Is it alright to keep an average AR chambered for a year? 24/7? With range days around once a week-month? Or do the days of shooting not help reset the spring strength?
Please reply if at all possible
@@otterpop5551 i’ve got no clue I store mine with the chamber empty hammer down but mag loaded because it’s for home defense
@@aidendirtbikes7914 if you arent comfortable leaving it chambered then please do what you want...
But I keep my pistol, 12g and ar15 chambered almost all the time.. I'd rather be 100% ready to use them
If somebody rushes through your door and lunges at you, drawing alone takes quite a bit of if time in those split-second moments... so drawing PLUS needing to chamber a round might(in few situations) restrict you far enough to render you firearm nearly pointless
A trick : you can watch movies at kaldroStream. I've been using them for watching a lot of movies during the lockdown.
My guns have the 'Thor's Hammer" upgrade, I reach out with my right hand and command " GUN !" and it comes flying into my hand. And I wear always a Derringer on a necklace as a neck gun.
LOL!
I need that feature lol.
OHH K
Lol. I think TRex Arms makes that. Right?
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Back in the late ‘60s we were trained to store our revolver at home by opening the cylinder & running one handcuff through the opening. The other cuff was attached to the clothes bar in our closet and the weapon was safe from little hands when we were off duty.
Thats funny
Great way to F' up a cylinder. LOL Oh, you didn't mean running it through a cylinder bore hole. Wheel guns, Arrgh.
I have an old service revolver from my great grandpa. Big Ole 45 with some classic bluing.
As a novice gun owner, this was great intel. I have a storage safe but not a gun safe for my nightstand. Being retired, winning the drawing for the USCCA safe would be wonderful. Thanks for all you do.
Thank you for your kind words, Clark! I wish you the best of luck in the giveaway!
Storing, staging, and, 'transport' was the word you were looking for. That soft case would be good for 'transport' to and from the range or while traveling.
I live in a castle doctrin state and when I get up i n the morning and get dressed , I put on my pistol as a part of my daily dressing. I never go anywhere unarmed. Better safe than sorry.
I also have firearms in strategic areas of my home in case of an emergency.
Me too 😊
Dosen't everyone do that ?
A firearm that is unloaded and stored is not, repeat, not for home defense.
Exactly. It must be loaded and ready, and within a few seconds reach. Otherwise, it's useless. Being in a home without kids, I am never more than 3 seconds away from a loaded handgun at any time.
Would a gun that is stored and loaded with a magazine, but not with one in the chamber be considered a home defense firearm?
@@TurtleGG77 In the personal defense class I took to get a Minnesota permit, the Sheriff's deputy and his retired Army MP father who gave the class told us to keep a round in the chamber.
@@TurtleGG77 So if someone is invading your home, are you going to ask them permission to get your gun out of storage? So... no.
“Perfect addition to any kitchen!” Sounds like he is selling dish washers 😂
I’ll have to talk to my wife about redecorating the kitchen with these
I hope that conversation goes smoothly! ;)
Those are kind of big to be sitting around the house. Any visitor will know that you have LOTS of guns. Life is very different if you don't have kids.
What type of set up would you prefer, Bret?
Yeah, your options expand quite a bit and gun safety gets a lot cheaper if nobody is supposed to be unsupervised in your home except for trained adults you know and trust.
Our safety profile changes even when we have overnight guests and/or contractors in the house on a given day. Not just applicable to weapons staging, but I have a different alarm profile saved for when we have overnight guests than when we don't.
Well, it’s my house. If anybody is visiting me, they just see a safe and maybe my rifle next to my bed if I don’t put it in the safe. I carry 99% of the time, so the only time I have my rifle out is when I’m home, or one of my family members are home. I don’t really have to stage guns around the house since I still carry everywhere in the house. When I take a shower it’s right there under a towel, when I sleep it’s next to my rifle, when I’m watching a movie it’s next to me in between the couch pillows or on me if guests are over. And most likely the guests that are coming to your home, know that you have guns. Or they should at least. My family knows where my firearms are. It decreases the chance of them finding one and shoot it by mistake. Also the fact that I showed them how to use them helps a lot in a situation in which a firearm somehow magically appears on the kitchen counter out of fairy dust. You just have to work with your place. I had people come over recently to fix my A/C. My guns were in the safe, and I was carrying. Did he see the safe while passing through my house? Yes. Did he care? No. What if he flipped out? I don’t care! It’s my house, and it’s the united states of America. You can’t just go into somebody’s house and not expect them to have guns. I would prefer one of those coffee tables that slides and you can hide a rifle in there. Or one one of those wall paintings that does the same. They’re pretty expensive tho, so I’ll either make one, or keep my rifle next to my bed. Stay safe out there!
