Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome is a history-based real-time strategy game released in 1998. It's the official expansion of Age of Empires
➣About the gameplay:
Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome Trial Version was my first pc game I could play on my own computer. I replayed this map for countless times and hours. I loved the Rome-vs-Carthage setup.
➣About the video:
The original resolution was 1024x768.
I upscaled the video to avoid a brute auto-downscale to 720p from YT.

The great thing about this demo is that it felt more like a whole game it and of itself.
Imagine me, 11/12 years old, no web connection, not a natural english speaker, trying to play this with no clue at all. In the end, this is exactly what sparked my interest not only in ancient warfare but history in general. (and also, improved my english).

same here in the year of 2008 I was 9 years old, also none English speaker. But I managed to play it somehow, but now in the age of 25 I understand perfectly English 🙂 the good old days.
The most confusing thing was why the roman legions were so much stronger than yours but also why cavalary was pretty effective against them... the trail version had no info about civ and attack bonuses.

When I was a kid of 4 year old, I enjoyed playing this game and this mission was tough. After many tries & hours and hours of playing, I destroyed the enemy Wonder to become victorious. I love Age of Empires series. Best PC games of all time!

Помню играл в детстве в эту кампанию. Моё стартовое поселение под ноль разносили жёлтые корабли, а потом и десант. Я отправлял на север карты крестьян, и основывал там новое поселение, пока враги уничтожали первоначальное. Там в лесах ещё есть легион, который становится твоим, если его обнаружить. Помню, я смог уничтожить жёлтого игрока, но красного одолеть не получалось. Наверное, придётся вернутся к этой игре и закрыть гештальт))))
Ahh, the demo...this was my first time ever playing an AoE game. I remember being kinda clueless, clicking on houses and wondering how to get the units out of them, building a Wonder, going around the map and cutting down as much wood as I could...ahh, to be a noob again.
i remember my father had bought his pentium 4 back in early 2000s and we had installed aoe demo version which was available in windows 98 original cd. Ahh my sweet childhood and my quality time with my dad. I miss those good days

There was an army that you can find it in the top of the map, wheni discovered it, was so happy. I was playing this when i was 8 or 9, and keeping my computer on all the time cause i couldn't make a save for it.
God, how I played the demo campaigns of this game. My dad had a original Win 98 SE installation media that came with a bunch of trial versions of their flagship games, one of them being AoE: Rise of Rome. I was 10 years old, I guess... spent hours on end playing it. Good times, man, good old times. This game gave me my first experience in binge-playing.

Yeah, best tactics ever! After getting there, it was a pleasure to watch yellow bleed from resources till they start to produce axeman, and then u know... elephants go bonkin! As i remember correctly, on that island there were army waiting to join us!

i remember population was 50. I built an army of like 10 priests and the rest hoplite/later phalanxs. I endup converting all my enemies which take hours and finished the mission with like 300 mens LOL

I think the population cap was a big error by the developers. It limits remarkably the fun and the size of battles. I really don't know why they put it in the first place, and why so damn low, only 50 men available? That accounts also for ships and villagers. At least they should have put optional upgrades to further the size of your army.

Damn, when I was little I would play this scenario over and over... When I got bored of the actual objectives, I started to explore the entire map.
There used to be an advanced hidden army in roman territory which would ‘awaken’ once you explored that area.

Holy... I haven't seen this map since the early 2000s! At the moment it's hard for anything else to beat the nostalgia i'm feeling right now.
At my childhood i remember only having the AOE1 demo with this trial and the AO2:Conquerors Montezuma 1. Even if the experience was limited, it gave me countless hours of fun. Me and my sister together might've played this trial a couple dozen of times.
As far as i remember, my dream at my childhood (regarding the game, of course) was to convert one of the enemy catapult triremes - because they look really menacing and stylish. I'm not sure if it's possible to do so, maybe the enemy had something like heresy from AOE2 and it would be in vain, but the priests were usually killed before succeeding conversion D: Didn't even cross my childish mind to micro them, i just made them stand there and pray that it would work haha

I remember this game along with AOE 2. Those were the best RTS games of my childhood. Makes me sad that the physical discs don't work with Windows 10.

YESS!!! those 3 games WERE my childhood! My dad told me there were 2 racing games and one boring civ building game I wouldnt life. while I played the other two, AOE has stuck with me for life!!!

