DO NOT USE 550 CORD AS A TOURNIQUET. CLS class we are taught that it is not wide enough, and will cut the skin before being able to distribute enough pressure to cut off blood flow. you will make a new injury. if you put cardboard or a magazine of something under it that can spread out the pressure 1-2", then you can use the 550 to apply the pressure, but NOT BY ITSELF.
I don't care about redundant uses. I don't care about mislabeling of vehicles. What impresses me about this video is how functional this family is. Teenagers (I'm assuming) that WANT to be involved in a video with THEIR DAD? Unheard of. Keep up the good work--meanwhile I'm surrounding my whole house with zombie paracord tripwire.
Thanks for the encouragement my friend. My son who you see in several shots of this video goes to all of our classes with me. I thoroughly enjoy spending time with him and am blessed that he enjoys spending time with me as well.
Seriously this comment and that this guys family will help out. Yeah... So many of the people I know my age have nothing to do with their families until they need some....
I am a former combat medic and CLS Instructor. Using 550 cord with something underneath to spread the pressure out is too unstable and would likely fail. A shirt, crevats, or any cloth and something that you can use to twist and tighten would be a proper improvised tourniquet.
I am a mom just sitting at home having fun making paracord bracelets and cruising through youtube. I especially like seeing the dynamics and humor with you and your kids and family. You seem like a wonderful parent and a great family! I wish that every kid could grow up with an awesome dad and mom like your family. Congrats!
+Brian Patronie Thanks for watching Brian! I am blessed that my family loves the outdoors :). Also, I'm Craig, the guy in most of the Dan's Depot videos. I suppose the very important reason for mentioning a few carry straps is completely lost on you huh?. Regarding the repeats...I mentioned fishing line twice that was it.
DansDepot The very important reason for mentioning a few carry straps is so you can reach the magic 101 number. But as you say in the beginning: other videos mention 10 or so uses. So even if you made a video with "57 uses for paracord", it would still be impressive.
Cristi Neagu In essence what I was attempting to get across to the viewer is that you should take the relatively cheap and otherwise useless straps and cords that carry your gear and replace them with paracord. In that manner you actually have more useful cordage with you even if all you are carrying is a GPS for example. With that said, everyone that criticizes for me not having 101 uses, never takes the time to actually count the number in this video (who would, all of have better things to do). But since I continue to get criticized for it...I would like to point out that there are more than 101 in this video...:) Which means even if you remove fishing line which I did twice and the carry straps there are still more than 101. LOL...either way, I hope you found something in it useful besides an opportunity to call me out on fishing line twice and several carry straps.
DansDepot It is a useful video, of course. It's just that it would have been fairer to say: "No. 1. Straps for compass, knife, GPS..." than to say "No.1 strap for compass No.2 strap for a knife...". That's the point.
Man I was searching for some paracord uses but I watched all the video to enjoy your intimate and friendly attitude and happy family picture. You guys are awesome !
Amazing video! I appreciate your dedication and explanation about the paracord. And what I liked the best is your happy and functional family! Also your sense of humor is great. Good luck to you guys!
I agree.. It's wasn't really 101 uses of a paracord bracelet, but it was a well designed video with a good sense of humor & some of the ideas were things I hadn't thought of. Some of the ideas were for more cord than what comes in a "survival bracelet", but like you said, it's a good idea to buy a hundred feet or so & include it in your backpack. Thanks for the fun video. Ya'll have a good sense of humor.
