Im afraid I cant link it right now as im not on my laptop, but it was only a few months back now that i did a video on how loud an electric violin is when not plugged it. It will be somewhere on my channel....
Thank you for all your videos. I'm taking up the violin again after more than 15 years absence. You're videos are very educational, informative and inspiring. The first piece of advice I took was to upgrade to a decent violin. Even to my untrained ear the difference was immediately noticeable. Your video on proper bowing techniques was a real revelation. I saw a great improvement in no time and my living room no longer sounds like a torture chamber for cats.
This review was straight-up and to-the-point. "The Final Countdown" was just pure fan-service, and I loved every bit of it! Seriously that violin looks awesome and sounds great, I can't believe it is available at such a low price.
Your electric violin reviews are really interesting, Alison! And the more I watch your electric violin performances on UA-cam, the more I'm tempted to get one... Thanks for your wonderfully informative videos!
I got a stagg violin was impressed with the quality. The problem i faced was tuning it in. I couldn’t get the string to tune properly to the point the string snapped in my face.
Your so awesome! I already have a Guitar, and soon violin teacher, but when she not here I go to you! Thank you so much for your amazing work! Keep it up!
I have a Cecilio electric and a Mendini MV 500 acoustic. The family complaind about the volume of the acoustic even after adding a mute. It is really loud especially without the mute. I puchased the silent electric to practice on, hoping it would be quieter, they can still hear it. I moved to our theater room to practice, now they are happier. I recently bought a I Rig device to use with the electric and a cell phone app that lets u select and talor ur sound and effects, LOVE IT! Fun to experiment with, even though its ment for use with a guitar effects. ( 65 dollars US) Cheap for all the effects u get on the free app that comes with it. Allison is right, learn on an acoustic violin first. The two types have a totally differnt sound. I still love the acoustic the best, but mine is so loud, I have to play it when I'm the only one home.
I got a Blue/Green metallic violin :) and I'm using it on my violin covers. :) Thank you for your informative reviews :) Violinist from Philippines here! :) Mabuhay!
Hi! I have a big problem with this violin. Can you please help me? The bridge falls off from my violin very often. I don't know what should I do. I cant play, because after a few seconds it is out from violin.
I've found I don't like Guarneri chinrests. Is it easy to replace the one that comes with this? Apparently some electrics are too low in height to easily replace with a standard chinrest and bracket.
hello Alison! I live in the US and have been playing acoustic violin for 7 years. 'really interested in purchasing an electric violin but had a few questions. 1) what is it like to play with a pedal distorter and what sort of features does a pedal add to the electric violin? also is it hard switching from acoustic to electric (technique wise and becoming familiar with the pedal, amp, cable cords, etc)? thank you so much for your help!!
1. The elec violin is the same as playing an acoustic, just that the body feels and looks a little different. If you buy a cheap e.violin, the body will be very heavy and cumbersome and not enjoyable to play. My Ted Brewer for example is very light and a pleasure to play, but it comes at a cost at about $1,800 (approx) it is my career so its worth it for me. 2. the Boss pedals add whatever you like to the violin as they come in many varieties such as Blues Driver, Distortion etc etc I couldnt put that into words as you have to go to a shop and try them. i have 3 now that i use in combination as my 'signature' sound that no-one can replicate as i keep it a secret (lol) but i went to a shop and hooked my violin up to at least 12 pedals until i was happy.
Where do you find the sound in back since 2:00 ? Or where do you download it and how do you do play in the same time ? what software do you use ? Thx ^^
Rose Its seems its just for the red one - the link must have changed from Amazon, their end. It seems also that Stagg is probably the same as the Rockets, just with different branding. I would assume that they are both the same as I cant imagine one will be better than the other....
Hi Alison, I'm looking to purchase an electric violin, as I am moving out and violin practicing is not allowed there. A friend recommended me the Yamaha SV250 but unfortunately is out of my current budget. I saw you recommended Cecilio but I could not find it in Amazon UK. I saw good reviews about Stagg brand, Do you recommend any model in particular apart of this one? For an intermediate level..... Many thanks, bw excellent playing in this video, I love it ♡♡♡
I’m not really sure what I can recommend for an intermediate player, as they won’t be cheap. The cheap ones are bulky and heavy and produce a very high end and runny sound. That’s fine if you don’t mind that, but if you prefer something better, then you will need to pay more. I can only suggest you try some and see what you like playing ok more. Or go for the Stagg one - but as I said, that will be bulky and heavy and you might not enjoy playing on it.
