Don't forget that she studied media at the university of amsterdam. Amsterdam has the best media faculty in the world, ranked 1st at QS by subject.
what's QS?
@@giovannimannelli2158 world university ranking
Still a joke subject
I feel like a lot of people don't quite realise the difference between a 'hogeschool' (hbo) and a 'universiteit' in the Netherlands. An universiteit is really based on research and science indeed, whereas a hogeschool is more practical and less research, and a 'mbo' is mainly preparing you for a certain job (mostly) without the research and science. This is something that they don't really put on their websites I think, since it is something that is well known in the Netherlands itself.
Anyway, really sorry to see you go, but I hope you did enjoy some of your time in Amsterdam! Wishing you the best of luck in the future !!
I’m looking for a Uni in the Netherlands which one do you recommend me ? , hogeschool for sure most be and easy financial support
We have a similar concept here in Canada. The university is where you do higher degrees and research and colleges prepare you for a specific jobs and are easier to get into. I studied at the university of Toronto and I'll be doing my masters at UvA. But what she said about the university life is so true. I don't mind if I don't get the experience since I'll be doing masters and need to focus on my research and studies but I hope I wont' regret going to UvA.
I think its just a difference in school culture which isn't a negative thing. I come from a French school abroad and the school never organized events, didn't have sports teams and didn't contribute to our life or happiness and yes it did feel like a job, however i was incredibly happy with my social life and happiness because I still was able to find these and have fun because my friends and classmates from all classes always helped eachother out to have fun so for anyone from a European school system I recommend, from a North American, I don't recommend
So, in short... it is too hard, too much study, not enough practical education and fun... As an MSC in Aeronautics & Aviation sciences, I can confirm... To anyone moving from abroad to the NL, be aware, studying in Holland is hard work! It is based upon science & research. A DEGREE IN NL STANDS FOR A REAL DIPLOMA! Compare it to studying at a renowned uni like Oxford, Cambridge or Yale, Harvard... Iow it is Hard Work! Sad to see this girl go through...
Don't forget that she studied media at the university of amsterdam. Amsterdam has the best media faculty in the world, ranked 1st at QS by subject.
American and European unis are so different. I come from Europe and once been in an American college. It seemed so easy to me after European education. I felt like they treat us like we are little kids. I got used to that I am on my own when it comes to studying. I mean I wanted this so I work for it. So I totally got your point if you come from that culture you expect that and when you face that it’s completely different here it must be bad. For me this type of education is basic and I pretty enjoy it. Which one is better is depends on preferences.
I would push back on that! When I was an undergraduate student studying abroad in Europe, I enrolled in Masters courses at the university and they were so much easier and relaxed. School felt like a part of life as opposed to your life (which is how I feel it is in the US since, at a small liberal arts college, you live on campus in a small town and don't do much outside of academic work). As an undergrad, I received the highest honors in a class full of masters students without really even trying? Maybe it was the university itself but its ranked in the top 100 in the world so who knows. Just my experience! I really valued my US education and European education equally.
@@saraha9038 what was the university?
@@saraha9038 what university was it and in which country? Because I died in Europe while it was so easy for me in the US
@@saraha9038 Call bullshit on you there.
😂😂all of the reasons u said why u wanna drop out is the reason why I wanna go to that Uni just shows how much of an introvert i am anyway I hope everything worked out for you 😊
totally support you girly! thank you so much for making this video, i was planning on apply to uva and i’m so glad you made this
slayy queeen
For more hands on, the Dutch system has the university of applied sciences, the UVA is a theoretical university. And it has sports facilities…. and a lot of social activities but organised by students themselves. Not by the UvA.
What she means is that the uni life in Europe is different from North America. She's saying is different not better in terms of quality education (sometimes it is). But all anglosaxon countries are like that, if you look at the UK they have campus based universities with all the characteristics she mentioned. I know that because I went there and I'm Italian so I can compare the two countries.
Yeah I get it culture really affects a persons point of view, i live in Turkey and Turkey doesnt have that American type of university culture either and for someone like me (who didnt have the privilege of having a great university culture where i live) going to The Netherlands and getting to see their university culture would be fascinating and interesting. Your dissatisfaction is definitely justified, but others like me will probably be more than happy to be there
I wish you the best and good luck ❤️
Nothing is wrong with changing your plans.. happiness is very important. Finding yourself and what you want to be is a work in progress. Good luck! I enjoy your videos.. :)
