How to Measure Your Weight in Space

  • Your weight is not the same as your mass. Mass is the amount of stuff in your body while weight is the force exerted by gravity on your body. Which is why weighting stuff needs gravity. Something not readily available in space. So in order to measure your mass in zero gravity, you need to manipulate Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion and use a workaround. Specifically you need to apply a known force to an object and measure it’s acceleration. This method is utilized by NASA’s SLAMMD (Space Linear Acceleration Mass Measurement Device) device which is used by NASA to measure the mass of astronauts in space. This video describes how you can measure an object’s weight in zero gravity.