I have to admit I didn't think this video was gonna be to amazing, but you my friend have done a great job of following the way of a ninjitsu warrior,so great job and namaste my friend
Thanks Dave....I had fun doing this one....that part in particular was pretty funny and serious at the same time. Thanks for watching....we hope you subscribe... Craig
Thanks! I do love my family, and enjoy spending time with them...I bet your are a wonderful mom yourself...gotta be if you are making paracord bracelets...:) - Craig
THANK YOU for making the video 101 paracord uses. It was very informative. I like your family's since of togetherness and witt ! Here's something you can add to your list. Cut a 3' piece of paracord and tie the ends using an Improved Blood Knot. You can put the knot out to the side and then tie a figure 8 knot close to the end of the pulled loop forming a pocket for your carabiner. (never have the Blood-Knot at the end. There are many uses for this set-up. Pass the lanyard around a limb, before you cut it off a tree and snap the carabiner to a rope tied to your chipper and when the limb gets sawed off, it zip-lines to the chipper...no dragging. You can pass it around a tree and back thru itself and use the carabiner as a quick disconnect for a ridge line, or to hang your pack from a tree. You can also use it as a Prussic for rescue (You need 3. One for each foot and one for your chest. You might ought to braid 3 pieces of paracord together for these rescue rope climbers. I wouldn't trust my weight to one piece by itself) ! Cut a 12" piece of paracord and burn the ends. Wrap your spears and gigs till you have 6 wraps to go, and double tge 12" piece and lay it on your wrappings. Continue to wrap over it till you only have 2" left. Stick that tail thru the loop and pull the loop tails, QUICKLY, while holding pressure on the tag-line end, with your thumb. Cut off the excess. Save the foot long piece for future wrapping. This works much better than the standard bushcraft over-wrap and pull method. Hope you enjoy-joy these. Bill, from Tn. 🇺🇸
thank you I REALLY HAVE heard people say oh there are so many uses for it but only tell me about 3 or 4 . And you Sir out performed them all. thanks again.
There is another first aid use for the inner strands which I didn't notice here. If you take a thread, pop it through a needle, lance a blister with the needle (in one side, out the other; leaving two holes) leaving the thread within the blister. You can then plaster (band aid?) the area, leaving the string ends hanging out. They wick away moisture from the blister as it arrives. This isn't a method I'd personally advise from experience but a lot of friends swear by it!
Thanks man, I wanted to make this both fun and educational...glad you liked it...I actually did not notice that the can had fallen off until the editing had been done...I had a pretty good laugh with that too. The tree branch was particularly funny too!
To be fair strapping is an extremely valuable use of paracord, so it makes sense to repeat just to show that you can basically replace any carrying device with paracord :)
Ricky Lewis Do the math buddy 1 strand= 550ib (Paracord is called 550 for a reason). Now weave several strands (upto weight of the vehicle so it can take the strain), you've got yourself an emergency tow rope for a vehicle in a bog. Bonus is it's rot proof, so you can leave it in the back of your ute ... or pick-up truck as you guys like to call a utility vehicle.
Thanks for understanding the simplicity of its use as a carrying strap...this seems to be lost on the trolls and others who cannot see the "forest for the trees". - Craig
This military vet and law enforcement woman loves your videos. Yes, women love fishing and the great outdoors just as much as men. My son has been fishing and hunting at a young age because we are from Michigan.
If there were more people out there taking care of their family and trying to help others with something as simple as paracord this world would be heading in a whole different direction. Really enjoyed the video. Thanks!
I like the cheerfulness of this video. You are non trying to look badass like many survival bros, and it makes it more enjoyable to watch. Thumbs up for your family too.
A NET!!! For containers like back our shoulder-slung containers you can use the full paracord strand; for smaller, more tightly woven nets for fishing, you can break down the paracord and use the internal strands. But dude - a net must be in that list. Unbelievably versatile, made in all sizes for all manner of uses. Big oversight. Also great vid - informative and entertaining. btw, cute family; you must be doing something right, dad :)
Just a note for people unfamiliar with load ratings on cord and rope. 550 is the Average or minimum breaking strength. If using anything for life support, you should weigh less than 1/10 of the average breaking strength. 550/10=55. It may work once, emphasis on may, but the cord will then be stressed and break even easier. This is the same for heavy towing or hoisting applications. Find rope that is rated at least ten times the weight it will be holding and inspect it regularly. There is always an equal and opposite action to every action. Hoisting and tying off to an anchor point will double the weight stress on the rope.
In order to have paracord with you, you need to have different ways of carrying it without it taking up space in your BOB. The idea is that you don't need to keep it like that. Should something happen and you need the paracord it can then be undone and used for other tasks.
Craig Burr thanks Craig, you sir actually understood what was going on here. I appreciate you commenting here. Most of these other folks think it was all about just numbers..I guess I should have explicitly said on camera what you just said. I was wrong in that I thought that was obvvious and glad you are one of the few to have known this was a method for carrying cordage.

