One of y favorite albums of all times. Along with her Live album
Fun fact: my mom is one of the back up singers on the track Bag Lady I think that’s so cool.❤
That’s epic 💯 this album is a straight classic
That is so cool, I would live off that my whole life lol
hella dope!
❤
Epic
Bag Lady is so poignant as a (Black) woman, considering all the baggage (trauma) we carry around starting in girlhood. The music video more clearly gives examples of the type of baggage the Bag Lady carries around, but at its root the song it’s about how we hold onto our traumas to our detriment, and how healing through love (from someone else, yes, but mostly of ourselves) can make us better
The song is certainly geared to black women but as a black man bag lady is one of my favorite songs from her. It's a good life lesson in general.
Green Eyes = 5 stages of grief
I love the song and that is a good point. The song goes through the stages of grieving a loss in this case losing love.
The song is in my top 5 favorite songs ever. Mama's Gun is probably my 3rd favorite album of all time.
100% and totally feel them every single time I listen. Check out Erykah's Tiny Desk concert which is on UA-cam - OMG cuts to the core!
That’s exactly what I have called it all these years😂
I always loved the song. When I got older and found out the meaning, it made it that much better. She is a true Icon.
I don't think people realize that Green Eyes is not just a movement through a relationship until its end but also sonically through musical time periods. From a swing blues type feel, to a R&b funk moment to a modern hip hop feeling.
This album got me through my 20s. Now I'm in my 40s and it is still the top staple in my rotation. It's even more profound now that I am more seasoned.
Same here
INDEED
Exactly same! It means something different every decade of life. Just timeless❤
SAME. I still remember when it came out, and I still listen to it all the time.
My daughter is 25, I listened to this so much, it's now also part of her rotation ❤
This album was her reactions to losing love. She had broken up with her son's father, Andre 3000, of Outkast. This was her cleansing and it helped the rest of us deal with what was ailing us. In my case, an ugly divorce. Unfortunately (or fortunately) my adult children still know all the songs by heart. 😂
Especially green eyes😂 mannn this album had me in a chokehold
Facts!!!!
We felt this album so far
Right, I thought her 3rd album was when she was dating Common. This was definitely her healing after her and Andre. Helped me through my 20s and still does now.
One part you missed at 22:46, "See, i be that gypsy flippin life game from the right brain" is connected to her then-lover, Andre 3000 of Outkast, and his line from the song "Rosa Parks" where he says, "I met a gypsy and she hipped me to some life game, to stimulate and activate the left and right brain." He was talking about Erykah. Dope reaction video, once again! Your Pops reaction to "Orange Moon" was what I was waiting for.
Ooh thank you for that !
Oh my goodness! I can’t believe I never realized that. Woww thank you.
You guys have to do D’angelo - voodoo next, these two are definitely sister albums
Yup definitely
Brown Sugar album should be first
Yes that production is beautiful and really similar because questlove did most of the drums on both albums
Please 🥺
Yes yes and yes , my second favorite album ever 🙌🏾
This album can go into a time capsule
Yes sir! It's perfect
I knew Orange Moon was gonna make your dad cry!! It makes me cry too. The words and music are just beautiful. This album is my favorite album. I have waited for this review!!!!
MY FAVORITE SONG!!!!❤
the birds at the end just perfect
Yeah I knew Dad would feel that one
Mine too
@@siedutchez8558 mine too!!
Green Eyes is a song that creeps into your soul. I didn’t like it the first time I heard it, but then I lived some more life, dealt with grief, and then it hit.
So true. When I was younger I would skip it. Went back and broke down.
Same, Kiki…..same 🥹
Same its devastating when you relate
It’s become my favorite once life start lifing.
I love that on Orange Moon she says "You rule the day, I rule the night" In reference to Genesis 1:16 God made two great lights! That is why she also goes on to say "How God it is" Reciprocal Love between two people is the greatest light we can experience ( The Moon to his Sun)
I love that song so much 🥹❤
She was not referring to the Bible. But the Sun (Man) and Moon (Female) from the 5% Teachings.
