There was nothing to review. Whether or not play should continue is based on a judgement call by the ref on the severity of the injury. Play is not automatically blown dead if the goalie is injured and the opposing team has the puck. Wedgewood had an ankle sprain and was back in action in about a week. I would say based on the rules, not blowing the whistle and delaying medical treatment did not cause him unnecessary harm and that the injury was not exceptionally severe. It was the right call.
Good first 👍 Do run the audio through headphones though and give a listen, I am catching an odd oscillating effect that cleared up when the post game interview was run and then came back after.
Play should have been stopped. Now the referees are hurt by the coaches comments and are blowing penalties on the Avs. They screwed up and are still penalizing the Avs.
I'm still not convinced that that's not interference. It's not Kelly's fault Benson wasn't sure-footed enough to stay upright.. There's no push involved there; they're both turning at the same time, and Benson trips over Kelly. Kelly has as much right to that ice as Benson does
Considering the Avs have gotten penalized at least 3 times this season for goaltender interference in that exact same scenario (once against the Flyers I believe, 2 against Montreal, and probably more) surprised it's not brought up more. Refs had the Sabres moneyline in that game. Alas karma won that game for the Avs thankfully
Yeah the play needed to be stopped. The goalie was in a very defenseless position. They don't have nearly as much padding back there. If the refs are concerned about players faking something, they can call it a penalty. But penalty or not, it is a safety thing, they have to stop it.
@@username7763 Literally if he wasnt injured and pulled off his helmet they wouldve blown it dead... Also if you ask me they should be WAY more obligated to blow it dead if you're in a shooting lane which obviously the goalie always is..I also dont think people realize how cool calm and collected Bednar is 110% of the time so when he speaks up its not for nothing.
Hockey has to be a violent game with animosity for it to really work - be compelling and engaging. It's too much soccer-on-ice today, with players only trying to stick check.
Loved the video. Unfortunately, I think this will be copyrighted shortly. The NHL is the only league actively going through "found video" of their league and copyrighting them. Just a heads up! ;)
Sorry. It should NOT have been blown dead. What's to stop a goalie from doing that every time? "No goal, I was hurt, honest.." He got hurt because his player pushed someone into him. Shit happens. Oh well.
Good breakdown! I was at this game, and the change in atmosphere before and after that play was jarring. Honestly, first 35 minutes of this game were actually kinda boring. Didn't turn out that way!
The injured player’s team must have “possession and control “ of the puck before the referee can stop play. It is not “touching the puck” as the coach said, and even if that rule is sometimes fudged a bit, the ref should not deny a team a scoring opportunity, as was the case here. Yes, the goalie is down and out, but does he require immediate assistance? Nope, he’s going to survive, even if it hurts. This rule exists because goalies, being intelligent and crafty athletes, may decide to ‘improvise’ an injury in a desperate situation, hoping for a quick whistle.
Bit of feedback, I think you should change your mic back to MONO recording, it’s a bit strange hearing the audio oscillate between my earbuds. Good video nonetheless!!
Ref suck but I think the goalie, while probably hurt, did try to sell the call. Guy had hardly touched him yet and he dropped like a boy getting caught by his mom.
I’m gonna stretch here, but maybe the refs didn’t blow it bc the fall on wedge wood looked pretty soft and they thought he was faking it? That’s the only reason I can think of. No skin in the game for either team personally.
@@BeerLeagueGoalieGodfather I honestly think they're just human and it happened REALLY fast... My gripe is the consistency, and if video review is there to get the call right, make it right. I dont care if a team just runs their own goalie on accident without the other team involved at all, if the goalies down hes down. If hes actually injured you did the right thing, if hes faking it delay of game, screw it give them a penalty shot if theyre faking it. When the puck goes to the corner though idc who touches it if the guy getting the puck shot at him is down just blow the whistle...its a January game ffs lol. I would die on this hill no matter the team.. Luckily it was a wrap around and not a Tage Thompson one-timer.. Edit: Also lets be honest, theres very little incentive to fake an actual injury in the NHL. Embellishment sure, but I can't even recall a player faking an injury. If there is an example I bet that player has a history of being suspect.
