you said the nerite snails need brackish/salt water to breed. I have some in my cichlid tank that have laid eggs. Do the eggs need salt or the snail?
hey dustin whats the cheapest fish you have just a topic you havnt done yet.
This probably isn't the best video to ask this question on but have you ever kept angelfish together with a pike cichlid? I have a lone pike temporarily being housed in a 20g while his new 70g is being cycled. I have always been interested in keeping angelfish but was not sure if the aggression of the pike would be too much. He has only had problems with my cories (he kept trying to eat them) but he left my paradise fish alone.
what's the best way to provide calcium for their shells? mine tend to have problems with cracking/ splitting shells
shove some regular cuttle bone (from the bird section) into the substrate
Thanks for this video man! I had some snails come in on some plants and they've taken over my tank. My little 5g Fluval has a serious infestation problem. Do you think that adding assassin snails would help? I'm probably going to have to take out all of my plants and rinse them.
Hi Dustin, I bought some brown apple snails yesterday and they have burrowed in the substrate. They've been like that all day.
Hey wsup bud I have 1 tiger nerite and one zebra nerite together with 4 mystery snails. 3 days ago my tiger one has been in its she'll and hasn't moved at all and 2 days my zebra one did the same thing about an inch apart away from eachother. I admit the last 2 feeding sessions I've over fed the tank leaving alot of debris thinking the snails would clean up. Also have 1 beta, 1 molly and 3 tetras. Had 5 but the last 2 days 2 have died. Planted aquarium. Not heavy though. Also having little white worms and little jumping crustaceans in the substrate. Can they be harmful to my 2 snails?
Another great video Dustin. Love the energy and enthusiasm of your videos.
The only problem I've encountered with the Mystery Snails is they've started eating a lot of my java moss. (Isn't a big deal if you have a lot).
Tylomelania snails are my fave! They love my hard alkaline water and breed some beautiful colors.
Dustin, when I was a young girl I was taught to use alum for pests on plants. Now I'm old so I can't recall exact amounts but it was only a little bit in water. Say one gallon water and one teaspoon alum. Soak plants 3-5 minutes. Rinse well after dip before adding to tank. I would have hydra insects after my fish because I collected plants in the wild. I started fish tanks at 10 yrs old and at 62 yrs still going. The pros for collecting wild plants were the daphnias and my guppies loved those.. lol besides I liked a few snails such as the ramshorn.
I have a black mystery snail and it’s killing and eating my fish any thoughts?
It’s eating beta’s Molly’s plattys tetras guppies And t tiny fresh shark I got once in petland u name it. It’s eaten them all
Hey Dustin...... how do I get rid of pest snails in my cherry shrimp tank
How can I keep my snails from overpopulating? I don't have fish yet, for various reasons. They seem fine now, but I'm starting to see a lot of eggs everywhere, and I'm worried of overpopulation.
do you have a website where I can purchase fish or plants
What was that plant called at the start?
I've also used Kosher salt and water method in the past. Seems to work as well. I can visibily see the snails fall off after a few seconds
does it work for giant toxic leaches?
I love my Mystery Snails. Love that you included some. I have Blue,Gold and White. They do leave a lot of clutches (eggs) but it seems to even out perfectly with a couple assassin snails to eat enough to keep my tanks well stocked with amazing colors. All colors mate with each other. Very Cool. They're also really fast. Zipping across the tank from side to side with amazing speed. Guess they blow up the 'Snails are slow' theory '.
Pond snails I can easily life without. ......great video. .Thank you. ..
What do you think the most aggressive freshwater cichlid is
Hey guys, I'm new to the tank stuff. I'm wondering what are the differences between the snails come with the plants and the pet ones. We just started our 10 gal tank last week and got a small mystery snail at the same time. However, it was my fault, the mystery snail was dead, but we got some other brown-grey-ish baby ones (I guess I did not wash the new plants very well). Do they behave in the same way in the tank? Why people kill some types and pet the others?
I notice the baby ones will eat the green bean I dropped for the mystery snail too.
R.I.P. my first snail :(
Anyway thank you Dustin for the video! Any help will be appriciated!
I love my mystery snails. I think they are so cool. I just love watching them cruising around my tanks. I have them with my goldfish my betta and my plattys. I have gold and ivory. I would love some blue ones.
Thanks for this video. Very helpful. 👍
just wondering if there is a particular light fixture you like?
or could recommend.