I think that's the beauty of the song. Many can hear it, interpret it differently & still feel the same emotion of "How good it is🎶" no matter the context. She understood the assignment❤
This was recorded at Electric Lady studios on the same equipment/instruments that Stevie Wonder used on Music of My Mind and Talking Book.
Jimi too ❤❤
Yep yep
And you can hear it. I put Erykah & Stevie in the same category in terms of being able to tell a story with amazing transitions within the same song.
I saw her perform during this tour. When she did P Philosophy, she totally rocked the entire house, and staged dived and was carried around the room by the audience. I'll never forget that concert. One of the best I've ever seen.
seen her twice and will never forget
I saw this show too. STILL my fav. Concert.
Ive seen her perform it a couple of times but i never truly appreciated this song until i saw a school of rock group cover it. Not that they were better by any means but their earnestness put a different perspective on it.
She’s a beast live. A phenomenal performer. Love her vibe.
I've seen her twice live and each time BLOWN AWAY, her vocals were so much better than studio vocals!!
This album is a great Segway into the Soulquarians. It's like a musical avengers. Common Dilla Q tip D'Angelo Erykah Roots Slum Village Blackstar Bilal etc some of the greatest music came from this short lived collective. Voodoo by D'Angelo is a VERY high recommendation. Nobody is reacting to it on YT and it is musical crack.
The background singers include N'Dambi and Yazarah, two great singers in their own right. And I'm so happy Dad got to hear Green Eyes.
Thank you so much for this comment...I heard Yazarah's song Starship years ago on the radio. I've been trying to find it since then but I had her name wrong. As soon as I saw her name in your comment, I searched and found the song right away.
N’Dambi is so amazing! The storytelling and soul on display in her song L.I.E are incredible. Miss Erykah always has top tier talent with her, including Durand Bernarr now
@@dulceypicante122 Durand be sangin'!
@@sdj1207 If you ever get the chance to see her perform live, do it! She is a mix of Nina Simone, Betty Davis and LaBelle.
Yessss
D'Angelo's Voodoo and Common's Like Water for Chocolate both came out of this same recording session. An amazing trio of albums.
Them Soulquarians were the soundtrack of the early 2000s soul music.
This album got me through some tough times. I discovered it 10 years ago and it floors me every time.
This video was so wholesome and it made my day. I look forward to sharing music with my son.
If you haven't yet, go see Erykah Badu live. You will NOT be disappointed!
We actually did see her live - this summer. Phenomenal show. And I totally get how this LP gives comfort and inspiration. Thanks for watching. - Kai’s dad
I agree!!! I’ve seen her twice, and each time was a different experience.
James Poyser is a producer and multi-instrumentalist. He is most known for his work with the hip hop band, The Roots. He is also a member of the SoulAquarians. The SoulAquarians formed around the time when D’Angelo was working on his album Voodoo. During a recording session James Poyser, Jay Dee, Questlove and a few session musicians were talking and realized they all shared the same zodiac sign…hence the name “SoulAquarians”.
Her background singers have similar tones to their voices. The incomparable Betty Wright (R.I.P.) is one. Yah'Zarah is the voice you hear that sounds almost exactly like Erykah's, just higher. The others are N'Dambi, Chinah Black and June Bugg Young. I had to look up the last two.
I know this album word for word. Watching it with you made me forget who much of a banger this was from start to finish. Watching your dad’s reaction is pure love. Orange Moon is and has always been my favorite from Erika’s, followed by I Want You.❤ I thoroughly enjoyed watching this with you.🥰
When Dad cried to Orange Moon, my tears fell right with his. I didn't understand that song until adulthood and it gut-punches me whenever I hear it. So magical! Also, your breakdown of Green Eyes is perfection! This was a joy to watch!
Just gotta say its nice to see people still this moved by good fuckin music
Absolutely
Thank you so much! I felt Dad really wasn't grasping the totality of green eyes until you explained it. I was sitting here punching the air when you broke it down. Great job 👏🏾
You're right, Kai's explanation helped me out a lot in terms of grasping the meaning and uniqueness of this track. As did the input of others on the channel afterwards. Thanks for watching!
The beautiful thing about Erykah's music is that even if you miss the lyrics, you understand from the movement of the music and her vocals. True music.
