Mr Onomi was her Piano Tuner. He died not long after this performance.
This was circa 2011-2012. Hiromi is truly amazing and unique. I just got to see her live in April with her new project Hiromi's Sonicwonder.
I managed to see her live at the Montreal Jazz Festival with Edmar Castaneda, which was an absolute blast. While it's not on the album (a huge shame) their second encore was a duet version of Place To Be, my all time favorite composition of hers.
A friend of mine is a piano tuner, but now he's starting to get ALS, soon he will not be able to move his hands anymore. :-(
At one concert, after Hiromi's lengthy improvisational final number, Anthony and Simon were swaying, waving their arms and stretching their fingers, but Hiromi relentlessly demanded an encore - and then one more.
"Are they improving all this?" Not everything, but theres a lot of improv going on. Hiromi's writing style is mostly improv. Everyone there is a top tier jazz musician, and its not uncommon for live versions of Hiromi's music to differ a fair bit in length to the album recordings due to extended solos and such.
He is a piano tuner. She trusts him completely. She hires world-class musicians. The drummer is Simon. The bassist is Anthony. Both are ranked within the top 10 in the world. The tuner, Mr. Onoda, is also top-class globally.
To me, Hiromi and Kanami are Japan's treasures.
