Instead of responding with, "OMG I can't believe you haven't read *insert book here*, how have you not read *insert book here*?!" when discovering someone hasn't read a classic, I've learned that the best way to reply is, "What a treat you have waiting for you!" Hooray to destroying condescension and discouragement in the book community! (:

So many favourite classics: The Lord of the Rings, The Count of Monte Cristo, Jane Eyre, and Macbeth just off the top of my head. You should consider reading 1984 if you haven't already, it's quite ... shocking I guess. If you're lloking for a good way to motivate yourself to read classics, I often pick some that my firends have read or that they've/I've been in plays of etc. so that we can motivate and encourage eachother.

    • @ilmianafirmantika8079

Meghan Robertshaw well, the definition of 'classic' has been hotly debated, but basically classic is the literature of any language in a period notable for the excellence and enduring quality of its writers' works (definition by Britannica.com).
So, you can say that classic is a 'long lasting works'. It is works that still well-recieved and read by so many people even centuries have passed since the books were first published. Basically any book of any genre could belong to classic. There is like, romance classic such as Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, tragedy classic such as those by Shakespeare, and even fantasy classic like Tolkien's Lord of The Ring and Lewis' Narnia.
I hope I got my point across, I am sorry that it is long and rambly😅

I think the reason classics are classics is not just solid storylines (sometimes optional) and storytelling, but those new perspectives and life lessons that you learn, who you become as you read and reread them. This can make them a little slower, but I feel it is very worth it.

I recently took the leap into classic literature and I'm loving it! It's definitely a little daunting because the denseness of many classic author's writing style, but the stories are thought provoking and well worth it. My favorites so far have been The Great Gatsby, Animal Farm, 1984, The House on Mango Street, and Murder on the Orient Express. I've read a few others but they didn't quite have the same impact as these. I also highly recommend Edgar Allen Poe stories -- The Cask of Amontillado is my personal favorite!

I started rereading the Narnia books last month and I agree, I would rather go there than just reading about it! I'm reading them in chronological order, so I started with The Magician's Nephew and I'm at The Silver Chair now. I really recommend reading the rest of the series as well if you haven't. They're really good and super quick reads, too.

I read The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe earlier this year. It’s a cute and quick read, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. ✨

Finally! You have a great selection! No one should target you because you don't read many classics. But I'm glad you're getting into them!

One of my reading goals for this year was to read one classic a month throughout the year. I'm also planning on reading The Picture of Dorian Gray in July.

I see reading as a freedom of choice including what genre you like to read as long as it makes you happy.
    Nice selection.

From one bibliophile to another welcome to the wonderful world of classics. I've been a lover of books and literature all my life but it's only been in the last two or three years that I've started reading some of the classics. And in that time I've managed to get through quite a few. Some titles I suggest you try are Moby Dick, Lord Of The Flies, The Catcher In The Rye, Frankenstein, Dracula and Steppenwolf. I could name many more but that should give you a good start.

The Picture of Dorian Gray is my all time favourite book! The writing is beautifully haunting and watching Dorian's story unfold is so fascinating. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

With The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe, my 1st grade teacher used to read a chapter or two to us at the end of every day for fun. The problem was that when she was in the middle of the chapter, the bus riders ( a group which I was apart of )would have to leave so we wouldnt miss our ride. This meant that while the other kids were listening to the rest of the chapter, the bus riders had to get to the bus and werent able to hear the rest of the story. My teacher knew that the bus riders had to leave and didnt even pause the story so we could hear the rest of it, which we wouldve really appreciated. That meant that everyone else got to listen to the story while the bus riders mostly had to sit in the back whispering to each other so wouldnt spoil the story for ourselves. Eveyone else in the morning before school started would talk about the book, the charcters, and how the plot was developing, and the bus riders were just like "I dont know man I guess there3s some lion and a witch in a closet or dresser or whatever. " It made us sound disinterested but we really did want to know what was going on.

Yay classics! They can be hard to get through, but a lot of times they’re worth it! May I suggest listening to them I instead of reading them? I found that audiobooks can be really helpful if you have a hard time focusing on classic books.
Also, my favorite is The Three Musketeers.

At the beginning of every year I map out my reading so I can better tackle my TBR and this year I've dedicated my entire August to reading classics. I'm hoping to get to at least 6-7.

The Picture of Dorian Gray is wonderful, and I hope you enjoy it! I'm reading Moby Dick right now and really enjoying it. The use of language is brilliant, and I would suggest reading one chapter to see if it grabs you.
A Separate Peace is one I had to read in school. I don't have strong memories of it, but at least I don't have negative memories of reading it.

Oh! If you like Franny and Zooey (or even if you don’t) Salinger has a collection of short stories called 9 Stories and it’s incredible! Such an easy read too!

YAY classics!! I'm so excited for you! I haven't read any of the classics your reading, however like you said the Picture of Dorian Gray has been shouting at me to read it! I'm currently reading The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, its really good but pretty gross. My favorite classic is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, the perfect mixture of horror and romance. Happy Reading!

I read A Separate Piece for school this year and it was interesting, while it's not the most compelling plot, the characters are interesting and no matter there's a lot you don't find out until the end.
Ive also read PoDG and did enjoy it too, though it's not a favorite of mine.
My favorite classics are: Pride and Prejudice, The time machine by HG Wells and I'm currently reading the Great Gatsby and love it!

First of all, YES for kindness ❤️ Second, I’ve been wanting to read The Picture of Dorian Grey lately too! I’ve been trying to get more into classics as well and I’ve found that I tend to love children’s classics most of all. I read Anne of Green Gables in October and it’s now one of my all time favorites! I also actually liked A Separate Peace. I read it in high school and I had the best English teacher so I think that added to the experience! Ahhh and I looooove Franny and Zooey!!! Enjoy!!

We have a staff summer reading program at work, and one of the challenges is to read a book that was originally published in another language. I’m using that as an excuse to read The Count Of Monte Cristo, which I’m pretty excited about. 😁
