Roberta and I forgot about this one. I've been digitizing old VHS tapes and found this .. plus a few other fun videos. I still don't remember filming it ... and not sure where we were when it was filmed - Ken W
I love the cut-away shot of the interviewer hearing "Fortran language", and she nods her head like she knows what in the world was just said :D Awesome interview
I wish I could have seen this interview when I was a little girl! Thanks for digitizing videos like these, Ken. So much VHS history is being lost unless it's carefully preserved. Thank you for making it available for everyone to watch!
@@colossalcave hey Ken, I was wondering if you’d found any more tapes - particularly from the later 80s or 90s of you and Roberta, or Sierra in general? Would love to see them if so
Yes. 4:48 Roberta mentions the movie The Dark Crystal ‘coming out in December’ so it must be 1982. Roberta is wearing a sundress so probably a warmer month.
I've read about that period of Sierra from the 1984 Hackers: Heroes of the computer revolution book, reviews on magazines of that time and more recently from Ken's book. Fascinating to see this in video!
To me, you two were superstars when I was a kid. If this video had been made available back then, I would have worn it out in our VHS player. What a great find! thank you for sharing this!
Thank you for making my childhood, teenage, and adult years very memorable with the games. There is something very comforting seeing the Sierra logo start up on some of my favorite adventure games. On a side note, I'm still dealing with that dumb Skate-O-Rama bug in Space Quest IV!!! Many thanks, - Jay!
Me too… I remember being in the video game store and seeing the big box for Kings Quest 2… even the box art sent my mind on an adventure… I remember looking at it and just thinking how much I couldn’t wait to play it… a fave memory
This video is awesome. It really shows how Mr. Williams is a genuinely humble man. Even when he was the king of the consumer software world, he remained down to earth. True role model!
This speaks to the aspiring game programming teen from my past... he grew up to work on the web, and lament about how cool games used to be in the Apple ][ days. 🙂
This is fantastic! 🎉 It's great to see you two at the very start of everything. It's amazing how much has changed over the years... and also how little has changed, in some ways. You two were so "adorable and innocent" back then. 😊
So glad I bought Colossal Cave off the GOG summer sale currently going on July 2024. I love old Sierra adventure games. I'm currently playing the Colonel's Bequest for the first time, and I just figured out you can pull open the mirror and cabinets to find secret rooms in the mansion.
Thanks so much for posting this Ken! It's always cool to get a glimpse of Sierra in the early days. Is it my imagination or had your voice gotten deeper over time?
Always loved Sierra and everything they did for pc gaming. My first game I learned to game with was Space Quest 3 when I was 6. Miss true adventure games.
I have no idea. It looks fairly big budget. Both Roberta and I have tried to figure it out with no luck. We don't even know where it was filmed... Someone speculated that it was Austin, but I have no idea. - Ken W

Merry Christmas to you guys Ken ❤ Man, Roberta has such a great mind for fantasy and adventure...really comes through in this clip 😎
Wow now that's an incredible background for an interview 😃
Roberta was just SO STINKING ADORABLE. 😁
She still is! - Ken Williams

"Ah, Fortran language, of course!"
"So you made this for Tran. Who's Tran?"
0:59 which is, ah, Fortran language
Nice little time capsule video. It is a neat look back.

Why do you wish you could have seen it earlier? To inspire you to make games?
A piece of video game history. Thanks!
Wow! This must be like 1982! 😮

I wish Sierra was still going and we were on Kings Quest 20

Really fun watch, correct in your predictions. So glad you're back into development / design.
Thanks for sharing Ken. Good transfer of the VHS too.
Thanks for posting this interview! Very nice quality video! Really enjoyed it!
Great vid. I have fond memories of sierra. Playing police quest on amiga in the late 80’s 😢
have you played the new Colossal Cave? It has things that will remind you of that time.

Roberta, those bangs are so perfectly horizontally cut. 😁

Really cool to hear about the Dark Crystal collaboration. Great Movie and I have never got to play the game.
"We decided to add pictures to it, so we had to invent a way to do it. And we did."
Inventing a way to display computer graphics, as you do...
Talentosa y hermosa toda su vida!
Legends.
Wow, eight years before I was born! I loved Sierra games as a child. And now.
One of the first games I ever worked on was the 25th Anniversary mobile phone edition of Frogger and it was a ton of fun to program!

Phantasmagoria is the best experience I've ever had playing a video game, Thank you

I LOVE this. Both of you have such kind warm voices.
Great interview. I remember those days! Thank you for then and the new 3D version I'm playing on my Switch.
This was fabulous!
Anyone knows where this was recorded? What a piece of history thought ❤
Oh my... early spoiler image of the urSkeks there, before the movie came out. Haha!
Ken sent me.
Does anyone know what show this is an excerpt of?

Wow, look at that backdrop.
Is it Oakhurst? Can’t imagine Oakhurst having that sort of railroad though… or bay
Near Oakhurst at bass lake. I live here so I know.
god Roberta was so adorable, how many kids did they have?
Two! DJ, and Chris. DJ has been doing the marketing for our Colossal Cave game, and Chris works for Intuit. Both turned out good!
Roberta was hott
You both made so many people happy with your creations. Thank you very much for being part of my childhood.
