It's amazing to see all these guys at grid life spend tons of money and sorting time on the engine, shocks/suspension, seats, roll cages on their cars and yet maintain crappy(or stock) brakes.
Great video Matt. Back in the early '80s my uncle drove a Volvo 120. It was modified for light auto crossing but I don't think he ever did, lol. I remember my grandfather rebuilding the transmission one weekend and my uncle driving it back to college that Sunday night. I love the odd balls, keep them coming.
Reminds me of the first time I found out I had bump steer in my 80's celica build coming down from Big Bear. It was then that I realized maybe I shouldn't have done away with the power steering just yet, the wheel would get yanked so hard already under compression and then hitting uneven surfaces in corners, it would throw my hand off completely. Just lucky enough to where I was able to keep one hand on and not die. I thought it was just a corner thing, maybe I hit a bad pot hole I didn't see. Then later after inspecting the suspension realized the ball joints were at a really strange angle and not an ideal one. It was a handful, scary and a hell of a memory all at once. Seeing you try and tame that amazon really was fun. Not every track or canyon build will be perfect, but if you drive them the best you can, they can still hold their own. Props for not backing off too much Matt, it's a fine balance between pushing it, and wrecking it.
TheGryf0xxx I'm not sure if it's his brakes or if he has very aggressive track pads that need a lot of heat to perform well. I would think that mustang brakes would be more than enough stopping power for such a light car and he did say that there wasn't any fading. Maybe Matt will get on here & clarify.
It's a little sad he doesn't give the context of pumping brakes up before a braking zone or after one. You'll see the same habit in a Spec Miata series. Your braking will be crisper with a touch more heat in them because you're using race pads and as you heat up the race pads the bubbles you thought you bled out will collect in the worst places. Pumping helps keep the pressure up, it maintains heat, and it gives you a little input where you stand before you have to rely on them. Anyway, this is a race car that's using race pads instead of more surface area to generate grip. You need heat to make them work and heat creates bubbles so a tap or pump check is a must. Every instructor I've ever had did this as habit I noticed be it an M3 or a Spec Miata. Farrah, deal with it, adjust accordingly, at least the guy let you know what was what!
@@iamstd2 I was really thinking about putting a t5 in mine, put i wasnt happy with all of the mods that had to both the engine/ oil pan, and the crossmember of the car, not to mention the adapter plate, clutch and trans issue. I have decided on putting a GM ecotec LTG in my 67. Its on my channel. Note, my car was a complete mess of rust when i got it, so its not like i'm riping into a nice car haha.
Woo a volvo! Shame its a track take theyre so boring edit: Track one takes aren't terrible, but I do enjoy them a lot more when the owner of the car is riding with Matt. Also you gotta enjoy a bit of scenery too.
Well in the track videos he rambles too much - it's understandable because it takes more focus to drive, but it makes a less enjoyable watching experience. I don't mind that some take place on the track as I can just skip them, but I prefer the on-road ones myself. Owner being in the car.. thats a mixed bag. Some of them are awesome, some of them are like watching potatoes grow.
One of the fastest cars in the UK is a modified Red Block 1968 Volvo Amazon estate. Easily the greatest wagon I have ever seen! And the thing fucking rips!
The car is super cool....very clean...and fairly rare....it's also probably home built on a modest budget....it's not perfect....but definitely way more than most can afford....including me....
That's what I thought, the engine comes from a DSM, but I had an Eclipse GST in mind. Great engine swap, very rare to see it longitunally mounted in a Volvo
this whole time i thought you got your bike fixed. new bars and shit didnt know that was a temporary bike... i really wanna see you on your dream bike my friend... you need to go out and get that harley
aaaargl I'm guessing the owner didn't swap the rear end for something non Volvo... because Volvo made like 2 LSDs in their like entire existence so finding an LSD that would fit in an amazon doesn't seem plausible
Technically, it's probably not an Amazon. The American version used number designations on this model. Anyway, it'd be cool to do a raggare build with one of these. There's one in my town just sitting in someone's front yard, baking in the Arizona sun.
He's not wrong actually, 4g63s (usually the sohc 8 valve) is also in some forklifts and other equipment. As was the father of the 4g63, the 4g32, and a bunch of others.
The 4 to 2 to 3 gear change workaround doesn't require you to engage the clutch upon reaching 2nd, but rather that you simply snick it into 2nd. Sounds like a problem with a detent on the the selector shaft, maybe.
Matt, I think you should add another requirement for posdible cars to be featured in you One Takes. Which would be: Working Brakes. Even if they are not the greatest, they should be functional. Just looking out for your safety Matt.
Ahh, the car is amazing, but it needs a 5 cylinder Volvo swap. I'm all about keeping it in the family, but the 5 cylinder will sound so much nicer and suit the car more.
Matt, a couple of times you 'engaged' 2nd gear, on the downshift (and the engine screamed), before engaging 3rd -- surely you could have gone to 2nd (with the clutch IN) to line it up for immediately engaging 3rd gear.
Yes! I've been waiting for someone to feature this car! I've got my own RWD 4G63 swap in my Datsun 510. It's pretty easy and I love the platform. #4G63510
i love the volvo amazon, and i like the idea of a race prepped version, but really a mitsubishi engine in an volvo. could've used an volvo s60, or v70R engine. the car looks awsome :)
Hey Matt, just a suggestion from a long time viewer (been watching you for about 5 years now)... would love to see you change things up a bit, the videos are starting to get a little boring and redundant. Maybe do more boat reviews, or do vlogs of the car events you go to, just ANYthing.... but after 300+ videos of you sitting in a car driving up and down a road, I think its time for something new :) Mean that with the utmost respect, love what you do!
Hey guys i just bought one of these cars, im thinking of engine swapping it. What engine should i go with? An ls will fit with a lot of cutting but a t56 behind it may be tough.
Yay! An Amazon! My day's been made!! 6:15 Be glad it doesn't have stock brakes. They're even worse. Discs in the front but you really really need a brake booster... or elephant feet.
I have never clicked a video so fast, i need an amazon in my life, but it will have a T5 swap, not some japcrap shit, yes the 4G63 is bad, but it doesnt belong in a Vo
2,600 pounds seems heavy for an old, small car in race prep format. My Integra stock is barely more than that at about 2,700 pounds, with full interior and all.
Can someone please give Matt a good Volvo he can drive? Not to disrispect the other ones, but the S40 was mildly tuned and the T5 S60 was FWD, and this one doesn't even count as Volvo now, please someone give him a full built S60 R Chivic 😂😂😂
I used to have a Red 850R - My dad called it the "Vulva" I said "Dad, you know Vuvla is a female sex organ!! He said, "exactly"" lol RIP Dad, you were the best!
That prancing moose logo on the wheel is probably the best trolling towards Ferrari i have ever seen. 10\10
Its been a running joke in the by the Volvo community for almost 50 years now.
I have one right on the front badge of my s60
No silly it’s Ferrari in f1 2020
Thought the same thing, wtf?

