  • In this Range Report, I get some trigger time with another interesting offering from Rock Island Armory. This is the Rock Ultra FS 1911 chambered in 10mm. It comes as a basic 1911A1 with an 8 round magazine and has all of the same controls and ergonomics you would expect from a quality pistol of this type. RIA and Armscor have really upped their game when it comes to 1911s in recent years and I know the 10mm is a revered caliber. This video documents my personal thoughts, experiences and opinions with this pistol. Yours may vary.

I enjoy your honesty and authenticity. I really like my Rock Island 45 ACP. Have been looking at this 10mm lately.

I own one myself. I have the same opinion as you do. You gave a good, honest review. I appreciate that. I have owned and collected firearms for 48 years now, reloaded for 44. I am not an expert marksman either, but I have taught some who are now. I taught a buddy of mine to shoot in high school. He went into the army, coming out a Ranger. His instructor in boot camp asked him where he learned his breathing and shooting technique. He was impressed. My older brother and I shot all the time as kids, then he went into the Marine Corps. He missed expert by one point. He taught me how the Marines teach breathing control. I passed it on.

You did one of the best vids on the net for this handgun. You will always get critical and jealous people criticizing others. BTW, your groups would stop the bad guy easily. Way good enough

I just bought one of these from a coworker. Haven't tried it out yet, but I'm looking forward to it. It feels good in my hand, and the trigger is really nice. Short take up, crispy. I like it. Not sure about the disassembly, but it's not that big a deal to me. It feels solid, no rattle, which I guess some people want and some don't. We'll see how it plays out.
Also, TIL some gun guys are swingers. Never thought about that before today.

Picked one up last week. I’m crazy about full size pistols. Only bought this cause 10mm was a caliber I didn’t have and insane price. Seems to be a well built 1911.

I have the CS model, this is a fantastic gun. Just can't be beat for the price. After about the first 400 rounds and good cleaning and lubed up it has been 100% reliable. I do run after market mags. Wilson or Tripp both work great.

Because of the price, I always thought the Rock Island was substandard, so I've never given it a second look. I have been wanting to learn to do trigger job in 1911, but I don't want to mess up any of my guns. Maybe next time I'm at the shop, I will take a look.

This might be the perfect pistol for that.

Best tool to break down the gun is a single staple piece. I usually have a staple gun on me to staple up targets, I break a single staple off, bend it to fit into that little hole, and break my gun down. I carry this 10mm and a Ronin EMP in 9mm, commander sized. Both break down the same. I agree with you, the traditional break down is better. And you're not that bad of a marksman.

I don't like the paper clip either but the bull barrel adds weight. That helps.

I might try the 10mm. I have an RIA 1911 in 45ACP and it beats my Colts and Kimber’s. Just heavy.

Ask the guy who criticized you which of your shots he would like to get hit with. I find this usually stops their complaints especially when you hold the target against their chest.

Rock islanf issued a hige voluntary recall for some models and some may be upset at that but i think its big of them to do

Have you tried the typical way, even though they want the paperclip thingy? Kimber has gone in that direction, too, and I WILL NOT buy a Kimber any longer. I worked at a gunshop from 2003 to 2007 and had to work on a few. My Kimber CDP was the old style and it was super accurate...but the paperclip thingy. Bah Humbug. Let us know if you try to disassemble it without the paper clip.

Good morning, Jason, that is an amazing pistol. I have a Philippine 1911 frame with my favorite gunsmith Victor in Brisvegas which I am planning to make a 10mm. As you know by my constant rambling, I am a huge fan of 10mm. And when you have it in a 1911. It's just amazing, and I know Saint John would approve. Your comment about the difference between 40S&W & 10mm is on the money. I own both and the 40 is really snappy. Keep bringing out 1911 reviews and watch the channel grow. How about a Para Ordnance review. Cheers. By the way a 🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘review with a bonus Koala stamp. 🐨P.S. the field strip is easy once you get your head around. I only spoke Saint John in my dreams last night and he is cool with it. 😁

Unless you’re running Sig VCrown, Underwood, Buffalo Bore, or a Double Tap you’re probably running weak 10mm ammo.

@MrKingArthurhk.. I have a RIA 9mm 1911 FS.. it shoots as true as other brands ive tried. Have not had a single issue with it in the years of ownership. Where it's aimed is where it sends. That's my own personal experience