@@PuckLuckUA-camfair points and I agree with how the refs should handle these situations. I’m not sure I agree that there’s no incentive to fake an injury if it stops the play. It’s the same as knocking the net off the moorings and we know that gets done fairly often …cough cough…Matt Murray. Hard to disprove an injury as well. God I hope that doesn’t become a thing, but I’ve seen enough soccer to know it’s possible.
I was at the game with my family, and everyone was pissed and angry at the refs. It was like watching a Cheifs game on ice. Refs don't care. So us winning was sweet revenge
Check the refs bank balance, he is obviously ofn the take! Just look at the first goal, the player was in the blue and stopped the goalie from getting across. Corrupt ref should be removed from the job!
“Should refs be able to make exceptions to the reviews on a challenge” No. You tell the referees what you’re challenging. They challenged for GI, it wasn’t GI. You even said it yourself. There’s no way to challenge for a missed stoppage, it’s not a mechanism of the game. And rightfully so. The referees called it by the book, what is there to even challenge?
If the ref isn't going to make the call, why are they there? They're literally just extra meat on the ice if they don't do the thing they're there to do.
I've had this issue happen before. Its filters I have setup that bug out. Normally I catch it but my headphones are on the verge of quitting so I thought it was them. After uploading I realized it was the actual audio. So I'll be buying new headphones, better headphones and the issue will be fixed moving forward. Fortunately, from what I can tell it's not terrible in the right headphone, or through speakers.
Both the players and refs are responsible for the play on the ice. They are totally inconsistent in their willingness to play and call the game according to the rules. Every single game there are multiple penalties that could have been avoided and the difference between regular season and playoff officiating is a real eyesore for the league. Why the constant fights. Fighting is against the rules.
I kinda agree with the refs on this one because there is no rule that doesn't make the goalie go off the ice for being injured if whistled to be blown dead. If the NHL had this rule then yes they should have blown it dead, they don't, so their iwn team caused the injury so why penalize the other team for something the other team did. Not like they can get a 5 on 4 for this as it was their own teammate that caused the injury.
Officiating was all around, awful in this game. Their inconsistency is ridiculous. Nobody’s talking about the first goal. Avs should have challenged. Zucker was way in the blue paint prior to the puck.
Ref was right. Too many players for some reason like to put guys into their own goalie. I never understood that. The avs wanted the play stopped because they were on their heels in tbei end
Caps/Rangers game about a week ago was fire wagon hockey. The 3rd period was insane. Every time the Caps would take a 2 goal lead, the Rangers would make it a goal. The Rangers probably ran out of juice towards the end of the game as the Caps held them off 7-4.
ist goal, player in the crease- should have been no goal. The play should have been called dead - goalie hurt, no one in control of puck. This is not exception to the rule. NHL refs are illiterate, incompetent and neglectful morons.
Bruh chill. he clearly didnt know the goalie was hurt. It's blatantly obvious. Even for blind people. you just want a scape goat to get mad at. It's pathetic.
You're 100% wrong about the play being blown dead. NHL rule 8.1 states: "When a player is injured so that he cannot continue play or go to his bench, the play shall not be stopped until the injured player’s team has secured control of the puck. If the player’s team is in control of the puck at the time of injury, play shall be stopped immediately unless his team is in a scoring position." Colorado never gained possession of the puck after Wedgewood was injured therefore no whistle and a good goal. It's amazing that someone would go so far as to do a video breakdown of this play without checking the rule book first and be completely wrong. But here we are. 🤷🏻♂️
The very next sentence in the rulebook after what you quoted: “In the case where it is obvious that a player has sustained a serious injury, the Referee and/or Linesperson may stop the play immediately.” Also, everyone knows the rule, and no one is debating that aspect of it. Literally the entire argument is that the play should have been blown dead because Wedgewood was obviously seriously injured, in accordance with this rule. So yeah, good job quoting the rulebook and still coming across as completely ignorant.
Rules say: "When a player is injured so that he cannot continue play or go to his bench, the play shall not be stopped until the injured player’s team has secured control of the puck. If the player’s team is in control of the puck at the time of injury, play shall be stopped immediately unless his team is in a scoring position." So, this was totally legal and a good goal.