I think you misspoke, it is an unlimited slip differential..

I didnt catch what rear end it had?

People are trying to kill him with the shitty cars with awful brakes.
TheGryf0xxx I'm not sure if it's his brakes or if he has very aggressive track pads that need a lot of heat to perform well. I would think that mustang brakes would be more than enough stopping power for such a light car and he did say that there wasn't any fading. Maybe Matt will get on here & clarify.
no power brakes are very hard to use
It's more entertaining when he's in sketchy cars.
At least this time he knew what he was getting into. Sort of.
It's a little sad he doesn't give the context of pumping brakes up before a braking zone or after one. You'll see the same habit in a Spec Miata series. Finally an amazon!! I own a 64 that has twin weber 45's. Great little car.
I love those old Volvo Amazons! Such a cool looking car!
tat2titan I agree. - a Amazon owner
Nothing like running a bucket faster than it should go to keep the wheel skills sharp. Good job not getting killed.
I knew a girl in high school, her dad had a similar Volvo 4 door. Warmed over Volvo motor. Rode in it a couple of times, it was pretty fun.
Great video and great driving Matt! Personally, I really enjoy these track one-takes and the brutal honesty. So nice I'd like it twice, if i could.
Best lines I've seen Matt drive consistently on track...focus makes a difference.
I like this car. Tough, unforgiving, it sure teaches the driver.
Great upload. Took me racing in a car that took more than just a steering wheel holder to go fast. Thanks man.
Driving that car in that pace requires a lot of balls
Please more one takes at the track... way more exciting then the streets...
Not quite as much of a shitshow as the Death Fiero, But down that same path of awesome
I'm a simple man. I see 4G63 swapped and I click the vid
Such a cool car. Although it might be cooler with a Volvo engine like a lightly breathed on T6.
ChaosphereIX except t6s are retardedly finicky.
The T6 is actually Volvo's least reliable engine lol. A T5 would be plenty and it would sound better too.
Could you explain why the T6 is the least reliable? The b6284t has the same bore as a b5234t.
@@TTURBOVOLVO just because the bore is the same doesn't mean much, the layout could be totally different
@@iamstd2 I was really thinking about putting a t5 in mine, put i wasnt happy with all of the mods that had to both the engine/ oil pan, and the crossmember of the car, not to mention the adapter plate, clutch and trans issue. You know something's up when Matt say's "This is going to be very interesting"
Woo a volvo! Shame its a track take theyre so boring
edit: Track one takes aren't terrible, but I do enjoy them a lot more when the owner of the car is riding with Matt. Also you gotta enjoy a bit of scenery too.
I'm a bigger fan of the on road one takes, but these are cool too.

