This is a little factoid that I use on videos with videogame shotguns:
The lethal range for 12 gauge 00 buckshot with a modified choke is 75m or 246 ft. You're essentially shooting 9 9mm (or .38 caliber) sized bullets at once, even if a single one connects, it will still deal significant damage to whoever it may concern. Unfortunately, that lends to them being very difficult to balance without them being totally OP like in Insurgency: Sandstorm or complete pea shooters like in Call of Duty 4.
In these larger scale maps, it tends to work a lot better, since the average range of engagement is around that distance or further away. You have to play within its strength, which is CQB, not shooting aroung open fields.
00 buck is actually 1 ounce of 9 pellets of .32 caliber shot, 9mm rounds are .355 and .38spl/.357 mag are .358 and .357 depending on bullet construction
Realistic reload time, limited capacity, carry ammo, and cycling time can help.
@Stuntman175 i think in close quarter we can have a deterrent in form of risk of friendly fire, and also overall tough maintenace and irreliability in mechanism can also help.
@@user-qv7pe2zn8z definitely maintenance. Friendly fire isn't really much more of a risk up close because the pattern doesn't open up much until you get further out (in real life). Up close, you functionally have a very bulky rifle with limited internal capacity (more so by modern standards), bulky rounds that limit your carry capacity, ammunition rarity (since not many other soldiers carry one), and slower reload time than most videogames make you sit around for.
@@jacobstaten2366 exactly I didn't think about reload time also, overall a shotgun doesn't work as fast or reliable as other weapons in close quarters
I love that they made the range efficacy of a 12 gauge accurate in this game. some of the modern shooters penalize ballistic performance x distance at a highly exponential rate.
I remember being disappointed that I had to use a shotgun in a game where most engagements are around 100 yds, but then I realized that you can actually kill with a headshot at 100 yds with it.

Rising storm 2 Vietnam the first game was set in ww2 where you play as US vs Japan but it was an add on to the game red orchestra 2 which you played as Russians vs Germans all three games are phenomenal

Forgotten Weapons did a video recently about the 1897 Trench Gun compared to a modern pump-action shotgun and they were relatively comparable. The spread was also considerably less than expected.
Did you know that the shotgun your using, the 1897 trench shotgun, was actually considered a war crime to use by germany in WWI? Because it was one of the only shotguns where you could hold the trigger and just shoot full auto instead of having to press the trigger every time. They tried making america stop using it because they said it caused unnecessary harm to german soldiers

so much is wrong with this. first of all, the 1897 was made by Winchester, NOT colt, second of all, it was NOT full auto. the only thing close to full auto it could do is slam fire, where you hold down the trigger and cycle the bolt rapidly to shoot faster. please at least get it right dude

The best thing about the trench gun in this game is the good range. Get solid kills with it up to 80m after that it gets a bit more iffy with having luck how the pellets hit.
If only there was a solid slug mixed with pellets for more range

I love how you pointed out the spread. This game is one of the only games that gets shotgun spread correct. Others make it way to disperse. Shotguns are quite effective at the ranges you were shooting at.

i agree that it is most definitely not realistic in that sense, but in the case of the longer effective range on the shotgun, is the realistic part in my opinion, most games nerf/balance shotguns by giving them super low effective range
@@D4RKV3NOM Yeah, the issue with shotguns in videogames comes down to game balance, that's why the german attempted to ban them as they were being mowed down by them.
In the VR game I'm developing, I approached shotguns as weapons that (when not using slugs) are very effective against unarmored targets, but they become obsolete against armor. Even the lower tiers of armor will reduce the damage a lot.
@@rookietherooks1594 In that specific instance yeah but if you watch the rest of the video, a shotgun blast turns people into body parts. I kinda like that gory style but it's not something I would describe as "realistic"

i’ve heard the brass shells used in the trench shotgun where for water proofing at the time other shells introduced to much moisture ig but i’ve also heard that the brass shells where over-pressured meaning more gun powder than your typical shotgun shell

All headshots are 1 hitkill no matter what rage or weapon… you could get a pistol 1hk from across the map.
I had no idea the trench was effective at those ranges! I know what I’m playing next time I play US.
Just like in real life. The right choke on the end can get you some nutty spread patterns depending on your load type lol

fun fact the range of the shotgun is accurate. during those old times for war purposes they used special military ammo for the trench guns. more power more range and special projectiles for that instant amputation effect! which is why the opposing forces tried to get the shotguns banned for combat.

Developers make it 'realistic' and then I have to watch an UNrealistic FOV accompanied by the mechanical movement patterns of a hand controller. Yup. Don't mind me - I'm old and crotchety - and this was the first video I opened this morning.

This game is actually quite have realistic bullets so a single hit from 9mm can be lethal because back in WWII there’s no such thing as Armor vase, atleast not in mass uses like morden day standards.

That DING sound is only when a headshot happens which is always a instant black sreen into redploy countdown. any headshot is a one shot kill from any distance. love ya vids man you keep it amusing but also enjoyable gameplay. The trench shotgun is so good except if you miss the first shot that is the chance enemy has to poke out the sooul of your soldier lol. But y a, DING = Instant black death screen for redployment at end of countdown. If not killed instantly by a headshot, as i mentioned will always kill 1 shot, then thats when a player might have the chance to return fire or take cover because as you know the supression is intense and adds to having to rememkeber to keepo calm if firing back after being shot first. Its possible to take out enemies in situations like that but usually more often than not in my own experience once that supression get more than just the initial effect starting out, if enemy is still alive within 3 seconds of the gun fight thats when you know your dead usually lol

I think this is how games should do shotguns. Not terrible at range, (well they are compared to other guns) but devastating at close range. I think HLL did am amazing job balancing the M1897

Due to games and the "balance" they have to strike for people completely underestimate the effective range of shotguns. Those things are absolutely lethal even on further ranges.
They should make one with the Czech Legion.

In reality, shotguns have a tight spread up to 30 meters when using BuckShot. 10-20 meters makes limbs disappear. Maximum effective range is around 60-70 meters
