Virus Indigo Arps

- I picked up the Virus Indio a few years ago for the sum of $600! In Australia when this synth was released it sold for around $4,000. I used to dream of owning one in a time where my studio consisted of Roland and E-MU Romplers, Juno 106, SH101 and a AKAI S1000. For a very short time I managed to own a Access Virus B, the same synth but not looking 1/2 as cool!
It surprises me how synths that were once the unaffordable envy of most people drop in price to become very affordable. At least for a time. Its not that they sound less awesome than they did, maybe we all get so hung up on NOW and whats just been released that we miss the gems that are available for a fraction of the price they once cost. You can still get Access Synths very cheap compared to original list price. Even the first of the TI's is now within reach of most people... lets not talk about its USB Latency is all :D
This video inspired me on a several years search for an Indigo. I just got it. STOKED!
Nice one! Hope you really enjoy it. Its amazingly deep and a little menu divey to get the most from it. My fave thing is play one of the ARP patterns. Push the res to max and play with the cut-off.. You get amazing beats and textures that way :D
interesting how a human influences the synth. I have Virus B too, but my sounds are very different from yours, even in the same categories, pads, arps..... thank you for showing this side ob Virus.
Thanks Anton. I hope my own personal taste in sound and sound design shows in my video's :D
100 Things I Do yes, and your taste is great!
Once that bass hits
*DAMN*
Indeed, considering this is Digital from the 90's it still synth gold :D
Wow that's insane! Amazing downtempo capabilities! The Virus was always on of my very favorite synths dating back to the Virus B.
Yep, best time to pick them up at the moment... most people are looking the other way :D
From this video I like the tone of the Indigo vs the other Access synths.
Yep, the Indigo and Access B (Same synth boards) do sound great :D
Your control of that Synth is awesome ! wowowwowowowowoowow
The Virus is still king in many ways :D
Amazing track. Pure electronica - very impressive.
Thanks Blume UK, I really appreciate it :D
Holy shit, 600 bucks was a bargain! I once saw a Virus b or c in cashies on chapel street for 200 bucks. I came back and it was 2000. someone had obviously worded them up
Very nice! As usual, you make some great sounds with every synth you have. Really enjoy the 'hold' mod you have (i.e., credit card slammed in between keys). I'm going to need to use that function on my SY77, which has looping envelopes (but stops looping as soon as you release the keys).
Thanks , great trick to keep things happening (without using tape) :D
@@100ThingsIDo Does Sweatwater sell those hold cards - could not find them.
@@bobcatt2294 I guess they are no longer the cool item since the 70's and 80's! I should make some to sell haha :D
The bass reminds me of John Carpenter's The Thing. :) Love it!
Thanks :D The Early Virus still has the goods today!
I wish i could justify buying one! Too bad Access doesn't make a VST version
Please post some more videos of this superb machine!
Will do :D
@@100ThingsIDo The balance between too little and too much is very fine. This is just right. Keep it up. The infinite notices this and this IS a good thing. Keep it up. Fricking Awesome!!!!
I enjoy your youtube page - great work with all your videos.
Thanks Midera :D
Now THAT is good music
Thanks Simon, my releases of late have been very abstract, time to make some more melodic music again I think :D
beautiful 🍀
Thanks for listening :D
Fantastic sound and theme... 🤩
Thank you, such a great synth even being digital and over 20 years old :D
i have the Virus KB, and i must say that having a hardware synth makes editing more fun.
The dedicated control surface and that its not possibly going to stop working next time I update my DAW is paramount! :D You can pick up these older VA Synths for Peanuts these days! :D
Prices on Ebay or Reverb range from $700 and up for the Virus A, B, and C Desktop Version. The TI versions cost a bit more
I found I did not like the TI as much. A lot of that workflow is based around the USB port on the device. The latency on the port is horrible! No matter what I did when I owned one it just lagged like crazy! For some reason I just always ended up spending ages surfing presets and not composing music :D
Beautiful sounds, but it's the credit card hack that really got me :)
:D Glad you enjoyed it!
Filter sounds smooth & the osc sound good and not too thin! Like it!
The Virus was the king of what at the time was called 'Virtual Analog'. You can still get some very serious tones from it :D The programming is very deep (a little bit of menu diving required .. but not to a crazy extent) :D
Yes, I'm aware of the virtual analog. I have a Waldorf Q, which has wavetables that the virus did not have, well, until later editions. I made one of the Q demo's called Q-Werk. www.waldorfmusic.com/en/hardware-archive/q-series/q-series-downloads/category/243-Audio%20Demos
All sounds except the mellotron choir and drums came from the Q.
