Making a Hippo Tooth Ring | Part 2 - Engraving the Ivory

  • When I finished making the hippo tooth ring I knew that I wanted to engrave the ivory, but I struggled to figure out how I wanted to engrave something that was truly unique. I spent some time with my team researching stories about Hippos and then we decided we wanted to engrave a story from ancient egyption mythology. I realized that something this cool needed to be hand engraved rather than using the laser engraver, so I spent a lot of time practicing because I was only going to get one shot at engraving this Ivory Ring.

i'm seeing so many mixed reviews. personally i preferred the look of it before you did the engraving, but then again i think i would feel that way no matter how well it was done, i enjoy a cleaner look personally. the important thing is that you like it, and you are getting practice. i'm glad it worked out, and don't worry if ones are giving you a hard time.

awhhh this was great!!! My favorite ring you’ve made actually! Who cares that it’s not 150% perfect it’s just so genuine and it seems like you had a blast making this! That ring engraver is sick too!

Love your work 9/10 times but this one doesnt scream out the same consistency in quality as your usual rings do due to the inexperience with the engraving, of course practice makes perfect so keep it up.

Lot of comments about perfection, sometimes perfection feels soul-less.
Naturality is what the artist is looking for on this design and it makes the piece live and unique

Very beautiful work, love the detail and you never know till you try. I do have one question. The mandrel or collet you are using. With the finger adjustment in the back. Where can somebody order one. It is because of you I got into ring making. Love the videos and the Facebook page. You set the bar for ring making. Thank you for taking the time to share and inspire others.

Just watched it for a second time to try get a better perspective. Your usual great work is somewhat cheapened by the engraving. You should’ve left it how it was from video 1. I’m assuming you used a sharpie to colour in the engravings? Yeah, don’t do that.
