      He's not actually a natural in the sense that he just picked it up and was good at it. I was going through his Instagram posts once and in one of the comments someone asked about how he was so good with double bass. His reply was that there was no real formula. He just practiced for an hour everyday for 10 years straight. He further elaborated that that is essentially how he can play drums the way he can. It was just endless practice and nothing else

    Man.. the intro is totally an odd time signature.. You could say it's a 45/16 .. but it may make more sense to break it into 6/4 7/8 and 7/16, or 6/4 and 21/16 (to say it even simpler its |: 4, 4, 4, 2, 2, 2, 4, 4, 4, 2, 2 :| )
    The kick drum is in straight 4/4 though, so this combines into a polymeter.
    Playing this is more about feeling it then trying to count. It is pretty insane, thoug. Later the drummer splits this betwewn the ride bell, kick drum and snare which is crazy! Mario Duplatier is a beast

    • @nickyelovich3872
      @nickyelovich3872 5 років тому +24

      Yeah, it's moments like these where I feel like a time signature doesn't really apply. It's a pattern of note groupings over a steady pulse that is a quarter note, and I feel like it should be felt as a constant force driving forward as opposed to a set number of measures that repeats.

  • @johnshook3341
    @johnshook3341 6 років тому +126

    This song is more of a stream-of-consciousness and emotion from the perspective of someone who is literally dying. That’s why the sounds like someone is in panic, and towards the end, contentment and acceptance. My favorite lines are when he talks about realizing he is having trouble keeping his eyes open(holding on to life) only to realize that they have been open for a long time, which to me, says that 1. He is becoming fully aware that his life is draining, along with his reflexes and ability to control his body and it describes the exact moment someone would lose that bodily control, yet with their mind still very much active and holding on. Hanging on to life, one would have a “don’t fall asleep” type of mindset while laying in your deathbed and reflecting on your life. “I haven’t closed my eyes in a long time” is both in panic that he is dying, yet satisfaction from living a fulfilling life. It’s beautiful.

    The Art of Dying being one of my all time favorite songs I have to say I enjoyed your reaction a real lot and I am going to tell you what I think about it.
    To me the song is structured into three chapters:
    Chapter I - "Breathing slowly, mechanical heartbeat..."
    It tells about how machines and technology are taking away a whole lot of our lives. We don't go out and socialise but sit at home and watch TV - the machine is doing all the thinking for us. The music being disgusting, bulky, awkward and difficult describes the struggle we have to not give away the control of our own lives and just work in the same mechanisms over and over again.
    Chapter II - "I won't bring no material..."
    This person finds some kind of deliverance in the thought of death being an end to the misery of chapter I. In death all the things controlling our lives are no more. "I can't stomach all this anymore. Once I'll die I will let go of it all and thus have an easy joyful afterlife".
    Chapter III - The instrumental outro
    This is their view of the afterlife set to tune. It's a soul travelling lightly through space. Free of all the material stuff that chained it throughout life.
    Having tried to describe it now, I once more realise how this song is just beyond words for me. This is also what makes Gojira really important to me: it's not only awesome music but it's a view and a mindset about life, death and the role of humans in nature.
    Keep it up!

      My advice for Ryan... I'm a huge metal head and I didn't like the song at first either. It's off beat rhythm is off putting at first for sure, but the more you listen to it the more it grows on you and you enjoy it more like a fine wine, just give this a few thorough listens to yourself and you will be slamming this jaunt in your car like it owes you money for betraying your brotherin.

    • @oldcat7
      @oldcat7 5 років тому +3

      @@gnarkilleptic4871 Very well put. I wasn't into the hardcore growling at all. I liked Metal for a long time but wasn't into this type. I slowly but surely came around to Gojira and love them now. When I first heard this one it wasn't one that was on my playlist. That's happened on a lot of songs for me. Once you warm up to the uniqueness and the undeniable talent of it, it becomes hard to not have it be one of your favorites. It's just on another level.

