny carved-out hole, not a "footstrap"-type of solution nor anything sticking out "outwards". Once messed up my big toe on those center handles of an inflatable SUP.. since them literally wearing boots ALWAYS.. safety first.. The "grabber" prefereably on the bottom side in front of the Foiltrack as in the past .. Yeah, the boards the "professional" guys are shredding are narrow and their arms strong and long 🥲 .. but what about the other people 🥹

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter 16 годин тому

      @ yeah I know the handle you’re talking about. I’ve had toes slipping into the hole before and ended up with banged up digits on my old wing board. Instead of grabbing that handle I find grabbing the mask and then the stabiliser and floating the board on its top surface the best option for me . I guess the Long armed ape would be the best example of pro rider was strong long arms! 🤙🤙

      @ In one of my favorite spots, grabbing ANYTHING of the foil scared the s... out of me when entering and exiting the water! Haha, definitely would prefer that cut out!!! Let's see if/how others react! Some of the spots you are having access to for leaving the water seem like a natural swimming pool! I guess finding a spot to exit smoothly is part of the whole downwind game! 🤓😎💪💪

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter 15 годин тому

      @ I had to think about my exits when I was in Perth, there’s quite a lot of energy crashing at the exit on the bigger days. We were aiming to foil in as far as possible and then jumping off up wind of the board. The board gets let loose but downwind/wave of you and you can kind of wade in as far as possible before taking control of the board. Good for self preference but hard on the gear… these days I put myself first though, if I have to ill set the gear free! If it means getting my feet safely on land from a dangerous situation. Thanks for the ideas 🤙🤙

    Excellent video - Great lighting, commentary. Having the map at the end answers many questions too. Going to watch again later. I've noticed more tail touchdowns since you've been riding the Frank. Likely due to the longer tail. What does that feel like? like an auto-pitch forward to recover down the face of the wave?

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter 16 годин тому

      @@1rovingeye thanks for the great comment! I had someone recently saying they are noticing far less touchdowns with the Frank board! 😅 I personally notice myself touching down far less under normal circumstances… this was a sized up board and a deflate and very trick conditions and first run of the day after a few days off! The frank board has an amazing tail lift that keeps it out of the way it’s also narrow. The feel when touching down is pretty good. Touching down a rail grabs less that I’m used to which I think is actually a lot to do with the narrowness. It does seem to have the same lever to unsettle me. The rear touch down I’d say is barely noticeable. Any recovery movements taken are automatic for me! I’d have to ask my subconscious! 🤙🤙

      Turning with the waves can help to keep the foil in the water. As your finding if you stay vertical the Foil will want to come out of the wave … if you can keep your Board parallel to the wave the Foil should stay inside… It takes some time to build experience with things like Cross swell’s, it all starts to make sense eventually. A 75 mast should be fine. What fuse and stabiliser are you using ?

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter 16 годин тому

      @ great question. I can’t answer it for sure… A shorter mast like the 68-75cm I’d say yes without to* much wobble but likely still some unless your ~70kg The longer sizes like the 82+ you’re definitely better to invest in a new mast vs a large fireball! But to answer the actual question I wouldn’t use the longer 19mm Alu masts with the 1350 due to the likely wobble… I hate any mast flex, I think it ruins the entire system. It’s like foiling on a yoga ball. If one was using the 1401 or similar with the 19mm they are likely to feel the same thing as the 1350fb 🤙🤙

    Hi DD, thank you for this excellent tutorial. I'm into my fourth season and have been doing quite a number of DW wing runs this summer (based on the East Coast across the Tasman). I like your principles based approach and many of them resonate with me (e.g. to follow rather than chase bumps, look for the peaks, cut across, peel off early etc.) I must admit that I use the wing to bail me out. I'm excited to apply your principles. PS: I've been to Nananu i Ra Island near Rakiraki for the last two July holidays. Also scored some memorable trade winds. It's not too far from the Yasawas. You look like you get even more of the tradewinds there.

