Magic seems so cool, so fun, the beginning learning curve is crazy for me. Yes I understand lands, tapping, tokens, artifacts, sorceries, instants, spells being an umbrella term; BUT there are so many special things on cards it makes my head spin. I once threw a game because I didn't realized that "Faerie Fencing" was a - X and killed my own creature. You throw in alchemy, investigations, crime, adventures, if X= Y then -1X +2Y if X=#of creatures in graveyard with "rat" description in your graveyard +1 for each brick in your house."
Fortunately, most people don't play Alchemy so that's something that's not a concern. But if you ever have questions or want to just get better informed, I have a Discord (linked in the description) that you can join and get all the help you need. We have a pretty active community.
ITS BEEN AO LONG!! I have been out of mtg for a few years and I used to watch your videos when I was playing before. I was looking for a guide to get back into arena as I was always more paper back in the day and dude I'm so excited to see your face let's go!!!
After playing Hearthstone religiously for 5 years, I left it last year and never looked back. I ALWAYS felt behind as a f2p player in Hearthstone. One would say it's a fairer monetization model than MTG:A, but I disagree. I started playing a year ago, and have all of the decks I like to play in Standard (brewing most of it myself), and now I started expanding into both Explorer and Historic. Drafting, Sealed,BO1/BO3, Brawl- tons of relevant and fun ways to play the game. I could go on, but I already bored myself. Takehome-note from a CCG-veteran: Give MTG a chance. You won't regret it.
You’ve got a new subscriber in me, thanks for breaking it all down! Still figuring it all out, but as a long time hearthstone user I understand what you mean by less random and that’s what pushed me away from that game and I’ve always enjoyed the art of MTG cards.
Welcome! It's a deep rabbit hole. The game has a lot of history and a lot of ways to play it. But you should have a good time with it. Feel free to join my Discord (linked in the description) if you ever want to ask questions or get deck help.
I honestly love all formats except alchemy.. and was able to save enough gold, then draft enough drafts, to actually pay for the mastery pass for free the last two passes.
just started playing because I started playing D&D and got interested in the crossover stuff. Made my first deck a karlach/raphael then I made a lord of the rings nazgul deck cause I also like that and didn't realize how insanely good it is I just like gimmicks
I feel hopeless trying to learn these games (Hearthstone was the only one I even remotely understood 😂) Even as a kid I never had the attention span to learn Pokémon with the other neighborhood kids lol but now that I’m well into adulthood I figured it’s time to figure these card games out. This video was helpful, thank you! Oh yeah, and I subscribed 🙂
Glad it helped. I have my Discord link in the description as well. Hop in there if you have any questions, want to work on decks, etc. I also have a UA-cam memberhsip where level 3 members can send decklists to me directly for private help too. Lots of options if you're wanting to learn.
Flowchart for MTGA --- Level ONE: 1a) Do you have money to sink into your hobby? 2a) Do you have a bit of money and hope to not spend any more (100 to 500usd+tax)? 3a) Do you want this game to be or basically be free? 4) see bottom Level TWO: 1b) Then you should just buy boosters / wildcards that you can budget for. First pick a format. Historic rotates the slowest and thus paying for pixels feels less bad because your expense will not rotate as fast as Standard. Ignore Explorer until people are equating it to Pioneer. Now look up meta decks and see what you need. Typically you need to open 90 to 180 boosters to get 5 or so of the rare lands (WotC changes the frequency of how often a rare land will drop; this is gambling opening packs). The value of opening packs: the first 90 packs of each set lets you play singleton nicely (when opening several sets this way). If you want 4x of each card: opening 250 to 300 boosters from a given set should cover a lot of your needs (if there are only 60ish rares in that set). ------ On the flip side, buying wildcards directly is cheapest option for making a single deck. Final thoughts, 500usd+tax buys you a lot to and probably gets you up and running for Historic. >1200usd+tax opens doors. 2b) Make a list of cards that you want to play. Try to focus on a set. Standard format rotates every 2 or 3 years (depending on WotC's mood). Whereas Historic format rotates slower. When crafted, my then B tier deck is still working 13 months later but is a D tier now for playing ranked mythic gameplay. That said, I'm happy with it to get to plat/diamond each month. Explorer isn’t really a format yet. Play at your own caution / until the community considers this identical to paper’s Pioneer. Upon choosing format, doesn’t direct purchase of wildcards fit within your budget? Maybe you should look towards Commander on MTGA - Historic. Thus to play singleton, opening a minimum of 45 to 90 boosters each set can help you grow your Historic singleton collection rapidly. I would buy in sets of 45 but know 90 is probably the sweet spot. If you just want one or two historic decks, buy the wildcards directly. Drafting is also advisable if you want to limit your spending. That you probably want to draft for 6 to 12 months and decide what sets you value (that you are missing). In that the shopping list you make today vs what you need after 12 months of drafting, it will be far more informed and you can best know where your money should go. Again: Standard rotates rather quickly and you will wish to sink more money into the next Standard if you choose to pay for Standard. (I have yet to do the exact dollar breakeven but I would think buying 200usd booster packs is a far better deal than 200usd of direct wildcards. Certainly at 500usd, buying booster packs makes sense.) 3b) Draft and learn to get good. Usually you can get 3+ wins in Quick or Premier. A good player can squeak out more (I dont have access to their records to understand their earnings over several sets). Also note, drafting 20 times for a given set is ok but when things are making sense, try drafting 40 to 60 times. Ideally you are earning enough gems that you do not need to inject cash. (IMO, the master pass is a trap). Please note: drafting is grindy and some sets feel bad. Know when to stop and wait for the next set. Magic drafting is fun. MTGA draft is work lol. 4) Doesnt sound appealing? Play paper Magic with friends who share the same budget and build EDH decks that focus on that given price bracket. EDH 1v1 is FINE to play. 4 player EDH is the norm but not everyone can sync up schedules.
