- Ray's Candy Store, an East Village institution, has served late-night munchies since 1974. Owner Ray Alvarez, 86, is well known for his deep-fried Oreos, egg creams, milkshakes, and chili cheese dogs. The store has kept street wanderers and New York University students well fed into the night as they hang around Tompkins Square Park.
Cult-like customers have been raving about the shop for decades, saying it’s an “unchanged gem in a transforming neighborhood,” “an institution that has brought joy for generations,” and that “it was as good as I remember at 6 years old.” The family-run business continues to serve the same food since it opened and has had recent visits from Kim Kardashian West, Kendall Jenner, La La Anthony, and Food God, who documented his time there, saying, "Everybody's talking about this place! EVERYBODY!"

He's not lying. He faithfully stay open even during a blizzard we were having and everything was closed even Odessas and he was there and made us something. My dad always took me afterschool because he use to go when he was a boy when everything was about 5 cents. The classic drinks I grew up on from him are the lime Ricky's and the Vanilla egg cream. Unfortunately Ray was attacked last night because no one was protecting him. You see, everyone was on their computer type "protect him" and thus everyone thought Ray was protected.
I worked at Ray’s part-time during the summer of 2010 when I lived in NYC for an internship. He’s exactly the same, I am stunned and pleased he’s still kickin!
Back when I worked there he wasn’t supposed to have the fryers and they were in the back on the ground covered in news papers 😬 glad he got some ventilation or whatever permits he needed! I also got to serve Matt Dillon an egg cream and help a Polish guy translate who was stabbed in the park.

He managed a store. Didn't own it though, but paid rent. The store was there for YEARS upon YEARS serving people. The land lord decided he wanted more money. He raised the rent to where my family member could not afford to keep up the store any more. He would have had to work 7 days a week plus day and night to make ends meet. He couldn't do it...so he let go of the business sadly. It was a family business. Eventually the store got remodeled and turned into a big chain sports store. No longer a mom & pops joint. It's just the shits when land lords get greedy and want more money. They should recognize how hard the person is working and if the place is successful.

I have a really funny story about Ray, I was hearing rumors that he died, I walk in The store Sad and then, Boom, he’s alive making egg creams. In shock I exclaim! Ray? I thought you were dead! To which he replies “back in business” as if he was dead and came back to life! I have a good chuckle about it every once in a while
If I'm not mistaken, he was kidnapped from the store and left in the back seat of a car. He then proceeded to break the window, crawl out and go straight back to work without even calling the police
