Kindly make video on different fuel option by various brands is expensive fuels are worth or not like Shell normal petrol aur diesel vs V Power petrol/diesel
absolutely top tier content. I would like to understand in future a comparative analysis of turbo petrol and diesel engines from point of performance, efficiency and emission. 1.5 turbo GDI petrol and 1.5 Diesel
1) 10 year ban on old diesel cars by NGT was for old, bs2, bs3 vehicles. However a 10 year cap is being imposed even on BS4 & BS 6 vehicles ...how's that logical? 2) Honda 1.5 Dtec, easily runs 20KMPL in city, whereas Suzki 1.5 petrol hardly manages 10 KMPL. Double the amount of fuel, double the amount of forex spent, how is banning diesel saving money ? How is burning 1 litre fuel more damaging than burning 2 litres ? Particulate etc was a issue, mostly in bs2/3, reduced by almost 70-80% in bs4/6.
@7:03 100% correct. Government is dumb 😭. Firstly, government Should update all the diesel trains and government transport vehicles and then they can apply rules for the citizens of India
Diesel trains have drastically reduced since last 5 years. Railways are doing their job of 100% electrification goal well. But I doubt if it is easy to achieve less emissions in trucks.
Everyone knows Mr. GADKARI is in favor of Ethanol No one knows the real reason The reason being his direct relatives own loads of Ethanol factories His son himself has many on his name Isn't this direct conflict of interest? Consumers are mum
are you joking? Ethanol blending started way back in 2000s and its the biggest saviour of external reserves. By 2030 at 20% mandatory blending indian energy reliance on foreign soil reduces hugely. Go green.
Some Stupid Legislation & Stupid Logic is killing the Diesel Dream. Having owned & driving Diesel cars from last 20+ years, I can't imagine how would I cope without the fun & efficiency Diesel cars provide. Already this DPF & EGR thing has ruined the simplicity & longevity of diesel engines. To Top it off Manufacturers are putting in 0W-30 motor oils in the engine so that they don't last long enough.
@psg5772 The true killer of the diesel dream is the carcinogenic nature of the emissions...which even for a hardcore diesel lover is not a tradeoff....we'll have to be content with larger turbo petros which are just as punchy as diesels if not more at times
Drive the 1.5 and 2.0 ltr TSI engines and they are as close as u could get to turbo diesels. We have both kinds of cars at home and now a days, I am opting more for the 2.0 TSI drives because I simply love the noiseless feeling with the ultra quick DSG shifts at the same time. Yes, efficiency is not the same but everything else like the punch etc is almost comparable !
That Hormazd is an encyclopaedia on all things automobile was known, but his deep knowledge about different pollutants, it's effects and the technological advancements made by the industry in an effort to curb polution and offcourse comply with constantly changing regulations, was a revelation. Thank you for the master class Mr. Sorabjee. 🙏
I'm still a huge fan of diesel engines ⛽️! I own a 2010 SWIFT 1.3 Diesel, and it's still my favorite car ❤. Cheers to all the diesel enthusiasts out there, even amid the rise of gasoline and hybrid vehicles!
I also own 2010 Swift Diesel VDI now January repassing. Still runs very smooth and mileage with AC On is 22+ easily. Last week got Tata Tiago XTO Petrol, actually wanted to buy it if in diesel but since 2020 no Diesel Tiago only Altroz have option.
Tata should bring back 2.2L varicor! If Mahindra can make diesel, why can't tata? They already make good 1.5 diesel. What an engine 2.2 varicor was.. pulling 2 tons safari to 100 in just 11 seconds! With good enough refinement and mileage.
Thank you Hormazd for the insight on diesel engines and emissions. I just got my third diesel powered car in 17 years with diesels. Lovely 1.3 Ddis in the Swift and the Brezza, and now the beautifully refined and powerful 2.2mhawk in the XUV 700.