Hey Dustin, quick question.. I made the mistake of not washing some plants I got from the pet store and I had blatter snails hitch hike in. not all 3 of my tanks are overrun. I have clown loaches, I have assissin snails... they aren't cutting it. if I do the bleach thing w my plants, do you think that will do the trick. I was looking into a snail trap as well. any suggestions
hows the snail go? are you succesful on getting rid of them
i dont mind a little algea so my pleco keeps the levals down to a comfortable leval
Dylan Mckerley I need a pleco
Alexbacon pleacos are heavy alge eaters
But if u have small plants like Dwarf baby tears they some times eat that tooo
Where and what kind of snail food to buy?
I like snails.. lol where can I get snails... some that can reproduce pretty fast or that I can get in bulk. and what is the best way to get rid of cloudy water..thanks for your videos..
i have these snails that are trrible they ley eggs under all my ornaments and plants and all and reproduce even if there is one snail. they lay cluster eggs of like 20 and it gets pretty crazy pretty fast
I saw my new loach eat snails yesterday, it was a miracle to see.
mudkip96 what type of loach, I have a snails I infestation of sorts. couldn't get a loach and he'd eat them?
hey dustin. what's your opinion on apple snails and are they still illegal to have?
+MSteveYang I don't think they are illegal because we have them here is Australia and we are not allowed to have anything!
i think i once heard that they were illegal here in the states because people would buy them and release them into the wild and they would destroy the ecosystem. idk if its true or not, but i dont see "apple snails" anymore... but i do see mystery snails
+MSteveYang I always thought mystery and apples were the same, maybe i'm wrong
MSteveYang they are perfectly legal where I live. they are commonly sold as mystery snails
Apple snails refers to two different types of same species. The diffusa or mystery are legal and found in pet stores and LFS. The Cana gets far bigger and is illegal to ship/travel across state lines, but to my knowledge not illegal to own.
Thank you
SO happy this was your species sunday! WI have a new 55 planted tank cycled. Everyones healthy but the only thing missing is snails. :D Ordering some of yours next week man, and can not be happier that I got to see them on your youtube. their awesome
Feels nice to check up on your channel! I recently fried some moss with a bleach solution to kill the snails, but I can finally see green buds coming back on it.
Hey D. What about a salt water dip for like 10-30 seconds. You think that would be just as effective and easier on the plant?
+JediSuPhu i recommend 5-10 seconds...thats it
Hey Dustin! Great video, I'm currently battling pond snails in one of my tanks but I'm thinking about getting an assassin snail to take care of them. They're one of the best ways to eradicate those pests. Question- Have you ever had any problems with your mystery snails in tanks that are dosed with dry ferts/high co2? I had a couple in my main high tech tank and they died only a couple months later, both days apart. Nothing else in the tank was affected, only them. I'm wondering if I should try them again to help me with my green spot algae, or maybe nerites? What would you recommend?
+Ve Mo i am always a little worried when I add too much potassium with snails or shrimp- oxygen levels could have gotten low perhaps or a combo...Try them again or roll with nerites
Yeah, I was dosing slightly more potassium than normal for my hydro's but I guess it was too harsh for the snails. :( Have you had luck with nerites helping with GSA? I've been struggling for months with this stuff and just can't seem to find the right dosage of phosphates, so it keeps coming back. My amanos and SAE don't touch it so was looking for snails that would haha.
Is Seachem Cupramine a worthy alternative to Clorox as a snail destroyer?
+wyzemann never used it
do apple mystery snails require a filter.please respond ,ty
any aquarium requires atleast some kind of surface water movement, labyrinth lung fish exluded (beta), you need to keep the protein film from forming on the water surface. allowing air exchange into the water column.
There is a snail in my tank it is very small and has transparent shell should I take it out?
metallica fan I don't know, is it an army or just one?
Thanks
i just ordered 5 of the zebra nerites for my tanganyika tank. Can't wait for them to arive!
Hey Dustin are there any snails that do well in an African cichlid tank?
I have three nerite snails in my cichlid tank right now. they are doing fine. cichlids leave them alone for the most part. they will flip one over from time to time.
Great info video man My semi planted tank got out of control with snails but were dealt with a few assassins.
+Angel gonzalez they do the job!
I love snails too :D I have ramshorn snails, mystery snails, melania, physa, assasin snails in the other tank, and beautifull sulawesi snails.
I need color and design varieties.
ur tank at the back is awsome... i wish i can have a tank like yours someday...