Ok I've got 3. Tie an antenna down. A key keeper. And a watch band loop. We had to tie antennas down to keep em from hitting overpasses when the vehicle was loaded on a flat bed. As a key keeper I use it on a carabiner and clip the carabiner to my pocket, the 550 cord keeps the key from working its way outside of the pocket and possibly falling off, actually happened. Wire works better though when bound down under tension and keeps the key ring below the jaws, zero chance of loosing your keys unless its worked unclipped. and lastly, my watch band loop broke. Instead of fiddling with leather or glues and resins I just tied some on there in a neat design.

Thank you for this this video!!! Oh man, I had a long day, this is just what I needed! I am still giggling! Seriously though, thanks for the video! I'm guessing that took a LOT of time to put together: It is fantastic. I was actually searching for some paracord tying/braiding techniques and I found this (very glad I did!) You have a new subscriber. Silly as it was I still got learn-ed, too!
That is great to hear! It did take a while to put together, but we all had fun filming it. My family and outdoor crew were willing to be silly in order to get every thing done. Thanks for taking to time to watch and comment! We're glad to have you join us! ~Craig
I just watched a show on the weather channel in which the guide used the inner strings to make a net for fishing. Between the para cord and some sticks fashioned into a racquet style holder, he channeled a stream between some rocks, and placed the net in the mouth. Coughs a lot of leaves, and a couple of fish!
# 102..if you find yourself unexpectedly kidnapped and bound by zip ties/flex cuffs you can take the paracord you're using as shoes strings and it will saw through the zip tie material like a knife. Great video, I learned some new uses for 550 cord.. new subscriber :-)
+The Griffin Benchmark Thanks for your support here at Dan's Depot! I use a Canon XA10. If you like this video check out my personal channel as well..ua-cam.com/users/naturereliance. Thanks again!~Craig, Nature Reliance School
Hello: I found your video most useful. I've learned & committed to memory everything you've shown. However, every UA-cam paracord tutorial fails to show - how to tie knots. I found Grogs Animation Knots online to be beyond fantastic at the right knot for the right purpose. Kind Regards. Robbie from England UK.
Thanks for all your support and views! I will have to check that out. I have been spending most of my time on my personal channel, ua-cam.com/users/naturereliance. I have several knot videos on that channel, see if this one explains things a little better, ua-cam.com/video/ABIRlz-qxSI/v-deo.html. ~Craig
Hilarious and at the same time exactly what I was looking for 101 ways to use a paracord... I don't know why people are saying not to use it as a tourniquet, if it's all we have at the time it's exactly what we need. Something is better than nothing until you get medical treatment. Either way thank you and your family for this video.
Those were some good ideas to get people's imagination working. Here's a few more quite practical uses in a survival situation: you can use as a belt (especially if not proficient at acquiring food...lol), you can make a gill net for fishing or large net for catching game (works especially well for birds), make a gun sling, suspend a needle as a makeshift compass (inner strand)
You said zipper pull twice and tied down a log and jacket to the top of the same bag but I like the presentation. You may do another and add paracord protective sleeve for headphones (remove the guts and replace with head phone wire), replacement watch band, and it can be woven into a hammock. I have also used it as a bow string for archery (re-curve with 80lbs pull) and a bow string with spindle for fire starting.
Instructive and fun ! Maybe you could spend some times with skippers and fishermen to upgrade your knots and ligatures, your knowlegde and their one would be terrific ! Thanks 4 all
Yes you are correct, we had a blast...and I hope you take the time to check out the channel...We try to teach, good techniques and have fun doing it...We also know how to be serious when we need to be as well :)
This is a good informative video. It has a tongue in cheek style. The part where he tries to suspend his pack, and end up gathering firewood, was funny but at the same time showed the need to adapt to any situation.
A long lanyard to retrieve the knife you just threw (alternate fishing method too as well as repelling zombies)...serious martial art skills, to make nunchucks. To pad a makiwara board, or bind your hands for Thai kickboxing, embedding them with glass for the more serious fights (saw it in a Van Damme movie). Make fingerless gloves for repelling. Make a webbed seat for a zip line or Tyrolean traverse. Make a Christmas Wreath for the front door or over the fire place or both, great gift idea.
Never use 550 cord or similarly small diameter cordage as a tourniquet. It's too small to effectively stop blood loss without causing a new injury. Even if it were to stop blood flow without causing another injury, it would be hard to cut off safely.
