My GTO blew up with 55k miles with a 6800 limiter with built heads cam and long tubes. My oil pump was also broken when I tore the motor apart so maybe I just lost oil pressure and boom…. I was just cruis down the street
Did you hit the limiter often? That can be really hard on oil pumps. But yeah, as a general rule I’d try to keep any LS (except the LS7) to a max of 6500 unless it’s built. LS7’s rev to 7k from factory and were supposedly tested up to 8k though.
@@rayzie8599 01 specifically i believe, they can hold similar power as z06’s as reliably too. Could swap to z06 heads or just get aftermarket heads. And those automatics are gonna need love either way lmao
6700 RPM shifts -- That's pretty high- do you still have the car, if so, have your ever had any RPM related issues - bearings - rod bolts etc? I am just getting comfortable with 6500 and saw this - let me know please!
@@dylstnl6621 Called CAGS. It’s a lockout GM put on the manuals to lock out 2/3 and make you shift 1 to 4 when it lit up. Always turn it off in the tune lol

Meanwhile I'm doing 20 minute track sessions constantly running these rpms with a $120 oil pump, $65 ls2 timing chain, $160 valve springs and $180 trunion upgrade. Been doing it for years, even after having an oil cooler house failure that starved the motor of oil for 3 seconds on track. Go out and drive your damn cars.
Toys4Life C5 I have the cam card somewhere it's a comp 281-284 595 598 with Cam on a 112 LSA I think the RPM range is like 18 to 68 or something pulled really well above 3000 Indra and drivability was good it's still manage to get 32 miles per gallon on the interstate and averaged about 24 City
Thanks for the response. So probably a 226/232 at .050. Per your tach in the video, pulls hard to 6700 and beyond. I am thinking it would really like to rev to 7k - which is too much for the stock bottom end. Do you think a 224/228 would be a better choice. I am thinking of a cam only upgrade for my 02 LS1 M6 and that is why I am asking.
depends on what you what to do with it daily driver it would be a good cam but the bigger cams really wake these things up and I have turned my ls2 in my 240sx to 7500 on stock bottom end

@@alexvillalobos7137 the gearing is completely different between the Corvette and the GTO in a C5 you can go 120 at like 2,000 RPMs in 6th Gear 45 or 50 is like a thousand RPMs so obviously you would get tremendously better gas mileage in something that is idling going down the road
If the washer fluid was full it would pull to 7400 and add 25 hp across the powerband. 😆 A properly cammed ( springs, oil pump, etc) LS1 motor has a lot of potential and durability at very high rpms.

I believe 02+ are the good years due to something with the driveshaft. Id look into that topic more if you want a c5👍🏼

You want 01’s they have the stronger ls6 rods unless ur getting a z06 then it doesnt matter. Where u located?

It's an LS motor.. they are made to rev to the moon.
@@MrJimbo666 Uhhhh... Absolutely not. The stock redline is 6500. If modded, a bit more. Rev any higher and you'll be saying goodbye to your pushrods.
Rev limiter was set at 6800 beat on it for 50k miles with no trouble but it only had 40k miles when I got it
@@MrJimbo666 those LS engines you see revving to 10K are all destroked and fully built. A typical LS engine or any V8 only revs to about 6K
Cam kit and trunnion upgrade on any LS will enable up to 8300rpm safely