You're not wrong, it's more or less a rule is only a rule if they enforce it.. and they often blow the whistle before the puck is touched. So yes, you're correct. Consistency would be nice, but they're human and this is the NHL at the end of the day lol.
Bednar talks about this in the presser afterwards. It's less about how the rule is written than it is about how it is being enforced; that it is inconsistent game-to-game and that is a problem. He also stressed that player safety is the most important thing. what if they threw it back to the blue line and thompson threw a 100 MPH slapper into wedgewood's head lying on the ice? the rule needs to be clear, consistently enforced, but most importantly, written to protect the players.
And as Bednar stated plays are stopped all the time without the team with the injured player in possession of the puck. Bednar stated the rule you cited here in his presser after the game.
The rule says the play is dead when their team (Avs) touches the puck. The coach said that too, but he said they don't usually call it that way. So really people are just upset the refs actually followed the rules this time? The play went this way because the goalie's own teammate pushed the player into the goalie. Nice video though, new mic would do you wonders :)
Two things, the defenseman pushed the other player into his own goalie and the Avs never regain possession of the puck. I love it when people that do not know the rules, feel the need to share.
Your assessment is true. Those are the rules. But explain why a whistle is blown when a player is injured in a shooting lane and they don't have possession. Just like Bednar said, you see this about once a game.
@ImalwaysFullRight I don't see that. I see shot blockers get up and struggle on one foot until they can reach the bench. I see people crawl to the bench, occasionally getting a push from a teammate. I realize player safety should be priority 1, but then you end up with soccer. Players falling down for no reason other than a whistle or a penalty. Boring. If you don't want your opponent to score, don't break your goalie by driving the opposition player into him.
@@DonKnight-qi4tuJust going to add my two cents here. Wedgewood is a goaltender, easily facing 90+ mile an hour shots every game. Had the puck instead gone up ice to a player waiting for a slapper and had hit him anywhere, it would not have been a good situation. Bednar calls this out later in the interview. I am not here to argue the fact that Kelly knocked Benson into Wedgewood, he a 100% did and is the sole cause for the injury. However, after the scoring chance went from being immediate as a result of the injury to delayed it should have been called dead for Wedgewood’s own safety. Had a slapper gone to his head this situation would have been different. I don’t care that the Sabres were allowed a bs goal. Good props to them for playing through to the whistle, that’s what they are supposed to do. The issue I take is with the ref, allowing the play to continue and putting a defenseless player in an extremely vulnerable position. Also while I get your football analogy it does not apply here, yes we see more players flopping for calls, however, in this case this was no flop Wedgewood was injured and put into a position where a potentially greater injury could have been caused. The rules are rules up until a point, the refs are allowed to make calls that don’t always go with the rules when they personally deem that the player’s safety is at risk and they do it often. Yes we see players struggle to the bench when they are injured and we also DONT. That is when the refs can and do call the play dead even when it doesn’t apply based on the word of the rules.
@@zephyr5802 If you are going to blow the whistle to protect a player injured by a teammates actions and take away a scoring chance, give the stupid defenseman a 5 minute major for intent to injure and blow the whistle. Not a Sabres fan, but why should they be punished for Colorado's play. The D-mans job is to protect the goalie not break him. How many times have you seen a player, dieing on the ice, only to miraculously heal and play the powerplay. Ovie 2018 in the playoffs comes to mind. Garbage, needs to not be a part of the game and as long as it is, play by the rules, play to the whistle, legitimate goal not bs.

Just a heads up! ;)
It was a great game to watch, but thats most Avs games 🤣
That is one of the all time non calls that I can remember in the NHL. Absolutely no excuse. Go Avalanche
This audio sounds like it was recorded by your neighbor
😂. It'll be better moving forward. That did make me laugh though lol.
I'm a seventy year old Canadian and have never, never, ever seen a referee make a wrong call...I mean I have never, never, ever whined about it!!!
The Avs , Edmonton, and Vegas are in a league of their own.