He did say he had kids… Thus why he has them
Several issues here. 1) “Officially” all guns are always loaded, so chamber flags don’t mean anything. (I take an “unofficial” view. Sorry, Colonel). 2) My stored guns are unloaded. I do used soft cases for the handguns to keep them from getting banged up. Still, I check any gun’s chamber or cylinder when I remove one for a class or the range. 3) I have used a similar electronic lock box. After reading about their vulnerability, I switched to a Simplex-type push button lock box. 4) Carrying at home reduces the need for staging in many rooms. 5) A minor point: cable locks do NOT “reduce access” to a gun. They merely render the gun inoperable (temporarily). If said gun was out, it could (would?) be stolen. If said gun was in a locked cabinet or safe, what would the point be for the using the lock?
Still, reinforcing the idea that gun(s) not under your direct control should be secured is a good one. If for no other reason than to reduce the risk of theft (for those child-free homes).
At the USCCA, safety is always of the utmost importance to us, Doctor. I am glad to hear you take it seriously as well.
well said Doctor
Anyone who has watched LPL knows cable locks are little to no hindrance. Surprisingly easy to get through
Carry every day. Have 2 in bed room, 2 by recliner and the rest in gun room close to front door and loaded. I'm good
That's great, George!
Late to respond to this party but…
I have Two handguns upstairs in strategic places, in two separate electronic access gun boxes (like in the video ). I also have a loaded Remington 870 “police magnum” 12ga with #4Buck, in a locked shotgun rack that I custom designed and welded. It’s bolted into the floor AND wall stud(s), in the master bedroom walk-in closet. The gun would have to be literally destroyed before it could be removed and used against me, but I designed it with an installed quick access locking device for rapidly unfolding “emergencies.” Downstairs there’s another pistol in a hidden electronic gun box, which is hidden in the dog food pantry. Then I always have a gun on me and on the nightstand when I go to bed. My house is like the movie, “The Guns of Navarone.”
Your go-to gun shouldn’t be in any sort of safe. Period! This video is nuts.
Totally agree!
I would also add a motion sensing LED puck light to help you see the supplies in the quick access safe. 👍🇺🇸
There’s no such thing as a quick access safe.
My grandpa always had a 45 colt in a leather holster hanging on the coat rack beside the front door.
Lol, pretty sure most of our Grandparents kept a firearm of some sort by the door. Both my Grandpa's kept 12 gauges behind the front door....we, the grandkids, just knew better then to lay a finger on them or we would lose skin from the hindquarters! I still say education of the young is the best defense from kids getting themselves into a situation with a firearm. If they are taught from youth how to safely handle firearms, and see the damage they can do first hand....they are less likely to want to play with them. Just one opinion I'm sure. :-)
Even as a seasoned gun owner. Great info on Storing Vs Staging.
A question I have.. Stored firearms would ideally be in a controlled low moisture environment (dehumidified). However what is staged wouldn't get the same treatment. How often would you want oil the staged arms? I imagine you would want to reapply a layer of oil on it every so often to avoid rust (as it's a larger factor). What intervals would you suggest here?
Does Brick/Brik have a gun staged in the bathroom and in the garden? My point is that (depending on the layout of your property) staging guns may not be a full solution. Ideally, you have a firearm on your person during waking hours.
Brick you grow so much sense you left the show.
I spend most of my time at my home office, so I stage my piece under the desk with a magnet (without a round in the chamber). It's super fast to access the gun and it's also virtually undetectable (unless you happen to be crawling around on the floor which is highly unlikely). BTW - I know what you're thinking - and no, we don't have any little kids at home.
outbackeddie - Why empty chamber?
