    This probably isn't the best video to ask this question on but have you ever kept angelfish together with a pike cichlid? I have a lone pike temporarily being housed in a 20g while his new 70g is being cycled. I have always been interested in keeping angelfish but was not sure if the aggression of the pike would be too much. He has only had problems with my cories (he kept trying to eat them) but he left my paradise fish alone.

    Thanks for this video man! I had some snails come in on some plants and they've taken over my tank. My little 5g Fluval has a serious infestation problem. Do you think that adding assassin snails would help? I'm probably going to have to take out all of my plants and rinse them.

    Hey wsup bud I have 1 tiger nerite and one zebra nerite together with 4 mystery snails. 3 days ago my tiger one has been in its she'll and hasn't moved at all and 2 days my zebra one did the same thing about an inch apart away from eachother. I admit the last 2 feeding sessions I've over fed the tank leaving alot of debris thinking the snails would clean up. Also have 1 beta, 1 molly and 3 tetras. Had 5 but the last 2 days 2 have died. Planted aquarium. Not heavy though. Also having little white worms and little jumping crustaceans in the substrate. Can they be harmful to my 2 snails?

    Dustin, when I was a young girl I was taught to use alum for pests on plants. Now I'm old so I can't recall exact amounts but it was only a little bit in water. Say one gallon water and one teaspoon alum. Soak plants 3-5 minutes. Rinse well after dip before adding to tank. I would have hydra insects after my fish because I collected plants in the wild. I started fish tanks at 10 yrs old and at 62 yrs still going.The pros for collecting wild plants were the daphnias and my guppies loved those.. lol besides I liked a few snails such as the ramshorn.

    I love my Mystery Snails. Love that you included some. I have Blue,Gold and White. They do leave a lot of clutches (eggs) but it seems to even out perfectly with a couple assassin snails to eat enough to keep my tanks well stocked with amazing colors. All colors mate with each other. Very Cool. They're also really fast. Zipping across the tank from side to side with amazing speed. Guess they blow up the 'Snails are slow' theory '.
    Pond snails I can easily life without. ......great video. .Thank you. ..

    Hey guys, I'm new to the tank stuff. I'm wondering what are the differences between the snails come with the plants and the pet ones. We just started our 10 gal tank last week and got a small mystery snail at the same time. However, it was my fault, the mystery snail was dead, but we got some other brown-grey-ish baby ones (I guess I did not wash the new plants very well). Do they behave in the same way in the tank? Why people kill some types and pet the others?
    I notice the baby ones will eat the green bean I dropped for the mystery snail too.
    R.I.P. my first snail :(
    Anyway thank you Dustin for the video! Any help will be appriciated!

      Apple snails refers to two different types of same species. The diffusa or mystery are legal and found in pet stores and LFS. The Cana gets far bigger and is illegal to ship/travel across state lines, but to my knowledge not illegal to own.

    Hey Dustin! Great video, I'm currently battling pond snails in one of my tanks but I'm thinking about getting an assassin snail to take care of them. They're one of the best ways to eradicate those pests. Question- Have you ever had any problems with your mystery snails in tanks that are dosed with dry ferts/high co2? I had a couple in my main high tech tank and they died only a couple months later, both days apart. Nothing else in the tank was affected, only them. I'm wondering if I should try them again to help me with my green spot algae, or maybe nerites? What would you recommend?

    • @Dustinsfishtanks
      @Dustinsfishtanks  8 років тому

      +Ve Mo i am always a little worried when I add too much potassium with snails or shrimp- oxygen levels could have gotten low perhaps or a combo...Try them again or roll with nerites

    • @xXVenoEmoXx
      @xXVenoEmoXx 8 років тому

      Yeah, I was dosing slightly more potassium than normal for my hydro's but I guess it was too harsh for the snails. :( Have you had luck with nerites helping with GSA? I've been struggling for months with this stuff and just can't seem to find the right dosage of phosphates, so it keeps coming back. My amanos and SAE don't touch it so was looking for snails that would haha.

      any aquarium requires atleast some kind of surface water movement, labyrinth lung fish exluded (beta), you need to keep the protein film from forming on the water surface. allowing air exchange into the water column.