    SOLUTE!!! You nailed the concept of the song as far as I've interpreted it. To me, Gojira ran with a conceptual message with the song, first, then built the music around it. The band had A LOT to say in this one, which is why it went in so many directions. As far as the intro, the clicking sticking patterns are definitely old school African/Tribal patterns that are designed to start in different places, but weave together harmoniously, creating a revolving/circular sound. Pretty difficult to count - let alone transpose via one drummer on a kit. Then, Mario (the drummer) transitions into the metal version of the traditional version of the African/Tribal pattern - playing the original sticking pattern with his feet, keeping the quarter note with the cymbal (instead of the bass drum), and syncopating the pattern with the snare. Transitioning in and out of that is pretty damn bananas. I never gravitated to this song as much as other Gojira songs (relating a lot with Ryan's initial reaction), but your overall analysis of it shed a new light on the song (the way it was meant to be heard). This song is a conceptual success in my opinion, so - when you look at it that way - it becomes a whole new experience altogether. PS: An album reaction to Gojira would be A-MA-ZING.

    The crazy pattern is in fact in 4/4, you can follow the ride cymbal to stay in time. The kind of structure of the beat is playing:
    3 kicks then a snare x3 (there is a semi quaver rest between each repeat so that’s why it doesn’t repeat on the beat)
    2 kicks then a snare x3 (no rest inbetween)
    3 kicks then a snare x3 (same rest as before)
    2 kicks then a snare x2 (no rests)
    As such, this groove moves across the bar line and produces the polyrhythmic feel you are hearing. When it resolves, Mario (the drummer) then plays 6 quarter note beats of a different rhythm to resolve the whole thing to start again on the beat.
    He is playing there:
    3 kicks 2 snares x4 (bearing in mind, there is a semiquaver rest between the snare drums)
    This is all while keeping time playing quarter notes on the ride, then moving to the crash.
    It’s a very difficult rhythm, to play cleanly while still giving it punch.
    Hope I explained it correctly, if not let me know!

      maxNchicken So I did some digging at drummerworld where the same question was asked. Luke Snyder replied:
      “Its not really 4/4, I'm notating it. [This] is a complex passage trading groups of 3 and 5 16th notes. I started with just the clicking rhythm in the beginning, it is a very long phrase. It is 3 groups of 5, followed by 3 groups of 3, followed by another 3 groups of 5, followed by 2 groups of 3. I attached the midi notation of it as well as a bounce of it.
      If you use the length of that phrase to give your time signature, it is 45/16. This rhythm gives us the basis for the drum part, once the guitars kick in. On each group of 5, the snare plays on the 4th note, and on each group of three, the snare plays the 3rd note. Over top of all of that, the bell of the ride is played every quarter note. This means that the quarter note gets offset by a 16th each time the 45/16 is played through. That means that the drum pattern doesn't actually repeat for 180 16th notes.”

    I had the opportunity to meet Joe and Mario of Gojira (the lead singer/guitarist and drummer) at their recording studio in Brooklyn about 2 years ago before they released their last album. They were doing a clinic and were going over one of their songs. Someone actually brought up the drum pattern in this song, which I was expecting (since i'm a drummer as well). And Mario drew the notes on the chalk board and made it a little bit easier to understand, but I still can't get it down just because it's so complicated. As far as time signatures, it's in 4/4, but it's a very creative patten that Mario came up with. One of my favorite songs on drums that I still can't get down to this day.

    • @mosselliadelt
      @mosselliadelt 6 років тому +2

      Asif Ahmed time signatures are a way to count beats in the music. So a 4/4 has four note values where each note is equal to a quarter note. So you would count 1,2,3,4 in each bar of music. And each of those notes has a quarter value. (I may be explaining it badly lol)

    22:49 nail on the head this song is about death and dying with grace. At the start of the song it’s a build to realization of the fact that you are dying then the chaotic part that you said is almost to much to handle. Can you imagine the moment you realize you are dying how scared and frantic you become then the heavy groove after the chaos is accepting that death is inevitable better make peace with whoever you need to come to terms with the life you lived. The euphoric part is a representation of shedding that fear of death. Then the ending groove is peace of mind in the heart and soul it’s heavy because the nature of what is happening within you. And the outro is that you are gone there is a peace falling over the once palpable fear, actually crossing over and leaving this realm with grace and dignity yet it’s still sad. This musical piece has captivated me since the first time I heard it when I bought the album in 2012 I often listen to it when I get depressed and at the third transition into the euphoria fills me with courage to face whatever is bothering me at the time. So to me this is the epitome of self-reflection and a tool or guide (as I said in an earlier comment) to find yourself and fill yourself with the courage to face such a scary and momentous thing that we as humans must all face one day. For life and death is the way of all flesh. And the art of dying is exactly that dying with grace and dignity.
    If anyone else feels the same please let me know if you think I’m misinterpreting please feel free to try to enlighten me.
    Ps. Vacuity to me is the greatest self empowering song ever written and you guys should absolutely do a reaction to it after hearing this song I think it will benefit the both of you for the better. Plus it’s a Gojira song of course it’s going to be great they never disappoint. Only band I have ever set on the same pedestal as Tool.