A Cat tourniquet or Rat would be ideal but paracord is better than bleeding out. Wrapping a few times rather than just once can help with the surface area/cutting problem.
+Zeoli123 Thanks...I am Craig, the dude in the video. Dan does not appear in our videos. You can check us out over at the Nature Reliance School youtube page as well. Thanks! - Craig
One inner strand 4 or 5 ft long with a 3/4" x 5" ish can be used like you showed cutting a groove to cut PVC plumbing pipe. This is great for a pipe in a trench where you can't get a saw. The strand can be passed under the pipe, grab the handles and start cutting. (Nylon mason's line will work too.)
THanks! It has been my desire to always be a garden gnome...lol :). My wife said I look pretty funny in that section as well. :) Glad you enjoyed the video, glad you got a good laugh out of it too :) - Craig
with that gear and hill trick you can also tie a large log to the cord then use it as a counter weight as you go down, works really well if you know your own weight and are good at guessing the weight of logs.
You could use it for snares if you were going for small game like pheasant! Countless traps. You could use it for lashing blades to sticks to make spears. You could use it to create a mesh on a MOLLE rucksack. Create a cooking frame to hang pots from!
+LeSadW666 All great ideas! You could really go on forever. I was hoping this would get others thinking about how they could benifit from carrying it themselves. Thanks for watching here at Dan's Depot! If you get a chance check out my personal channel as well ua-cam.com/users/naturereliance. ~Craig, Nature Reliance School
+DansDepot I watched a video you made of 5 survival knots, it included the truckers knot etc. But I can't find that video any more could you post a link?

Thank you for many good tips! Just a little comment about the horse- hubles. It would potential injure the horse, because horses tends to panic a bit when they are reastrained, and the paracord is so though it will not brake. Thick leather is recomended for hubbles. Or better, have a nice relationship with your horse sho he doesn`t run away :)
Absolutely wonderful and packed with great ideas. Thanks for sharing. I will share it with my teenage son. Very helpful and I thought your kids did a good job too!
DO NOT USE 550 CORD AS A TOURNIQUET. Completely agree with you
Cole Knowles what about multiple cords?
i always teach to roll up some jeans or a t shirt under it. it makes it easier with all types of cord
Junkies have been using shoelaces for years. It may not be comfortable and you may get a bruise but I doubt much else would happen.
What if you use a 1 inch “bracelet?
I don't care about redundant uses. I don't care about mislabeling of vehicles. What impresses me about this video is how functional this family is. A carry strap for 15 different items is still a single use.
not to mention the ones he repeated
I suppose the very important reason for mentioning a few carry straps is completely lost on you huh?. Regarding the repeats...I mentioned fishing line twice that was it.

I love that you have a good relationship with your kids. Keep it that way and I hope your kids can value your lo e for them..... I'm just homesick of that time in my life
one of the best UA-cam videos ever
Thanks Byron...I am currently doing a video on 101 uses of bandana...so be looking for it in the next couple of months..:)
Thank you for your video. I am also impressed with the teenagers cooperation and involvement.
I can't believe there is negativity for this video...720 thumbs down...The effort you guys put into this is amazing and appreciated....good job guys......Steve... Vancouver Island Bushcraft
Nice. thanks for sharing
i haven't had a chance to check out your channel yet but it looks like you had a lot of fun with your family making this video!! great work!!
Can u jump from a building if the building is on fire with this paracord ?
I just found this channel. I love this guy. Keep 'em coming.
+p2g1949 Thanks for letting us know! Also, if you get a chance check out my personal channel as well, ua-cam.com/users/naturereliance. Thanks for watching here at Dan's Depot! ~Craig, Nature Reliance School
+OmegaGear what did you say for the joke thing to suffocate people . Did you say a ringmeda net
~Craig
hey kris lo here is a video we did about paracord bracelet..ua-cam.com/video/2SN-SReF5bE/v-deo.html
What is that word he says at 8:14? They said it when I went zip-lining too. Is it "ambale"? I can't find the word anywhere online.
# 102..if you find yourself unexpectedly kidnapped and bound by zip ties/flex cuffs you can take the paracord you're using as shoes strings and it will saw through the zip tie material like a knife. Great video, I learned some new uses for 550 cord.. new subscriber :-)
If you don't mind, what kind of recording devices did you use making this video? The sound is great! Good video!