Fun fact, if timing belt is on the right it's a DSM 4g63t. If it's on the left it's a modern 4g63t from an Evo.
Love watching Matt drive these older cars lol
I've got a 1964 Amazon myself, they're great reliable little cars
Such a cool looking car! If you're looking for a classic, this is definitely a solid way to go!
What a crazy combo

legit deathtrap... super unique build - fast and awesome, but also super scary at the same time
this whole time i thought you got your bike fixed. new bars and shit didnt know that was a temporary bike... i really wanna see you on your dream bike my friend... you need to go out and get that harley
A working LSD would've made this car probably much better..
he would have been sideways more than he would want i bet too.
aaaargl I'm guessing the owner didn't swap the rear end for something non Volvo... because Volvo made like 2 LSDs in their like entire existence so finding an LSD that would fit in an amazon doesn't seem plausible
Bob Sagit 1:50 tells you that is a ford rear end. Watch amd listen before whining.
In comments below video, "Narrowed Ford 8.8 rear end out of a 95 Explorer with 4:11 gears and Ford racing LSD. "
THIS is maaaaad! Fucking awesome idea. Love it
this mad? do a search for hotted up vovos in sweden
I think you're right Matt, it really sounded like a whole lot of one tire fire at the back.
Man the Volvo is sick a little tunning on it and it would be really awesome.
Technically, it's probably not an Amazon. The American version used number designations on this model.

'Hang' on while we process your request...
David Hahahhahaha
I had never noticed before this video how harry Matt's arms are.
Ellipsis of Triple Tap yikes
Oh god I spit out coffee when I read this.
The 4G63 is also in some forklifts in a slightly different format.
Wrong, 4g64.
He's not wrong actually, 4g63s (usually the sohc 8 valve) is also in some forklifts and other equipment. As was the father of the 4g63, the 4g32, and a bunch of others.
Jbwifi which brand forklift?
with the 4g63? caterpillar do one, and there are a couple of indonesian branded ones with them as well.
Jbwifi You know, I thought for sure I worked on a cat with one. Thanks for the confirmation, thought I was going crazy.
" I don't wanna be that guy" 30 seconds later.. goes in for the kill.
Lol reminds me of one of my buddy's 240sx no clutch but still lapping, nice passing and handling that thing round the track.
The 4 to 2 to 3 gear change workaround doesn't require you to engage the clutch upon reaching 2nd, but rather that you simply snick it into 2nd. Sounds like a problem with a detent on the the selector shaft, maybe.

Legendary motor surrounded by junk. Cool idea. Sub par execution.
that moose on the steering wheel makes the hole build worth it
You want to have a go in Guy Martins Volvo Amazon, that even has a Volvo engine pushing out 740hp.
My first car was a 68 Amazon, l had only 90 hp on a good day. Great video
My dad had an original one of those in the 60s I remember it was the first car I ever sat in as a little boy
Whats sinhalabana ?
Looks like a good time!
6:30 in and I just realized all the parts that are messing up are the Ford parts.. makes sense.
that thing sounds completely broken but somehow i like it
damn, what a beautiful silhouette!
This is so F'n awesome, what a badass video!!
Seems like Matt got into it after a bit.
Thats a DSM/Evo 1-3 style 4g63. Exhaust is on the passenger side.
It's about as Volvo as the Pope is Hindu...
I believe there was a speedhunters article about this car a year or so back
Matt did you get a DUI? Why all the track days? Kidding
Matt's hungover x1000.
That isn't an EVO 4G63. My bet it is an early 6 bolt 4G63 from a 90-92 DSM.
Jon Roberts when the hood went up I said the same thing. Not an Evo 4G63. DSM for sure.
Evo 1,2 and 3 had the same look as this one. It could also be out of a Galant VR-4, that's where my JDM swap came from.
Great video and thanks for sharing.
The interesting thing is that with the gutted interior, the Mitsu 4-pot mill sounds strangely like a Volvo B20 2-liter!
4:42 did I hear some good o'l running in the 90's eurobeat?
i always enjoy a good old car, going all out...
😍😍😍 way cooler than my 95 850 non T
That's definitely an early model of the 4g63. most likely the more durable 6bolt made before mid 1992.
what BOV is this ive never heard one like this is sounds soo unique
Amazons look awesome but this thing seems super scary
Great driving!

Here's a top tip: Don't bet your money!
The engine looks to be from a 1g DSM and has the coil pack ignition mod. Bet it was super sketchy when the boost came on!!!!
