"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on UA-cam. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on UA-cam, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

That would be great! Unfortunately, Shapiro avoided a debate with Kyle at Politicon back in 2018. Kyle did well in his debate against Michael Knowles, which was a panel discussion back in 2018 and in his debate against Charlie Kirk in 2019.
Shapiro only debates college students and even then he has his body guards pull them off if anybody pushes him

I grew up in a church and Christian school. I can say with confidence no one shares the exact same beliefs in that religion. Every time a new worship pastor or lead pastor would come in, there were accusations that he came from the devil. It’s insanity. The school I went to would pull me from basketball games for being “unchrist-like” but never explained to me wtf that meant. I worked to get expelled and left religion in the dust lmao

Basically he's just saying that the constitution and laws should be secular, but everyone should be religious on their own. So a president (for example) should be a devout christian but still not be able to officially govern based on that.

I think Kyle would do better against Prager than Ana and Cenk did; they were too loud and emotional and sometimes focused on the wrong parts. When you want to convince anybody that is on Prager's side, you need to be respectful and calm like Prager. And you need to focus on the important bits.

I genuinely think it’s hard for some of us to comprehend how someone like Dennis thinks. I grew up around people like this. Their daily life transcends data. It doesn’t matter what empirical truth is. What they “see” and “hear” is most important

This would have been so much better on TMR with Seder. I cringed when I saw their thumbnail because I knew Cenk wasn't going to be the butterknife rather than the scalpel.

When someone says "we should have a religious population" what do they think "should" be done about the people who choose to be non religious or choose a different religion to their preferred religion?
I’m an agnostic and on occasion I go to baptisms and other events in church and I have to say the teachings of the Bible that most ministers preach are so incredibly helpful for children to hear. You don’t have to believe in God but a lot of the teachings and the stories behind them are incredibly good for young minds to hear. My six year old has benefited a lot from hearing what they say and I’ve done a complete 180 on my thoughts around this and I believe now that if everyone went to church with a good priest the world to be a whole lot better place. It’s where children learn to be good people and there is no place for that teaching anymore.

I really like the point you made with arguing with someone with zero common ground. It reminds me of having a roommate in college who I disagreed with everything about. I remember I would talk about different solutions to poverty and he would basically respond that he just doesn't care about systemic poverty. That people just need to work harder.

I don’t think that poll means 62% of republicans want Christianity to be the state religion. They do want the vast majority of the country to be Christian. Almost all my family are conservative Christians and I think that is how they would interpret a “Christian country.”

Am i the only one who preferred when kyle would break down all the points people made in the video at the end instead of during? the constant pausing is really annoying. I much preferred the old way he did it by letting the whole clip/video play out then go point by point over everything they said.

a repeating incident during these debates is rightwingers denying empirical data and studies, meanwhile they cling on to already debunked studies, they also love strawman argument like how Prager thinks Transgender people don't believe Sex is real which just shows he knows nothing about the Left.
There really is a common theme with the prominent right wing UA-cam's that they are scared to debate the left. And in many cases when they do debate it's under dubious terms like Steven Crowder debating college freshman or Tim Pool bringing someone to his studio where he can do a 5v1 debate where his friends back him up.

This comes up so often and it's quite frankly extremely stupid. You want to see the whole clip you can look it up. You can usually see the name of the video he's watching. But if he did what you want, that wouldn't be fair use. His video would be a replacement for the original video and so he'd be far more likely to get struck with a copyright strike or at least have the video taken down.

It's not ignored, it is just that both side, whether intentional or not, loves to blur that distinction to win an argument. Whenever people are arguing the gender side of the issue, conservatives tries to make it solely sex. Whereas whenever people are arguing the sex side of the issue, liberals tries to make it solely about gender. This ambiguity is exactly what's causing a lot of the cancel culture misunderstandings and I genuinely find bad faith in these arguments.
