I was very fortunate to be able to perform with Freddie on alto saxophone as well about this same time, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, at a jam at the Apartment Lounge. I used to sometimes play second alto to Kenny's first in Marcus Belgrave's New Detroit Jazz Ensemble.
where are the video my friend ?
Incredible. You've had a good life. Hang in there.
Saw this same group at Ronnie Scott’s on this tour . I knew they were good but I was 18 and a wannabe bass player. I was clueless to how good this group was . Spoke to Kenny and we chatted with members of the Buddy Rich band who turned up . Kenny started speaking Japanese with the Japanese trumpet player who had a silk Buddy Rich logo baseball jacket on ! He said Kenny spoke good Japanese. The next year Kenny came back with Art Blakey and another top class band . In the other weeks between I saw Horace Silver , Joe Henderson , Elvin Jones , Mcoy Tyner , George Coleman , Ronnie Scott’s was a dream world I mean I used to buy Blue Note lps then the artists would be playing right in front of me
Kenny Garrett is awesome here. I could listen to this all year.
I really dislike his aesthetic conceptions. Don't sounds good to me.
Thx! Unfortunately, the set list is wrong and has several spelling errors on the original video. The corrections are as follows below:

This Swings So Nice. Carl Allen Is Super Smooth.
a Young Kenny Garrett showing why he is one of the greatest alto players ever!
Man I am SO FEELIN that guy in the crowd at 19:14...maybe a young German saxophonist? A musician for sure, I'd bet. What I would've given to be there! So inspiring. Love Kenny Garrett, and Freddie is one of my biggest heroes, but I never got to see him in an intimate venue like this before he passed away.
This piece is so full of texture that a blind person could just about read it with their fingertips. Kenny Garrett is so good in this that it's the sound of mystical flight from 16min on
Great show!
Amazing performance. Hubbard was a giant but has not received his share of fame.
tromly76+You're telling me. I don'r know much about jazz but i can hear how distinct his sound is. He is built like a bull-that helps to play the trumpet when it would make the physical force aspect effortless. It's the same with upper body strength and flamenco guitar and why there are virtually no female players. Not the only reason he's great of course. Errol Garner was a sexual volcano...that same physical tangible behind their sound
It always annoys the hell out of me that the jazz community in general does not give Freddie the praise and credit other greats get. People will always list 10 cats before they get to Freddie. Personally Lee Morgan is my number 1 and Freddie is second. I love all the other greats but for trumpet I will listen to those two cats first. I wish I could have seen Freddie live. He has such a different style.
@@richardturner4074 My top three are Lee Morgan, Woody Shaw, and Freddie Hubbard.
@@erichuang7524 Great top 3. I would add Dizzy to my top 3 as well. In my opinion he took trumpet playing to another level. People forget he was a mentor to Lee Morgan. I am a big fan of Clifford Brown and Booker Little as well.
Don't forget downbeat magazine named Freddie Hubbard the greatest trumpet player in the world Freddy has got his accolades he is and was a great trumpet player if not the greatest when Freddie was on stage when he left the stage he left it all on the stage I got to see him live in the lighthouse in California Hermosa Beach and believe you me he left it all on the stage
I've never been a huge Freddie fan--his technical prowess was awesome but a bit overwhelming for me. That said, this show is LEGIT. There is some serious blowing here, especially from Freddie and Kenny. Check it out and enjoy.
ESPETACULAR!!!!!!!!!!
Mr. Hubbard Endorsed ALL of these Cats...................JAZZ ON!
Golden Times at german TV

In a acoustically weird space with a cruddy old upright a rubbery sounding horrible 80's condenser on the Bass, zee Germans television engineers made a decent mix. Having 5000$ Senheiser mics helps, but still, Mein Gott!! Maybe German television could do some Foreign Aid to the US. Send a couple engineers to Newport. Train their sorry ass sound people? just a thought.
The last time Freddie was skinny. Ha!