I want to say that the website isn’t a “lie” it just isn’t as descriptive as one would have hoped! I guess many descriptions are open to interpretation! Don’t hang onto that one thing that I said haha I also did not do enough research! ❤️
Thank you Brynn! Good luck for you future!
Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I'm rethinking of my decision to go to Europe for college
we support you and all your decisions brynn ❤️❤️❤️❤️
❤️❤️
Wish you all the best on your move back to the great white north! I’m sure my son will miss going with you to hockey practices! Good luck to you in the future. It was a pleasure to meet you.
Bob Conrod thank you!
canada white ? not anymore bud
Kudos to you for your honesty. Culture shock, lack of information, finances are all factors international students should consider. From my college experience however you don't get the in-depth 'core courses' aka hands on opportunities until year 2-3. Looking forward to your moving back home videos. Best of luck on this new journey, it's great you experienced this young.
Question: did you consider trying another city and uni? Utretch, Rotterdam etc come highly recommended
I'm going to be going to university in Canada, I think that will fit what i'm looking for better!
Hey Brynn, which student accommodation were you living at? It looks nice and light!
I will be attending HAN's University of Applied Science in Arnhem .... Have you visited that part of Netherlands or do you know someone who is attending that school
Good luck with the move! Updates!!
also, your TATTOOS! I saw a Van Gogh??
Niki Sørensen yes!!
Too bad Brynn! Hope you enjoyed your time here though. Even if you didn't do as well as you wanted to - when they convert your credits they should recognize the difference in grading - and if they don't make sure they do! The highest averages in my programme are only a 8.5s, and even with an 8 friends of mine have been accepted almost automatically from Cambridge, LSE, Oxford, Columbia because of how hard the grading is here! Sending you positive vibes! It takes a lot to make a life decision like this so be proud of yourself!
Thanks claire!! I hope so, I'll make sure to mention it! thank you ♡
Hi, Were they accepted into the first year or they transferred?
I study Media and Information at the University of Amsterdam as well. I'm super depressed and wish I could drop out too. Completely agree with the whole university culture bit. It does feel like a job. Wish I knew these things beforehand. The only thing colder than the weather here are people. Good luck for the future !
Abdur Rehman Lashari can you give me some advise/ examples for the program?
I look forward to study it as well. Already familiar with the uni system.
Are you from Indonesia? if you are, can you tell me how come it feels like a job, how 'bad' is it? And what makes it differenf from the study in Indonesia?
All universities here in Europe feel like a job. There are no stupid frats and university should be like a job. You are preparing for the future and the point is studying. I am from Slovenia and our school system is 7th in the world, just behind Finland, Japan and countries like that. USA comes in 35th place, not sure about Canada. It was probably too hard for her because universities here want you to work hard pretty much all the time. So I think that is the reality. If u come to study to Europe, be prepared for lots of work and stop dreaming.
@@jureivkovic5772 Not completely true what your saying about frats, we have a ton of frats (studentenverenigingen) in the Netherlands
You are so right! Just to let you know, there are definitely some Dutch UvA students out there that feel the exact same way. I managed to go to a good uni abroad for my masters, and it feels like I finally escaped the horrendous Dutch educational system, which is basically a gigantic pass fail system. No one from outside of the Netherlands fully understands the system which results in it not being internationally oriented at all (both for foreigners and Dutch nationals). I was so happy to get my degree over with, so that I could move on from that uni. There are no words to describe the stark difference between Dutch unis and UK & US ones.
Hi! I’m from Portugal and I’m going to apply to the Netherlands for university and not gonna lie that scared me 😅 I’m going to study Business Administration either at Erasmus University Rotterdam or University of Amsterdam. I can’t afford US or UK unis (after brexit) and the course seems a lot more interesting + I really want to experience going to uni abroad. Do you think it’s a bad choice? Thank you so much!
@@sophiablass3379 same here! the netherlands is kind of my only option because of how expensive UK and US are for uni :(
@@sophiablass3379 olá Sofia, estou na mesma situação que tu! Falaste com a information planet? Eu estou a pensar em candidatar-me para Amsterdam, apesar de ser um gasto considerável. Já te encontras na universidade? Conta me a tua experiência
I’m sorry to hear this but I’m also happy you realized you weren’t satisfied and decided to do something about it. I know you probably are not in the mood to talk about it, but was the problem with the media and information program your personal matter (meaning you weren’t as interested as you thought you were gonna be) or do you think the whole program is a problem in general? I’m kinda interested in it, but there’s not a lot of personal experiences on the internet so I don’t know what to expect ahahah anyway, best wishes for you. Even if I don’t know you, I can tell you are a very hard working and motivated girl and I know you’ll find your path. Good luck!