I hope Mr. Gadkari sees this sensible podcast. He is visibly biased, in favor of “Es” (Ethanol and EVs). Hybrid is definitely more agreeable future but the cost is huge so Diesel will always be first choice. This will influence pre-owned vehicle market positively.
We have to be cognisant as a vast country and its citizens that the diesel is the one of the most efficient and probably cleaner (on the highway vs a small petrol) way of traversing our country. The addition of DEFs and other Urea based nitrogen control agents makes it better than older petrol cars in the cities. In places likes NCR, we pay for road tax for 15 years while we are not allowed to drive it in our base city beyond 10 years, which is basically a legalised scam. This law needs a rethink, no questions about it.
The last blow for diesels will be when GST or Road tax is reduced for Hybrids. The biggest issue with BS6 diesel is that you need to have constant highway runs. Only city runs with BS6 diesel causes issues with DPF, as it needs extra care
If runs are only in city why even bother with diesel, Nexon EV creative 45 is costing same in OTR cost as Nexon diesel AMT creative 350km real range is enough for intra state road trips too.
Can you tell me more about what you mentioned on bs6 diesel engine requiring more drive on highways ? I have a bs6 bolero and I haven’t faced dpf issue yet . I do drive most of the days in a week
I still treasure my Hexa XTA. 400 Nm Torque, a great torque converter, sofa like seats, tank like build, 9 speakers and 2 subwoofers (I added one more under the driver's seat for thump!). Sweet dreams are made of these ❤ 1200 kms per day in case of good roads? No problems.
20:00 100% agree to that. Am driving a Kia Sonet Diesel AT for last 2 years. Drove 70k kms. Extremely happy with the performance and pure drive pleasure ❤
Diesels is all time favourite for me. Petrol can never match the torque and efficiency of diesel cars . Government say diesel make more pollution but if they compare on per km/ per liter basis diesel is a better option .
Very very informative video. One of the main reasons why Autocar is autocar as compared to other automotive channels. Keep up the great work. Cheers !!
My Toyota Crysta 2.8 litre is an absolute beast that produces amazing power on the tap and that’s amazingly gratifying especially on the highway. As Hormaz said it may not be fast but the feel of the torque delivery is very gratifying. One of the reason for me retain this model, it’s an absolute gem. Thank you for this podcast, it was truly enlightening. Love watching the podcast, pls keep them coming. Kudos!
Request you to make a series in which you compare base models of all the car. Everyone cannot afford top if the lune and reviews each channel shares is of high spec top models. As a budget buyer, we need to know which is the bear base model call in each category.
Absolutely love the diesel engines! The punch and torque I get in my ecosport’s 1.5 TDCi BS4 is so much fun! The car torque pulls even in 5th gear! This engine is definitely up there with the best diesels in India. Can’t get this kind of fun in bs6 diesels or a petrol which is why I’ll keep my eco till the end.
Buses, trucks, tractors, gensets, small portion of railways are still on diesels. Thats where the maximum pollution is, and not with cars. Govt does nothing with the above segments
This is also the reason why more and more people are going towards buying used vehicles (especially diesel ones). Brands like Spinny are thriving in these times. Nothing beats a BS4 diesel with TC gearbox.
I recently bought Kia seltos Diesel Imt. I am very happy with the refinement, the mileage, the power and the Torque. Happy with thr overall performance