My favorite snail is the malaysian turbo snail, they only breed to what your tank allows, any ideas how to keep snails shells from breaking apart because of lack of cal?
+jeremiemcd add crushed coral to the tank....i would add like i lb per 20 gallons
+Dustin's Fish Tanks Appreciate bro, I just hope it doesn't alter the ph to much
+Marks Shrimp Tanks Thank you sir, I appreciate your help.
Would dry blood worm be okay to feed assassins
Mts are great, have them in all my tanks!
Good info Dustin. just got a few snails and some reproduce fast.....I may be regretting getting them at some point, I'm afraid lol
Very helpful video, thank you 👍
love my Horned Nerite snails..they help me eat the algae off my tank sides..always crystal clear..
Hey dustin does it kill the snail egg's' Because the egg's are protected slime. You can't see this stuff but you can feel it if. When I feel it I use a credit card to scrape the snail egg's. Thanks bro.
+Ruben yeah- the slim is no match for the bleach...
+Dustin's Fish Tanks dustin will the bleach kill the plants as well as the snails
If it would kill the plant, why would he do it in the first place? As long as you're not giving it too much bleach or too long in the bleach water it should be fine
looove them assassin snails. i had a nasty pond snail infestation when i first tried a planted tank and someone recommended i get assassin snails to get the pond snails in check and damn did they do a good job. got rid of hundreds of snails in like a month.
I love snails too. My first snail was a mystery, she was very sweet, now 2 nerites, assassin, ram horns and pond snails. Love snails, excellent cleaner uppers.
I have ten assassins I don't know what to do with them my bettas hate them
i really like this keep up the good work!
What about those malasian trumpet snails
def love mystery snails. have an outbreak of rams horn and trumpets in a couple tanks now. need more assassins haha
There are other less toxic ways, salt water baths and peroxide baths will work as well.
it took me soooooo long to realize you trolled me LOL xD
Having to buy new sand for my axolotl and fake plants cause of stupid snails in the tank 😑 Any ways to kill the snails safely in the tank without harming fish?
Gorgeous plant
I've always loved snails. Back in the day, I had little pond snails, rams horns and the long spiral kind that lives under the gravel and of course mystery snails. I never had mystery snails breed in the tank because i only ever kept one at a time, but a few years ago I got 4 ivory mystery snails for a 55 gallon tank and they started breeding. At one point I had about 200 snails in three tanks. I had to get rid of all but the 55 gallon when I moved last year, because we are only allowed to have 1 aquarium per unit where I live. I also got rid of all but 20 snails. They have tried to breed a few times, but I have 3 dojo loaches in there. They don't bother the adults, but they eat the babies as fast as the snails can produce them. I am now down to 10 ivory snails. I guess if I want to keep snails in the tank I'll have to grab some babies when they hatch and raise them somewhere else until they are too big for the loaches to eat.
Are the 100 neons dead?
Can this method be used to clean wild caught plants from parasites and stuff before putting them in the tank?
+Boško Vrbica for sure
+Dustin's Fish Tanks your totally right those loaches are the best to keep snails in check
+Dustin's Fish Tanks Please check out my Dragon fruit plants I just did a video
My Pygmy Puffer loves them I just let them do what they do, he keeps the population in check and I only really see empty shells. Great vid mate...
Good video Dustin, I have assassin snails all over my 125gal,they bred for me since I only started out with two and now have about 40. I have never seen them eat each other though, they just eat decaying plants and make quick work of a dead tetra.
+samueljames i should have posted a video clip of them eating a dead fish. you are right they crush dead fish too. congrats on the breeding! Tank on!
D
Hi Dustin, I love snails especially mystery snails. Is it possible for you to ship them to india for me? I am willing to pay towards its expense as well.
NOT a snail lover here!!! lol.. BLeached my plants last month and they melted.. UGH what the heck, will get it right one day. Thanks for the video love your energy
I have 3 mystery snails 🐌
In my fish 🐟 tank and I just spotted a cluster of eggs in my tank the other day.
I have a Gold snail and a gray snail and a little dark brown one.
The 2 that matted where the gold and gray ones.
I currently have Nerite snails 🐌.
I'm watching this on a Friday
Best snail for planted shrimp tank? Enjoyed the vid.....always.