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor He also recommended me Wmutes but not sure if the sound coming from the violin will be mute enough or similar from the ultra practice mute. How difficult is this.... Thanks anyway Alison.
how does this compare to the Cecilio CEVN ? not taking price into account or the audio output jack. you are verrry helpfull to me BTW new subscriber for sure
I have never played violin before but wanted to learn as an adult, I have an autistic 3 yr old so I was looking at the electric just because you can use headphones, do you recommend this one over the cecillio silent violin, or would you recommend the kinglos electric violin?
Question for Alison: For violin vibrato, where exactly do you put your thumb? Some people say it should be touching the side of the finger board, others say it should be slightly underneath. I find it hard to vibrate with my left thumb touching the side of the finger board, so I usually bring my finger a little lower so it's a little bit under the finger board..is that wrong? I keep hearing different places to put my left thumb and I really don't know who to listen to now? Help please :(
If i were you, i would find just one vibrato video and stick to it. If you choose mine, your thumb placement is important, BUT you must roll your finger as this is the source of all vibrato. Perhaps you are having problems because you are looking at too many videos and although they all have the same ending, they are all going about it differently and hence the confusion. Have your thumb where ever is most comfortable so that you can roll your finger. **This is my opinion folks and not meant to offend anyone and is my own teaching style. Everyone teaches differently**
Can you please suggest a violin for me I am a person that is interested in learning how to play I've never played the violin I don't know how to read sheet music or how to read violin sheet music please can you help point me in the right direction thank you so much
Hello, I am thinking purchasing the Cecilio electric--do you think a person needs an amp if they are playing in a small chapel (wedding or funeral) or intimate crowd of 30-50 people--what can I expect to pay for an amp---can I set up everything myself as a female by myself, and just be ready to go
When i play at weddings I play my acoustic violin unaccompanied as i feel its more appropriate than blasting people with the sound of an electric violin. My personal opinion on the matter. No matter where you play, you will need an amp with an electric violin otherwise no-one will hear it. You can use headphones, but then only you will hear so thats for private practice. You should be fine with a 50w amp. How much they are, I really dont know as i dont know where you live, or what you can afford etc. Just do a Google search.
I am looking for an elec. violin at this price range. I like the sound of it but could you tell me if is heavy or not? I am looking for a very light one.
CrimJims Hi, you can probably get a lighter one but maybe not for the price of these. Just received the one that I bought and it's slightly heavier than my stentor acoustic violin. The fine tuner on the G string is not working so will probably have to put a new tailpiece on. Will be putting some better strings on anyway. I paid just £73 for the red one, so I'd say it's a very good buy for the price.
Are there any reasons why you wouldn't advise a complete beginner to start learning on something like this? I just bought my first violin yesterday but now I'm thinking that I should've got one of these electrics because of the amount of sound this violin makes. I've got a mute for it but it's still quite loud. Are these electrics completely silent?
I would always advise learning on an acoustic to at least get the basics first before an electric. They are heavier and ever so slightly different, so learning on one of these first can make it harder to go back to an acoustic - 'MY OPINION' of course.
Dizy Lily I dont know its about 250 years old. Ebony is black wood, so that will only be for the pegs, tail piece and fingerboard - if its not plastic of course.
Just bought this violin but it seems like it doesn't produce decent sound while trying to play it. Keep in mind this is the first time I ever tried to play violin. Any suggestions? I tried to make the strings more tense and the bow same result. When you play it in the video it makes a good violin sound.
+Windy Guy Without seeing or hearing you, im not sure I can help as it could be any number of things - what amp you are using? Are you using the amp correctly with the correct cables, have you enough rosin on the bow, are you playing correctly etc etc. Sorry i cant help more, but this is one of those cases where I cant really help over the internet.
Hi, I actually found out the problem. It was the bow there wasn't any rosin on it. So done that and it works just fine. Now time to follow your lessons. Thank you for your quick reply.