I had a Swift Dzire Diesel and Innova 1st Gen. Still no car comes closer to their pick up and efficiency. I recently bought a Jimny and I so wished it was available in Diesel, would've disrupted the market.
The problem here is that bus trucks are running on diesel; the government cannot increase the price of this fuel just the way they can for petrol. The agenda is to force people to buy low-efficient petrol cars to boost gasoline sales. Until now, I never owned any petrol cars but only diesel, and the fuel economy it gave was outstanding. The turbo-petrols are not bad, but they are highly fuel-inefficient. I thought that like turbo diesel, the smaller turbo petrol engines would give similar mileage, but that's not the case in reality! You drive it with a little heavy foot, and it will give 10 kmpl mileage!!! The mileage difference between the turbo petrol and turbo diesel is on and averages 5 km/l, and the extra price we paid for petrol is 13 rupees per liter. It's killing both the way!!! Absolutely nonsense! I don't say turbo-petrols are bad, but running costs are unnecessarily high. Diesel would be my next car, for sure.
All of my cars are diesel since 2010. My Father still owning a 1.3l 2013 Swift, 1.3l 2019 breeza and 3.2l 2020 ford endeavour. The torque delievery of the diesel engine is so good that i fell in love when i started driving these cars.
Dear Hormazd, I sincerely thank you for calling out the government's ban on cars older than 10/15 years in the NCR as stupid and unintelligent. I agree with you entirely on how it is a fundamentally stupid law, that does nothing to solve the problem that it sets out to. In fact, the production of new cars (as opposed to keeping old ones running) causes more pollution, and the people in charge must either be incompetent or idiots or corrupt to have signed off on this. The move was ignorant, draconian, unintelligent, irresponsible, misleading, and absolutely disgusting. For the sake of the environment, the people, the economy, good lifestyles, common sense, and just good manners, this idiocy needs to end NOW. Again, I thank you for speaking on the topic.
A most educational video as always Two things 1. A full tank of def in Creta can give you upto 30000 km of used mostly(>80%) on highways And you don’t have to carry a def tank either…. After the low def warning , it’s still good to go for 1-1.5k km, and sealed def are available in petrol pumps/garages ; no fear of contamination either 2. The technology used in Tata reduces mileage by about 25% when compared to equivalent cars from other oems
7:10 It is a very simple logic really, if diesel is so clean, then why did the largest carmaker (at the time) have to resort to cheating in emissions tests? If diesel is so clean, low emission and efficient, they should not have needed to cheat to pass. Even if diesel is low on CO2, it is much much higher on NOx, SOx and PM. Funnily, our pucc report does not even count PM and NOx/SOx, only CO2 and CO. So on paper old diesel still looks clean but it may as well be having much higher SOx/NOx and PM. Only real time monitoring like the one in EURO 7 OBD will be able to quantify how much real world emissions are. One must also not forget that the emissions of any car is basically based on ARAI mileage figure. So if your actual mileage is lower than ARAI by some x%, then your emissions will be higher by equal % proportion too. Now even if you have DPF, filters get clogged, the only suggested solution is to drive at high rpm on highway to rid all the PM stuck in filter, if you are going to vent all that pollution out into the air anyway, whats the use of putting the filter in the first place, thats just delayed pollution which wont show up on PUCC or ARAI testing, but in day to day use will pollute more.
I still have Ciaz diesel with 1.3L multijet. I have done 1.1 lacs kms with a milage of 21km/L and 16-17km/L in city. The engine is amazing and running without any issues till now.

