The demons seem like nice people
According to a Finnish guy's comment on Joel's stream, the game actually _is_ more of a comedy than a horror game. I guess there's apparently a lot of in-jokes and references that only Finnish people would understand. And the way the demon has bunny ears is supposed to be reminiscent of a popular Finnish comedy character. The stuff the demon mumbles isn't translated in the word boxes but supposedly he's just saying actual silly gibberish, not anything terrifying or creepy.

I watched a playthrough of Sauna 2000 and I think Vinny managed to glitch into a weird state between two different endings: the one he got first where the demon caught him and made the screen all scary and stuff, and another with where it just chills with you in the sauna with no distortion, filters or scary sounds.

@zyellowzebra it looks like that was supposed to happen, but somehow he also got scary filters and sounds. I think it was just supposed to be either the scary ending with the TV shit or you finish the sauna, he shows up and you just chill
@@YvngXero I'm guessing it's because he finished the sauna _after_ the part where the scary ending begins, triggering the chill ending while the scary ending has already begun.

That Finnish voice acting is strangely perfect. It sounds like the accent from a comedy sketch show, and yet combining it with a horror setting just somehow makes the whole atmosphere even more surreal. And it's actually not even bad voice acting. Since when has Finnish voice acting been good?! Though the demon's, or presumably Hiisi's lines made me laugh.

More literally it's said that they will turn it into shit, which means to demolish it in this context but the thought of someone driving a car over an outhouse so many times there isn't any shit left amused me and isn't too far off the meaning.
Next lines that follow are: HOW THE FUCK IS THIS (building) EVEN STANDING UP and BETTER TAKE A SIP (of beer, presumably.)
The last line is quite silent and inaudible but what I hear is: SWEAT THE SHIT OFF, which just means well, the way that sauna makes your dead skin cells come off in the heat and this makes the "monster" that much more humane.
If you're interested: the voice actor is Nikke Kuki, vocalist/guitarist of the band Status Abnormis. Check out his stuff on UA-cam, he's a ridiculously talented multi-instrumentalist and composer.

The Fins seems to be very hospitable people. Even when a demon-like stranger barges into your Sauna in the middle of nowhere, they still chat & chill with you and share some beer.

That last game was the first game to make me genuinely a little bit scared and uncomfortable. The setting and the sounds were too real for me, it was literally like a 1:1 representation of my family's shitty little summer cottage.

Vinny didn't bug the game. that was Sauna 2000 as intended. You have to please the demon by makin the Sauna in time, once you do. He vibes with you.
This is an amazing project, it gives me LSD: Dream Emulator vibes. Great atmosphere and great diversity, super fun to explore.

Edit: I think they left the audio bit rate just way too high as well. You just need more crust on that audio if you're going for the full PS1 experience.

I know a channel that play these kinds of games called Alpha Beta Gamer. He plays almost anything. Some worse than others, but generally really good.
I love ABG! And funnily enough, I commented on one of his videos saying that Vin should play some of these games. Then the next day, this stream happened. So yay!

watching vinny "enjoy a sauna" was one of the most stress inducing things I've ever had to sit through, i felt like i was going to have an anxiety attack.
Dread Delusion makes me think of some weird mixture between Crypt Worlds, Morrowind/Skyrim (particularly with the Dwemer stuff + magic), and Fallout. I love it so much
Got a bit of Warhammer 40K in there too, with the dead god emperor/machine, medieval world meets strange technology and zealous warrior followers.

That Tasty Ramen game has my heartbeat going wild, I feel chest pain from how anxiety inducing it is. It's proof that no matter how dark or spooky you make a game look or sound, what really makes the horror is the psychological aspect of having to run away from something.... *Anything.*

Tasty Ramen is like LSD Dream Emulator and Parappa the Rappa's dumpster baby, and I kinda love it for that alone. It also helps that it looks tense as all hell, and gets additional bonus points for not having the ramen guy go OOGA BOOGA in your face whenever you die. A crunch noise is simple and extremely effective.
Dread Delusion has already made an impression on me with how entrancing it is with its world building. Seeing that airship slowly fly across the sky, those floating skeleton enemies, the Avatar things... honestly the only gripe I have with it from what I've seen is that the ghost girl NPC swears a couple of times. The "shit and steel" line works, I'll admit, but her saying the fuck word later on just seems oddly jarring when you take other things into account. On another note, though, I love how openly-hostile the game-text is with you. Like "you PILFERED 1 coin", "you gained a DELUSION of might". It definitely helps set the mood even further.
Snowy Castle looks as if it was conceived, programmed, and artpassed all within the same day. Nothing wrong with the simplicity of it, and I'm not necessarily saying it was a slapdash job, but it did feel a little bare-bones. The lighter being a compass that led you to any nearby candles was a really good game mechanic, though!
Sauna 2000 is probably the second best in terms of aesthetic (tied with Tasty Ramen), but honestly I think the gameplay and progression of events were pretty below-average after the actual sauna-making part goes off the rails. It feels like once the spooky stuff starts it wants you to KNOW, without a shadow of a doubt. Like it's literally SCREAMING at you to be scared, but it just doesn't work after the initial shock wears off. "OOO, man with horns! OOOO, dead bodies!! OOOOO, the game character's in the real world and there's a shadow-man in the bathtub!" It just comes off way too strong, way too quickly. I vastly prefer the ending where you just kinda sit there in the sauna with the horn-man, but even then it's just constantly screaming at you and making the screen distorted... and after looking at it for a good 5-10 minutes it's just not scary, just annoying.

Well, if you view that last game as a metaphor, you could see it as an old murderer either falling prey to or making peace with his demons... or a weird Finnish trip. It's cool either way. I'm kind of afraid of the full version spoiling it by adding more, to be honest.
That second game though, I'm real keen on it. I'm gonna' keep an eye out for it.

This could be it's own sub-genre like classic 8 Bit and 16 Bit games
But much like those games they incorperate modern things like particle effects not seen in those eras. Would have to get really creative with practical effects to make a modern PS1 game sell well.
It kinda is becoming a genre, maybe not as PS1 games specifically but look at games like Dusk, Ion Fury, and some of the other "boomer shooters" that dont just recreate the gameplay of those older games but also the aesthetic. I wouldn't mind more early 3d era game ripoffs that recreate n64/ps1 style graphics.

Honestly, that second game looks like it could be a full length game and be baller as hell. Just that introductory area looked amazing with that combination of graphic and art style. If that was a full game, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Dread Delusion definitely has some Morrowind influences in it. The Clockwork God is similar to Clockwork King, another title for Sotha Sil, the incurable plague suggests corprus, and the survivor from the crashed airship brings to mind the crashed airship that can be found on Solsheim in the Bloodmoon expansion.
It's execution is also very similar to the Kings Field Games. + The Delivery of the Souls series