22:47 - that line was a reference to André 3000's first two lines from his verse to "Rosa Parks"
"I met a gypsy and she hipped to some life game
To stimulate and activate the left and right brain"
Amazing ✨
I was probably about 20 or 21 when this album came out. Mind was totally blown and still is. It just walks with you in life. Side note: I think dad is totally head over heels for Erykah now and would throw his underwear at her concert while wearing crochet pants 😂😂😂
I cried, I felt so many emotions, and it continues to solidify why Erykah Badu is my favorite artist. Thank you for showing appreciation to her remarkable work and voice. Ase
Came for Green eyes and fell back in love with this whole album 💚. Thank you guys for the review.. Green eyes is so soul stirring.
I love your channel but this episode holds a special place in my heart because I love this album. It is my favorite of all times. I was pregnant with my first child as a young 21 year old and I remember taking evening drives along the Ogeechee River with the windows down singing loudly to him in the womb. It really warmed my heart to see your dad have such a connection with this work as well ❤
That’s beautiful :’)
Orange Moon is one of my favorite songs from her!!! I love that you’re sensitive enough to feel it.
Erykah did a live version of this For the Tiny Desk Concert. I tell you it is my favorite live performance.
Perfectly stated, There are albums that Blow your mind, Break Your Heart, Leave you Speechless, BADU is all of them however She Dispenses VALUABLE LIFE EXPERIENCE & WISDOM (FOOD 4 THOUGHT) That, for me personally, has shaped my Views and Ways of Living Life. Being in my 20s when this was released was a gift that I wasn't aware I was in need of. Great Job Gents, Hope you keep Diving into her Discography.
P.S. Love seeing the BJORK Post Album in the Background 💥💥🥰🥰💥🤩🤩🤩💥💥💫
Erykah is just on a whole other level when it comes to creativity. She's amazing.
And I loved seeing the Bjork album back there too. Bjork is another artist who bucked the norm and created some amazing songs.
One of the best albums that I’ve ever heard in my life. I remember getting this CD around when it dropped. A guy in my section when I was in band in college told me that I needed to go get it. Once I put in my car….I knew it was an Instant classic.
I've always thought of Green Eyes as a vocal piece with 3 movements. It was a standout when I first listened to the album when it was released. So poignant. Structurally unique in the context of soul music.
One of m favorite songs of all times! Never felt like it got the recognition it deserves… it’s basically genius!
When your Dad started crying I was like 🥹🥹🥹... It touches me when men cry idk y... My grandpa was a cryer and I love him so much for showing the duality of the "strong man"
I also have “crying” men in my family-so sweet…but strong and loving protectors❤
I absolutely love how quickly and accurately your dad identifies elements within the song and structure that makes me chuckle to myself.
One of my absolute, hands down, favorite albums of alllllll time!!!! Love Dad’s reaction! His ear for music and attention to detail is impeccable! This was such an enjoyable video!
Because he’s such a fan of Erykah, please review Jill Scott’s The Way-Live in DC version with Mike Phillips!!!
Booty is so underrated 🔥
This whole album is a masterpiece.. lyrical and musical genius 🙌🏾
This is by far my favorite album, by my absolute favorite artist. And Orange Moon and Green Eyes are my favorite songs. I enjoyed every moment of you all exploring the album. Thanks again for sharing your experience with us.
This album gives me goosebumps every time I listen. I’m so glad you guys listened and connected to this one!
Orange Moon was a tribute to her son... Most of her first songs in the beginning were about him....She literally found out she was pregnant after she was signed by her record label. Her CD was released the day he was born 🥲😘🥰😍👑 allegedly
Cool fact
Not this album. Her son was born in late 1997. Her Live album was released on the day of his birth. Some Mama's Gun songs were definitely about her relationship with Andre 3000, namely Green Eyes. Might be that Time's a Wastin was dedicated to her son.
@@SoulCity11000 Thanks for correcting me 😘👍😘. Sorry for the misinformation...
@@tanishapearson5894 no worries love 🥰I am just a crazy Badu fan since 1997 🤣
@@SoulCity11000 I am too... Well at least I thought I was 🤣🤣🤣 Sending out wrong information like that. Erykah would be pissed 🤣🤣🤣
When I first heard orange moon and green eyes I knew she was a different type of artist.
