Whoever was responsible for creating the reveal trailer - should never be allowed anywhere near trailers ever again.
They looked at the trailer for Saints Row and said "this is good"
100%. The reveal trailer was so bad that the gameplay reveal video has more than 50% downvotes. I'm sure that's an aftershock from the negativity the reveal trailer created.
Feels like people may need to work on how they react too
It wasn't a trailer for preexisting Dragon Age fans. This is a franchise that hasn't released a mainline title in a decade. There is a whole generation of young adult gamers who were not around for dragon age as an staple name in the gaming industry, a generation who most likely grew up playing Fortnite. That's who the trailer's for, and to be as broadly marketable as possible. Which if we're being honest. That was the right business decision for marketing because Dragon age fans who've already bought into the franchise but are on the fence will make their decision to purchase based off gameplay footage and reviews. That cinematic trailer, though, is gonna be a thing that helps meaningfully grow the fanbase, even if it makes older fans and gamers roll their eyes.
That cinematic trailer was so stinky poo poo, I'm so glad the gameplay trailer was good!
It looks like a masterpiece return to form? really? It looks a lot better than the tone set out in the reveal trailer, but it still didnt give me a tonne of confidence.
I feel like it looks similar to Inquisition. Doesn't look like a masterpiece but good enough for me at least. I defo would've preferred that they returned to the style of Origins.
maybe they intentionally set the bar so looow with the trailer so the garbage gameplay looks acceptable
@@Titi-pu2hl Not a bad theory haha. I wouldny say it looked like garbage, i just dont see how it looked as good as matty is suggesting it does in this video. Im still a long way from sold on it. I just dont see how anything in the gameplay demo could lead you to think "masterpiece return to form"
@@dctrbrass Yeah, and inquisition wasnt that great haha.
Yeah I feel like Matty is coping a bit. Not to say the gameplay was super bad or anything, the game just looked kinda by the numbers with pretty rail-roaded quest design. I can't imagine it'll be as bad as Andromeda--and if it is, BioWare is gonna get shut down--but Mass Effect 2 vibes? Not from that gameplay.

Never realized Dragon Age 2 had such a devote following.
I loved DA2 and I know alot of other people did as well it’s just that the people who hate the game tend to bring it up more often.
It’s an amazing game with some of the best characters and writing in the entire series with a lot of aspects surpassing origins but because it was also very different to origins it just wasn’t as successful.
DA2 was what got me into DA and it remains my favorite because of it's characters!

I'm very worried so far. The charecters in the gameplay look very odd, their faces look very smooth, almost like they're airbrushed. There are a lot of neon colours on the screen, im not entirely sure how i feel about that at the moment. And to top it all off, the combat seems to lack any "oomph" to it. The charecter in the trailer seems to be doing all the flips and moves but the enemies just stand there return hits like nothings happening. The game hasnt dropped yet so im withholding judgement, but based off this, my hopes are not very high :(
Character creation
The character creator is divided into five categories: Lineage, Appearance, Class, Faction and Playstyle, each with a range of subcategories
Appearance
Character appearance seems to be fully customizable, with more options than in past games. There are now body-sliders between body types as well as individual sliders for specific body parts. The character creator also offers different lighting options to reflect what the character will look like in various lighting conditions.
Class
The three standards class, Warrior, Rogue and Mage, return, each with three specializations, seemingly available at character creation.
Faction
You can pick Rook's faction when making your character. There are six factions to choose from.
Grey Wardens: An ancient order sworn to fight darkspawn & monsters. Wardens undergo secret rites that grant them supernatural powers.
Veil Jumpers: Explorers of ancient elven ruins. They welcome anyone brave enough to face Arlathan's reality-warping magic.
Shadow Dragons: A resistance opposing corrupt rulers and slavery in Tevinter. They are determined to bring justice to the people.
Lords of Fortune: Explorers, hunters, and treasure-seekers from Rivain who are famed for their daring exploits and narrow escapes.
Mourn Watch: An elite necromantic order that tends to Nevarra's sprawling Grand Necropolis, where undead walk and spirits dwell.
Antivan Crows: Swift knives in the dark, these ruthless assassins are respected and feared as Antiva's shadowy protectors.
Playstyle
Playstyle lets you tailor the game's difficulty.

