The element that stood out for me was the fur on the yeti creature. The first shots were animated without the fur popping around because of the hand manipulation of the stop-motion artist. That really made me scratch my head about how they achieved that. To see what I am talking about, just look at the original King Kong, the fur was moving all over the place and not because of the puppet movement.
@@humbertoemerson5700 It was a personal project for David Allen, the director and main stop-motion animator. It was his call to make. I don't think it would have had the same feel in CGI.

I'll have to watch the rest of this movie. I love those old Ray Harryhausen movies, and it's really nice seeing something modern pay such a loving tribute to Harryhausen like this.
There were a lot more stop motion sequences plotted out by legendary animator David Allen. Probably due to time and budget (this pet project has taken literally decades to work on), not all of Allen's "Primevals" was completed. It's kind of disappointing that only 11 minutes of stop motion animation wound up in the movie considering Allen and others worked on it off and on for so long.
1 minute of stop motion footage is equaled to 5 seconds of footage… even if it’s a monster just raising his arm. 11 minutes of footage is honestly fantastic for this type of movie.
Its so perfect. Its not just the stopmotion. The lighting, the camera work, the camera type and quality, its all like you would find in a movie from the late 70s and into the 80s.
I'm bowled over. I keep a close eye on everything stop motion and I had NO idea this came out. Thanks so much for posting! The creatures and set ups are magnificent!
I really enjoyed this movie. Grew up with Ray Harryhausen's work (Sindbad and the Eye of the Tiger still my favorite fantasy movie) and I loved Primevals for this work. Thank you for sharing
Wow the day I get to see what modern world stop motion animation is like is a sight to behold and it has truly been refined with this movie, I wish more modern movies have a mix of different methods like this alongside makeup/costume and animatronic puppetry instead of flat out just CGI for everything
Les scènes sont vraiment impressionnantes. Enfin, le chef d'oeuvre de David Allen sort enfin au grand jour afin qu'on reconnaisse le talent de cet homme qui était le successeur spirituel de Ray Harryhausen.
A pain staking labour of love, it looks great, I love seeing it in HD, but also respect the short cuts made to wear a motion capture suit and animate those scenes in 11 minutes compared to 11 months!
This is better than the old stop motion in several ways 1. increased framerates for better fluidity 2. higher definition cameras 3. using actors for reference. The old Harryhausen stuff looked very janky and unnatural because the animators would simply move single limbs instead of actions connecting a long chain of body parts, ignoring other nuances like breathing and body language.
I wanna see a movie with updated, modern dinosaur designs but using the good old Harryhausen-esque stop motion. The feathers might complicate things but if this ape's fur looks convincing without the "twitchy" effect the 1933 King Kong's fur had then there's potential!
I know, it really sucked how they just killed it off. I hate the trend in these stop motion films where the friendly creature is killed off in a brutal way. The one that traumatized me was the death of Trog in Sinbad and The Eye Of The Tiger of how the Smilodon (Zenobia) killed Trog. Then we have the way the Griffin was killed when the main human villain slashed its leg and allowed the Centaur to strangle the female creature to death. And now, we have the most agonizing death which was the Yeti and how it was speared and stabbed to death by the reptilian humanoids. Even more agonizing than the death of Trog and Griffin. I wish that the Yeti had survived, especially since the WHOLE PURPOSE of the humans entering the area was to find and bring back a LIVE YETI for research yet the Yeti was killed off after it helped them.
This movie proves stop motion is actually timeless, this look way better than I expect it to be If we can bring back stop motion, how about we bring suitmation back too
Great Stop Motion animation sequences. I want to see this film, and I can imagine this film in Black and white ornwith some 50 or 60 filter on the image.
Even tho' I enjoyed all animation genres in both movies and shows equally (*2D,3D, and Stop Motion)? It's pretty cool that they used stop motion in this, plus that giant ape in this also kinda reminds me of the 1933 King Kong movie that I watched clips of alot (*dispite that 2005 was sorta my first introduction to King Kong as a whole lol.) which is awesome imo😃
Pleasantly surprised at how smoorh a lot of the stop motion animation appears most of the time. Some of it still is a tiny bit jittery in a few shots, but almost all is super smooth.

No offense to Charles Band, but I think David Allen deserved to work on better films than the usual stuff he did for Full Moon Productions. He was easily one of the best stop motion animators ever and even though I love B movies, a lot of films he worked on were really bad. Granted, he did work on quite a few big budget Hollywood films as well.
The fact that stop motion animation still exists today, Ray Harryhausen would be so proud!!!
