    Hi Dr. Kriukow, I have a question. Is it necessary to "clean up" interview transcripts before importing them to NVivo? My (structured) interview transcripts have timestamps, things like "Interviewer: Participant:" and also because it's verbatim transcription there's a lot of uh, um, you know, and sounds such as [coughs] [phone rings], etc. So, it's not really clean and straightforward like question then answer, and I wonder if it's ok to work directly from these transcriptions. I'm really afraid of making mistakes in the beginning that cannot be fixed later on, so I want to make sure I'm starting my project in NVivo correctly... >_< I'd appreciate your advice.

      No, in general there is no need to clean them up, and you can work on any kind of transcripts in NVivo. The only thing that you DON'T WANT to have (I thought about it when you said time stamps, as some people use MS Word tables for this) are TABLES. You do not want to have transcripts in large MS Word tables, as NVIVO goes a bit crazy when working on tables. So if that's the format, you want to take the text out of tables prior to moving it to NVIVO. Apart from this, no special formatting is required so do not worry !

      @@qualitativeresearcher Thank you so much for your prompt answer! That was very helpful. Fortunately my transcripts are not in tables, just plain MS docs, but I understand what you meant and that's really good to know. I appreciate the advice. By the way, I signed up for your udemy course. :)

    Is there a way to automate code for a specific word? Lets say we are looking for all instances of 'Motive' in a set. Could we use NVivo to almost CTRL+F and put these as a code? Then just look at the file/references to see which ones have this word and then code from there?

    • @qualitativeresearcher
      @qualitativeresearcher  3 роки тому +2

      yes, you can do this by using a word search query, and then code the results

    This questions may seem crazy but I need to ensure I am using my time wisely and coding accurately. Can I "pull out" the codes in the transcripts and then create the list of codes? Or do I have to create the codes by highlighting the text and then creating the codes?

    • @qualitativeresearcher
      @qualitativeresearcher  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Kristyn, the latter would be the case - you need to select what needs to be coded, there is no other way. The only other way, which I do not really recommend, is called autocoding but it is not really what the name may suggest. What autocoding does is coding full responses to separate questions. In practice, this does not help with anything though

    In open coding you said code every statement. What if it is obvious and you already have a hunch, do i have to enter everything into nvivo? Or is this done so other researchers can follow your analysis? Also i cite the codes in my findings directly as they are quite philosophical. Is that not recommended as the findings chapter shld just be a report of conclusions? Really appreciate your videos... Saved my life really.

      You generally want to code as much as possible, and tthis is also to ensure validity of your findings, as you said. On the other hand, yes of course there may be things that are 100% sure to be irrelevant, in which cases you can leave them out - however, this may, then always raise the question of "how do you know it is irrelevant, at this stage", so just for the peace of mind, and to avoid criticism, it is a safe practice to code that too.

      @@qualitativeresearcher thanks for the reply! So to clarify code everything, i guess it is a call about data sampling, like which sources I decide to focus on that are most relevant. After coding do i have to put the nvivo documents in the appendices for other researchers or is that overkill and the phd thesis is the only document they need to refer to? Pls could you make a video about careers in research after postgrad?
