      Howdy Michael- I keep my age a secret lol. If you’re in pretty good shape I would encourage you to go for it. For inspiration from us “older “ guys you might want to watch Live Free or Die Trying UA-cam channel. Michael lives in Sweden and is building his cabin from watching our videos. I sure wish you the very best with your build and if there’s anything I can do to help just let me know. Take care and God’s blessings to you

      @@michaeldow2955 The log cabin I’m finishing up has the four sided logs. It makes it a bit easier in some respects. It’s easier to do the splices and the notches are the same all the way up. I just like the look of the live edge logs. That’s the way the old timers built and I try to stay with tradition. Blessings

I felt the tension rising when you put that last log, with the splice, in place , and of course it fitted perfectly. At the same time, when it was in, that feeling of relief and joy, when it all comes together, was that feeling I had when i put my ridge beam in place - wohoo - it's such a great feeling. 🍀

    I love your log joining. I have always seen what I call a lap joint with a vertical 1" peg. They all sag, I like your log to log joint, excellent strong joint. I am making slow progress but got a neighbor who has an awesome quad runner has volunteered to get the logs to the landing. I'm using an old lawn mower deck and set the tail of the log strapped in where the motor was removed to help move the cant easier through the woods and keeps the cant out of the dirt. I am anxiously waiting to see the second floor beams go in. Awesome job the three of you are doing Paul, excellent job and teaching! God Bless you fellows!

      Howdy Phyllis- I have used a wood mallet before but it’s just easier for me to use a sledgehammer. I always use a wooden mallet when I’m using my timber framing chisels that have wooden handles. Have you used logs with a live edge on top and bottom surface? I plan on cutting my Tulip Poplar logs six inches thick and hewing the outside face to give a natural look. Using 16 to 20 in logs.

    • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  5 місяців тому +1

      Howdy James- yes, that is my preferred way of log building. You can go back and watch the Paradise Point videos and the earlier Dovetail Log Cabin videos and I explain how to do that with the figuring out of the notch dimensions and how to cut them. The logs for this cabin were already on the job site when we got there. Since there was so much log work to do we used a log peeling disc on a grinder to hew the outside surface. I have always used a broad axe for doing that on every cabin except for this one. We would have been spending days hewing with a broad axe. Thank you so much for your nice comment. I sure wish you the very best with your cabin build. I wish we had poplar trees here. God bless