Hi, I am thinking of getting one of these and i am a complete beginner. If i did buy one, should i change anything like the strings or bridge to make it sound better? Or would you recommend i buy something a bit more expensive instead? The reason i ask is that other reviews of this item have mentioned that the bridge and strings are poor quality. Thanks
its up to you.....possibly by the time you do all that, you may as well have bought a better one. You can replace the strings if you wish having said all that and that will make it easier to play as the strings are adequate and do not 'need' to be changed unless you wish to do so. If you saved your money on strings and added that to the cost of a better one, you wouldnt get the price difference back in quality if you see what i mean? all comes down to budget at the end of the day and what you need it for.
Greetings Allison, Are electric violins more quitter than acoustic violins ? would you also use the ultra practice mute on the violin to make it even quieter or would there be no need ?
I have to say something stupid but 120 pounds is a small fortune in Serbia. I know this violin worth every penny but I am broke. There is this type of violin on serbian market but it costs around 180 euros. I have a question for u, can i plug this violin to a home stereo because i dont have money to buy MARSHAL amplifier. SORRY for the stupid questions...
I dont think you can plug it or anything like it into a home stereo player as a home stereo player will not have a suitable output for an instrument. You can just plug the headphones with comes with into the violin and only you will be able to hear then. You dont actually need an amplifier for an electric violin - you only need one if you want to play for others to listen.
The Online Piano and Violin Tutor Well I'm almost 100% sure you could use the headphone output and plug it in to the let's say tuner input of a stereo amplifier ( or whatever input it has... tape, dvd, cd... I wouldn't use phono - it has a preamp for phono cartridge).
Hi can you play the last of the mohicans(the kiss) I really like that music but I don't know how to read sheet music so can you help me with that..... :)
Have you done a review for any of the Cecilio silent violins yet? And....would you happen to be able to post tabs for any of Lindsey Stirling's music besides the obvious Crystalized?
not yet, but hopefully some are winging their way to me as I type :) I have not transcribed any of LS's music. Tab is almost impossible i find to do on music with no words as unless the tune is completely familiar, just putting D3 A2 etc etc means nothing and if my version of the melody differs, then again it will mean nothing to you. Im sure she probably has sheet music available to buy from her website though?
I recently bought this violin. Is it normal that my violin produces the same volume with or without using the headphones? I thought using headphones should make the violin silent during practice? Or am I wrong?
Thank you for your response! I just noticed that I don't have the same violin, but it looks very similar to the one in the video though! (I bought a Stagg EVN 4/4) I put the battery in, but there's no button to switch it on (once the battery is in, the violin should work, I guess). The headset works great, but the only problem is that the violin still produces the same amount of sound to bystanders. Does the violin in the video produce sound once the headset is plugged in?
I dont know - is there a volume slide/button? You might have to ask the people where you got it from. Sounds like its something your end though rather than a fault with the violin. The only other way to test is the violin is faulty, is the plug it into and amp. If there is nothing coming out of the amp, then the violin is most likely faulty.
@Stien You have no way to stop those strings vibrating, that is the sound bystanders hear. A headphone can help you hear it louder, but others will still hear you playing, however not on a same level like you played an acoustic one. You may try a Violin Mute, but I am unsure of the results of electric violin + mute combo.
I dont know alot about electrical violins but You can try use a pedal called acoustic its designed to make electric guitars sounds like acoustic guitars
Hi Allison ! I really enjoy your videos , thank you so much for your effort. I play the Violin since I am 5 years old but i had a few breaks where I didnt play for years , but whatever. I decided to get an electric Violin mainly to play in my church. Can you recommend me a cheap electric violin like cicilio , stagg , rocket which one would you choose ? Thank you in advance and much love from Germany :)
I'm 14 i have been taking violin lessons for 4 months turns out I'm pretty talented, I have had over 3 yrs of learning experience in 4 months...do u think I'm ready for an electric violin? Oh and can you make a video on how to play the Devil went down to Georgia? That'd be great can't find the sheet music anywhere
Its adequate and befitting for the violin itself. If you are an advanced player, it wont be suitable, but then neither will the violin. If you are a beginner or so, then its fine.
That's definitely a stagg violin :)) at least, they were the first to release that type of violin on the market! It really is a great instrument, I got one when i started. It's sound better on a PS system, obviously if you know how to set it. :D
+Jessica Watts If i may jump in....I wouldnt recommend either for you at grade 7! You will instantly be disappointed in how unresponsive it will be for you. I NOT saying this is a bad elec violin in anyway, but its not for you being an advanced player. May I recommend the Yamaha SV130 or something like that? Honestly, dont be drawn to this because of the price - it is a good price, but with electric violins, you get less quality than an acoustic counterpart at the same price. It would be a step down for you and you would find it incredibly frustrating trying to play your grade 7 pieces for example on it. Even if you dont plan to play those pieces on it, because of your level you WILL get annoyed at it. I would say you need to spend just a little more money to get something you are happy with. I personally have a top of the line, best money can buy Bridge Dragon electric violin and even though its beautiful etc etc, its just still not quite as good as my little old acoustic violin.... Sorry for the long message....