@@finngamesknudson1457 Because in a "panic" type situation I need to reach under the desk and get the gun as quickly as possible, and I don't want an inadvertent trigger pull. It's actually faster to recover the gun this way because you aren't worrying about accidental discharges.
Perhaps consider mounting a holster to the desk rather than having the gun directly attached to it? That way you don't have to risk a negligent discharge OR worry about chambering a round in the heat of the moment. Best of both worlds.
@@egarcia1360 I've thought about that but it's quite a bit slower than just racking the slide. But it's not a bad idea since most situations won't require a 1-second response.
@@outbackeddie Interesting, I wouldn't have imagined it being slower. But also note that racking the slide requires you to use both hands, albeit briefly. At the end of the day, though, it doesn't make a huge difference compared to the difference between having and not having access to a gun lol.
The holster that he pulled out of the small safe seems exactly like mine. I think it’s an Exarchy, which seems to be rare.
Awesome video with great info! Thank you, guys for what you do.
Thank you for your support, Chad! :)
This is good information. As of right now, my staged guns are loaded and sitting out in plain sight. New to the game though and I am learning. My kids have been raised around guns and know how to handle them and treat them with respect, so I'm not worried there. I am mainly worried about someone breaking in and finding the ones I leave at home. Now I have a better understanding of what I need to do and I already have my stored guns unloaded and in a safe. I would hate to throw the locks on them since if someone manages to get my safe open or out of my house, they will be able to cut the locks off as well. I am looking into the hidden compartment furniture as one of my staging options since my wife would kill me if I had safes staged around the house.
Staged guns loaded and sitting out in plain sight where you have kids 🤦🏽♂️ no need to mention you’re new to the game, we got that.
Guns out with kids? 😂 and keeping your gun unloaded in a safe renders it useless in a home defense situation
I want a safe in the wall for concealment and space-saving reasons
Your kids are one thing. Their friends who visit are unpredictable.
Any safes you recommend for bathroom use, something with a good moisture barrier?
Stainless steel gun, under the sink hidden behind the wife’s hairsprays and mouthwash, secured in a fast-open electronic key-less combo type safe. I also keep a small LED type flashlight under the sink too.
Ask Michael Corleone.
I cant afford a gun, safe and holter for every rom of my house. How about just carry your EDC whe at home? My friend had a home invasion this morning and had no time to get to his gun.
That is certainly an option, Josh!
@josh R,
Dang Josh, if you have to, tape a gun on top of the fridge, or to the wall in a concealed location somewhere.
LMAO same
So to Josh and the others, I'd remind you the speaker talked about having kids, so his advice is based upon best SAFE practice staging w kids in the home, not necessarily what's affordable and necessary for those without- and some states mandate safes w kids in the home remember. If you've got kids then you know they are horribly adept at getting into things they shouldn't, and sneak around without being noticed more than we'd like to admit. I also have kids and multiple safes for staging, but it took me years of budgeting to get there. If you don't have kids and can reasonably for jd alternatives within your budget, I think you should carefully feel free to do so, but understand the risks of theft as well.
My grandchild stays with us 50% of the time so I'm always on the alert to her in the rooms where I have guns staged. I keep 20 gauge youth model shotguns above the doors in my bedroom, bathroom, utility room and kitchen. I paid less than $200 for each of them and a few brackets screwed in to the studs behind the sheetrock hold the guns easily. I keep all of my more expensive firearms in a safe. I have adt security signs at every corner of the house and one on the front door but I don't have a security system. Just a few cheap and reliable options for you to think about.
Oh and the shotguns are loaded with #6 he loads, NOT BUCKSHOT. If you've ever done testing with game loads you will see how effective it is.
One aspect of self / home defense and I understand everyone’s situation is different is to fortify your house so if a intruder is on your property and attempting to break-in is the warning time you have to get into your defense mode. I’d rather have minutes instead of seconds. Have devices to give you a warning like a alarm system that has trigger sensors . Harden doors that aren’t easily kicked in. 6ft high fencing with locked gates. Alarm systems today are available with up to 150 zones with the capacity of wired and wireless sensors that can be put anywhere and you can code and label each sensor to let you which sensor has tripped. My philosophy is it’s better to keep the criminals outside as long as possible. Remember buying yourself time gives you the advantage to get into the right frame of mind and to work your plan and to go from a defensive posture to a offensive posture. Think your plan worst case scenario asleep at night and you have somebody on your property; how many seconds to minutes do you have to wake up from a dead sleep to jump into action with a clear mind to make critical decisions in a life threatening situation.