Always a shame that the Virus can't scan the wave table like PPG/Waldorf, it can only play the waves as oscillator waves.
Great track! I love a track that pushes my hifi, this had deep bass and super highs, all mixed beautifully into a track that I would enjoy listening to for much longer than 4:28 :)
Thanks , I was just playing it again .. yes .. maybe it should go a lot longer :D
I've owned 5 Virus' (Virii?). Probably my favourite synth of all time, bar none. Great demo!
Hey BM. Yep they are magical for inspiration for sure! The TI really drove e mad with the latency of the USB... I always felt I had something set up wrong but everyone was complaining that it was SLOWWWWWWWW. I think the B revision is my fave (which the Indigo pretty much is), Never tried the TI2 .. i expected it to be more of the same... Did like the C also! :D
This is sick 😏
Thanks Marcus :D
Very nice, i love my Virus Indigo :)
So great! Only wish the Pot's would last just a little better before wobble :D
Emotion. #1.
Thanks :D
❤❤❤
Apparently there's no "hold" or "latch" function in arpeggios or chords? This would make a good trance synth thouhg
You can do it on Arp's .. not sure about Chords! :D
great Demo Thx Sir !
Thanks, and thanks for checking out the clip :D
Exquisite
Thanks Prabir :D
We need the patch !!
I wish I still had it ... had to change the battery a few years back and reset :D
Om Shanti Om 🎶👍
Not bad for a VA from the early 2000's when a lot fo people used to whine about how poor VA's were :D
I thought I liked the synclavier but that one sounded superb in my headphones !
Thanks Aleziss... The Virus still by todays standards makes some very nice sonics :D
@@100ThingsIDo I clicked on that video of yours just because it had "virus" in the title, I don't know much about any synths besides I used to play with samplers with one of my friends around 25 years ago where we had a Emu EmaxII and a Ensoniq EPS16+. But with these, we did not create sounds, we were playing back samples from banks that we could midly modify...
That Virus synth is creating all of those atmospheres (I think, I hope it is not samples) or am I wrong ? Like I said, I don't know much about synths besides the two samplers we used to play with and I never got back to music since 20+ years... still interested (this is why I'm here) but don't think I will ever be back at it...
Again, that Virus sounded beautifully, creates nice atmosphere in my headphone, easy to get lost in time... like your brain stop thinking about everyday problems when I listed to that track again right now...
@@Aleziss Thanks for the very kind comments. Exactly what I hope my music can do , take you to worlds of sound and texture and drive relaxation and meditation. Yes almost 100% The synth. It sounds like a used a little bit of external Reverb (maybe lexicon) but all the sounds are generated in real time on the Virus and not samples. The EmaxII was a very nice sampler. I still have an original EPS :D
@@100ThingsIDo You're welcome ! I've been looking around on your channel but I still come back to this one. I'll have to find out where you have the EPS on your videos ! Back then, we used diskette drives, it took awhile to load sound banks and samples. The EmaxII had a HDD inside but we had a bunch floppy discs to load anyway on that big sampler that we got from the music store, Steve's Music in Montreal ! We also ran all of this on a Atari with CuBase ! We did our drums with a Roland TD7 and a yamaha multi effect processor. All through a small analog mixer board and we recorded to cassette tapes !
It's nice to see all that vintage stuff on your site, how nice it sounded back then and how it can still create beautiful sound scape and mood. Now everything is on computer with a midi controller... I think it sounds different than with the real thing ! Thanks for sharing all of this !
Good deal, I sniped my indigo 2 for 2k aud on ebay when it was the current model, sadly spent most of its life in storage now its not so well, hopefully new battery fixes it.
Hopefully a new battery should improve things. The Virus goes pretty crazy when the battery becomes low and it does a lot of very unexpected things :D
@@100ThingsIDo Year later still not got it sorted. It fired up after battery change but audio was not clean, one synth repair shop in melb had it for a few months couldn't fix it, so it went back in the wardrobe :( just dropped it off at another place today, guy was very confident he can repair it, so here I am admiring yours again, wish I could just find one for $600 would be a lot less stress!
@@avrilcadabra Hopefully its just the filtering on the outputs at fault. A great synth and well worth keeping going. Maybe keep an eye out for a used Virus B desktop. :D
that's cool!
Thanks Cris :D
0:30 ajajaja very good demo man! thank you!
Insering target rom jajaj
Thanks :D
Any chance of the patch info ?
Stunning track !!!👍👍👍👏
its a few patches, a basic arp on a filtered saw, pad - PWM Square notes with detune if I remember correctly and a saw played as a quarter note arp with a very slow LFO opening and closing the filter. hope that helps :D
@@100ThingsIDo - Is that in a multi patch then ?