Sorry. It should NOT have been blown dead. What's to stop a goalie from doing that every time? "No goal, I was hurt, honest.." He got hurt because his player pushed someone into him. Shit happens. Oh well.
i wish i could watch this video but the sound is just insanely annoying, how do you achieve half surround sound??
Its fixed now! Lol on my new videos.
Its fixed now !! Thank you! 😃
Ref suck but I think the goalie, while probably hurt, did try to sell the call. Guy had hardly touched him yet and he dropped like a boy getting caught by his mom.
audio only on one side
oh man the audio narration is dismal. voice is panned to the left mostly but goes back and forth to the right . mic should be mono.
ALL OFFICIALS IN EVERY SPORT ARE ON THE TAKE!!!!
Love the Avs still.
perhaps the most angry i've been as an avs fan since watching the kraken eliminate us.
The Play is not dead until the Avs's touch the puck
My right ear feels left out of this video.
The ref definitely noticed the goalie down but new he was full of shit. Pretending to be hurt🤦♂️
“Should refs be able to make exceptions to the reviews on a challenge”
No. You tell the referees what you’re challenging. They challenged for GI, it wasn’t GI. You even said it yourself. There’s no way to challenge for a missed stoppage, it’s not a mechanism of the game. And rightfully so. The referees called it by the book, what is there to even challenge?
Bad reffing in hockey should be an easy fix, but you can't coerce games that way so they don't.
are you talking through a paper towel tube?
If the ref isn't going to make the call, why are they there? They're literally just extra meat on the ice if they don't do the thing they're there to do.
please record your voice in mono. Ur only coming out of my left ear and its horrible
Wasnt GI, Avs never touched the puck, and it was a leg injury. Get mad at the rules.
Read the rule book. The ref made a technically correct call. Facepalm. Blame the rule makers if you're all pouty-faced.
Refs just seem to be hot trash this year
Both the players and refs are responsible for the play on the ice.
Not bad for a first video, stick with this formula
ist goal, player in the crease- should have been no goal. The play should have been called dead - goalie hurt, no one in control of puck. This is not exception to the rule. NHL refs are illiterate, incompetent and neglectful morons.
Sabers better watch out he has a target on his back now for taking that goal and celebrating
Bruh chill. he clearly didnt know the goalie was hurt. It's blatantly obvious. Even for blind people. you just want a scape goat to get mad at. It's pathetic.
@@tohsakamineWedgewood was clearly in distress laying on his back, and Benson celebrates. Absolutely no class whatsoever.
@@lelouchvibritannia4028 benson never even looked in his direction.... absolutely delusional
@@tohsakamine Okay Sabres fan. Scoring a goal on an injured goalie and celebrating is your Stanley Cup.
Welcome to colorado public enemy #1 Benson. Enjoy your stay
dude didnt even do anything wrong lmao
I'm shocked.......SHOCKED I tell you that the officiating in the NHL SUCKS.
You're 100% wrong about the play being blown dead. NHL rule 8.1 states:
"When a player is injured so that he cannot continue play or go to his bench, the play shall not be stopped until the injured player’s team has secured control of the puck. If the player’s team is in control of the puck at the time of injury, play shall be stopped immediately unless his team is in a scoring position."
Colorado never gained possession of the puck after Wedgewood was injured therefore no whistle and a good goal.
So yeah, good job quoting the rulebook and still coming across as completely ignorant.
hit a player into your goalie and then whine and cry that wasn't called... typical complainers...
Rules say:
"When a player is injured so that he cannot continue play or go to
his bench, the play shall not be stopped until the injured player’s team
has secured control of the puck. If the player’s team is in control of the
puck at the time of injury, play shall be stopped immediately unless his
team is in a scoring position."
So, this was totally legal and a good goal.
Read the next sentence in the rulebook eh? Holy shit this is out of hand.
@@glengilbert6566 Thank you. Lol
Its fixed in my new video! My filters bugged out. 😂
Go sabres
this is diving...pretty plain to see
The Sabres player dived into the goalie, I agree.
I don’t mind he did it, but any guy under 5’5” is laughable. Sorry
Boo hoo avs benefits from this in playoffs the one that comes to mind is against the blues the year the AVS won the cup tough shit
