I discovered Freddie's music 2 weeks ago, I'm hooked, it's giving me a major burst of light and Joy, like Lonie Liston, Donald Byrd, Bobby Humphrey

I saw him in Milwaukee in '76. He did things with the trumpet I didn't think were possible. He played so hard, I thought the trumpet was going to fall apart in his hands. Simply amazing!!!

Got to see him live once at a little hole in the wall club just across the DC line in Coral Hills Maryland when I was 17-18 back in the 70's. He was down to earth, sat at the bar between sets and talked to the people. And that cat played his a - - off! My favorite trumpeter from that era. RIP, Freddie.

I hope this gets more views and ears. Freddie's playing has never sounded better and it is interesting to hear the funky grooves.

A young Carlos Vega with a quick snare change in the middle of trading licks at 24:20.. Wow...

This is the same set-up that came to Belgrade Jazz Fest in 1977. Freddie had to have another concert after the festival was over due to an amazing rapport he established with the audience...

Do you remember who the keyboardist was? He was using Billy Childs a lot starting this year.

Even though Miles used to 'shit' on him, I always used to LOVE to hear Freddie... especially when his current band had an 'edge' on it. This music was kinda..soft..MAYBE?!? BUT, it was very groovy, for 1977. Like it was SUPPOSED TO B! He was on the last few legs of his Columbia/Pop-fusion era, which was ONE WAY, in 1970 when it began with 'RedClay,' and SOMETHING DIFFERENT, LIKE THIS, when it ended in 1980, with 'Skagly.' Miles and Freddie ALWAYS believed in brokering new, young talent in their current bands,. WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT LEADERS OF PACKS ARE SUPPOSED TO DO. I LOVE FREDDIE HUBBARD!!! HIS MUSICAL JOURNEY WAS JUST AS VALID, AS MILES' IN THE 70s. NOT a period to b undervalued! Freddie was freaking COOL... REMEMBER DAT SHIT!!!

Watch at 24:24 on "Blues For Duane" how the drummer switches out his snare as they are trading solo choruses!!

+bobmerrillnet Damn.....this is a treasure. Was lucky enough to play at the same h.s. as Carlos a few years later. It was a legendary music program and he was one of the reasons. Carlos Vega also played with Caldera and James Taylor for many years.

It's funky, easy listening, commercial yet artistic, all in the same place, but in just the right measure. I love it. That era was superb, but this era we live in today, is just rubbish, wouldn't you say? Better to just go to sleep and forget about it, or bring back some style again. We COULD do it- more miraculous things have happened.
