    Of all the types of model kits I’ve built, fire trucks were always the biggest test of patience

    UPDATED
    Thank you for this outline. You have a remarkably efficient description.
    A decade or so past had I all three of AMT's 1:25th-scale kits of the American LaFrance Fire Trucks, as well as another Pumper Truck and a Hook and Ladder Truck sometime prior. Before I could complete assembly--I had been building together the three chassis, engines, and drive trains--all were stolen. 😠
    My circumstances since have become more austere. If I now had the money to replace them, I would buy groceries. 😟 SMH

    This was very educational sir ,I have the Ladder Chief ( packed away right now) and I learned a lesson on how to put these things together. Despite the 300 parts , you presented it in a way that was very understandable. This particular one is on my future build list, along with the pumper . I'm also a volunteer firefighter of 10years.

    The kit issues before this one was a "Hook and Ladder." It similar in length and the ladder boom extend out about 18 inches. I haven't seen it on EBay for a couple years. Both are great kits.

    I've just bought this kit ! It's huge, won't be building it for a while but I'll be keeping this vid in favourites for when I do.
    Thanks

    Built the pumper and the ladder truck 40 years ago in 1978. Built them in Denver FD livery. Since AMT shipped the body parts in white, didn't have to paint the body, just the trim.

      I do not think I have ever seen a fire department let its apparatus be other than gleaming spit-shined. I do not think, other than tire wear, weathering is applicable to fire apparatus.

      @@RightOnReplicas just a minor question: are you sure the ladders should be painted aluminum? I believe firefighters use wooden ladders because wood is non-conductive and fiberglass would potentially melt.

    • @RightOnReplicas
      @RightOnReplicas  4 роки тому

      WK, That's a great question? Perhaps one of our viewers knows the answer! -Doug

    • @jmchinch
      @jmchinch 4 роки тому

      Right On Replicas most FD’s use aluminum ladders on their apparatus but I believe some departments on the West Coast ( LAFD, SFFD ) still use the wooden ladders

    Great job guys as allways I think when i get arnd to build mine I'm gonna change it to a tandem axle set up,moving the 1st set of outriggers to the front behind the cab,and spray the dullcote on the aluminum deck plating .

    I remember these once in a while popping up as build-ups at NNL swapt meets. it dawned on me, if you took the motor from it, that it would be great for a wild rat rod build. you see many really rod with really strange engines. I think this one would a good idea for that.

    Fantastic job on the American LaFrance fire truck Doug! Question, does the cab tilt forward to reveal that Detroit engine?

    • @RightOnReplicas
      @RightOnReplicas  4 роки тому

      JG, No, your best look is prior to assembly of the cab to the frame. After that you'll have to see it from underneath! -Doug

      If you don't glue the top engine cover you can take it off and look at the engine whenever you want. Its optional in the instructions.

    Hi, Doug. You've done it again. Awesome work, great job. Beautiful model. Whatta pissah. Big boy, huh? How many hours did you work on it? To be honest, big kits scare me. My brother, a retired firefighter, loves it too and says hello. Thanks for sharing. All my best. Lou

      Hi, Doug. The model came out great. Sure, it's a big boy. 24 hours for you but would take much longer for me. I am not as good as you are. Thanks for the teaching and inspiration. Lou

    • @RightOnReplicas

      Lou, 24 Hours is total application time. I don't count the time that I'm just letting the parts dry. Anyway, you should just build at your own speed and enjoy the hobby! -Doug

    AMT sucks. If Tamiya made this kit it would probably cost over a hundred bucks. And I'd buy it.

    • @RightOnReplicas
      @RightOnReplicas  2 місяці тому

      DP, These are old mold designs, but with a little work they make a reasonable facsimile, but a modern version would probably cost closer to $175. Either way, you get what you pay for. You are using to much paint on your dry brushing,and probably the wrong brush to. You are also trying to do it in one pass why too much paint. The bristles on the brush should bee worn andfaned out and trim about 1/4 of the bristtles. Slow and steady while removing extra paint on a paper towel. Also try removing paint off raised areas to expose the plastic if white. Another solution