Yup. Dad was floored. I cried and I've listened to this album a bazillion times. I need some tissue.
Dad is going to become a 5% LOL
This album should have been nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammys. This album is art.
This album/cd STAYS in rotation for me as does the rest of her cds. I've said this repeatedly on other platforms & I'll say it again here: this cd HELPED ME COPE THROUGH MY DIVORCE years ago.✊🏽 Bag Lady? I mean come on. Initially when I heard it, I didn't understand that she was talking about EMOTIONAL BAGGAGE. Green Eyes? It was like she was going through my range of emotions while the divorce was happening. So many hits on this cd! **WHEW**THANK YOU E. BADU!! ❤ you my sister! And of course, she was the very 1st concert that I went to.😉
I’m about to go listen to the whole album again. ❤
Right now!!! Lol
I want this album on vinyl so badddd
I got mine from a company called Merchbar they have a lot of stuff
I have it
I have it and it is truly one of my most prized possessions.
Through her albums one can see her talent is remarkable and obvious.. I was a young teen when her first album was released and I’ve been hooked ever since… when you watch her live? mind blowing talent she is a walking masterpiece and legend 💜🙌🏽
❤ this reaction. I've heard Orange Moon hundreds of times and I was 😢 right along with your Dad. It just never gets old. She is a treasure.
I cheered so hard when Dad started tearing up on Orange Moon. That song legitimately changed my life in sophomore year of high school.
Does anyone one else hear a little Chaka Khan in some of these vocals?
Yeah for sure, she has said that Chaka Khan is her favorite singer.
Oh definitely. If you listen to her badu live album she does a cover of chaka khan "stay" and says Chaka is her favorite artist. She did a great job with the song.
My favorite memories of this album is me and my Gma driving back home from my Gdad's funeral (they were divorced). My GMA was such a character much like Erykah. She absolutely loved this album and got a kick out of the Booty song! I'll never get that laugh outta my head! Miss her so much
I know I'm late to the party but Erykah Badu is a phenomenal artist. She could sing the phone book and I would buy that album
Ironically she has an entire mixtape/album about phones. I think it’s my favorite of hers.
The live Baduism is my favorite album of hers and Mama's Gun is my solid number 2. It has been so long since I've listened to the whole album and I know once I get Dad's reaction I'm going to have to give it a listen. This is going to be my Saturday clean-up music. I love you guys!
That's the legendary jazz vibraphonist Roy Ayers on Cleva
THIS MAN IS IN LOVE WITH MUSIC!!!! I LOVE THE DAD
We need a India Arie - Acoustic Soul reaction
Y’all have to listen to her New Amerykah. That’s the next album after this one. My favorite song is The Healer it’s the second song. Such a vibe!
I always think Orange Moon is, at least in part, about her son. “I reflect the light of my Sun (Son)”
I saw her live at Radio City when Mama’s Gun was released. She had two or three opening acts, Bilal was one if I remember correctly. It was an awesome concert that went on till almost 1am! When she performed Orange Moon and Green Eyes, you could hear a pin drop. Very memorable, loved every second!
This is my favorite album of all time. If i can only play one album - This is EVERYTHING!
I used to wear this CD OUT, but its been a while. Thanks so much for sharing your journey with me. Truly enjoyable!
I said it before here. This album is what I listened to while I was a cook in the Navy. Every day I had this album on repeat.
Orange Moon and Green Eyes are my favorite
It’s like a psychedelic funky ride I use to walk to school to that whole album 💿 I always got there faster ❤
My favorite From Miss Badu. Mama’s Gun is flawless.
Really enjoyed the video thank you for sharing this with us!
i got this on vinyl and yall got me going back to listen harder. well done and enjoyed.
Thank you guys soooooo much...I haven't heard that full album in almost 20 years❤❤
I smiled as soon as I saw this video in the news feed!!!!❤❤❤❤❤ you guys are so great!
I love this. You do such an amazing job introducing these amazing once in a lifetime artists to him
this was a great video. I stayed and watched the whole thing. i love how proud you are to explain these different concepts to your dad. I also love how you've analyzed the album. It gave me a new appreciation even after 15-20 years of playing it. so thank you!