what was ur decision

Nicely said "You gotta do what's best for yourself" - that being said, you're not a quitter. You realized what it is that you need, and you are taking action to pursue the things that you believe will make you happy - and THAT is admirable. Bravo!
Is your apartment in Amsterdam available now? ✌🏻I'm currently looking for a place in Amsterdam and your apt looks awesome. Thanks in advance
I got it through UvA's student housing + DUWO!
I feel like north American unis are better in the sense that they help in ur overall development. As an Indian student where college is equal to studying and studying only, i dream to go to university in north America as they offer so much exposure
i didn't know i needed the message until i came at the last part of the video. thank you, brynn 🥺♥️
Good luck! Always do what’s best for you!

Come to Montreal! We are cool people!!
Hello everyone!! I’m wondering if someone could help me or advise me..I’m thinking of applying in UVA for a masters in clinical psychology. I don’t mind staying inside, studying, that’s what I did anyways for my bachelor (lets say I’m not a party animal). But I’m just curious about the level of difficulty. I’m currently studying in uk in a good uni my grades are good (first and high second) but I consider myself as an average student (I’m not with a book in my hand all the time). Any help or information would be appreciated also sorry if the grammar is not perfect..English is not my first language.
I feel like if you want to do film you should have done media and culture instead of media and info since it leads more towards the film industry
I'm Dutch, studying at uva and I completely agree! I went on exchange and that was the first time I experienced like a community feeling and I miss it soo much. You should definitely go to Canada and study there, good luck with everything
After watching this video and reading your comment, now my desire of studying in the Netherlands is completely gone. I really want to study in a european country, but I don't know which country I should study in, of course the one in which the student life is not boring.
@@inggrisisasi1940 You could try the university of Utrecht! Amsterdam is more of a bigger city which makes everything quite unpersonal. Utrecht is a lot smaller but still amazing. There are a lot of exchange students and there is overall a very good atmosphere and everyone is open for conversation. :)

UVA is super chill, compared to other dutch universities lol
what other ones?
@kriz lee I'm applying to Leiden University and UvA, coming from the US. In what ways is Leiden more work than UvA if you don't mind me asking? Like more tests? More papers? Thanks :)
@kriz lee hmmm ok thanks sm!I'd like to be able to enjoy free time and the experience of finally living in NL, so as long as I can fit that in somewhere I'm good. Thanks!
Any info about Twente, please?
What about Vrije university?
you just saved my life.
Is there not a big party culture / social life in amsterdam? I'm thinking of applying there but I'm scared that I'm going to miss out on the whole college party thing
Hey! There is a party culture definitely but more in the club/night life scene. You can join a student/study association as well and they usually host borrels/parties but I find they are not as inclusive for non-dutch students. If you're looking for the whole 'college experience' and 'college party' life then I would definitely look elsewhere because they don't have the same traditional college experience as Canadian and American Universities. (:
“You come here to get your degree and THAT’S IT”.
I went to a city based art school in the U.K. with under 3000 students in the whole school. The same city also had another huge 30,000+ university and there’s such a split between the attitudes of art school and the university. I honestly think that’s the deal with art universities and normal universities. You don’t go to a specialist university unless your craft is your entire being. Partying and social things always came second to our creativity, with most of our socialising being in each other’s studios.

Aena Mustafa did you mean to submit this as a general comment? Haha. I only went to a U.K. school so can’t comment, but I have a lot of American friends who preferred the U.K. syllabus because it was more focused. Not to say the US system is bad, it’s just s lot more generic than U.K.
it depends on if you want a generic degree where you try everything or if you want to specialise.
Also if you’re in the U.K., I totally recommend doing an art foundation year. If there’s none in your local area, specialist art units will tend to offer then as a “year 0”. They’re just a great way of exploring your craft before you specialise. I did one myself and always found that you could see such a difference between the people who DID an art foundation and those who didn’t.
I think the US really is dumb with uni... like the college experience is just like a fieldtrip... youre not children. But idk I guess thats just us europeans tryna work hard not just play hard. A lot of ppl dont like it first year because finding friends is hard but people love it second year

Annarita Marinaro did you have to take an English test or something?
No because I did English in my final exams
dont!! just come to Amsterdam & visit it, and the study is AWESOME!
@@annanasrita992 So how was your first year ? are you disappointed ?
Pure necessities. That is really Dutch. You go there, do our thing, and leave.
like we should... americans are like babys
You are courageous to move to a new country your first time living away from home. I think you will have a lot to offer as you become more educated and get more experience. Maybe it would be useful to travel some more, and perhaps do international volunteer work, to help ground yourself further before commiting to a program of study.
You seem to have forgotten you got into a multi-languages environment with a system you are not used to. So when the language is catered to the common denominator. It also feels like a new language, just the text is not to your liking. Seems the theoretical stuff got the better of you, particularly the historical parts...
That means you had little 'free time' because you are tested every month. That is hard, and it also less of a social life you got used to in Canada. On top of all that you lack the home front you were used to.
Good luck, and all the best 😎
your eye shadow so beautiful!!

Oh, you wanted to remain as a child and attend at school with a merch shop and "school spirit"?
Tbh you'll find the real world rewards adults way more.
Sorry to be harsh, but adult life the job market can be harsh. University is there to prepare you for adult life.
for a media and culture student this was incredibly boring to watch
you did the right thing , i didnt have the nerve to do it
sorry to see you were to weak, wish you all the best !
Lol too soft for europe eh
Why are you blabbering and not coming to the point directly.
Because she is not dutch to be direct. The culture she comes from is more nicer in attitude and inderect in way of speaking . :)
dont waste your years at university , get on the spot , do the real thing
less vlogging more reading maybe ? just a thought