If they release the game in a polished state it will do very well imo
For me it isn’t even about the style of combat it’s the tone and art direction that’s the problem. Doesn’t even feel or look like dragon age.

3 abilities to use in combat as a mage would be a literal travesty. Magic went from this intricate cool powerful thing in 1 to a extremely dumbed down shadow of what it use to be. My Grey warden called down ice storms and fire tornados. Simple and streamlined is not better
It does look a bit sick. As in bad. Removal of the tactical map has just lead to a really confusing and huge messy hud for combat choices. Although you can pause the action it just looks really boring and weird compared to a proper overhead view where you could use height to your advantage etc.
I can’t see anyone into Dragon Age Origins warming to this as it is more like A third person ARPG with a pause mechanic.
Digital Foundry did say there are rumours this was built off a cancelled MMO project which is why it resembles one in looks with very generic looking modern graphics with little imaginative flair.
It’s not the same game as Dragon Age Dreadwolf was going to be with a name change.
It makes sense to me that a rogue would flip in and out of combat. As in DnD some of the best abilities a rogue can have are acrobatics, and getting in one big critical hit. Then backing off and resetting into stealth to get that big hit again next round. Also it looked like they were going in and out of using the daggers and switching to a bow and arrow. So flipping back to get a hit in with a bow would be preferable in distance rather than up close.
They were all rogues
Maybe this is a hot take, but that switching between bow and blades was probably the one thing I liked about the gameplay. It reminded me of weapon sets in Dragon Age Origins, but hopefully with more practical application this time. I couldn't tell if those blades were meant to be really long daggers or if they were swords. I personally hope the weapon restrictions from previous games are gone.
I agree with some people saying that this game will be very divisive. But I say....Bring it On!! I liked the gameplay trailer and most of all I liked the vibe and how the story was presented in these 20 minutes. I admit, I would have prefered a different gameplay approach but thats ok. You expect that in a Dragon Age game. They have done it before. And, personaly, I play Dragon Age for the story, world and characters.
Next dragon age will make genshin impact's combat look complex.

God forbid there be “foul language” or viscera/blood of any kind while viciously killing things.
I’m clearly spoiled by other dark fantasy RPGs. In any case, here’s to hoping that BioWare can deliver a feature-complete product.
No amount of blood or gore could undo the lack of dark-fantasy-feeling the cartoony art style is causing for me. I just can't take this game seriously with those plastic looking faces.
There’s a pic posted by Mike Gamble that has uncompressed blood since the gameplay version needed to be cut down
@@trackblaster4627As stated the entire art style is no longer grim or dark.

Gonna have to disagree with you here Matty. There was no bait and switch. The cinematic trailer told us what we were getting in the gameplay trailer.
-Fortnite look with bright colors and lights
-Flat writing with heavy exposition (no show, all tell)
-Quirky character design that will probably fill in for being interesting in their own right
-Fast and flashy
-More happy and upbeat than it probably should be
I don't want to say this game is DOA, it might still sell well. But I am not buying unless it has an Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam or it's $10 for the Ultra Deluxe Edition.
I completely agree. The voice lines weren't delivered in line with the magnitude of the situation... no desperation or fear, it was all upbeat, sarcastic, and ironic. The writing wasn't good. What Solas had to say was pretty basic - and he's supposed to be a complex, compelling villain. I'm so disappointed and I wonder why others don't really seem to care about these writing and stylistic choices, because they really speak to the tone and quality of the game we are likely going to get.
Could not disagree more this looks more like a Pixar movie than a dragon age game
Why did they replace Varric with Thorin Oakenshield?
Fr though, why did his hair change entirely?

@@Rurik7959 I think his hair is meant to reflect his looks on the Trespasser epilogue. He has longer hair and looks older there, closer to what he looks in Veilguard.

