A video on the firearms of Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines would be a good excuse to fit a bit of both in, given how the various clans are used to reflect the disparate depictions of vampires in assorted media.
For anyone who's curious, FAMAS really do have bayonets on top of the barrel rather than underneath. More on the bayonet: aren't vampires also hurt by silver and/or blessed steel? If you had a sanctified silver bayonet, made out of a melted down cross or something, that could also theoretically work, right? Also, another horror game with guns Johnathan should look at is FEAR.
I'm more familiar with werewolf lore than vampire lore but I believe you're correct. Silver, blessed steel, wooden stake, fire, sunlight, and beheading can take them down.
I mean, Dracula gets killed by a regular Bowie knife and kukri, so the whole "wooden stake" thing is a little bit more modern than that. I'd guess the "piercing the heart"-part is the important part
@@tiesiemo3the stake thing comes from before that actually, people believed that a killed vampire would rise again after they were buried,so they put a stake through their heart to prevent it. But yes,the heart piercing is still the crucial step, not the stake itself. That can be made of anything,as far as I know, but it’s cheaper and more convenient to use wood rather than forging something you use once and then literally bury
I feel like the reason for the rotating barrels on the stake launchers is *specifically for* aligning the shots. Aligning the barrels with the top position would mean that you're launching the stakes from the same position every time. If they just launched from a static position, you would miss out on the accuracy needed to pierce the heart of your target. You'd end up with each stake hitting somewhere different.
Personally, i think it's moreso the fact that having them rotating means they'd only need one lauching mechanism instead of three. If it's accuracy then all they need to do is to tilt to offset the spike so that they's have the same convergence point. It's how double barrel shotguns work as a hunting gun.
Johnathan point is they could have the stakes rotate into position with a barrell, instead of having 3 barrells. As 3 barrells is alot more weoght. Like a revolver.
Most likely it is mainly for gameplay aesthetics. The gun looks much more interesting with the rotating barrels and it feels like something is happening, as you lack the loud bang and flash from a firearm. The same goes for the breech loading.

One big thing I wish we saw more is how multiple early vampire myths said vampires only stay dead when the stake is left in. Once it's removed they're undead again. The idea was that the stake held them in their coffin. I haven't seen this idea, or a variation, show up in ANY vampire games/movies (other than an old PS1 game called "Legacy of Cain"). It'd definitely make things more interesting, can't reuse a stake.
I love the story of the Burgess shotgun and Teddy Roosevelt during his time as New York City's police chief. For those not familiar, in 1895, a salesman for Burgess, who was also a skilled clay shooter, basically smuggled a Burgess shotgun into Teddy Roosevelt's office, produced said shotgun, and cranked off six blanks in the blink of an eye without warning. Teddy Roosevelt was so impressed that he immediately placed a large order for the police department
the fact that Johnathan not only judges the guns by how realistic they are irl, but also how the lore of the game(s) work; is why i keep coming back to watch this series
Was really hoping they'd show him the folding shotgun which is based on a super rare gun. It even has an accurate pump system. There is a cool forgotten weapons episode on it.
Please make a video breakdown on *METAL GEAR SOLID 3* weapons. So many weapons in MGS3 to react and comment on like the Patriot's infinite ammo magazine, the EZ tranq gun, Snake's customized officer M1911A1, Snake whittling the pistol grip to use a knife for CQC, Ocelot's SAA juggling skills, The End's paratrooper tranquilizer Mosin Nagant, the Davey Crockett recoil-less nuclear launcher and Eva's chinese mauser clone.
This is the reason why Jonathan is great, he tries to make sense for a fictional setting like the stake and questions behind why they use a blade for the premium one instead of a stake
So my impression regarding staking in the game world is that you just need any object long enough to pierce the heart fully, and the reason there are wooden stakes may be superstition, or simply because sharpening a stick is an easily accessible source when youre a civilian without access to bayonets
That first revolver shown had a Ruger Grip similar to the GP100. You can tell by the spring on the side of the frame which has been a ruger feature since the Speed/Security/Service Six line that evolved to the modern GP100. As for the frame and barrel, it reminds me of the old Arminius .38 revolver my brother in law had. The Cylinder release kind of looks like a blend of a Smith and Wesson push foward with the looks of a Charter Arms release
You had me curious because I swore I saw those grips on a ruger pocket pistol as well. So I did some googling. The grips are an *exact copy* of the SP101 grips, although the game doesn't smooth the grip corners out. The GP100 seems to be the inspiration for the actual body of the gun, seems very very similar due to the harder edges that model has (although it too, also can have plastic inset grips like you've noted!). Seems like they took two ruger handguns and smooshed them together. What's interesting is that the serial begins with an RG104. Seems like a intentional reference back to what is most certainly what they've used for inspiration.