If I had to choose between starcraft, Warcraft 2, command and conquer red alert 2 and Age of Empires, then I will choose Age of Empires first and Starcraft & Warcraft 2 secondly and CnC RA2 thirdly. I love AOE. :-D :-)
i honestly think this game kickstarted pc gaming for me when i was a kid, not sure where i even got it from, i think maybe like a microsoft tech demo cd or something? This, stronghold crusader and aoe 2 will always be the OG's for me. Still a copy of this i got in a cereal box lol

I was searching for this, I didn't know anything about what I was searching for though. But finally I have found it. I had farmed 80% of the resources in this map and still lost, lol.
I remember when i was about 6 i asked my dad to download a «demo» for me, so he got this game. It was like a 22MB file and took all night with dial up modem to download. The next day he explained he had to unpack the files cause they were compressed. Good times
I remember as a kid playing this at cousins house, never got far but loved it
I remember when we were young me and my brothers playing this demo over and over again, we fighted our way inside red's base in order to let Brown's priest (brown team is somehow captured insides red's colosseum) confess our troops then brown literally started building around the south island. That's just been amazing times and an amazing game!

I first was very bad at playing this game..
But then I discovered a trick.
You create a transport ship, put a villager on it.. Transport the villager to the north.. Untill you find a land behind the yellow civilisation.. But guarded by forest.. So they can't attack.. There you will find an entire army waiting for you and plenty of resources to build a city.. And a army. Then using onagers/stone throwers, you can literally destroy the yellow city from their back and above(on a ridge) and they can't attack you back.
Demo gave me really good vibes the music was amazing. Played this for hours.

Lucky for you, there's Definitive edition with far better graphics.
it's still not even in a closed beta mate. And it's Windows 10 (Windows Store) exclusive.
AoE works perfectly fine on modern computers, There's even an unofficial patch available online which lets you play the game in HD resolutions :)

I actually never beat this demo as a kid, being like 6 years old or something like that (non native english speaker). I didn't understand a thing lol, but I loved it. Used to make a couple monks and convert the initial enemy cavalry. Did that many itmes. I've recently downloaded the definitive version and beat the punic war campaign in honor to my childhood tho. I absolutely loved the graphics and my favourite unit was the legion, aesthetically speaking. This was in late 90s btw, old windows 95, no internet.

The beginning tricks are the same as my ones: foundation of the wall to block the entrance, deleting that particular peace of wall near the tower. Using transport boat is probably a good move, but only in case when yellow ships are not agressive that is rare on hardest (are you sure on hardest?). Also red has some cavalry units on his base, so you need also archers....but where is cavalry? Again seems like are not on hardest. Also Yellow do not attack properly. Why don't you show difficulty in the begining?

Yeap. When they attack the tower, I can kill them very fast and move on to the resources.
Magnatio Pretty sure this is not hardest. If it were, as soon as a blue villager was seen in red they would be crushed by no less than 15 catapults.

I also played this exact trial version on my pc, when I was a kid. It was one of the very first pc games, I ever played. I think it was included in the Windows 95 Disk? Because that is, from where I always installed it (from the Win 95 cd) and played it days after days :D

I was like 5 years old in 1999 in india playing this mission on a bootleg copy of this game ... My fave mission took me 5 hours to beat it on easy after 10 tries

Nice strategies
This is the only map that I played for a long time when I was younger. This is not the hardest difficulty. On hardest the only way that you will survive is to flee your starting area and either go north east and find the gaia or hard south (there is a little cliff box area you can defend). The initial waves are full of catapults/calvary/ bowmen from red with simultaneous long swordsmen/ballista/boats from yellow. It is possible to complete this on hardest, however it takes serious patience. Make sure you are good at hiding.
You clearly underestimate the power of a preemptive attack, or of wololos for that matter.
I remember when I played this demo years ago, I also hid in that box further south, but I also used Wololo to convert the yellow Elephant units because at the time I really liked Elephants but I wasn't smart enough to figure out how to make them myself, but I was smart enough to convert them 😂
I played this version when i was 11. I over took the yellow color ones. I think thats romans and also built a wonder. In the end i ended up wearing glasses for playing for hours

초등학생일 때 했었던 캠페인인데 15년 전은 된거같다. 애들 스타크래프트할 때 난 이거 했는데.. 영어를 읽을 줄 몰라서 발전도 못하고 매번 지기만 했던 캠페인이었다. 결국엔 할아버지 유닛으로 빨간 팀 일꾼 200명 이상 끌어와서 이겼었던거같다. 200명 이상 끌다보면 빨간 적팀에서 새로운 유닛도 나타난다. 마차끄는 유닛이었는데 딱 한번만 보고 더 이상 보지 못했다.

I just returned to it. It still brings more fun with less "mind-busers" than currect titles. Recently I finished two maps with 3ops'es in moderate dif level. Each map took me like up to 3hrs using slow gaming mode. Everything looks same as gameplay besides roads^^ There are no constructable roads in this game.
Edit: Roads are available in QOL MOD but idk it is constructable.

ah, memories. I grew up playing this and commando 2 on miniclip. Another honorable mentions is hitman 2 and total overdose. You have no idea how much have i tried to get the chariot by myself instead of converting and to this day i really dunno how can we get that chariot. If someone knows, let me know.