    I've always loved snails. Back in the day, I had little pond snails, rams horns and the long spiral kind that lives under the gravel and of course mystery snails. I never had mystery snails breed in the tank because i only ever kept one at a time, but a few years ago I got 4 ivory mystery snails for a 55 gallon tank and they started breeding. At one point I had about 200 snails in three tanks. I had to get rid of all but the 55 gallon when I moved last year, because we are only allowed to have 1 aquarium per unit where I live. I also got rid of all but 20 snails. They have tried to breed a few times, but I have 3 dojo loaches in there. They don't bother the adults, but they eat the babies as fast as the snails can produce them. I am now down to 10 ivory snails. I guess if I want to keep snails in the tank I'll have to grab some babies when they hatch and raise them somewhere else until they are too big for the loaches to eat.

    I love snails. I went into Petsmart and they gave me a bog full of rams horns. I also have a couple of apple snails. They love green beans but particularly Del Monte cut green beans. I toss 3 or 4 pieces in the tank and they are on them. It is a great way to cut down on your snail population. Put in a green bean and in a little while it will have lots of diners, pluck them out and you population is culled if you want. Thanks for the video! HAPPY MAY!

    I have mystery snails and they are laying eggs daily, I just keep tossing them out, cause I do not want 1000 snails in my tank.

    Mystery snails breeding like crazy in my tank. They crawl above the water line and lay a big pink egg sack. I looks like someone stuck a piece of pink chewing gum on the rim of the tank. If you want them to breed just over feed your tank. The more you feed the more they breed.

    has anyone else used crawdads to get rid of their snails? when I get snails I go down to the river and find a smaller crawdad about 2 inches. I find that the smaller crawdads do a better job and can get in between the rocks and tighter places better and the smaller they are the less likely they will go after your fish. they will also eat your plants so I would recommend that you only leave the crawdad in your tank long enough to get rid of the snails. they will also need a place to hide and a simple piece of 1.5inx3in piece of PVC pipe or something ground level they can hide in or they will burrow under your rocks. They mostly come out to feed at night and will also eat Omega One veggie rounds. I personally like crawdads and keep one in my tank because I think they are cool, the crawdads we have here in Montana are a brown color but after being in a tank and fed the Omega One they turn blue which is pretty cool.

    I had a snail and it laid about 100 eggs around the tank and I didn't even know I had it... I bought a plant from petsmart and I geuss there was a snail in the plant and I never saw because it was in one of my decoration and I only came out at night so I had to scrape all the eggs out and it was a PAIN.

    You ate the snail?! My mystery snail just died yesterday and I'm not sure why. I'm thinking it was bc I didn't feed her any thing? My local fish store told me that she would just eat the fish waste and the left over fish food. Any idea what I did wrong? I loved my mystery snail. I'd like more but want to make sure I am well aware of how to take care of one before getting another one. Thanks for the video. Hope you see this!

      mysteries need to eat a lot and they don't eat any fish waste at all. while they do eat leftover fish food, if you have any leftovers, you're overfeeding anyway. you either need an algae infested tank, or invest in some snail specific food + provide them with some fresh veges from time to time :) my ramshorns are cleaning my driftwood at the moment, but once it's clean i know i'll need to provide veges :D

    Usually i keep all my snails (just pond snails) in my planted tanks as they dont eat my plants and just do their own thing.
    I find them more Natural.
    Tho recently the snails in my "Loach Tank" (4x Kuhli, 1x Pakistani Loache) got heavily culled my Pakistani Loach got big enough and starting eating all the snails (Except 5 large ones that are about 1cm across) The rest all had a hold in the top of them and he is looking very chubby.. :D
    Note: The pakistani and kuhli loach get along great and will happily share a ball of blood worms.
    (27.5*C) 7.0 ph - nothing much i can do about ph water here not easy to alter :( .