It’s been 10 years. He was middle aged in inquisition. Now he’s getting old bro😂

Matty, I've been your subscriber forever and agree with you 95% of the time, but... damn. Bioware's last romanceable, (imo) attractive female for a straight, human male was 12 years ago (M.E. 3). Dude just got his paycheck for this or something 😮 everything is just SO great, no critique at all!!
Obviously. Bro's brown nosing the industry, the game looks like shite.
I was fine with the trailer, but this really makes me wary regarding combat. Real time action oriented combat, three characters in the party, three skills in the skill wheel per character. I watched another stream and one of the comments struck me as being very accurate, and something I find offputting: Combat is very much based around movement.
I loved Dragon Age: Origins. The pace of combat felt just right. Dragon Age: Inquisition's combat was pretty close. I didn't care for Dragon Age 2 combat at all, and this feels closest to Dragon Age 2's combat.
Except, even there, you had access to all your abilities in combat. The combat wheel here has three slots for each of the three characters, and most of the combat sequences seem to be based around basic action combat. It feels more like Mass Effect Andromeda than Dragon Age to me.
The world looks gorgeous and I like the character design, but the combat . . . eh. I'll reserve final judgement until the game releases, but it (the combat) has a very Andromeda feel to me and that is not, for me, a good thing.

@@CalDale-i6z it hasn’t been “dark, heavy and gritty” since the literal first game and even then you’re exaggerating a LOT. It was never that dark. So since the majority of games in the series haven’t been like that over the course of the last 15 years, then YOU are the one who’s looking for it to change its identity to something it isn’t. Because Dragon Age, as a franchise, has not been chasing that image for a long time and barely even had it to begin with.
Also what is with this “buying into” it nonsense? You didn’t make an investment, you bought a game in a franchise. That’s it. You were never guaranteed anything. If you don’t like the new direction and think that it’s worse, then that’s fine, but it never promised not to change into something else. And why would it? Dear god, the dislikes in Mattys videos recently have been crazy.
Wasn’t the writer for Varric one of the people they laid off?
I’m nervous about possibly only having access to three abilities during combat rather than six or eight like in the previous games. I do not want this to play like Mass Effect. Combat is not as fun with less abilities/spells to use. Too many games are doing it lately. Along with Mass Effect, there’s Anthem, Outriders, Hogwarts Legacy, Diablo, Dragon’s Dogma 2, and heck even Skyrim has a limit of only using two spells at a time, and probably many others I haven’t mentioned. I’m not quite understanding the purpose of limiting this and making it like other games rather than having more variety like all three of the previous games. I'm going to be p*ssed if this hive mind type of thinking ruins this game. Asmon doesn't know jack about Dragon Age and despite good news coming in about actual gameplay, he doesn't even want to hear it. Asmon also cherry picked the worst things Cohh had to say, and even then he's mostly torn about how he feels. You must've missed the part where he said he also thinks it might be good for what it is, even if it's nothing like Origins.
@@NickaLah Asmon's takes sometimes are a bit shit and simple minded but even he can smell the shit blowing in the breeze.
One look at the QnA they did and how far the game differs even from inquisition to such an extreme its incomparable even the folks who liked Inquisiton myself included this is a massive let down even by those standards not in considering just how far detached dragon age as a whole has become from its superior source material being DA:O.
The folks comparing this to Mass effect also have it wrong because its not ME:3 Combat its Andromeda Combat by far arguably the worst its been certainly by RPG standards.
Also Cohh is very forgiving, he will play arguably bad games no ones going to sit here and call Elex a good game, did it have "some" redeeming qualitys sure but at its best its a 5/10 the same will be said about DA:V.
He is attached to the story of Dragon Age and wants to see where it goes but don't pretend Cohh isn't disillusioned by the whole thing he's stated after in various comments after the fact how disappointed he is that he would not have even considered touching it if it wasn't Dragon age and the only reason he will be playing it is if the story is good, because he already views the fundamentals of the gameplay as a lost cause.
Him finding personal fulfilment with the story is not an admission of it being good for what it is, its him saying he will enjoy it for what it is and that its simply a "Dragon Age Story" and he will have to fundamentally rewire his thinking to find enjoyment through it.