Thanks in advance
All the sounds are from the Indigo? I've saw that there are a lot of outputs, are you able to output more than one track from it? I'm really interested in buying one, but after seeing your video and reading a bit of the manual I still can't know if that's possible! Thanks man! Btw, you're killing that synth, such nice harmonies and arps!
El sonído del universo.
Gracias por el comentario :D
Fiquei esperando o Kick e bass hahahaha
:D Not this time LOL
is this live playing? Which patch is it? Thanks!
How is that a single patch!? I thought it was a multi…the light seems to suggest single patch
Multi track recording if I remember correctly but yeh you could do this with a multi :D
I also own one Indigo. In my Opinion this one is the only one with the great organic sounds! The newer one are not sounds so good anymore.
Very true, I never bonded with the TI series. The USB audio had so much latency.. at least in my setup at the time! :D
Yeah bro I got one for $700 last year. Killer build, heavy, nice sounds, but I hate the majority of presets. Do you program all this or is it factory?
With all of my synths I normally create my own sounds. I'm pretty sure I did all the sounds in this clip... but its been a long time so possibly there is a highly modified preset or 2 :D
Is that punchy lower end coming from this synth???
It is indeed. Everything in this clip is Virus Indigo :D
@@100ThingsIDo wow thats pretty awesome. Sounds very nice. Is that all native or is some of that loaded in? Not sure if this synth even has the option to load in offboard audio but ya, ver y interested in this! I was looking at the digiton keys otherwise. Different but they both fill particular needs in my set up!
Which preset (or presets) is this based upon? I’ve never seen an arp so complex omg!! XD, of course it also requires some subtle touch and control on your (human) side haha... great sound!
I can't say for sure. I really don't like presets, normally I use them as a base then move as far away as I can from how it sounded while trying to keep what I liked about the sound at the start. Then, I never save them (or hardly ever). There are some excpections to this. The Arp's are all stock, the double tracking and playing and removing extra keys while the Arp cycles helps break up the monotony :D Hope this helps!
could you make a top 5 of the best synths you have tryed ? would be curious about ..:)
I'm thinking of doing a Series called "Synths I have owned" where I review every synth I have owned and sold or kept.. keep your eyes open .. should be coming in the next few weeks :D Right at the moment my top 5 go to synths in the studio presently are DSI Pro 2 , Waldorf Blofeld, Mood Model D, VCS3 and Korg Wavestation
100 Things I Do oh good choices!! No nordlead in the top 5 ??!!
Nice! I stumbled upon an Indigo a couple of years ago, got it cheap for like $330. My most precious piece in the studio. Use it immensely! Also a good controller for some other things with not so many knobs, like a Mopho and a Blofeld :)
Hi Thomas! Yep its a great box. I remember when it first came out and it was $4000. Crazy money back in the early 000's but it was like having a modular with the amount of diversity of modulation routings :D
Yeah, crazy indeed! They kind of set the path of what to expect from a "modern" synthesizer. Built like a tank as well but I've installed a new LCD in mine though, the original was very faded.
Yes I still need to install a new LCD In mine! One of those jobs I just keep putting off :D and a few new pot's would not go astray to reduce the wobbles :D
Nice work dude! Could you share the patches?
I would love to but I did not save them ! Sorry about that!
100 Things I Do it's OK buddy keep the awesome work mate! Subscribed!
Is this all in one take, or did you overdub each arp individually?
Overdubs, the Virus B engine does a lot of note stealing if you must it in its multi-timbral mode! :D
lol, no hold key function huh... $2000 synth..
There is a HOLD In the arp section but no filter hold. :D
Hello. Is it possible to share the presets used in this demo song? please tell me
Sorry, If I had them I would but they were all done in real time for this clip!
ehy hello! but this synth is the version one or two? thanks
Version 1 :D
In my ears indigo kills the ti but ok thats just me i guess. Always the virus ti for me had a very thin sound for my liking while this is more deeper sounding
I used to own a TI, it sounded pretty similar but the USB implementation was frustrating! :D
@@100ThingsIDo so it dont really worth the upgrade? I dont use daw anw:p
But nowadays you can get the same sound from a cheap plugin. No wonder their prices has fallen.
you can't touch a plugin and not feel it
but you make music with it, and that's what matters.
David
Do you think someone who ones a stradivari will use a plugin instead ?
check the channel of real musicians who actually compose for movies and tv shows and see if they care
Some people are happy with Plug-in's. Personally I use a lot of them but i'm always terrified of my work flow vanshing in a puff of IT Upgrade or worse. The company is sold / goes out of business and no more on line authorisation :D!