I've played paper Magic for years with my son. We switched over to Hearthstone because of the great mobile interface. How is MTG The Arena Mobile interface or is this better played on PC?
It's fine. Like all games, PC will be easier/better due to convenience and larger images. That's pretty much the case every time. But the mobile app is totally serviceable if you're away from a PC.
Thanks. I wouldn't say it tough to learn. It's more about figuring out the best plays in the middle of the game. But the rules and stuff are pretty simple. If you have questions though, you can always hop in my Discord (link in description). We have people in there helping each other all the time.
This is late, but I want to main green, but I am curious about combo. I wanted to combo white and green, but black and green seems equally cool but in the other way. How do I know which I should go for, or should I just go mono green?
All you can do is check out combination until you find what works for you. Or maybe depending on what you're trying to build. There's not really a binary answer. You can always check out a variety of video on my channel. They are all color coded. You can also hop into my Discord to get help (link in each description).
Need help on something I wanted to come back to magic does this game follow the rules of the card game. Like cards can’t be used anymore after a certain time etc
I'm not sure I can answer as I don't completely understand the question. However, if you want to go into detail and get some longform explanation, just hit up my Discord (linked in each video description) and ask there. We can help you better that way, as UA-cam isn't the best for back and forth discussion.
I would fish around, there's probably an option or something you haven't completed or turned on. Not something I can help you with through UA-cam comments. Feel free to join my discord (link in description) and my community folks will help you out. We get lots of new folks.
I mean...kind of. In the sense that's it's a digital version of a paper card game. They will each have their quirks, plusses, and minuses, but yeah. It's the visually flashy way for you to play digital with people around the world of your preferred card game. :)
I just checked to confirm. Yes. They are on the main page on the bottom. The circles with the gold coins in the image. You can click them once to see what the goals are. You can click them twice to swap them out if it's something you don't want to do or can't do (once per day).
Hi PowrDragn, beginner here. I just wanna ask if you can add some cards from another deck to add in your desired deck to power it up. I came from Yugi-Oh TCG and I wanna learn how to play MTG. Thanks!
I'm not totally sure what you're asking, but if you want deck help I recommend joining my Discord (link in the description). I have an active community with people learning, asking questions, and getting help.
I tried out pokemon pocket tcg and just found the game bs. A fair model for f2p for sure, but you know whos winning T1. Even the advanced bot missions hit you with exploits. I just want to do draft and sealed in MTG. I hope its easy enough to farm up the currency for those formats. I dont really like chasing meta decks with everyone in standard.
It takes a little practice, but as you learn the game and the sets, it's doable. At the very least you can get enough to play at a fairly discounted rate.
Let me tell you...I have some stories about so many other reasons, I'm not interest in YGO. But regardless of how you got here, welcome to the game! If you wanna keep up with stuff we have daily MTG content on the channel. Be sure to subscribe and check out my strategy playlist (might help you out if you're newer).
Interesting. Almost everyone I know has had a full understanding of it after going through the tutorial and the color challenges. Feel free to join my Discord if you have any questions (link in each description).

Good beginner's guide. Also, if you don't want to do constructed, save up your gold to go drafting. Both types of magic are a lot of fun.
the starter deck duel seems like a great option tbh
It really is. Nice onboarding option to have available.
thanks mr. dragn, glad to have a good source to point new players to. there have been quite a few lately.
Yeah, I'd been seeing a lot of new faces, which is what prompted me to put this together.

From what I've gathered Arena is to Magic what Duel nexus is to yugioh, would you say that's a fair assessment? Anyway great video dude.