Can we talk about staging rifles/shotguns? What options are available there and should it be chambered or not?
That is a great suggestion for a future video!
I keep a 9mm staged in the bedroom with an extra mag (10 red) nearby (CA). I do have a Saint Victor 556 ready, but in a safe, so not my primary. Should I have to continue the firefight for some reason, well all bets are off in what’s next! Thanks for the post.
I home carry along with staging and storage. My carry guns are in a spot where I grab the one I want on my way out the door.
Paranoid
Brock and Brick - Awesome!
All good advice. My only change would be to keep the holster on top of the safe or attached to your pants. Leaving your firearm in the holster requires 2 hand to access and fire your gun because you are goint to have to pull it clear from the holster.. You may have been shot in one hand or on the phone with the police.
I have spoken at length as well about storage vs. staging. People don't truly know the difference on the subject who don't walk this walk every day like we do.
That's right, Deril! I'm glad to hear you are spreading this knowledge on this topic.
What about staging rifles and shotguns
I use a mic holster. It covers just the trigger assembly.
Is it recommended to rack the slide to ensure it's empty and then reset the trigger for storage? I'm hung up on resetting the trigger. I've heard it both ways.
Great stuff! Exactly how I store mine as well. Do you change your 4 digit code periodically to keep curious minds from testing? What's your overall thought process for codes, RFID chip protection or biometric access systems?
That will ultimately come down to personal preference, Danny! :)
Any safe using Chinese electronics are crap.
@@barackblows1942 name one that don’t ?
@@fugoogle5802 I have the made in USA Fort Knox Pistol Safe. ua-cam.com/video/aySpiwntBVw/v-deo.html
Ultimately the only reason you’d need to change the code is if you access it in front of a third party, and they see your code, or if you use that code in other areas of your life, and it has become compromised. However, changing it to “keep criminals on their feet” is rather pointless.
If I go on vacation, sometimes I take my recoil springs and barrels of my handguns with me. If anyone breaks into my house they are still missing parts to do harm. Although I have a gun safe and security system. Redundancy. Plus moving ammo separate from weapons is another good idea. To pack a complete firearm with ammo in a nice little carrying case seems bad while you're not home.
That's a good idea, never thought of that.
I have 1 gun for ccw. Because I’m an adoptive and foster parent, we have strict rules we have to follow. Is there anything against me having it staged on my headboard, in a safe that unlocks by key, passcode, or fingerprint?
I think you should check your local laws
Do you always keep the magazine full? If so, doesn't the spring get ruined after being compressed all the time?
well done. yer efforts are appreciated.
Great video! Thanks for sharing 👍
Rifles are stored in a nice safe. Multiple firearms staged in SpeedVaults in almost every room. Recently I had to store my .45 1911 that sits in my living room because contractors would be moving furniture. So it is 'stored' temporarily in my safe. But my Ruger American is in a SpeedVault next to my bed. It is always open when I am home and my EDC is on my dresser. There is a SpeedVault right next to me as I write this with a SR-40 in it. The only hole I have is my LCP-II that I keep in my kitchen in the holster next to the refrigerator. I don't seem to be able to find a small enough safe for it. Maybe I will design and nice safe for mouse guns. For now, it is in my storage safe because of the contractors, but that should be done soon. I normally am able to fight from any room in my 975 sq. foot home with quick access to all my firearms. Staging and storage is very important. Be responsible with your rights.
That's why I like appendix carry. I am always within 10 feet of my appendix, everywhere I go. 2:21
Seriously, the approach you guys present here is totally "gun nut". A lawyer, or accountant, or plumber with a carry permit is probably not going to make firearms that central of a topic in his life.
I shoot to live, not live to shoot.
But your actual advice is 100% solid.
That is understandable, Fin Jan! Everyone will find their own groove when it comes to carrying and what fits their lifestyle best.
I do lawyering so I can shoot more.
I keep my nightstand Gun good to go with one in the chamber 🫣🫣🫣because I keep a trigger guard holster on it to make sure I don't have an unintended discharge, also! You need to snap off the trigger guard holster. So by the time you have to do that! You should be fully aware of your senses.