Mr. Hormazd literally spills the beans regarding govt policies in terms of age of vehicles. Whatever happens in Delhi NCR gets imposed on the whole country. I had to sell my 15 year old petrol i10 (ran 40000) as it had completed the so-called age. My vehicle was perfectly fine. It must be judged by the emission and not by age.
The amount of technical know how that has been distilled into this talk is amazing. And there is a balance to it which us layman can understand too. Thank you for sharing it with us, really appreciate it.
I wonder why aren’t OEM working on enabling e-turbo in petrol ICE , it will be good for both the worlds. The problem with turbo is its lag and the high RPM where it actually engages. Why not activate the turbo using a battery at lower rpm and as the engine rmp reaches the threshold , the system switches to the existing exhaust driven mode. This way you get efficiency and power
My family has 5 cars at home Diesel:530d, v40, and i20 Petrol:glanza, elevate, and recently booked hybrid hyryder. Nothing beats driving a diesel car full of torque and great mileage...sad to see it slowly losing its charm...we also owned 1.6 polo GT tdi and xuv700 dsl and i heavily miss it.
So sad, i so want diesel for my next car, but cant as you said just too much issue with it in NCR specially the dpf errors in low milage situations....
Legislations have killed diesel for me. We use our car once or twice a month. And two long family trips in a year. Our 15 year old car is still in very drivable condition. For 10 years, I'm not wasting my money on diesel car even if I my heart still desires a diesel car.
I have Sonet diesel AT and XUV 7OO D AT. Whenever i drive any turbo petrol, although good but can't feel the torque rush which is very evident with turbo diesel.
I have the 2019 Nexon Diesel Manual. I'm glad i got the right car at the right time. The turbo kick is massive fun and the go anywhere ability of the Nexon certainly is a boon! Holding on to it as long as I can.
I like Diesels because of torque and efficiency. But if u want a modern diesel, u gotta have minimum 4000km running for month with extensive highway usage.
Fortunately bought Sonet Diesel AT as petrol DCT's delivery was delayed. Loving the diesel mid range and will never move away from Diesel until no one gives that option
Indians generally do not oppose environmental regulations or restrictions on diesel vehicles; rather, we are often wary of the corporations and cartels that influence these regulations in favor of specific business interests. I am proud to own two of India’s most renowned diesel engines: the Toyota 1GD 2.8 and the Mitsubishi 4D56. These engines deliver outstanding performance, excellent fuel efficiency, and affordable maintenance, making them ideal for Indian consumers. Also Along with 1.3 Multijet, I think the Fiat 1.6 was the Nation`s Fun to Drive Diesel, if I might forgotten that. It’s worth noting that Toyota has done a remarkable job maintaining a legacy for diesel engines in India through its Fortuner models. Starting with the 1KD and 2KD engines, Toyota has consistently developed diesel engines that cater to the needs of Indian drivers. They set a standard that other manufacturers could aspire to. Diesel engines, and indeed internal combustion engines as a whole, have a place in automotive history due to their durability and long lifespan. Recognizing and valuing these qualities as part of the automotive landscape is essential.
I have driven and driven about in Mahindra ScorpioN and XUV700 petrol version, even though they are powerful engine, that engine don't have the easily available torque that instantly push the vehicle through.
Thanks for the clarification, especially the DPF, SCR and LNT. Despite being a petrolhead I would still prefer a modern diesel for heavier vehicles/SUVs
Intersting and informative talk. I have been using a 1.6 VW diesel car and its absolute brilliant. This podcast in time just as i am thinking of getting another car. This podcast surely helps.. thank u
Absolutely loving this podcast and I hope it continues for very long. Mr Hormazd Sorabjee, I am a fan of you sir. The things that you share are of almost valuable for me in the automobile industry. Thank you
The problem is that, if you want diesel, then you have lesser options. And DPF is also one concern for people who drive a lot in the city, I have a Kia Carens AT Diesel and after 2.5 years of usage, I got the DPF warning twice, both times I drove it on the highway and it filter got cleared. So, overall it is not a major concern. But, my next purchase may be a hybrid.
Excellent podcast. Could have touched future of diesel buses and trucks as well. Also, Mahindra R&D head once said, diesel is a byproduct in petroleum refinery. What would the world do with it if there are no diesel vehicles? Perhaps, the prices would drop and that would help diesel electric generators.
No adblue or dpf issue in 1.5 revotorq...altroz the only diesel hatchback, curvv, nexon only diesel car in the segment which doesn't need adblue refill.
Base 6 diesel cars have become a headache foe their owners if by chance they are not able to drive them long distance for few weeks due to DPF issues occurring in the exhaust systems.
Really sensible points in this podcast related to diesel engines. I truly belive Mr. Gadkari should study these points before taking any decision in future. Sometimes I feel Gadkariji is just broken from the reality that people can't afford cars like him. Current government is killing middle-class aspirestion by imposing taxes on each and every thing. Middle-class lost almost everything that is aspirational for it be it home, be it cars, be it gold. It is like pre-libralization era when only few rich people can afford a house, a car and other luxury in their life. Post pandemic inflation rise so rapidly that middle class has left room for savings. Just able to feed the family.
I have been driving a honda jazz diesel car since 2015, a powerfull engine, great milage north of 20 km/l and no issues whatsoever. It is sad it is discontinued now.
I am a Great fan of diesel engines. My previous two cars were diesel driven vehicles. Vista quadrajet followed by i20 diesel.. Both were very frugal on fuel with great mileage and fun to drive factor. The grunt of the diesel engine with its brute torque was always a pleasure to feel and drive. Changed over to petrol coz of too many regulations in BS6 and discountenance of low displacement diesels.

