Hey Bob, it was great seeing you at the Convention! Great job fixing the blond barber pole Predicta that will be raffled off by the museum soon. Incorrect resistor value in one of the couplates! I have one just like it I hope to get around to restoring. Great video showing around, and we can hope people who could not make it this year might next year!
What a score on those tubes! There must be a long ton of the things around for them to sell at such a low price. Still, all you need to do is find a use for one tube and the lot is paid for. Thanks for the tour!
Not really. You have to understand the auction audience. 2/3 are older guys that will never bid on anything. Others are teenagers with limited budgets. I'm probably the only one there actively running a side gig restoring TVs
Thanks for these videos Bob. Can't believe there isn't anyone out there who knows how to rebuild the picture tubes who could or would teach someone at the museum the process so they can start rebuilding the picture tubes.
There are people at the museum who know the basics, but they don't have time to be rebuilding picture tubes all day. There are people elsewhere in the country who know how to do it, but nobody wants to move there to Ohio to rebuild tubes all day. Nobody else has expressed interest in moving there to be trained to rebuild tubes all day. How about you? You could move to Hilliard, Ohio and rebuild tubes all day! :)
@drussell_ I'm afraid I don't know anything about rebuilding picture tubes, but no,I wouldn't move anywhere my cars would rust. :) I drive finned mopars daily, its hard enough to find 57-61 Chrysler products that arent rusty out here in California. Im assuming by the tone of your reply you dont want the job either, right? 😁 I was merely echoing Bobs sentiments, that it's a shame they have all the equipment in that room just sitting there. I wasn't implying they should turn it into a 7 day a week full time job churning out tube after tube, but maybe someone local would be willing to do one or two a month? The 21" Predicta crts would keep them busy for a long time. I just hope someone keeps the knowledge alive. Now I'd they were local and willing to teach....
@@Suddenlyits1960 I would love to rebuild picture tubes, and I already have a deep understanding of how the process is done. Unfortunately, the museum is over 3600 Km from me, and I'm not able to immigrate to a new country just to rebuild tubes. 😉 About 15 years ago I happened upon listing for an estate sale that had a tube rebuilding plant set-up for sale and I wish I could have bought it, but it was thousands of miles away, I couldn't afford it at the time, nor did I really have enough space to set it up and put it to use, either. 🥲 sniff... sniffle... P.S. I have three Mopars and wear my Mopar hat every day. *Mopar* or _no car!_ 🤤
I may go to the swap meet in the fall but definitely going next spring. I have 2 projection TVs to sell. One is a later Advent and the other is a Runco that cost more than my Prius. both are CRT sets and the Runco was high definition. The Advent works but the Runco won't start up (may be standby power supply problem).
Where was this? I mostly work on 30's thru 50's radios, record players, reel to reels and consoles up to the early 60's as well as tube guitar amps. Although most guitar amps are very simple, I have been doing my own designs and even modding existing audio and old PA's for guitar. For years I have been wanting to try a TV but where I live in New Orleans there are never any shows or swap meets. I have only once seen a somewhat intact Magnavox console which had a radio and record player, but the guy was asking $500 and wouldn't go lower than $300 and there were some concerning condition issues like the back was gone and the connector for the tube was broken, the record player was missing parts, there were also veneer issues. Oh, and I bought a Philco console but the TV guts were missing. Maybe one day I can find a chassis that will fit it but there are simply no outlets for me to even attempt to score a 50's set so I am at a loss. Problem is I would have to fly somewhere and how could I get my plunder home without spending $1000s. I guess the people around here threw their old sets away. Any advice?
What happened to the guy when they first got that equipment and get it set in that was being trained by some of the ones that work there and he was supposed to retire in 2009 and then start working and doing tubes cuz he had actually worked with some of the ones there making tubes cuz there's a video of him using the equipment and doing a picture tube at the museum
He moved to the Northeast and is setting up his own equipment. Distance and work requirements made it impossible for him to continue at the museum is my understanding.
Omg you walked by a tv with a vu meter in the front and lots of switches wtf was that ? It's at 4.57 time in your video you better go back and get that

Thanks Bob for allowing those of us who couldn't make it. Lots of neat cool thinks to look at wish I could be there.

Who is or can rebuild the CRT guns.Where does ones get parts
Thanks for showing us everything!👍
I remember going to a ham fest. I always went crazy. Buy everything I could. I haven't went since 1993. I ran out of room.
Yeah, I remember a little Sony I had, really a lovely clear image, despite the CRT being somewhat tired

1:13 Used to have that type of switcher in the ENG trucks at one of the stations I worked at in the early 2000s
Grass valley 1600 series, you could blow up a deathstar with that. I didn't see the rest of the electronics bay that goes with it.
wow you put these videos out fast. was nice seeing you there.
Love it, Wish I could make it sometime soon
I'm definitely going next year
The junk show is great! 😄👍

You should borrow a bigger car for this trip. Thanks for taking us along
No no no. Lol, it's good to have a limit or I'd need a bigger house
I know a guy who rebuilds... someday lol
Hmm, you don't say 🤔

You need to buy the house next door...
Or sell some more sets. I plan to start doing that seriously next year.
If somebody knows how to rebuilt crt's , can you still get CRT guns ?. Because what good is to know how to rebuilt CRT's if you cant get guns >
They have a stash of NOS guns, possibly there's a source in Russia. Finial option is to recoat the original cathode and reuse gun
Omg you walked by a tv with a vu meter in the front and lots of switches wtf was that ? It's at 4.57 time in your video you better go back and get that
LOL, belongs to someone else. He was working on it. National TV-7 Videometer. antiqueradio.org/art/NationalVideometer.jpg