Very good discussion.
For home defense, I have mine in a small gun vault with a magazine next to, but not in the handgun. Guess I should put the mag in the gun.
One on my person at all times, 1 pistol on my nightstand, 1 ar next to my bed, 1 pistol on my wife’s nightstand, 1 pistol hidden in the living room, 1 in the kitchen. All loaded and chambered.
Where the hell do you live? Lol
Just wondering what iwb leather and kydex holster that was. Interested
Got me confused when Brick said stored and locked up. It's the staging portion that got me going.
5:29 it's soft and can be easily accessible with a knife...or the zipper lol!
Dude’s got 47 handguns staged in his house 😂
NY reloads 46 times 😂
6:00 Don't even bother putting a lock on a zipper. All you have to do is press a pen into the teeth, move it in a direction to open it and you have complete access to what ever's inside. You can also then move the zipper back over the track to close it up and get rid of any evidence that it was ever tampered with.
very interesting. keep the info coming.
I am glad you enjoyed the video, Dan! :)
..thx guys ... gun knowledge is always good .....don't be that " I know everything " guy ....cheers
What about storing without one in the chamber, but with a magazine in and slide locked open? Is that bad for the recoil spring assembly over time?
I've searched comments, checked the video description, and tried to zoom in on paused video, but I can't find any information on the vaults shown in this video. Can you direct me to these? Thanks, Joe
This is a great video it touched on just about everything you need to do in safe Gun handling
I am glad you enjoyed it! :)
Is it legal to keep a gun in the safe with just the gun and ammo in the same safe with someone who does not have a carrying permit
Lots of good info! Thanks!
How would you “stage” a SAO pistol locked in a bedside Gunvault? Besides full mag inserted, chambered, unchambered, locked & cocked?
What is handprint safe on the left
Good content. Very useful, thanks!
I sent a lever-action .22LR to the company for a warranty inspection. When it was returned to me, there was a zip-tie that functioned as a chamber flag.
Chamber flags are not bad things. Easy to tell the firearm is not in battery and no round in the chamber.
Thanks for the tips fellas! 💪🏼
I keep a loaded .380 on a shelf next to my front door. I keep another on the nightstand next to my bed. I keep a loaded rifle in my downstairs rec room. I want to be able to defend myself and my family from a home invasion, regardless of where in my house I am when the bad guys show up.
What about on the basement under a concrete floor?
I wonder if these gun education videos are gaining extra views these past few weeks.
Why?
State & Location = always be Loaded inside holster @hip..
Brilliant discussion on a very worthwhile topic. We just had a young white male banging on iur back door at 2 AM. He ran off when he saw me, but I was dissatisfied with how long it took to get my gun out of the safe.
Great safety advice!
3:15 had me thinking you made an alec baldwin reference but then i looked at the date of this video. XD
Is there a web link to these safes?
How do i keep my gun ready for home defense but still being legal? Because the law states i can keep a loaded firearm inside my house, campsite, or temporarily place of stay. But yet california says i have to have it unloaded, locked up, and separated from my ammo? What do i do????
Hahaha...Brick & Brock! Good topic guys. Maybe you could cover long guns in a future video. I like to use an under bed 'safe' for those, and would do a video on mine except that may not be a smart thing to make public. ; )
We can certainly take that into consideration for future videos, Robnord1!
+1 for staging of long guns, excellent discussion, thanks
Chuckle, as I'm getting older, I find that my ability to get to under the bed is easy, getting up from that position, not so much. Bad guy would hear my knees cracking and back popping from outside and know he has a few minutes...😃

What is that exact safe called in the left?
Ideas on antique storage in accessible areas? Such as wall mounting display.
That is really your preference for how you would like to store those antique guns, James. I don't personally have a recommendation, but I have seen some very nice gun cabinets. Just be sure you are safely storing that gun so that no one can just grab it off the wall and use it.
Are you looking to store them just for display or to also have some stored with it that can be used if needed?
@@USCCAOfficial thank you for the response. I have a few that I would like to display primarily. Besides the Garand the others are very rarely used. Many people have gun walls but havnt found any stud mounted locking hangers. Custom gun cabinet is on my future list but for now just looking to display 3 or 4 rifles.