I love Apple snails. I think that is the last mystery snail? But they ate great pets to have with your fish. My children loved it!
love it keep up the wonderful work plz
They have been eating little pond snails but there running out
snails are awesome. i love my ramshorns and trumpets.
plus u are my favorite youtuber thx
I love snails. I went into Petsmart and they gave me a bog full of rams horns. I also have a couple of apple snails. They love green beans but particularly Del Monte cut green beans. I toss 3 or 4 pieces in the tank and they are on them. It is a great way to cut down on your snail population. Put in a green bean and in a little while it will have lots of diners, pluck them out and you population is culled if you want. Thanks for the video! HAPPY MAY!
I have mystery snails and they are laying eggs daily, I just keep tossing them out, cause I do not want 1000 snails in my tank.
dustin my nerite zebra snails have reproduced and theres now lots of young snails patrolling my glass lol
Mystery snails breeding like crazy in my tank. They crawl above the water line and lay a big pink egg sack. I looks like someone stuck a piece of pink chewing gum on the rim of the tank. If you want them to breed just over feed your tank. The more you feed the more they breed.
has anyone else used crawdads to get rid of their snails? when I get snails I go down to the river and find a smaller crawdad about 2 inches. I find that the smaller crawdads do a better job and can get in between the rocks and tighter places better and the smaller they are the less likely they will go after your fish. they will also eat your plants so I would recommend that you only leave the crawdad in your tank long enough to get rid of the snails. they will also need a place to hide and a simple piece of 1.5inx3in piece of PVC pipe or something ground level they can hide in or they will burrow under your rocks. They mostly come out to feed at night and will also eat Omega One veggie rounds. I personally like crawdads and keep one in my tank because I think they are cool, the crawdads we have here in Montana are a brown color but after being in a tank and fed the Omega One they turn blue which is pretty cool.
I had a snail and it laid about 100 eggs around the tank and I didn't even know I had it... I bought a plant from petsmart and I geuss there was a snail in the plant and I never saw because it was in one of my decoration and I only came out at night so I had to scrape all the eggs out and it was a PAIN.
Nerites are my favorite diatom vacuums lol. If there was a radio station dedicated to 'tankers', you would be the best radio personality hahaha 😊
+Jacoda So Sundry haha- thanks! I try to bring it with the videos....I've never thought radio would work with fish tanks....ya gotta see the stuff ya know? thanks though! Tank oN!
+Jacoda So Sundry haha- thanks! I try to bring it with the videos....I've never thought radio would work with fish tanks....ya gotta see the stuff ya know? thanks though! Tank oN!
+Dustin's Fish Tanks Haha yeah lol
where is the name of mystery snail?
Damn I love snails I put them in all my tanks... Rams horn are pretty nice and small comes in couple diff colors ....Malaysian trumpets are really good for people with substrates cause they burrows in to it to aerate it
You ate the snail?! My mystery snail just died yesterday and I'm not sure why. I'm thinking it was bc I didn't feed her any thing? My local fish store told me that she would just eat the fish waste and the left over fish food. Any idea what I did wrong? I loved my mystery snail. I'd like more but want to make sure I am well aware of how to take care of one before getting another one. Thanks for the video. Hope you see this!
mysteries need to eat a lot and they don't eat any fish waste at all. while they do eat leftover fish food, if you have any leftovers, you're overfeeding anyway. you either need an algae infested tank, or invest in some snail specific food + provide them with some fresh veges from time to time :) my ramshorns are cleaning my driftwood at the moment, but once it's clean i know i'll need to provide veges :D
Usually i keep all my snails (just pond snails) in my planted tanks as they dont eat my plants and just do their own thing.
I find them more Natural.
Tho recently the snails in my "Loach Tank" (4x Kuhli, 1x Pakistani Loache) got heavily culled my Pakistani Loach got big enough and starting eating all the snails (Except 5 large ones that are about 1cm across) The rest all had a hold in the top of them and he is looking very chubby.. :D
Note: The pakistani and kuhli loach get along great and will happily share a ball of blood worms.
(27.5*C) 7.0 ph - nothing much i can do about ph water here not easy to alter :( .
Plus the nerite snails will bedazzle your tank decor.
The house outro music is funn! big ups! Tank on!
+e.g. no25andrew CAN YOU NAME who that is?
I'm from South Africa and nerite snails are illegal to import and they are nowhere to be found here. WE have been searching sooooo long.
Nice video dustin 👏👏 my kids always mess there clothes up with bleach 😂
+PsychedelicBabe haha- its a killer! Hope you are well sista!
Dustin's Fish Tanks I'm doing good thanks lovely 👌🤗😍
sea snails are yummy too
dayum u are funny! thanks for the tip!
