Crazy Desires of a Murderer - a sleazy giallo with castle/mansion settings that’s on Shudder. I’ll know what I’ll be doing tonight. Thanks Katie. Hope you have a Merry Christmas.

Cool to see you got a chance to watch some more Giallos. I just watched Nothing Underneath recently on Tubi and liked it. Now I’m going to have to watch Too Beautiful To Die next. Autopsy is one I really liked as well. Delirium and Four Flies are both good. I thought I was the only one who liked French Sex Murders I guess not. Killer Nun is also on my to watch list. Take care and can’t wait till your next video.

Happy holidays Katie! I too like Four Flies more than Deep Red, its one of my favourite Argento films, so its nice to see it get some appreciation here. Stendhal is very well made, but the content is too uncomfortable for me to watch that often. The opening art gallery sequence is brilliantly done though.

Happy Holidays to all in our sad coven of geeks, freaks, misfits, dip shits, and lifelong victims of nerd shame (this is the intro given at all Weird Wednesday screenings at the Joy Cinema in Oregon). Good review, you are always so nice, but you came down bravely on the Stendhal Syndrome. I saw that movie at least ten years ago and remember not liking it. I do not think it was even a Giallo. A topic you should cover is what Giallo need to be remade.

    Top favorites:
Red Rings of Fear, I just recently rewatched it on Veoh. Last time I rewatched it in Italian with no subs on UA-cam but that video is gone now. When I first watched it, it was a dubbed version on UA-cam.
The Murder Clinic, loved the gothic setting and ending reveal. Seen it 3 times already.
French Sex Murders, I honestly don't get the hate. Loved that triple death scene. Has one of my queens Rosalba Neri.
Four Flies on Grey Velvet, one of Argento's best gialli, but not better than Deep Red.
The Sweet Body of Deborah, at first I was bored with it. Jean Sorel is too average looking for me. I didn't got into it until George Hilton appeared. Loved the ending and her outfits were crazy.
    Worth the hype:
A Dragonfly for Each Corpse, I've seen it twice already. Loved the main couple. The plot is like Seven Blood stained Orchids.
Delirium, I would like it more but the main lady was boring and kinda stuck up. Edwige Fenech would've made it a top favorite for sure.
Too Beautiful to Die and Nothing Underneath, love how these two kinda go together and there's a 3rd one that I hope to see added to Tubi or Shudder. It's kind of like the School Girls in Peril trilogy.
    Solid Installment:
A White Dress for Mariale, I loved the castle setting and it was weird but Ivan Rassimov made it better.
Nine Guests for a Crime, loved the setting and it reminded me of Ten Little Indians. I didn't like the ending.
The Killer is one of 13, another one that reminded me of Ten Little Indians.
    Lackluster:
Stendal Syndrome, I don't remember it much, just that it was confusing and kinda boring. Assault does not bother me. Not sure why it's such an issue. We are watching movies of people getting brutally murdered.
Autopsy, I think this needs a rewatch because I can't remember why I dislike it. I watched it at the very beginning of my giallo journey.
    Total Flop:
The Flower with the Petals of Steel, just boring and stupid with unlikeable characters.

      @KatieoftheNight  10 місяців тому

wow this is so great!! thanks for taking the time to do this.
Yeah, George Hilton definitely brings more interest to Sweet Body of Deborah!
Regarding Delirium - I never thought about putting Edwige in Serena's place but I bet that would have been wonderful as well!
What's the other film that goes well with Nothing Underneath/Too Beautiful?

Sorry for the late reply. I can't remember the name but if you go to your Letterboxd stats, it should be in the Collections section. Just click on almost complete(or incomplete). I think it's from the same guy who did Nothing Underneath. 🙂

    @rebusdan 10 місяців тому

hmmm🤔 Stendhal Syndrome is that actually a Giallo? I believed it to be more of a psychological thriller, hoped you didn't put it on the flop list only because of the uncomfortable scenes. i don't like these ones either but as a whole i thought the movie was pretty solid.. Nice job on all you ranking vids, you actually watched post 2000 gialli? Sleepless (Argento) is a pretty good one.