Informative. Thanks!
You are very welcome, GamerDaddy! :)
I use zip ties as a clear barrel indicator. Great video guys!
Thank you, Kevin! :)
If u reach in ur gun safe and grab ur weapon by the trigger or anything close to it and set it off, you don’t belong anywhere near a firearm. Can’t believe he said that
Had a guy randomly walk into my house at 8pm while watching TV.. was totally unprepared have multiple home defense items.. luckily the guy just went to the wrong house it was dark he may have been intoxicated.. walked in then walked out.. we were all shocked.. I have kids so everything is locked up.. my wife fumbling with the gun safe as I chased the guy out to find out wtf was going on unarmed.. this was a eye opener for us .. need more practice and more kid safe quick access to a firearm
I feel for you defenders with kids, it's such a thin line you guys have to walk between effective defense and safety of your family
Why was your door unlocked, how can he just walk into the house like that
@@ralphjones5856 right I get it door unlocked. 8pm not very late for us. Sucks to have to have that mentality
Do u store ammo with guns or in a separate location?
Is it a good idea to keep your home defense pistol with the magazine inserted but the slide open? That way you only have to release it instead of racking it. Thanks.
It will ultimately come down to your own personal preference, Felipe.
Might that increase the amount of dust and particulate that can get into the action?
@@elitegrunthuntrThat's exactly the reason why I was asking!!!
@@FRamirez1A I don't do it or advise it. The slide release is often an awkward fine motor skill on many hand guns. Racking the slide may be a complex motor skill, but it is more gross and less fine than mashing a small locking lever. Also, most semi auto pistols are designed to be laid down ON the slide stop lever side (set up for RH shooters). And on many modern semi pistols, the slide stop mechanism is less reliable than they used to be (virtually ALL composite lower pistols). So, from a gun safety perspective, I want the pistol to be employable with fewer and simpler steps AND if I don't want a round in the chamber I don't want one there on accident, either. I have just gently picked up a few modular pistols and had then slide stop fail without even breathing on them or looking at them funny (Glock, Sig, Taurus, Ruger...just to name a few where I've either had it happen to me or seen it happen as a Range Safety Officer or instructor). FYI, I've NEVER seen this happen on a steel frame pistol.
At 8:28, you had the lock in the ejection port and throught the mag well for storage with bolt to the rear. Is it ok to store it like that or have bolt closed? I currently have an ar15 with a lock on it with the bolt to the rear and wanted to know if this will cause any issues to the weapon?
Just use ruger gp100 with 4 inch barrel 357 mag
Since having a gun in your house to protect yourself against the bad guys is touted by many as a smart thing to do, exactly how many seconds/minutes would it take to get a loaded gun stored safely in your home and have it ready to be used it to protect yourself or your family? Is it best to have a loaded gun in a safe by every possible entrance to your house in order to maximize your family's safety? Has the NRA or some other pro-gun group done studies on this issue and published the results? If not, why not?
What is that red handgun?
Brock and Brick?
Carry.in my home access is always.within reach when going to bed the gun is between the mattress and box spring holstered don't have.kids but.my dads solution worked go in his room uninvited and would.not be able to sit down for a few days
Is it okay to store my hellcat cocked?
Handguns are not my choice for home defense. They are good for getting to a long gun. How do you stage a long gun with kids in the home?
Hey guys. While storing, if i leave 17 rounds in my clip. Do you think it will weaken the mag spring to be cramped for a long time?
No not with modern springs
My farm aunt ties on her apron at 5am then slips in her cell, wallet, keys and snub nose. She unties that apron at bed time. Is that a good place to keep her gun ? Her 911 sheriff is 40 minutes away. Thank you, Doug! :)
Rough neighborhood?
Few questions
1) if you have the slide back up like that wouldn't that kinda break the gun in a long run?
2) do you need to wash your hands every time you touch guns?
3) should you use lead or copper bullet for home defense?
Thanks
@@eurofox994 thanks for your answer.

Inside "soft" part of the arm has pleanty blood vessels, making bleeding-out a possibility. The -armpit as well. This could be a killing blow, so make sure that's your intention in those 2 spots.
