Heavens, i payed $1,300 for my Yamaha sv-200 electric violin! I like your price better. I never use headphones and always try to run my violin through a pedal. Great video. I will subscribe.
I've been thinking of going electric with violin, but noticed that most vlog proponents advocate the use of an electric far more expensive than what your playjng, say $1,000 USD or more and can't even play at a level your playing on a much less costly instrument. Coming from a guitar background I'm guessing that your better at setting up the instrument than these folks are since adjusting the action has everything to do with getting the most out of the instrument. Thanks for your experience with the newer designs of violin. Much appreciated for your time and trouble.
toolizawesome If you've never played a Violin then start with an acoustic, that's the real thing. Then once you learn the real thing you can play with electrics
Thanks for the heads up. I found this on eBay for cheaper than it was listed when this video came out as a result of a price cut. I'll also make sure to get the Red Label strings when I do go for it, hopefully soon.
The Cecilio is a nice, inexpensive option for an electric (both of mine were $120 each from KKMusic on Ebay). They don't come playable, however, and must be set up by a luthier. I spent $110 and $150 for that. New strings are a MUST. An effects pedal like the B1Xon is a shockingly good pedal for $70. Then there is the amp; my Behringer was $180. Then all the little stuff. It adds up but with nifty results. Meredith has a wireless mic that looks very convenient and I may try. The upshot: the Cecilios are great for the price, and expect associated costs. :-)
Get an MXR Reverb pedal or something and check out the X-Vibe U2 wireless guitar system and than you can get an adapter from 1/4 to 1/8 (3.5 mm) so ypu don't have to worry about a cable. Roland Cube is a good Amp for busking.
ordered an identical one as my first violin, can't wait for it to arrive :) been playing guitar for 10 years, so i wonder how hard it will be to play the violin.
Sure, it's now 2023, and I've watched so many bloody videos it's not funny luv. I do really appreciate your video far more than you might realize. I have figured that I'd go for Cecilio just because they seem to be the most used by schools and new players in general. But that's mostly for Acoustic. Do you think the off brands that are obviously using the same gear are just as relevant? Do the Cecilios also need strings replaced right off? It's time for Black Friday stuff, and I'm thinking I might just go dirt cheap, and if it's no good, then just get a better one later anyway.
Thanks for the video. I haven't played since elementary school, just looking for good reviews on cheap starters. Most other videos were a bit to pessimistic for me.
Reny Violinist Thanks!! I'm actually working really hard on a new medley, the music is almost done being recorded and we've started filming! Keep checking your subscriptions and I'm hoping to have it up next month :)
I just bought one! Liking it. Had quite a time setting it up, getting the strings tuned. Haven't played in 7 years, only took 8 months of training 7 years ago. One string came out, had to fix that, refused to ask hubby for help so proud to say I did it myself. I immediately noticed the difference in sound from what I practiced on 7 years ago, a non-electric beautiful quality rental and bow, they were. Is it the bow? Is it the strings? From what you say it sounds like (no pun intended) it may be the strings. Also, how much did your bow cost you? I'm not sure the one that came with is a good one.
They do but it's very quiet compared to an acoustic. An unplugged electric violin was perfect for me in college when I was living in the dorms for this reason.
@@MeredithLynnViolin thank you very much for replying very helpful thanks again and great content haven’t had a chance to watch a lot yet but love what I have seen thanks again
Not that I've bought, but I'm actually looking to get one this year! I only took cello lessons for a few years in high school, so I was looking at a Cecilio Cello on Amazon. I believe it's $400 or $450 plus another $100 for string replacement.
Great question! If I were in your shoes, I'd check to a few things: 1) Test the electronics by plugging it in if you're able to test in person. This takes a 9V battery, so maybe bring one just incase the owner's battery is dead. 2) Take a look at the bridge to make sure it's not warped (it should be straight up). Mine is almost 10 years old and is still good. If it is warped no problem, just know that replacing it costs money so you can haggle for a lower price. 3) If you haven't already, take a look around at the current pricing for new and used models at this time so you don't overpay. 4) As I always recommend, new strings new strings new strings. Unless of course it's stated they were just changed to a brand that you like. Good luck!