      I think it's more about letting your ego go
      why I believe this?
      Neglected emotions leading to catasthropic voyage on the other side
      I have been given so much stress and lack of confidence
      I have been given the gift of a so small hope deep inside
      I haven't closed my eyes in a long time,
      I am trying
      I cannot stomach these forms and colors anymore
      but I am here to continue after all I've been through
      I try to keep my eyes open
      and I realize that
      this death and life more precious than anything
      I won't bring no material in the afterlife
      take no possession
      I'll rather travel light
      I am of this kind
      that kills all day
      but I don't know yet how die
      Art of dying is the way to let all go
      within I practice in the secret of my soul
      My shape in the reflector
      Has now forever, a life on its own "

    • @jessebarnett8011
      @jessebarnett8011 5 років тому +6

      Myth Talks Honestly not arguing being condescending or smart, obviously you cant help it if you think im coming across like that but please understand im being genuine when i say: Of course its about dropping materialism and killing the ego. It seems to me like in the moment we are faced with death killing our ego is the only way to transcend this plane to the other with grace for ourselves. Holding on to the ego is materialistic in the way that humans used to try to take their wealth into the afterlife just nowadays its mostly our ego we fear to lose. Now with that said this song does nothing for the dead. We are alive and should take these lyrics as a metaphor to how we should live life so we are ready for the let go when the time truely comes.
      So in essence I totally agree with you i just feel the music behind the lyrics is meant to render the emotions they feel one would go through in a personal and very intimate moment in ones life. The music is to make you feel it the lyrics are to make us acknowledge the dissonance between how we live life now and how we did before we created materials to make our lives easier and more entertain-able.
      I like your feedback though if your a Gojira fan we could have many of these convos and i would be super excited to speak with you on the many things Gojira or Tool for that matter scream to me in the music and lyrics

    Stolen from another comment in a different video for this song:
    "The polyrhythm section in this song is brilliant. If I may give a technical explanation (I didn't come up with it, I heard it in an interview of Mario Duplantier, the drummer). It has puzzled many drummers. If you look it up on the internet, the classical notation for the rhythm would give a cycle from 4/4 to 2/4 to 21/16. But this notation is not appropriate as it doesn't tell you what's really going on. It's easier to break it down into a 3-layer polyrhythm. It's played at 140 in sextuplets. The intro gives you the basic pattern: 1234 1234 1234 12 12 12 1234 1234 1234 12 12
    When the song starts, the bell gives the 4/4 pulse on top of which the two other patterns will be overlaid. The trick Mario Duplantier is using is to alternate the right and left foot to start each group of notes : RLRL LRLR RLRL LR RL LR RLRL LRLR RLRL LR RL. Then he fills the blanks with the snare. I didn't do the math, but the ending result is a cycle that resolves each 54 bars or something like that. Crazy if you ask me."

    3 groups of 4, 3 groups of 2, 3 groups of 4, then 2 groups of 2. Makes for a crazy time signature, but he plays it flawlessly over a 4/4 pulse in the intro, and a 4/4 ride pattern after the drop.
    Amazing stuff!

    SO happy you guys looked into this song! One of my favorites, and as a drummer who has tried to play this song. It is incredibly difficult trying to manage the rhythms between all your limbs. The kick drum is playing the same pattern that was being played in the intro. Once the lyrics come in, the playing gets much easier. The drum pattern is two bars, the first is in 6/4, the second is 21/16, and over the top of it you're trying to keep a steady quarter note with your right arm on the cymbal bell. It's a super cool groove, and the whole song overall is super impressive on all the instruments

      Dude, I've been going on for months for "The Gift Of Guilt" and George and Ryan are avoiding it like the plague.

    It's happening😮😊
    Edit: As a drummer the intro is the hardest part to memorize, the rest is really fun. The drummer really drives the heaviness of the chorus, which is great to improvise once you understand the feel.

      Not trying to be arrogant but I actually found the intro to be the easiest part, if you think of groupings it only takes a minute to figure out