There is no legend its just made up
I love diesel ❤❤❤ best cars yaar
Once CJI said ..who will police the police ....this comment reminds
CNG-> Wait in queues for hours, Turbo petrol -> Live with 6-9 Kmpl, Diesel -> 15+ and fun to drive. Electric 🤣
Hybrid with highway mileage up to 10-15 kmpl & city it will be an advantage of hybrid
charge overnight beat everyone in acceleration

Long live diesel enthusiasts
Diesel is the heart of SUV, I am using 2018 Honda WRV diesel, it's fabulous fun to drive yet fuel efficient.😊
And Honda used to be a company which did not believe in Diesel engines once upon a time.
WRV is the last thing you think about when you say SUV 😂
WRV is an SUV 😂😂😂 ?
What's your experience with a honda diesel. Service? N e notable breakdowns? What fuel efficiencies did yo get
Wrv suv 😂😂

Actually he wants a sustainable Indian solution from people like us to solve the foreign crude oil imports to save our financial reserves✅

That's true. I am experiencing this first hand. I did not take my car on highway for 4 months and car started showing alert of an exhaust problem.
Yes buying diesel car is still better pick we have recently Kia Sonet 1.5 U2 CRDi GTX+ diesel automatic it’s a gem 💎 best engine & gear box combo
Whats the on road price you paid to Kia Sonet 1.5 U2 CRDi GTX + diesel
What’s the fuel efficiency you are attaining in city and highways

U forgot to mention a Steering like of a Tractor's 😂 !
Freestyle diesel bs-4..
In city, 22 -24 kmpl.
In city? Unbelievable...
20:00 100% agree to that. Am driving a Kia Sonet Diesel AT for last 2 years. Drove 70k kms. Extremely happy with the performance and pure drive pleasure ❤
I think as long as there are big transport vehicles, farm tractors running on diesel we need not worry about diesel ban.
Yeah but they can ban private vehicles except goverment & transport ones
Legislation could be targeted towards cars and not other diesel consumers.
Theres a reason why this guy is the best when it comes to cars. He lives upto the name every single time he comes up with a podcast.

@autocarindia1 Jeep being a diesel only brand really needed to be mentioned in such an informative podcast.
They use the same Fiat 2.0 multijet which was already discussed.
Jeep sales are minute so they're not a relevant player in the market.

There is no one like Hormazd Sorabjee who is an encyclopaedia of automobiles and provides detailed information of every topic he speaks👏👏
Proud owner of ford ecosport 1.5 tdci. Diesel is here to stay till 2050.
one of the most efficient mid size diesel engines in our time...
Dear mr Hormazd and mr. Ketan, thank you for another wonderful podcast. Best wishes always.
I❤diesel car, because nothing can be replaced by diesel 💪🏼
Only Jeep in India stopped Petrol and giving only diesel engine.😅
And I hope they soon rollout diesel, Wrangler
SUV without diesel is not an SUV ....Kudos to all Manufacturers which have continued with Diesel till regulations permit.
We had so many companies. Daewoo, Opel, Mitsubishi, FIAT, HM, along with Maruti, Tata and Mahindra. Now we have limited choice
Great content. Now I will go back to driving my Honda Amaze diesel.
All of my cars are diesel since 2010. My Father still owning a 1.3l 2013 Swift, 1.3l 2019 breeza and 3.2l 2020 ford endeavour. The torque delievery of the diesel engine is so good that i fell in love when i started driving these cars.

TDCi ❤.
Real miss !
A most educational video as always
Two things
1. A full tank of def in Creta can give you upto 30000 km of used mostly(>80%) on highways
And you don’t have to carry a def tank either…. After the low def warning , it’s still good to go for 1-1.5k km, and sealed def are available in petrol pumps/garages ; no fear of contamination either
2. The technology used in Tata reduces mileage by about 25% when compared to equivalent cars from other oems

It is a very simple logic really, if diesel is so clean, then why did the largest carmaker (at the time) have to resort to cheating in emissions tests?
What a lovely podcast, i think first podcast without any scoop😂. Will surely listen in next one
Diesel paired with manual transmission is my favourite combination. However due to stupid legislations and bad politics, both are dying.
What does manual gearbox has to do with politics?
Very important, useful podcast on diesel vehicles. Hopefully it continues to last for a longer time..
I will not hesitate to buy new diseal vehicle
I still have Ciaz diesel with 1.3L multijet. I have done 1.1 lacs kms with a milage of 21km/L and 16-17km/L in city. The engine is amazing and running without any issues till now.
Driving a diesel CAPTUR Pune-Delhi every 3 months....the car happily sits munching miles.
Tank Range- 1100kms
Proud owner of a 2017 Etios platinum diesel car