Seeing you both, these wholesome father and son moments make me cry.🤍 your dad is a Gem, never take him for granted.
Thank you for doing this. Mama's Gun is my favorite album from Erykah Badu
Thank you for this amazing review, of this amazing album. You guys helped me realize things that I hadn't noticed on the album, and now it just made it even better. Amazing 💕
Just came across your page and I must say I Love the Love you and your father share for music!!! May Peace Love and LIght continue to embrace you and your father!!💙
I think Pops got a crush on Miss Badu & I ain’t mad at em😉
Lol naw fr !
Love this. Glad I caught it. Brady’s homage to the stages of grief in green eyes is brilliant. I also like that you took the time to get some understanding of the NGE so that you could understand some of the terminology. You almost got the symbol representation right…will watch more.
You have no idea how much I enjoyed this, possibly one of your best reaction videos. Thank you so much!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is one of my favorite albums . Thank you for reviewing it. Green Eyes is on a whole different level. I’m so glad your dad was able to enjoy the experience! 🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾
I always love your thoughtful discussion and appreciation for the music. ❤
Thank you so much!
I really appreciate the energy you two have. In a world where we are trying to do the most to be heard or "think" about every moment you guys just exist and its so refreshing. So needed. Yall my cousins now.
I have loved Erykah and her music and albums and I know how they’ve made me feel and seeing your dad listen and feel these feelings and be wowed for the first time is always beautiful. I love re-experiencing music through him. Love you guys and what you do.
I love so much this artist ! I’m glad you listen her together
the kind of content i love, thanks for this!!! please do eryka’s tiny desk next
This album is perfect from start to finish 10/10
When I first heard "Green Eyes" my first thought was... "she's a crazy bissshh over this dude"... but after the 1000th time of listening to it... it made more sense... many of us have experienced the SAME range of emotions and insecurities. Dad may not have felt it the first time he listened. Maybe after the 100th time, he'll get it? ;-)
I love her performance of this song on Tiny Desk....Epic
@@MrTee12 That performance took me out ☠️
Awesom reaction as usual! Im totally here for more Erykah!
I also would love you guys to react to a Nipsey Hussle Interview to build up to his music! That would be soo amazing. Especially the ones with Big Boy are profound. I know you only reacted to music or music videos but I think a lot of people would tune in for that.
Love you guys❤ greetings from Hamburg, Germany
This era of R&B is one the greatest 🙌🏾❤️
Great reaction!!! I would love to see your Dad's reaction to Lauryn Hill's albulm "Miseducatuon of Lauryn Hill "❤
Yessss! Start him with a couple of Fugee songs then her whole album
They reacted to the whole Fugee's album. You should check it out. It was a great reaction too!
I LOVE THIS ALUMB!!! She one of my favorite artist!! ❤❤❤
I tell you, you guys are the gold standard when it comes to reactions to whatever music you choose, I feel like I am in a masters class, I learn so much about music i listened to so many years ago. Brand new perspectives, I am so blown away, I just discovered your channel about a month ago, tune in everyday, gonna become a patron, which I have never done before. This Erika breakdown had me on the floor just had to lay down and listen, when Dad cries I do too. Thank you Kai and such an inspirational show, more to me than reactions.
okay post vinyl sitting on the shelf in the background😍😍😍😍
One of the best albums EVER!
Whenever I start playing this record I can´t stop or pause it. Always got to hear it til the very end. It´s like sitting in warm water when it´s freezing cold outside. You feel so good listening to it that you can´t stop it. Brilliant music - perfect art.
I feel like there can be a whole segment on green eyes. The change in music. How she uses her voice as an instrument.🎺 My God there’s so much to dissect. But I enjoy how this album is affecting your pops. Great content. Keep it up.
Green Eyes is like an entire orchestral movement. And gosh, of course I was in a relationship back then where that song summed it up perfectly. Erykah has always been the bomb.
One of my favorite albums of all time. So glad you guys covered it and can't wait to see you guys do Black on Both Sides, which is definitely up there for me as well so I'm hoping dad likes it 😂