You really have seen lots of gialli. It must have been really hard for you to watch the ones that are the worst of the worst. Some people say that all giallo films were trash.
As a German I know some films that were published in Germany as Edgar Wallace films and some of them are actually gialli you might not know. The last two were released here as part of the series in shorter versions.
"What Have You Done to Solange?" and "Seven Blood-Stained Orchids". In "Solange" there are some German actors in it. Joachim Fuchsberger as police officer for example. Giallo films also got their inspiration from those Edgar Wallace Films particularly.
There was another series during that time (1959-1972) called "Bryan Edgar Wallace" series. The infamous film "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage" was the eight installment out of eleven in total but the last films just as the mentioned one are not based on works by Wallace's son Bryan Edgar.
Here are some of these films I hope you do not know yet:
The Monk with the Whip, also known as The College Girl Murders
    The Strangler of Blackwood Castle
    Angels of Terror
    The Trygon Factor
The Man With The Glass Eye
Do not be surprised If you think these films are cringe or kind of that.
I do not know if giallo ist written by a big letter in the beginning. In the German language all nouns are written by big letters in the beginning which is really strange for all the others who learn German. Sometimes I am proud to be German.

Was glad Autopsy got into Top tier.
Four flies on Grey velvet, easily one of my all time favorite Argento movies. Easily top favorite.
"And we get a lot of 'brown' 70's." Hell ya, we do. I love it.
Did not like Rings of fear. I thought it was boring and it literally STEALING the soundtrack to Black Christmas angered and annoyed me. It's not even nice to look at.
Boring, average, plain as hell. Granted, I watched it only once and that was back in like 2013, maybe 2014 but I was very disappointed and angry at the fact that it ripped off the Black Christmas soundtrack. I'd put it as lackluster.
Nothing underneath "Why is nobody talking about this movie?" Because it's a pretty standard giallo/slasher. Now, I actually LOVE the ending. One of the best endings. I love the 80's vibe, especially the ending where the killer is wearing Jane Fonda sweat pants. I love the drill. I love the slow motion scene. The ending is awesome. I love it...that said, the rest of the film is a pretty standard giallo mystery. But the style is fun, I like the giant scissors, etc. So I would rate it as Solid installment.
I really like A White Dress for Mariale and Nine guests for a crime. I would of put them as "worth the hype."
TFSMs. Had no idea a lot of people hated this movie. It's a decent movie. Nothing special. I've only seen it once way back in 2014.
The things I remember about it are how average it was, and the directing and editing specially the replaying the same sequence again and again and again in a row. Just average. I'd put it in Lackluster.
Love and death in the garden of the gods.
A decent installment. I kind of liked how unique it was in terms of a giallo movie.
instead of the "jet setting" attractive 30 something you always see in giallo, the main character was an old man. Even if most of the film does feature jet setting attractive 30 somethings, lol.
overall, a decent watch. I liked some of the directing.
The stendal syndrome. Easily total flop for me. Now some fans would say "Your just mad that it's Argento doing something totally different." .....yes and no. It's boring as hell. I've watched it twice and thought "That's it?! It barely started!!!" Ya, by the end of the film I am going "That's it?! That's the end of the movie?" it just feels so abrupt, boring, hollow, and unearned.
"But if you like terrible assault movies, this one's for you." I do like/love "Terrible assault movies" Mother's day, Ms.45, Savage streets, Class of 1984, Schoolgirls in chains, Cannibal holocaust, etc and I couldn't disagree more. I hate this film not because of the "terrible assault" in the movie, but because it's boring, the plot and characters suck. Seems to go no where, it's Dario Argento NOT being Dario Argento; missing the charm of his previous films, and it always feels like it just abruptly ends and the film barely started.
I watched Eyeball, What have they done to your daughters, Blood and Black lace, The blood stained butterfly, Body puzzle, and Five dolls for the august moon this year.
All of which I've seen before except for Bloodstained butterfly and Body puzzle. Which were just decent. I really liked What have they done to your daughters? I always prefered What have they done to Solange? And thought Daughters are a fairly good giallo, but each time I watch it it gets better and better. The worse one I watched was Blood and Black lace. I've seen it at least 3 other times. Last time I actually really liked it. This time I really hated it,lol. I thought it was boring as hell. Pure style over substance and boring as hell characters that I couldn't give a f**k less about. They aren't even characters, they are props and I will always defend Five dolls for an August moon as a better movie. Wasn't as good as the last time I watched it, but still pretty damn good. I like the 60's vibe. The song at the end is awesome. Good overall soundtrack. I like the beach. Overall a pretty good giallo movie. I've watched it at least 3, maybe 4 times now.
For next year, I'm gonna rewatch Sex of the witch. Haven't seen that one in a long while.
I'm also gonna give Crimes of the black cat a rewatch.

Speaking of assault movies, there's a British movie starring Suzy Kendall simply called Assault (1971) or titled In The Devil's Garden in the US. Uncomfortable theme of young school girl murders but it's quite a good mystery film and kind of like a British giallo.