@@MeredithLynnViolin Thanks so much for the reply. I am leaning towards going with a new one ... same model. The deal just isn't good enough. What strings do you recommend? I am a beginner violinist but experienced musician. I hope to play this in my rock band.
@@brianrisk3783 Glad to help! I like either Red Label (~$20) and Helicore (~$35). I've been buying these since I was a poor college student and since I'm not picky I've never looked at higher end brands lol. @@MeredithLynnViolin Well, it sounds excellent as you played it six years ago! I'm an adult learner. I have an acoustic. Looking to buy an electric violin to practice in near silence. That's how I found your channel. Do you say in this video that the cheap electric violins are okay to buy off Ebay? The cheap Chinese ones?
@@stevenjohnson2799 Happy to hear you are learning! I can't speak for other brands but if you see a Cecilio go for it. Again, changing the strings and using a different bow will make a huge difference on this cheap violin but it's great for learners who don't want to drop a ton of money on a silent violin. Also, do not be alarmed if the bridge is not intact as they fall off during shipping sometimes.
@@MeredithLynnViolin Excellent! Thank you Meredith. Do you shape the bridge on an electric violin just like you do on an acoustic? Sorry for all these questions.
I had one, but found the structure of the body too weak, whenever I let my left hand really dwell on the fingerboard with any force, it pulled the instrument out of tune!!! This was a deal-breaker for me as it always sounds like I was playing out of tune, but it was just the weight of my arm pulling down on the fingerboard :/. I like the NS Wav instruments and the Wood Violins instruments, but, they are quite a bit more expensive - though the construction is much much much better.
Thanks for the review! I actually got a knock off version from another Chinese reseller - my violin with matching accesories cost $53 and it has the same hardware. Sounds decent, I got mine so that I won't annoy my roomies while I'm learning.
Hello. Thank you for this review. ¿ What is the brand or type of the black shoulder rest that you use and where can we get one of this ? I mean one which fits with this violin, I do not know if they are universal. Thank you very much and congratulations.
when it arrives it typically comes with a shoulder rest to fit the violin, but if the supplied rest isnt what you need, for the full size violins a shoulder rest with the size range of 3/4-4/4 should be good! the one that came with mine was for a 3/4 violin.just note that electric violins are often thinner than acoustics and take that into account when you are purchasing a chin rest
Skarin Blackraven I got it when I saw her in 2013 but you can also purchase that poster on her website here: www.shopbenchmark.com/lindseystirling/posters/lindsey-stirling-legend-of-lindsey-poster.html
Thanks for the review! I'd like to learn playing violin, but I live in a small apartment with neighbours behind the walls. How loud is an electric violin without any amplifier? Also, can a practise mute be used with it? I'd really love to play, but I don't want to annoy my neighbours.
its about the same as an electric guitar that hasnt been amplified.... I tried mine with a mute but it didn't make a difference, which might be because the mute absorbs the vibrations that would have gone into the soundpost, which is not present in an electric violin. I think that it is quiet enough to not bother neighbours, because i play mine in my room and my family often doesn't even know i'm practicing! I got the Kinglos 3V violin (full size) Its a little pricier than the cecilio featured in this video, but it comes in many gorgeous designs. The customer service is also great and when it arrived at my house (it shipped from china) the bridge was only slightly leaning (this doesn't matter anyway because it has a stand/brace to prevent the bridge from sliding, so replacing it was really easy). the delivery was within the estimated time and as i said before, the designs are gorgeous and colourful, and cheaper options are available if you are on a budget
Hello quick question. Does it also work without the battery or electricity. I am wanting to play it at the beach where there is no electricity or plug.
+Learn&teach2Learn You can play it without plugging it in but it'll be very quiet. If you're looking to perform at the beach buy some sort of portable speaker. I personally use this one which takes AA batteries that I can wear around my waist and can plug right into my violin: audio2000s.com/products/pa_system/awp6202.htm
By the way thanks for the recommendation on the digitech pedal. I bought a used Digitech RP255 and made some really good settings for both playing and recording.