Excellent podcast. Thank you for a clean and crisp explanation on the DEF technology and the pros and cons.
Audi 48V mild hybrid have electric turbocharger, but on TSI not TDI
Expensive tech. It's available in some expensive cars. Not viable for mass market.
My family has 5 cars at home
Diesel:530d, v40, and i20
Petrol:glanza, elevate, and recently booked hybrid hyryder.
Nothing beats driving a diesel car full of torque and great mileage...sad to see it slowly losing its charm...we also owned 1.6 polo GT tdi and xuv700 dsl and i heavily miss it.
Up to compact suv segment diesel is not necessary. But anything above that diesel in necessary, especially for 7 seater vehicle.
Whether the pollution caused by diesel cars would be greater than the war tanks and bombs prevalent now?
Car on a road stays there for 15 years on an average and runs daily. Would you say the same for a bomb or a tank? Let’s compare apples to apples mate.
Two wrongs don't make something right !
Should we start sending diesel cars to fight wars then? 😅
Hormazd Sorabjee , covering physics ,chemistry, history and economy of cars. 😊
Always insightful
Right from childhood I was crazy for autocar magazine. Subscribing this channel after this podcast. Lots of info
Your running deserves petrol
I have Sonet diesel AT and XUV 7OO D AT. Whenever i drive any turbo petrol, although good but can't feel the torque rush which is very evident with turbo diesel.
I felt that rush in 3.2L endeavour absolute beast❤
How much sonet diesle automatic costed you
After watching this, Planning to take my seltos diesel manual for a weekly DPF regen on the road.
Car companies going to notice diesel car sales go up by another 10% after this podcast! 😂 Hormaz’s words are like the gospel! Very reassuring!
Since Nexon use SCR, does it face DPF clog issue? Can we drive it similar to BS4?
Bow my head to Hormzad ji .....you are an ocean of knowledge.....I have been giving wrong advice to.many about diesel engine....opened my eyes
Absolutely "Diesel is a Diesel"
I drive E Class 220 CDI
Altis D4D
Duster 1.5 Dci
Liva D4D.
Absolutely Great.
Everyone cannot travel in a Toyota Mirai like Honourable Minister Mr. Nitin Gadkari.
I have the 2019 Nexon Diesel Manual. I'm glad i got the right car at the right time. The turbo kick is massive fun and the go anywhere ability of the Nexon certainly is a boon! Holding on to it as long as I can.
one of the crisp discussion on diesels. Hats off to the team
Same bro I also have a sonet htx diesel automatic 2024 facelift, which variant is yours?
Amazing Podcast ...Informative & very relevant topic..thx team Autocar India
Is Toyota 2.4 ltr diesel engine is finely refined , it is wise enough to buy crysta diesel in 2025? Pl reply
Yes.. prices will be less in December
Intersting and informative talk. I have been using a 1.6 VW diesel car and its absolute brilliant. This podcast in time just as i am thinking of getting another car. This podcast surely helps.. thank u
A fantastic and knowledge giving podcast. Hormazd explained the diesel technologies like a Professor.
Great video. Very informative and educative .. Liked breaking down the diesel sales over the years and explaining new diesel technologies. 👏
Absolutely loving this podcast and I hope it continues for very long. Mr Hormazd Sorabjee, I am a fan of you sir. The things that you share are of almost valuable for me in the automobile industry. Thank you
Ford Ecosport Diesel BS 4 is an engine to be discussed. Exceptional masterpiece that will never be witnessed again
Most awaited Podcast !!❤
No adblue or dpf issue in 1.5 revotorq...altroz the only diesel hatchback, curvv, nexon only diesel car in the segment which doesn't need adblue refill.
Diesel always have the better torque, the sales dropped because of non availability only. still many love the punch of diesel powertrain
Base 6 diesel cars have become a headache foe their owners if by chance they are not able to drive them long distance for few weeks due to DPF issues occurring in the exhaust systems.
I have bought creta diesel ....fun to drive and fuel efficient
Which diesel suv do you recommend in the budget of around 20 lakhs ??
