  • The Pebble Steel is a major leap forward in smartwatch style - its metal band and muted accents make it one of the best looking smartwatches yet. But the Pebble Steel still isn't perfect, and competition from Google and Apple and their established ecosystems is still a real possibility. More from The Verge:

    The updated Android software wasn't ready in time for the review? Perhaps you should've waited a bit then, instead of releasing an incomplete review. The app ecosystem is an important part of the usability and should've been included.

      Perhaps Pebble should have had their software ready for the review units.
      You see how I flipped it?

    While the steel version looks great, it's more durable and is a little more compact but I don't think it fully justify the 100$ price difference without any functional or internal upgrade

    • @Im5t3fan
      @Im5t3fan 10 років тому +4

      Although there is no functional or internal upgrade, you should realise a watch is mostly a fashion statement. (a $1000 watch doesnt read time better than a $20 watch) Therefore making it look like an actual watch is extremely important. The fact that it actually looks good and is more useful than any $250 watch you can buy right now justifies the price imo.

      @C-Mack33 10 років тому

      Stefan van der Lee That is a pretty dumb reason. A Rolex watch is more expensive than a Fossil watch for sure because its a fashion statement. Same with purses and clothes in general. It shows you can afford that particular brand to people. However, the Pebble doesn't really have much in the way of competitors. The $100 price difference is just absurd.

    I would like to know if when scratched does the watch or metal strap change colour (become silver as the paint comes off) or does it remain black even after the scratch?

    I would've never bought this for the original $250 , but I got it used for $110, and I like it.

    This would've been an impulse buy at the original pebble price-point, but for $250 it's really testing it's luck that tech fanatics will make this a success, because I doubt it will attract too many ordinary consumers.

    Looking forward to the Razer Nabu... looks to be extremely promising in a lot of departments and at a hopefully affordable price (current dev price:$49)
    Their commercial is laughable though.

    Did you get the black matte pebble for review purposes only or it was purchased from pebble site? If so, how long was it before it arrived?

    for me personally it's between the Razer Nabu and the pebble. The Pebble has LOTS of potential but for $250 it's not worth it. While the nabu isn't out right now the features they're promising will give Pebble a run for their money being basically a notification center and fitness band for your phone depending on the price.

    Its nice, the only problem is I don't want to spend that much money on a smartwatch right now. However if anybody wants to gift this smartwatch to me I would be more than happy to rock it, which is more than I can say for all the others.

    whats the difference between this and the original pebble? Besides the steel part. Is the app still the same for both? Is the hardware the same? Are the apps available for both or does the steel have some that the original doesnt?

    • @NaN0s7
      @NaN0s7 10 років тому

      Everything is the same besides the look and feel of the device, for example, the steel has a steel band, closer and easier-to-press buttons and is slightly smaller. There is no other hardware/software differences, they both do the same thing and have the exact same processor inside. The extra $99 is just for the more luxurious looks.

      NaN0s7 No, the Steel also has twice the storage space of the original.

      ***** Nope. The Original Pebble had received an update that allows it to install 8 apps too, just like the Steel.

    Idk I want one but Im not sure if Im willing to shell out 250 for it. The plastic one just looks to plain for me but the steel one, well that's a bit pricey for what it does on iOS. Bummer

  • @NahkeaTaata
    @NahkeaTaata 10 років тому +1

    You said it yourself - Android software was not ready for the time of the review. So this review is pointless, and biased, and there is no other point to look at, than a iOS user. Gotta love Verge.

    I just sold both my Galaxy Gear and plastic version of this watch. I would have considered the steel had they implemented a touch screen similar to the Gear but no, seems like the same old Pebble just in steel. The Gear was far more sophisticated in all most every aspect. I just didn't like the 'flashy' attention it drew to itself. You convinced me not to buy this with it's clumsy side button control. Wearables is the future but not this simple pager/e reader device.

    id rather burn my money, 300 bucks after shipping/tax, for what reason? a useless watch with a really pixelated and ugly face? why not just buy a cheap watch? Theres many 300 dollar luxury watches

    • @trentbosnic
      @trentbosnic 10 років тому +7

      "A useless watch"? Have you watched any Pebble videos? It's just awesome for reading notifications when you are anywhere, and doing it much faster than pulling out your phone and unlocking it. It has insane functionality on Android, allowing you to reply to messages with quick replies, and people are even using the Pebble with automation to lock/unlock doors around their house, or turn on appliances/electronics. It's seriously endless, if you have Android, you need to do a little more research.
      It's also set at $250 delivered to anywhere in the world.