+The Griffin Benchmark Thanks for your support here at Dan's Depot! I use a Canon XA10. If you like this video check out my personal channel as well..ua-cam.com/users/naturereliance. Thanks again!~Craig, Nature Reliance School
You got it! Thanks for the info!
If you haven't already, please come check out my content as well. Thanks again!
+The Griffin Benchmark I checked it out! Looks like you've got some great project ideas. Keep it up friend! ~Craig
Thanks!
I have been
spending most of my time on my personal channel,
ua-cam.com/users/naturereliance.
You put a lot of effort into this so thumbs up for that.
I get the repeats about straps. I replace all cordage with 550 paracord whenever possible so it makes sense to me. Great video.
You sir, are the smart one of the bunch. THanks for commenting.
That sling bit for crappy survival kits had me rollin'! So did the "Thanks, daddy, you're the greatest!" lmfao. Great video!
J Shobe Nice additions, thanks for sharing. - Craig
Brilliant video. So many ideas I hadn't thought of myself. I appreciate you making it, and your accent is awesome.
Glad you enjoyed it Ernie. Please share it with anyone and everyone :)
Instructive and fun !
Maybe you could spend some times with skippers and fishermen to upgrade your knots and ligatures, your knowlegde and their one would be terrific !
Thanks 4 all
That would be fun! My wife would enjoy the change of scenery since we live in Kentucky! lol
Seriously, very entertaining. I subscribed and look forward to watching past and future videos! Awesome job!
Awesome vid Craig. Here's another useful one I've done- use the inner strands to weave a fishing net.
I liked the light hearted nature of this vid.
Keep it up
Thanks!
it takes a lot to make me laugh. You're a very funny bloke.
Cheers, Dan. That was entertaining and quite useful.
Thanks for watching here at Omega Gear! Please check out my personal channel as well ua-cam.com/users/naturereliance. ~Craig, Nature Reliance School
Loved your sense of humor! Thanks guys! Buying the product I was researching due to your video! :)
Great video brother. I like how you got the kids involved. "Thanks DAD!!" LoL
I hope you dont mind if i use this as a piece of curated content for my blog. I love this! Useful and corny in the funniest way!
Loved this video. Great sense of humor, Dan.
Very good point Jason...thank you for bringing it up...
THanks! It has been my desire to always be a garden gnome...lol :). My wife said I look pretty funny in that section as well. :) Glad you enjoyed the video, glad you got a good laugh out of it too :) - Craig
Great video. Moving Target holder was the best!!
Dude! You and your family are good stuff!!
I appreciate good humour, you guys would be a hoot to camp out with,,,, funny.
Great vid - guys - Very informative, imaginative and great humour too! Thank you very much !!!
Thanks!
Subscribed, i'm buying some paracord and a paracord bracelet. You'll never know when you need it and it is always good to have. Cheers!
Wow! That was great. Very good effort making that over a long period of time. Thanks. And good humor as well. Cheers bro.
Literally the most useful youtube video I have ever watched!!
Awesome sense of humor. Love how you say really funny stuff with a straight face. 😀😀
Thanks for watching here at Omega Gear! Please check out my personal channel as well ua-cam.com/users/naturereliance. ~Craig, Nature Reliance School
Thanks! Just got my free Utility band from Scoal and now know its needs.
with that gear and hill trick you can also tie a large log to the cord then use it as a counter weight as you go down, works really well if you know your own weight and are good at guessing the weight of logs.
I lost it at " a moving target holder"😂😂😂😂😂😂
I like this man... a survivor with much love for his children
Thanks! I do love my kids - Craig
The video is fun and educational. I think the moving target can be improved. Add a second strap to the target and pull it sideways.
+LeSadW666 Is this the video you are looking for? It's on my personal channel, Nature Reliance School, ua-cam.com/video/ABIRlz-qxSI/v-deo.html. ~Craig, Nature Reliance School
Nice points to add, thank you for doing that!
Even though some were repeated its still a hell of lot of uses.
Thanks!
Absolutely wonderful and packed with great ideas. Thanks for sharing. I will share it with my teenage son. Very helpful and I thought your kids did a good job too!