+Jessica Watts it seems to be the same violin just with a different name on it. I had to file down the bridge and change the strings on my stagg and buy a BOSS ME 80 effects
Oh, yes your right. Thank you for your response. Do you know if they also produce it in white? Because my electric violine must be a white one with this S-shape! :) No matter if it's the one by Rocket or by Stagg. Do you've ever played/reviewed the one by Stagg before, too? I'm very interested on its playability, building quality, and sound, too. ...also I wanna say thank you for your awesome content. Yesterday I watched approximately 30 of your videos. You are doing a great work for the musicians on youtube.
I honestly don know - you would need to go online to a place that sells either. I know it comes in black and red, but white - i dont know. I would say that the Stagg and Rocket are pretty much the same, if not the same. Sometimes manufacturers make a violin, then companies come in and have that violin made, but with their branding on or a few other little tweaks here and there, but essentially they are the same.
Than I would say that I'm gonna give the white one by Stagg a try, and also take your advices from your video "Pimp Out Your Cheap Violin!!" to increase it's quality. I guess that way it will be fine for my start on a electric violin. Thank you very much
Something tells me it looks a lot like the cheap Stagg violin. Looks can be sometimes deceiving with violins like this and I don't trust that violin by the looks of it. So, what's the main difference between the Rocket and the Stagg if they're similar in looks and electronics?
Hello Alison, thank you for your perfomance, you are beautifull girl and much good and I would listen to you and you will see for times.... You greet Robert
I can't get sold on present day electric violins, I can see the point of a hard rock player or shred metal player using them but i'll stick with the LR Baggs or the Fender system at least I can get some aged wood warmth out of the sound, thank you for your Demonstration of the Violin plus all the other Videos you do on Violins and your expert knowledge you provide viewers
Alison, I really enjoy your videos, I have learned so much from you Thanks. Would you ever consider doing violin lessons on Skype??. I am here in Texas U.S.A.
How loud is this when it's not plugged in? My main concern is that i'm crap, and i don't want anybody to hear me practice.

its up to you.....possibly by the time you do all that, you may as well have bought a better one.
Greetings Allison,
Are electric violins more quitter than acoustic violins ? would you also use the ultra practice mute on the violin to make it even quieter or would there be no need ?
PianoJamMan no need to use any mute with an e.violin as they are quieter generally.
I'm a beginner and I want a violin which on do you sudgest
hello my dear, I want to lean to play the violin would this be a great buy for a beginner?
Totally as its light, looks good, comes in black and green/blue also and is a VERY good price.
Hello, ive just brought an electric violin like this and i want to ask you what strings should i use: Dominant or Pirastro tonica.Thx
D'Addario Helicores are the best, hands down to use on electric violins. I have them on all of mine.
Hi , thanks for the review.... I have a question are you able to plug headphones directly into the violin ???
I honestly dont remember as I made this video many years ago, You would be best to look on their website.
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor thank you .
As with the classic violins , would you advise changing strings on the electric also.. ?
Yes you can do. Not always necessary, but....I personally do...
Hi! Alison i was wondering can you make an electric violin sound like a normal violin?
no, you need to buy an acoustic violin for that.
Got It! thanks
Can you review the Bluetooth Yamahas thr 10 amp
If they send me one to review, then I will.
The Online Piano & Violin Tutor ok 👍
Have you done a review for any of the Cecilio silent violins yet? And....would you happen to be able to post tabs for any of Lindsey Stirling's music besides the obvious Crystalized?
not yet, but hopefully some are winging their way to me as I type :)
I have not transcribed any of LS's music. Tab is almost impossible i find to do on music with no words as unless the tune is completely familiar, just putting D3 A2 etc etc means nothing and if my version of the melody differs, then again it will mean nothing to you.
Im sure she probably has sheet music available to buy from her website though?
Alison,I have "stagg" that looks exactly like this one. Same maker different brand name
I have one, white, it's perfect!
