  • Turmeric milk, also known as "haldi doodh" in India, or olden milk in western countries, is a warm and soothing drink made by combining milk with turmeric and a few simple spices. It's an age-old Indian remedy often used for its natural health benefits. My recipe uses both fresh and dried turmeric roots to give the milk a rich, earthy flavor. Black peppercorns are added to enhance the absorption of turmeric’s benefits, while a bit of sugar balances the spice with sweetness. It’s a simple drink, but one that is both comforting and flavorful.
To make haldi doodh, you start by gathering the ingredients: milk, fresh turmeric root, dried turmeric root, black peppercorns, and sugar. Fresh turmeric adds a bright, slightly bitter taste, while dried turmeric deepens the flavor. The milk acts as a creamy base that carries the spice, and sugar adds just the right amount of sweetness. The black pepper is key because it helps the body absorb curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, which is believed to have many health benefits.
First, peel and grate the fresh turmeric root. Fresh turmeric has a bright orange color and is often used in traditional Indian cooking. It's slightly milder in taste compared to dried turmeric but has a sharper flavor. If you're not used to handling turmeric, be aware that it can stain your hands and surfaces, so you might want to wear gloves or be careful with your cutting board.
Next, in a small pan, heat the milk on a low flame. Add the black peppercorns, sugar and mix it well for a minute on slow flame. Add grated fresh turmeric and the dried turmeric root to the milk.
Once the milk has simmered for about 5-7 minutes, strain it to remove the pieces of turmeric root and black peppercorns. By this point, the milk will have turned a golden yellow, infused with the essence of the turmeric and spices. If you prefer a smoother texture, you can strain the milk twice to ensure it's free of any bits.
Haldi doodh is best enjoyed warm, especially before bedtime. It’s a soothing drink that feels comforting and relaxing, with the earthy flavors of turmeric and the slight spice from black pepper. Simple to make and filled with natural goodness, it’s a great addition to your routine.
