I was sceptical, having played monk in tt before, but wow. With gloves that give you additional d4, flurry of blows hitting twice, on top of regular attacks, and with open palm additional damage, AND scaling unarmed dice, that class becomes a real "death by a thousand cuts situation". Excepts those are no cuts, those are hits by a dumptruck.

As a Gith monk I roleplayed that there exists a sect of Gith on Faerune that have the belief that to properly fight the mindflayers one must put their whole body into battling them.
Id like to think that their motto/mantra is "Steel and Silver will fail, we shall not."
Their créche would be in the ruins of an old monastery and using the old texts left behind the Githyanki would adopt the martial arts due to the deadly potential these attacks provide.

BG3 in general has seen a mild power increase for magic, but a major one for martials. Even with it, I'd tone down some elements slightly, particularly if you're not taking the special weapon abilities idea from BG3 (otherwise monk will overshadow other martials)

I actually made a tiefling monk that had been orphaned by his parents to a monastery because both parents are human and were horrified. Then, the reasoning as to why he left the cloister was because he wanted to explore the outside and what it meant to him after knowing just the cloister for so long. He's kind of like a paladin but a bit less empathetic if that makes sense, a bit more focused on balance rather than straight up goodness.

I loved playing monks in my table-top AD&D days. In those days, the TV show Kung Fu was still in reruns and I really enjoyed playing the monk along the lines that the main character in that show acted, a spiritual person who was also trained martial artist adventuring in strange lands. In that sense, the old rule set seemed more natural, as monks just got more and better attacks as they leveled up, plus got harder to hit, i.e., in lieu of unarmored defense, they just had a base armor class that improved with level. At the same time, they got mental and physical abilities which seemed to follow with physical and mental training. I say all that to say that the later editions where ki changed monks into magic-channeling people changed the very nature of the class and, in many ways, nerfed it since ki is sparse and the class remains a bit squishy. I'm still excited to try the class out when I get the full version (still waiting since I'm on Mac).

With some magic items you can kinda make that work. Late into chapter1 you can get gloves that set your dexterity to 18. Which let's you rework your character stats to be focused on str and wisdom instead of dex and wisdom for ac.
Combined with tavern brawler fest that let's you add double your str to attack and damage and you'll be hitting pretty hard.
Edit: Nvm, scratch that seems like Larian hardcoded monk's extra features to be dex only. Bonus action unarmed strike doesn't scale with str even if it's higher than dex, same for flurry of blows and stunning strike damage.

This is dependent on Larian being truthful and letting me use a glaive as a monk weapon, though.
For the Battlefield Master manuevers, I'd take some combination of menacing attack, perry, riposte, sweeping attack, and trip attack.
But if BG3 doesn't let me use the Glaive and flurry of blows, than this build isn't as good. So I'll have to see.

Monk is basically a Battle Support class. They're highly mobile and have several Utility focused features. Their direct damage leaves something to be desired, and most of the time they become a 'Stunning Blow' dispenser, trying to incapacitate enemies so teammates can crank out high damage numbers. The free Invisibility and teleports on the Shadow Monk can be great fun though; even with the tabletop rules.

I love monks, monks still aren’t very strong in 5e or in bg3. However you can make a fairly strong monk pretty easily. I like shadow monk assassin rogue for all of the stealth advantages and sneak attack opportunities you can create. Especially with the ‘Watchers Guide’ green spear available in the act 1 temple. Any miss gives the next attack advantage ergo sneak attack. Use this on a flurry of blows and both strikes actually get advantage instead of just one.

Monk Warlock could be fun too. Shadow Monk, get enough Warlock levels to get invocations and grab Devil's Sight and whatever other invocation you want. Then you can cast darkness that you can see through with Ki points and use Warlock spell slots for Armor of Agathys and Arms of Hadar.

Monk is my favorite class in dnd but those are the worst subclasses available, I guess that's why they needed to do some buffing. As it stands I low-key dislike all three subclasses and I am having second thoughts on going as a monk, not to mention that having just 3 ASI means you are always going to have a subpar AC, especially since you are going to want to forgo one to pick up mobile as well, and that's assuming you don't multiclass or things get even worse. The only one I can stomach in table-top is open-hand for the late-game kill at Will whoever you touched, which is great for roleplaying, the aoe isn't as attractive to me... So idk, I think I'll decide in character creation and go where my Heart takes me. If I were Larian I would have added an extra ASI at level 10, that would have made monk a much more viable option and enabled some multiclassing options for late game. Who knows though, maybe Larian made it easy to gain ability points through playing, which would make monk more viable, as it stands needing a High Dex and wisdom, mobile, and a decent constitution seems like a tall order and at the very least highly restrictive in terms of roleplaying, but we'll see.