I don't know if you know pedals but we guitar players are freaking obsessed with them. Check out MXR Reverb (in person its so good) and a Univibe (or chinese knock off like the "Shaky Jimi"). The Joyo brand (chinese knock offs) pedals are really cheap. and check out the X-Vibe U2 wireless guitar system and than you can get an adapter from 1/4 to 1/8 (3.5 mm) so ypu don't have to worry about a cable. Roland Cube is a good Amp for busking.
Get an MXR Reverb fot that, that reverb sound awesome, there is a huge difference between it and other reverbs Ive had. check out the X-Vibe U2 wireless guitar system and than you can get an adapter from 1/4 to 1/8 (3.5 mm) so ypu don't have to worry about a cable. Roland Cube is a good Amp for busking.
10 years...it's a very long time, so it will be hard to re-arrange your posture, but do pay attention to your right arm, the elbow is too low, it must be in line with your wrist when playing on D and G. The wrist must be more movable, but don't stick it out too much on the way up. I hope I don't sound rude. Good luck and keep the hard work up :)
No you're not rude, thank you for the advice! This video was posted a couple years ago and I've gotten a new teacher since then so my posture has gotten better, though you've made me realize my right arm still sags sometimes on the lower strings, so thank you!
the strings i got were the thomastik infeld prelude strings, which are great! of course a permambuco bow would be amazing, but a carbon fibre one works fine too. I found the bow to be just fine, although it was somewhat ugly and not incredibly well made. since bows are pricey, even the carbon fibre ones, getting a new rosin could help a lot for a lower price. I have the pirastro gold rosin which is amazing and retails for around $15
The one in this video is an Everest. I really like them because the sides fold in for easier storage. Kun is also a good company, but it depends on what feels good to you.
There are other shape models of Cecilio,,, this one is nice but I like more the other one that's slightly slimmer (I don't know how to say it haha but yeah) so do you think they sound the same ? Yours sounds great :)
the violin's body doesn't have any acoustics, so any sound is coming solely from the strings and bridge. choose whichever one you like most, because it makes playing much more fun!
you can get those types of things from any music store, or from amazon or any type of online store. thomastik strings are good and will improve the sound considerably. the dominant make are expensive ($25 per string) but the prelude make are $25 for a whole set and are good for beginners
Look up 'guitar effects pedal' on amazon. Get an MXR Reverb pedal or something and check out the X-Vibe U2 wireless guitar system and than you can get an adapter from 1/4 to 1/8 (3.5 mm) so ypu don't have to worry about a cable. Roland Cube is a good Amp for busking. Joyo and Amoon are cheap knock offs that are decent for the price
+Heather Butler I have a Digitech RP150 but it's discontinued since its old (you might be able to find it on ebay though) Amazon has the DigiTech RP55 for $48.96. It'll be a decent starter if you want to stay cheap, they jump up to $100-200 after that.
Haha For electric guitar players effects pedals are oir addiction. Joyo is cheapest and you can buy a power bank to plug them all into amd then plug that into the wall. Just look up guitar effects on you tube and come down our rabbit hole. Get an MXR Reverb pedal or something and check out the X-Vibe U2 wireless guitar system and than you can get an adapter from 1/4 to 1/8 (3.5 mm) so ypu don't have to worry about a cable. Roland Cube is a good Amp for busking. This is why guitarist are always broke. Keep in mind there is a big difference in sound quality, a cheap reverb wont sound as good as one that runs about $100 but one at that higher price range will sound so good you'll melt.
Ha!! Playing Lindsey STirling in the background!!! I absolutely adore Lindsey Stirling!! She inspired me to learn violin! I am getting a Mendini violin by Cecilio next month! Any tips for a first timer?
My very first time with a violin. I am a pianist I have played piano for about three years, now it seems kind of boring, I have been listening to Lindsey for about a year now and I have really taken a liking to the violin. I don't know if the transition will be easy from piano to violin, but with dedication and a lot of effort, I am sure it will be a smooth transition!