    G’day, thanks for the vids yet again. I’m mostly riding bay runs (6-8 km fetch) with a flagged out wing on an Art V2 999. Trying to figure out whether to go smaller and bigger V2 or jump into the fireballs. So I got to thinking, I wish I knew the stall speed of each foil. They are never published, yet in flying it is key to understanding any wing (air foil). Now if ever there was a guy who would know the stall speed of each foil it would be your good self. Any thoughts on the topic. For instance, many said that the spitfire 1030 has about the same stall speed as the ART V2 999. It’s not a lot different but the V2 is definitely a higher stall speed. Still love the foil though.

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter 2 дні тому

      @@damien130970 great comment. 999v2 would feel a touch soft for me in those conditions without some good wind! The 1099 would allow me a bit more ease and feel. The fireballs are excellent. The 1070 is likely similar to the 999 but I’d likely size up to the next size up when it releases… especially if you’re enjoying your current foil and want something a touch different. I think there’s too many variables to consider perhaps to try and list the stall speeds of each foil. With time I think a general understanding is formed and most ride the gear to their personal limits rather than the gears limits. I hate stalling out gear! Even for testing… I find it scary for some reason. With a wing it wouldn’t be so bad as you have something to balance against but with a paddle it’s tricky. With that said I have played around with stalling foils somewhat… i’ve tested some of the pump and glides and they won’t even stall, they’ll just softly lower and you can even re-establish on them with a quick unwaiting and diving them as long as you have some mast height left. I think the stabiliser comes into play too with the stalling it maybe stops them from diving/falling backward Some foils stall and during that stall re-power from the fall that ensues. The fireballs have quite a strong low end with the new Foil section. I can’t say much more than that with stalling… I’m sure I’ve captured some of the low wind speeds on my videos and I could probably talk about some of the individual Foil ‘s, but beyond that it would just be subjective. You’ve given me food for thought and I might try and incorporate a stall section to my videos , let’s see if I’m brave enough! 🤙🤙

    • @damien130970
      @damien130970 2 дні тому

      @ agreed, stalling out with a paddle is much worse. With a wing you can often recover or at least remain upright. As I think further and make it more complicated. I only really care about stall for two reasons, how easy is it to get the foil flying and how slow can I go while hunting bumps. But stall speed is not everything. For instance, the spitfire 1180 that I ride (it does stall slow) gives lots of warning pre-stall, which allows you to play on the edge of stall and wait for a bump to form. I appreciate the early warning because with a quick weight shift you can solve the problem. The art V2 999 gives less warning (but still some warning), but it is faster, glides better and turns better. Suffice to say it is a tricky subject and a stall number in KPH won’t give the whole picture of what is better. For instance, as I said before the V2 999 has a slightly higher stall speed then the Spitfire 1030…. But with a wing and a bit of practice it simply requires an extra pump and has less drag, so I reckon I can get both foils up in the same wind/wing combo. Therefore, does it matter that it stalls a bit higher. It’s all fun figuring it out (but bloody expensive 😀). So all we have to do is have a foil that glides well, goes fast, turns well, stalls slow, gives stall warning, recovers well and tells us whether to go left or right to link up the next bump😀.

    • @slappysurf

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter 8 днів тому

      @@wingfoil_mallorca I think the 1300v2 is an easier foil to master and likely better as a beginner. The 1401 can be tricky for a lot of people out of the gate, but if you put the time in, it’s a great cruiser foil for getting from a-b. The 1300v2 is more playful and understandable. Fuse wise… shorter is physically easier but requires a certain level of skill to control. If you don’t have that control then going a bit longer becomes better as you are less likely to make mistakes… The crazyshort 60cm is a good middle ground. You’ll eventually go though a lot of gear as you explore things for yourself, it’s a very circular activity as there is no best option often as we are all so different and even exact setups can be ridden quite differently but different riders… stance plays a big part in this. If paddle Downwinding, getting on foil is your first priority! This often requires many gear sacrifices as far as playfulness… if winging or towing or other methods get you onto foil, you can select slightly more playful gear but that is only true if you can then link sustainably- this is most important once you can get on foil. It’s a long journey and it is hard earned but well worth it 🤙🤙

The 1099v2 would be a fun surfy option if the getting on foil was easily taken care of. I size my foil to ride the bumps, the ocean sets the playing field and there is only so many ways to go about it.
