Don't mistake this for not being a proponent of growing our own food. Instead it is a reality we face with the costs associated with growing food here. Another option is for us to supplement with purchasing cases of produce from local farmers which we are also doing. I know the gallons for the garden was 225 vs 200 which was a value for half of the water. But it was an easier estimate and reality is gardens take more water vs the critters.
I know I’ve probably said it before but there is hardly anything we grow in the garden that we couldn’t buy cheaper when all factors are considered, even with the cost of food today. Squash is likely the exception and any specialty items like rare berries. Perennials are real cost savers if you can get plants to come back. That being said…. I love being able to go out to the garden this time of year and harvest food anytime I need something. Saves a trip to town. I also really enjoy helping others to eat fresh veggies. That is what keeps me going! 🌺🥰
Oh I agree. Sorry if I wasn’t clearer. Some folks with wells don’t think about the cost per se because I have had folks tell me the water is free. For us it is not. And we have the added worry about lack of rain vs an endless supply of water from the well. You’re doing amazing! I love fresh food so much. There is absolutely nothing like growing your food and picking it. Similar to raising a cow and having your beef in the freezer. Such a reward!
Everything looks great despite all the challenges you face. We are sooooo wet right now. It's raining right now and we're expecting another inch of rain tonight. After two summers of drought, we now have standing water. Yikes. I hope the hail avoids you all summer. Thanks for the tour Lisa!

I think it’s smart to be looking at what and how much you grow in regards to water needs. When you’re hauling water it’s a must! We had to do that and I totally get it. Hey Tammy! I know you get it. I thought it was a good idea to show to our subscribers. Not everyone realizes the water stuff. Fiona and Eleanor are looking great. Wish we knew an exact date but dang I am excited and hopeful both are pregnant! They’re great mommas! We will see how co farrowing goes this year…they often squabble. So have a back up plan in case. Garden goal is to grow 1.5 -2x what we grew last year so hoping we hit it! Thanks friend
Great tour! Hehe, the forgotten bed. I think I have one of those too. Your onions look amazing. I remember when you couldn’t get them to grow at all! The tomatoes really recovered from being leggy. Looking awesome. Interesting that one area in the pen is so muddy. Hail netting was a great purchase. If you garden for 10 more years that’s only $30 a year. One average meal out. We used to share a well with the in laws and water cattle too. It was so frustrating during the winter. Our well is only 2 gallons a minute. I try to water 1” a week all at once. They really need it by the next water. Awesome stuff Lisa! 🌺

Something clicked I guess and learning they need a lot. The ground gets so dry and cracked. Then the water comes and basically runs off that way. It settles right there. Eventually we want a barn there so time to change things up. We can drill our own well. But we are hoping not to have to do so. We will see. Hail netting I agree. At least if you get some rain you don’t have to water. Thankful for that 3/4” we got because it got us through 2 days without watering. We think the roots froze in the strawberry bed. Not 100% though. We had most of them since 2020 and they sustained colder winters. Weird
That lettuce looks nice n safe in there. The garden looks good. It is a struggle though with such cold temps and the hail. Crazy your spinach is bolting already. Wow

The Bresse are cool but so small compared to the Cornish. I can’t wait for piglets! Hate not knowing when! Haha yeah it was hot for them so they dug up the ground to lay there! Stinkers! Today was pig hosing weather!
@@YogiHollowFarm Have you tried using pine straw to mulch your garden to conserve water? Alot of people will say pine needles make the soil acidic. They do not. Pine needles are only acidic when green. When dry they aren't at all.
I have used pine straw in the past and currently on our currants, raspberries. Have not noticed a difference yet at all. Correct dead pine Needles do not add acid. I’ve not found benefits from pine mulch as we don’t have enough of it. Ironically. But we found actually getting water to the soil has been helpful given the hydrophobic soil behaviors

It’s definitely expensive. Worth it but honestly have to look at costs. Watering is expensive for the gardens since we water daily. No substantial rain at all. So can’t even collect any. Are you able to collect enough to get you through extended dry periods? Does it cost you to haul water? We are analyzing costs as it appears to be cheaper to get cases of produce from local farmers. The yields are so much higher vs what we grow. Our climate often stays way too cool and night time temps are cooler. Slows productivity of plants.
Everything is looking great. We are lucky we haven't gotten hail in several years. Love all the raised beds. It's supposed to get in the 90's day after tomorrow. We are getting ready to go out and clip some chicken wings. There are 3 that fly out. We'll seen this evening one had been digging in the beans. Looks great Lisa take care.

Sometime the forgotten gardens are the best. Funny always good to see chickens in the back ground. those American Bresse chickens i wanted to do them but they said $25 per bird and i thought they were nuts. in that spot you talk about i have seen people lay down hay so it turns into good grass soil. Wow that hail is real tuff to work with. Crap all rain that fell you have to find a way to harness that water and fill totes wow. great video Lisa thank for sharing.
Very true! Crazy chickens are always in the background! Lol. They’re expensive for sure. We got them on sale for $16. If we choose to breed them it would be worth it but not for meat birds to buy each year. Great idea! We are hopeful to build a barn so we are going to put stone. It will eventually be the base for the barn. That’s the plan now anyway. We do collect rain for sure. Thanks so much and God Bless

I shall remember your situation next time I go to gripe about dragging a hose across my backyard 😉 I didn’t plant anything last summer to give me a break from watering in the heat 🥵 while being eaten alive by the mozzies 🦟 (mosquitoes) and to keep my water bill down. We have long, very hot summers here which requires daily, sometimes twice daily watering during the peak of the season = $$💦 Until I can (if ever) have someone to help me build a shade cloth structure, I plan to only garden over the more pleasant winter season 🌱
It sounds like trouble but it’s routine since we do it all the time if that makes sense. We did not mean to discourage gardening at all. Instead share the reality of the challenges we face here. We often supplement by buying cases of local produce to preserve so we have enough since growing is a challenge. You also have a challenges environment to grow in and you’re doing what you need to do which is great. We used to water twice a day but backed off. So we grow basics that can thrive.
