I always thought this episode was the most poignant one of them all. Richie's desperation and frustration with life really comes through and you ALMOST start to feel sorry for him. Eddie has already given up on life, but you get the idea that Richie still has a tiny sliver of hope left that things can get better, but that hope is rapidly disappearing.
That’s not surprising because though it wasn’t the first screened on telly it was nevertheless the first episode they filmed. Sort of an internal BBC pilot, and Rik and Ade had only recently been greatly fascinated by Beckett’s _Waiting for Godot,_ which this script was intended to be their kind of comedic riff on.
Trust me things will never get better for them.....like Eddie said...get born..keep your head down..then die...if your lucky
Fantastic analysis.
Nah man ... imagine just being in class with Rik and the only person who can keep him somewhat calm is Eddie
Never im the new mesish 😅
LIFE BEFORE THE INTERNET
The thing about Bottom is, you think one scene is the best thing ever made and then you watch another and change your mind. Its timeless stuff. My favourite comedy of all time and I just never get fed up of it.
(Dring) Hrrrh. (Dring, dring) Hrrrrrh
Gypsy Slagwagon I know what you mean.
Fucking hard LOL at your username. Amazing.

Richie is completely insane. This show was so good!
You want some of this? Cos you're gonna get it, you old git

Acting within acting. How meta.
Can you do better?
I´ve seen every bottom episode about a thousand times, and it never ever gets boring. I love when richie talks to himself, especially when he, and eddie are trapped in a ferris wheel, thats the funniest monologue ever if you ask me : ))
I honestly reckon I have watched each one a thousand times too, no exaggeration. It's the best thing ever made.
Such a shame about Rik, he was such a freaking hilarious guy! I love how he manages to be so deadpan, yet also completely absurd at the same time :D He also has a really emotive way of dropping sudden pangs of emotion into his characters, like the scene suddenly turns really sad for a moment with one line delivery, and you actually feel sorry for this ridiculous character.
You nailed it Bro!
I wish I was Rik Mayall. I'd look great as Rik Mayall.
Lol
Reggie gets it.
I understand you Reggie...
I really understabd you.
What an incredible actor.. I miss him so much.
i love the way eddie looks so pissed off and bored with his hands on his ears while richie is talking to himself on the phone.
Fun fact: This episode (Contest) was actually recorded in 1989 (2 years before the show actually started) as the pilot episode, and then just stuck in the middle of Series 1.
Thanks for the info. I always got the feeling that this was the pilot and was recorded a fair bit earlier than the rest of the series - they look different/younger and the tragi-comic tone is slightly different to the rest of the series. Interesting to learn that it was shot in the 80s and a full 2 years before the actual show.
Love watching Eddie when he says switch on the tape recorder
He's probably used to Richie's insane ramblings and learned to block it out. Much like me when the mother-in-law is talking at me, or my boss asks if I wanna do overtime.
Love this scene. What an amazing guy, truly missed ❤️
I miss you, Lieutenant Sex Machine!
We need your humour more than ever in these insane times.
I love Rik Mayall, every thing he creates is like magic to me. I've been lucky enough to witness him live twice, one aged twelve and the other aged nineteen. Each time he had me pissing my pants. From childhood to middle age this guy has had me in stitches and I know his work will continue to do so until I'm deader than a can of spam.
Lucky, I've loved his stuff since I was young but I was too young to see them live
I've always imagined being in a room with Rik Mayall is like hanging out with Santa Claus.
RIP RIK, thanks for the laughs you have given me since i was a kid. Gone too soon :/
Dring Dring Dring 😂 Comedy Genius and missed everyday!
Eddies face in the background 😂😂
beardedcollie39 Im gonna nail this sick mother before the DA takes my badge
Goodbye Rik. Thank you so much for the fun and the laughter. One of the best.
Really miserable to hear Rik has died. Moments like this were genuinely inspirational to me.
He's not dead, he's within us all, who have a sense of humour, aka everyone born before 1990.
Sorry I'm 6 years too late, just saw this vid.
@@grimmfandango832 I was born in 1990 and I love Bottom.
@@grimmfandango832 as a nineteen year old rik mayall fan, I resent this accusation! Great comedy will live forever.