Hi Allison,
How would you best tune this type violin if you are a beginner?
+CookingHelene Tune this like you would any other violin.
the craaaazy part looked like a whole vibe. I'd like to play violin and have this much fun one day. I gotta practice first!
I recently bought this violin. Is it normal that my violin produces the same volume with or without using the headphones? I thought using headphones should make the violin silent during practice? Or am I wrong?
Have you put the battery in? Have you switched it on?
You may try a Violin Mute, but I am unsure of the results of electric violin + mute combo.
may i know the name of the song u first played when u connected the distortion......?
+Kartik Chatervadi That is "The Final Countdown" by the band Europe.
Whats the diferent between a cheap violin and really good violin ????
well a more expensive violin will sound, look, feel and play better.
loved it
Hello Alison!
I'm from India. I'm a basic trinity grade 3 student.
Can I use this for my trinity classical exams? &
Can I get it in India?
I dont know alot about electrical violins but
You can try use a pedal called acoustic its designed to make electric guitars sounds like acoustic guitars
They are all pretty much the same electric violin, just different brands.
Does it can hold a shoulder rest?
yes
Thank you
what were the two pieces you played? (: thanks for the review by the way!
The first piece i wrote myself called Meadow Ayre and you can buy here: goo.gl/Npu2wZ
the second is The Final Countdown
What cable did you use to plug it into the amp?
A 1/4" jack instrument cable i believe - thats what most elec violins take but i would check first before you buy.
The Online Piano and Violin Tutor Thanks 🙂
How about the bow that comes with it? is it good?
Its adequate and befitting for the violin itself. If you are an advanced player, it wont be suitable, but then neither will the violin. If you are a beginner or so, then its fine.
Thank you. I might consider getting this than the Cecilio CEVN since the CEVN's bow is not that good.
Is it available in the US?
+Guadalupe Bueno I dont know - im in the UK so Im not sure whats available. You can get similar though.
That's definitely a stagg violin :)) at least, they were the first to release that type of violin on the market! It really is a great instrument, I got one when i started. It's sound better on a PS system, obviously if you know how to set it. :D
what is the name of the song that you where playing ?
The song im playing was made up on the spot.
I love her
Thanks
you are amazing!
what is the weight of this violin
+Bernie Shearn I dont have it anymore, perhaps a google ssearch can tell you? Sorry
+The Online Piano and Violin Tutor . Thx for reply, if it is the same as my stagg its 880 grams compared to my acoustic 490 grams
+Bernie Shearn would you recommend this or the stagg? I'm grade 7 violinist but looking for an affordable electric to play around on
+Jessica Watts If i may jump in....I wouldnt recommend either for you at grade 7!
I had to file down the bridge and change the strings on my stagg and buy a BOSS ME 80 effects
which is best electric violin??
I have a few reviews on my channel
She didn't play the intro music that she usually plays before the beginning of her video
You have a inner rocker in you. You were shredding like a beast!
what Tha price ?
The link should be under the video. I made this several years ago now so I can’t remember and the price changes.
YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!!
How did you remove the stagg logo on the electric violin? Thank you, thumb up
I think you must be confusing this video with someone elses? Im reviewing the Rocket EVN electric violin in this video, not the Stagg electric violin.
Thank you very much
I have the blue viola version, I named mine Sebastian
You are a rockstar
Something tells me it looks a lot like the cheap Stagg violin. Looks can be sometimes deceiving with violins like this and I don't trust that violin by the looks of it.
So, what's the main difference between the Rocket and the Stagg if they're similar in looks and electronics?
Quang Tran i personally have no idea as i have not played the stagg electric violin. Sorry.
+The Online Piano and Violin Tutor I believe they are the same.
Hello Alison, thank you for your perfomance, you are beautifull girl and much good and I would listen to you and you will see for times.... You greet Robert
the violin is also called a Stagg......I actually own one and it is pure white
I can't get sold on present day electric violins, I can see the point of a hard rock player or shred metal player using them but i'll stick with the LR Baggs or the Fender system at least I can get some aged wood warmth out of the sound, thank you for your Demonstration of the Violin plus all the other Videos you do on Violins and your expert knowledge you provide viewers
Alison,
I really enjoy your videos, I have learned so much from you Thanks.
Would you ever consider doing violin lessons on Skype??. I am here in Texas U.S.A.
4.09- yes.