Tim Hugine Since you play the piano you would have some theory behind the music for sure, but if you could find a teacher or friend who plays to help you with your positioning of the left and right hand that is a must. You don't want to learn it the wrong way.
Your review and demo was great! Thanks. My blue electric cecilio is on the way. I'm looking forward to practicing with zero self consciousness in my apartment (headphones)
Thanks! Glad to help! And you honestly don't even need headphones. it's loud enough that you can hear it but quiet enough that people in the next room can't. I love it!
This violin isn’t really top quality but it’s amazing for someone like me who is going on 4 years of playing who is working out if they want to perform! And ye the rosin and bow aren’t the best, and I just use my own but I still need to restring mine two years later... :] I don’t use it but to practice really but hopefully it might see a stage one day!
***** Check out Taylor Dayne. Shes not bad either. I got my Cecilio electric violin from Fiddlerman.com. He has a carbon fiber bow that is fantastic. 60 grams weight, beautiful lapping and frog. It's nearly indestructible and it goes for $68. I bought two of them. I liked the video. Good luck!
pfretman I just bought the CVEN style 1 (pearl white) not even 30 minutes ago from Filddlerman. Really looking forward to receiving it. I may buy the carbon fiber bow at some point soon, but I have quite a nice wood bow for now. I did order Helicore strings with the Cecilio....I've heard they sound great with this violin.***** Nice review. I agree on the fx board. I have a number of pedals, a looper, pre amp etc. for my guitars that I can't wait to try out on this.
Mic would be an input so I dont know why its on there. You would plug into the line out I would get an MXR Reverb pedal or something and check out the X-Vibe U2 wireless guitar system and than you can get an adapter from 1/4 to 1/8 (3.5 mm) so ypu don't have to worry about a cable. Roland Cube is a good Amp for busking.
I went back toy Amazon order, it's a: Cecilio 4/4CEVN-2BK Solid Wood Electric/Silent Violin with Ebony Fittings in Style 2 - Full Size - Black Metallic
It depends on what you want out of it. Acoustic will always sound better (assuming you can drop at least $800 on a good acoustic...) but since many people watching this review are first timers, I recommend a cheap electric so that if you don't stick with it, you only spent $100. You can always upgrade if you stick with it.
Hmm. I know it's a recording through a dumpy mic, but that sounded pretty awful. Eh whatever, I've only been playing for a year and I'm just looking for a decent silent electric violin to play quietly rather than sticking a bunch of muting crap on my acoustic one. Hopefully some Dominant strings will make it sound a little less horrible.
bulldog521521 Again recording with the camera mic isn't always the best. If you want better electronics I recently upgraded to a Yamaha sv130 ($740 new) and it's better. I'll make a video for it once I've had it for awhile but the Cecilio was perfect for starting out and not having to spend a ton of money.
I don't like having to use mutes either plus one of my teachers said it isn't good for ear and tonal learning which is crucial. Really glad these can use headphones.
This isn't a real review because you don't use the strings that came with it and you also don't don't use the bow which is important. The resin isn't as important to use what they gave you so that's ok. But it would be nice to hear a REAL review.
This video is gold!

Get an MXR Reverb fot that, that reverb sound awesome, there is a huge difference between it and other reverbs Ive had.

can you teach me how to play cause i have the same violin!
you said you bought it off eBay? do you remember if it was from kkmusicstore or a different sell?
you can buy them from amazon
10 years...it's a very long time, so it will be hard to re-arrange your posture, but do pay attention to your right arm, the elbow is too low, it must be in line with your wrist when playing on D and G. The wrist must be more movable, but don't stick it out too much on the way up. I hope I don't sound rude. Good luck and keep the hard work up :)
No you're not rude, thank you for the advice! This video was posted a couple years ago and I've gotten a new teacher since then so my posture has gotten better, though you've made me realize my right arm still sags sometimes on the lower strings, so thank you!