I thought about this scene randomly and for no reason at work today. Odd
It killed me at the time. Always will
Rik Mayall does a great nervous voice. Watch his dating video when they're at the dating agency.
RIP Rik Mayall - Thank you for the belly-laughs and face-cramps which I didn't know existed until you came along . . . . Bottoms Up to you!
This guy is awesome!.........You can watch it 100x times and it`s still Hilarious
He was the greatest on the phone! Had he just understood what all that meant...
"I'm more, sort of, Elizabethan, you know ..... 13th century, Shakespeare, French Revolution, all that"
Love how Richie just lumps 600 years of history together 😂
"Huh, there's the phone. I'm great on the phone. HELLO, great! HI!, greater"
Lieutenant sex machine, homocide
What I mainly loved in this episode is seeing Richie constantly burn his hand on the kettle lol.
"OH SHIT!!"
rik Mayall and Adrian edmundson- absolutely amazing- pure comedy that will last for ever. Please come back to our screens!!!!!!
Ah yes back then when BBC had balls to make and air this kind of television.
This is pure bloody genius cracking show and both at the top of their game ! R.I.P. Rick😄😄😄😄😄😄👍
"He's got Janey, swithc on the tape recorder" XD that always makes me laugh!
RIP MATE
The desperation Eddie's face shows to just be left alone. 🤣.
R.I.P old friend
The bit with the kettle makes me laugh to the core! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
Eddie just sitting blanking Richies insanity out as he tries desperately to entertain himself 😆 it's hilarious and so sad
That's just what I love about their relationship. Eddie couldn't care less and seeks out a sad form of oblivion. Richie wants something so much more but finds a depressing comfort in Eddie's version of oblivion.
@@rjowen that's got to be the best description of their relationship!
1:23 🤣🤣🤣 God I loved watching this show years ago! 😂 R.I.P Rik Mayall ❤️
I MISS Rik sooooo much, gone before his time. Never say "Was" always say "Is" because he's not gone in memory!
i've loved bottom (the tv show) since i was about 14, one of the best comedies to have been made.
still funny and genius even now, Rik was gone too soon
He was so amazing....

“OH SHIT!”
I am probably the only 14 year old who loves this program because no my age has ever heard of it. I known this show since I was very young.
This is a very good sitcom.
I still can't imagine Mark hamill sitting down and watching this gold

Eddie, it's him again, he's got Jamie!

2:07: “Fourteen Million Billion Squillion Zillion Dollars?”
Hahahahaha!
I believe Seth Mcfarlene based stewie on Rik Mayall and won’t admit it.
Now you mention it
I always thought so..
It's actually based on Rex Harrison, MacFarlane has said this multiple times.
Absolute legend!!!
‘Throw away your sticks’

"Lieutenant Sex Machine, Homicide" is how I'm gonna answer my phone from now on. Should get a few laughs...or people will just think I'm crazy!
Legend
'Just throw away your sticks *BONK* April fool haha.'
Nearly choked from laughing.
Rik worked on this kind of character all his life. Kevin Turvey (actuallllly) for example. My neighbour for a while. RIP Rik Mayal. 👍🇬🇧❤
Those 23 people who disliked this are obviously the ones who Richy played the April fool jokes on :)
Rik is just the best and still missed a decade later.....
Genius and Rik Mayall are synonymous.
Perhaps I'm the new Messiah 😆😆😆
Too right!
If anyone watched Cow And Chicken in the late 90s, it has the same vibe as Richie and Eddie's relationship.
*Richie puts hand on hot kettle*
“OH SHIT!!!”
Hahahahaha!
Rik Mayall = LEGEND. 30 + YEARS OF LEGENDARY COMIC GENIOUS.
Really got me down hearing he died :( gutted
"Lieutenant sex machine homicides?"
@MAYFLY01 That is funny when says his intelligent but he still touches a boiling hot kettle. The pretend telephone conversation his also favourite of mine.
Eddie's bewilderment and trying to block out Richey makes him look like a police
Man listening on head phones to the call.

classic!
My dad is like this on the phone!
'He's got Janie' lol
Hello? Great.

Ha ha, ive read his autobiography. I love when he meets God after his accident. I wish he would have been a tad more serious in it though.
