I love the fact that crested geckos can live off of their powdered diet just fine without the addition of insects! This is the biggest reason why I want one and plan on getting one someday.

@@WickensWickedReptiles Shouldn't they also get occasional insects?
I mean I think it partly depends on the individual. I think some geckos will do fine on smoothie but some will be much happier having insects.
I mean the insects are super simple too. Just pick up a small bag of crickets and throw them in their enclosure. Instant enrichment.

@@Upper_echelon_exotics it is best to also give them insects, but will survive without.
What make this handy is not always having a colony on hand and if the colony dies for whatever reason or you end up between jobs your geckos will survive.
I also like to keep frozen fruit. One time last winter I was stranded for a week and could not make it to town for powder. The fruit saved the day, my geckos loved banana mashed with blueberries.

@@synthesizer8026 You could also get some reptile vitamins and calcium to add to the fruits. That way you know your geckos are getting vitamins they need. Big containers are pretty cheap and last a pretty long time. That way if you find yourself stuck without their smoothie mix you can mix up your own. I use it for my snakes and frogs too and it lasts forever.

Honestly a lot of the reasons people don't like them are the reasons I'm interested in getting one. I've never had a reptile pet before so something that's needs are a bit more straightforward is definitely probably the best option, the only major downside is the fragility you mentioned but I've owned much more fragile animals before (like mice) so its certainly not something that fully discourages me.

Here's a hack I discovered: for reptiles that do best at room tempature such as cresties, they still benifit from having a heat source for thermoregulation. The solution is using depleted UVB bulbs. Since they don't provide enough UVB for reptiles that require them, but still have a very mild amount, and a mild amount of heat, they're great for lighting and heating crestie enclosures and anything else that does well at room tempature.

What do you do if the room tempreture is way higher than the necessary 75degree? 75degree= 23C. So like, what if its outside 30-35C and thus, room tempreture gets also around +30C? How do you cool the enclosure down in that case so that they geckos don't overheat?

    • @samanson2001
      @samanson2001 6 місяців тому

@photographychannel3875 I know you asked this a year ago however I thought I'd chip in as it seems no one provided an answer. We don't have any aircon but during heatwaves we sprayed cold water into his enclosure more frequently to cool the temperature in there and kept an eye on his thermometer. We also occasionally had a fan pointing at his enclosure to give a bit of a wind chill affect and our crestie is still going strong several years later. This has been during heatwaves where the temperature in our house has exceeded 35C.

My gecko must be the most pickiest crestie who ever lived. He will only will eat one flavor of Pangea and sometimes crickets if he feels like it. I’ve tried every flavor until I got the one he liked. Hey Adam, how have you been? I hope all has been well with you! I am totally on your side with this video. I own three different types of Geckos. I have my leopard geckos. I have my crusted geckos. And I have a Chahoua gecko.🦎 and they all have their pros and cons. Just like anything. But I have been sitting here watching you and Yoshi with my crestie Azrael. And we just been chilling, watching the video my very first gecko I got as a baby and have had the joy of watching him grow, I also love the way they feel. They are so cool to pet! And as well, they are easy to care for and come in so many different beautiful morphs❣️🫶🏻☀️ much love to you ❤ and blessed be.

I absolutely LOVE cresties!!! 🥰 I love everything about them. They are literally the PERFECT lizards for me because I HATE crickets! I don't like insects or worms. I love that they are perfectly fine with the powder and fruits.

Slander! Blasphemy! All geckos are perfect!
On the note of fragility, my friend's baby gecko decided after 2 hours of acting as a hair accessory, he was gonna yeet himself onto the floor and under a closet. I was freaking out, but he was completely fine. I guess geckos designed for jumping ought to be at least a little fall-proof...
Also when you said 1994 was 28 years ago, I felt super old, even though I was born after 1994 😂

He knew he didn't want to be there lol

I had a crestie several years ago that was a jumpy one. It jumped out of my hand while I was transferring it to another enclosure and ran into blankets on a couch. While looking for it, I picked up the blanket and it fell (or leaped) out onto the floor and got stepped on! Unfortunately, the damage was fatal and it died 2 days after the incident.
I preserved it in alcohol for a while and then decided to make a taxidermy attempt. Since it's body was well-preserved, I simply allowed it to dry out and I then painted it to show it's original colour and patterns and I ordered realistic glass eyes from a taxidermy supplier. It turned out to be a fantastic artwork.

I’ve found that she also hates Pangea and things and refuses to eat it but she loves meal worms, so it is definitely fun to watch her stalk and attack the worms! I’ve definitely enjoyed having a crestie. She’s my first gecko and I’ve been wanting to have a gecko for 4 years so super super awesome!!

It was difficult to choose either crested geckos or gargoyle geckos to be my new pets. Crested geckos can easily drop their tails and they can't regenerate them. That was the biggest reason that I chose gargoyle geckos rather than crested geckos.

I have two crested geckos! I have an adult that I adopted from an old coworker (he came to me at 2 years old) and he is the absolute sweetest bean! I would not have known how much of a reptile/lizard person I am until I got him! And my other crested gecko is a juvenile (3-4 months?) and is not used to handling. I love them both dearly! Gizmo, the juvenile, will eat mealworms for me and it’s so cute! Nubby, my adult, will ONLY eat the powder! But he loves to run around and explore, he loves to just hang out on my shoulder… I do wish they did more, interaction-wise, but honestly, I love just how easy their care is! I am confident that, for my first reptiles, I am taking care of them well! And they are oh-so loved (even if Gizmo hates me still)!

I have a little crestie myself, Eko. Every time I see him I smile, he's almost always curled up, or stretched out, or just in a generally odd but cute position, and he snaps at the (Dead and calcium dusted) crickets as if they are about to disappear at a moments notice. Whenever I'm gone he goes dark brown, and whenever I come back after being away for a while, he comes to where he's visible and goes to a much lighter shade. Yes, he's slow, Yes, he runs away a lot, but he's also adorable, and loves climbing on people.
If you want a somewhat playful reptile that's easy to take care of, a crestie is probably your best bet.

I was surprised being housed w fire bellies that noine made a grab for a tail but everyone had pretty specific zones. The water element helped that. I had mine like 10 years ago i didnt relize that was kinda the start to the trend lol. I feel bad our info then was baby food there was only one powder on the market. I was able to get powder but they LOVED mango baby food so they always had access to it. Sorry that was longer than i intended. I think maybe the firebellies made the feedings interesting. But i could watch little Rasputin eat all day. ♡