SInce you said that the bow and the string are not that good, what alternate bow and string replacement do you recommend for this guitar?
the strings i got were the thomastik infeld prelude strings, which are great! of course a permambuco bow would be amazing, but a carbon fibre one works fine too. I found the bow to be just fine, although it was somewhat ugly and not incredibly well made. since bows are pricey, even the carbon fibre ones, getting a new rosin could help a lot for a lower price. I have the pirastro gold rosin which is amazing and retails for around $15
I've seen those shoulder rests before and they look pretty nice. Does anyone know what kind they are? I want to say Everest but I'm not sure.
The one in this video is an Everest. I really like them because the sides fold in for easier storage. Kun is also a good company, but it depends on what feels good to you.
Okay thank you! I have a Kun on my violin now and was just curious about Everest.
@@MeredithLynnViolin I use KUN and recommend the foldable one. They last years for me.
bagus sekali ! matur suksma
I...LOVE
LINDSEY STIRLING
Hi I'm thing about getting on and I was wounded ing what kinda strings did u get and how we're do u get the affect petal 😃
you can get those types of things from any music store, or from amazon or any type of online store. thomastik strings are good and will improve the sound considerably. the dominant make are expensive ($25 per string) but the prelude make are $25 for a whole set and are good for beginners
I LOVE YOUR T-SHIRT
What kind of effects pedal do you use? I've got the same instrument and I'm looking for something to start with!
+Heather Butler I have a Digitech RP150 but it's discontinued since its old (you might be able to find it on ebay though) Amazon has the DigiTech RP55 for $48.96. It'll be a decent starter if you want to stay cheap, they jump up to $100-200 after that.
Haha
For electric guitar players effects pedals are oir addiction.
+Tim Hugine Is this your first time with an electric or first time with any violin?
My very first time with a violin. I am a pianist I have played piano for about three years, now it seems kind of boring, I have been listening to Lindsey for about a year now and I have really taken a liking to the violin. I don't know if the transition will be easy from piano to violin, but with dedication and a lot of effort, I am sure it will be a smooth transition!
Tim Hugine Since you play the piano you would have some theory behind the music for sure, but if you could find a teacher or friend who plays to help you with your positioning of the left and right hand that is a must. You don't want to learn it the wrong way.
Ok. Thank you! I actually know someone who plays the violin. I will be sure to ask them about teaching me sometime!
I love it!
Informative.. Thanks...
What song is playing in the background ?
Can't remember the name but it's by Lindsey Stirling. She's on UA-cam.
I like your shirt!!! Twenty one pilots!!!
OmniHeIix
Replacing strings with Helicore was the first thing that I did.
Do you plug into 'line out' or 'mic?'
Mic would be an input so I dont know why its on there. You would plug into the line out
I would get an MXR Reverb pedal or something and check out the X-Vibe U2 wireless guitar system and than you can get an adapter from 1/4 to 1/8 (3.5 mm) so ypu don't have to worry about a cable. Roland Cube is a good Amp for busking.
Thank you ....model no.. plz tell me with brand name
I went back toy Amazon order, it's a:
Cecilio 4/4CEVN-2BK Solid Wood Electric/Silent Violin with Ebony Fittings in Style 2 - Full Size - Black Metallic
@@MeredithLynnViolin thank you verry much...which is better acoustic violin and electric violin.
It depends on what you want out of it. Acoustic will always sound better (assuming you can drop at least $800 on a good acoustic...) but since many people watching this review are first timers, I recommend a cheap electric so that if you don't stick with it, you only spent $100. You can always upgrade if you stick with it.
What song was you playing ?
™ #Jona Beyond the Veil by Lindsey Stirling
***** thank you
5:58: Sound of my pain)
Instead of spending extra money on effects pedals, wouldn't it be smarter to save that money and just get a better violin? 🤔
5:57 bow hit the wall😂
Cute
All instruments sound better through a pedal, at least reverb. Again, great video.
Yyaaaaasss lindsey stirlinggg
Master of Tides lol
Actually Beyond the Veil, but they're pretty similar
Are you a goth
$130 wow u got lucky
КРСИВА
she is a dancer not a violin player
This isn't a real review because you don't use the strings that came with it and you also don't don't use the bow which is important. The resin isn't as important to use what they gave you so that's ok. But it would be nice to hear a REAL review.
