  • What is Power Factor?
    Simply put, Power Factor is a measure of an electrical systems efficiency
    The apparent or total electrical power (Kilo Volt Amperes or kVA) used in an electrical system by an industrial or commercial facility has two components:
    Productive Power (Kilowatts or kW) which produces work.Reactive Power (Kilo Volt Amperes Reactive or kVAR) which generates the magnetic fields required in inductive electrical equipment (AC motors, transformers, inductive furnaces, ovens, etc.)
    Reactive Power (kVAR) produces no productive work. Because the inductive electrical equipment employing magnetic fields requires this Reactive Power, which produces no productive work, the Total Power (kVA) provided by the generating source (your utility) must always be greater than the Productive Power (kW).
    The ratio of Productive Power (kW) to Total Power (kVA) is called the Power Factor (PF = kW / kVA). It is a measure of the systems electrical efficiency in an alternating current circuit and is represented as a % or a decimal.
    The relationship between kVA, kW and kVAR is non-linear and is expressed:
    kVA2 = kW2 + kVAR2
    In almost all industrial facilities where Demand charges apply, utility companies charge a penalty for poor power factor. Poor power factor is most often corrected through the use to Power Factor Correction banks.

    voltage drop in 36vdc adaptor, I am making 36v in ac after DC connected I am getting only 30vdc in copper and 28vdc in aluminum..
    how to clear this to maintain 36vdc

    Sir i have 905 Kva transformer running 24 by 7 i am having induction furnace when i run production power factor is maintained , but when i dont on the furnace my power factor drops . when i dont run the furnace i switch on 17 kvar capacitor every day it drops by 0.04. when i on the furnace i switch on 75 kvar capacitor and 30 kvar apfc pf is maintained . every month on the last day when eb resets pf to 100 within an hour it drops to 40 eventough 17 kvar is on please advise as now there is curfew

    sir, if you add inductive (lagging) and capacitive loads(leading) leading + lagging both will get balanced. so real power and reactive power becomes equal right?. then why different formulae. one has cos teta and the other has sin teta??

    Sir, if inductive load is waste electricity, y we aren't using resisitive load in fans instead of inductive ?

      It is because you cannot. Fan works on electromagnetic induction. Without electromagnetic induction, there is no work done by the motor. Motors are inductive in nature. There is no pure resistive load anywhere. The reactive power is necessary for creating electromagnetic field. The real power is consumed and converted to mechanical power.