Your choices obviously have zero impact like u could see before confronting solas, your character makes a hard boundry saying nah we shouldnt waste time talking to him but varric still did it.
Your character itself seems to be some fucking rando named after a dragons dogma pawn.
I wish i saw what matty saw but man this "gameplay" trailer didnt sell me on anything. Guess we will see in 2 years or so because they stilll havnt even commited to a release date because they need more time to actually design anything compelling
No idea what you saw, but i saw a game that was very "broad appeal audience", lost its dark roots, was very neon and fortnite, with a family friendly art styles (Demons look like disney creations), button mashing combat without any tactical debt and dialogue written by a 12 year old... and they CHOSE to show this part...uff...thats gonna be a rough one
Being a fan of ff rebirth and ff16, I’m one hundred percent fine with the action shift… now setting and story… I’ll be waiting on this one.
I personally don’t want another open world like Inquisition. For Dragon Age games I like a bit of forced guidance. I’ll leave bouncing around the map to Bethesda games
I'm really excited about the game! And I gotta say I don't mind a bit of "bloat" and exploration. Just don't give me Starfield level of repetitive "exploration" (I just don't want a short game) 😅
So sick of all these fucking companies trying to make everything a Marvel movie. So tired. And also, developers in general, just randomly slapping neon purple in every fucking game now is not creative.
This from the same guy that played Redfall early and didn't realize that game SUCKED. Paid for industry shill man. You on dreamcastguy level dog.
If you think the games "looks sick" then i cant take you seriously in the gaming space anymore.
The game is visually pleasing only as its iwn stand alone thing, as a dragon age game, it looks ridiculous. Inquisition was a stark contrast from the forst 2 games, and this is EVEN further removed from that. You cant visually change a game so drastically and expect anyone to believe your still in touch with with the games vision. This would matter a lot less of the atory had concluded and we were working with entirely different characters or possibly a different timeline. Imagine if Red Dead 3 trailer debuted and the visual style changed to cell shaded toons. Nobody would take that seriously, nor should they. Thats what this is akin to. Nothing about DA is still DA other than the name and a few hold over characters.
Its sad because its obvious to me that some very talented people worked on this, they just had extremely poor direction and management.
Yeah right. I lit 80 dollars on fire with anthem and the hype was way more intense. BioWare can kiss my ass.
Looks like a disney game.
I remember when playing Inquisition you can go online and click all the things you did in the previous games for the story to continue, are they gonna do that again?
Apparently they're going to have something similar built into the character creator this time
You won't be able to port choices over directly through Dragon Age Keep anymore but you'll get in game tarot cards with context to let you pick some major choices you made
@@SwampRattler08 i see
I really want to continue with my character from the last game. 😔
Yeah Keep is basically defunct now and you'll be able to make your Inquisitor and choose what decisions they made. Only Inquisition though which kinda irritates me ngl. All the effort spent trying to make decisions from Origins and 2 matter feels meaningless to me.
Darn it I am liking the game play so forth. Why are people so easy to attack and hate. I have played all the games and will play this game. I am an older gamer and I'm not discouraged by all the negativity. Thanks for adding positive support to this.
I just start DAO this afternoon. It made me feel better.
Dialogue is awful. Very marvel like. The last conversation, the one where Rook chooses between Neeve and Harding, is a cringe fest. The jargon feels too modern like. Solas is way more stoic and calculating, the way he acted in this reveal is super lame and basically got dealt with because they destroyed a scaffolding. Geez, what a master plan.
did Matty watch a different gameplay video?? They did anything but return to form
I truly admire your optimism Matty, and your ability to remain hopeful. That was a mess.
Damn this could have came straight out of the 40s I love this
Damn, so all it takes is some fortnight MCU gameplay to get you back on board huh?.
I actually nearly completely agree with matty for once. Nice.
Hope we get to see soon the mage gameplay... I want a sword in the hand and in the other an fireball xD
This game looks like an adventure game, RPG itself seems to have few elements, I didn't like the design of the enemies, the combat was what I was thinking of a modified Inquisition, I liked it but it didn't excite me, the strong point of the saga was never combat, I hope the The characters are as good as the previous titles and the choices too.
I mean... I like Final Fantasy...
Not sure if Bioware at this point in time can do the Final Fantasy high fantasy trope better than Square Enix
They gave us the most basic combat that they could find... to their credit it seems to be working.
It looks extremely good, but extremely derivative
seeing the game play looked fine. i think you will be able to control the other party members like in inquisition, because when the person was using the wheel they went over the area the icon for the other character would be in and it highlighted it. so i think it will be there for people that did enjoy that aspect, especially for conversations with npcs, the character that talks to them might be able to sway them in ways that the others couldnt, say they're a specific race or class. I'm fine with not controlling the party members. i usually ended up using the inquisitor more often anyway because it was the game play i liked.
I’m with Matty, I really liked everything I saw from gameplay and story elements and graphics looked nice. I’m very surprised to see so many people not liking what was shown. Day 1 Matty lets go!
mass effect 3, that cut away from Varric going to talk to Solas was so horrible. I really hope that's not in the final game.
