Well most of the time he is sarcastic and Phoebe even said that people like after spending some time with him .... So he doesn't make a good first impression but you know he is perfect for long term.
Just an example from real life. I am not the most attractive guy, lets say I am mid. Not bad, nor the best. And I always picked the girl "out of my league" only thanks to my humour. I am not sarcastic guy, but very often the funniest one around. And thats the key. Humour + the little bit of courage

He was pretty awkward, not the best at romance in the early seasons, and didn't exactly like his own job like Ross and Monica despite the bank he was making... It's like he goes from being a great painting with his friends to a blank canvas with romance, and most of his relationships became like Squidward's art...

We honestly don’t see much of Chandler’s mother. The next time I remember seeing her after S1 was at his wedding, But I can’t confirm nor deny that until I get through the whole show again.