I'd love to see a part 2 of this, one of the unique shotguns is based on the Burgess folding shotgun, which is a pretty deep cut in firearms history, I'd like to see how Jonathan reacts to seeing it
Thank god they included a title annotation at 0:45 for Jonathan Ferguson, Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries when he started talking because I still wasn't sure who he was
I got a question about staking a vampire to death. Why does it have to be a wooden stake? According to game logic with the famas weapon, you can use a knife. Why can't a shotgun slug also work or any well aimed bullet to the heart?
I mentioned it in another comment, but the "wooden stake" is supposed to be made of wood from the holly tree, which is connected to Christian beliefs and therefore mortal against creatures of darkness.
Extended pistol barrels of that length are typically done if it is ported with holes drilled vertically for compensating muzzle flip. The frame almost resembles that of a Makarov, but altered in shape for a recoil guide rod and spring assembly on traditional tilting-barrel handguns. By contrast the Makarov's recoil spring uses its fixed-barrel as a guide rod and thus the frame doesn't need that feature. The optic for Perfectly Normal resembles an Elbit Falcon. a 1970's Israeli optic most known for its appearance in Call of Duty Black Ops 1.
Well in german left and right is Links and Rechts, maybe that's it , L and R, for the left and right barrel ^ ^ Not sure if i wrote it right, i'm not German. I love the "firearms" section of this channel.
I'd guess the stake gun having rotating barrels is to make it easier to aim, since you wouldn't have to compensate for it shooting from 3 separate locations. And the breach loading is probably to be a bit faster/ more convenient when a vampire is rushing at you, compared to the process that muzzle loading would probably be
@@jewelsvevo8153 38, I think. 50y after part one in 1888. But I meant that JoJo part 2 was written in 87-89, in response to Jonathan's "I think it's been around since the early 2000's".
At this point can we just make a first person shooter tower defense game of Jonathan Ferguson defending the Royal Armouries against an undead hoard? We can get Simon Pegg to write/co-star. And yes, Simon Pegg can CO-star. I said it.
I do have a theory as to how the FAMAS bayonette could work besides just cosmetic overlook. In the movie Van Helsing, Silver Stakes are used instead of wooden ones to fight Dracula and his brides. So if Silver is just as effective as wood, it could be that the FAMAS bayonette is either made of silver or has a Silver coating?
Uh, I feel like a wooden stake in a shotgun barrel would just be a barrel obstruction or a great way to make a splinter cannon. The actual stake launcher is absurd, but a mechanically operated "launcher" does seem the better bet for such a large mass.
If I remember correctly, the reasoning behind stakes being effective is that corpses suspected of being vampires were nailed into their coffins so they couldn’t rise out, which was more or less co-opted by Van Helsing. Theoretically, the stabbing itself has no effect on the continued life of the vampire, unless it is more of a mystical/ritualistically significant act; unless wood is specifically required by whatever supernatural mechanism is at work, anything capable of piercing the body should be suitable for such function.
Not really - the "wooden stake" was originally mode out of a holly tree, which supposedly was the same wood that Jesus' crown of thrones was made of and therefore the plant was supposed to be sanctified and lethal against vampires and other "spawn of Satan".
8th week pushing for a Resistance, Darkwatch or E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy episode. EDIT: oh MAN, I think Jonathan would hate Darkwatch since you control a vampire in that game and he's obviously a vampire hunter!
of note, and this is just a theory: the stake launcher is likely a modified pile driver, considering they already use gas powered systems to launch what is basically a stake (usually into the ground though)
it wouldn't be very difficult, just modify a shotgun shell to hold a wooden stake, the shotgun would probably need to be a breach-loader to fit the whole thing in though.
Im willing to bet TAOFLEDERMAUS on YT either already has something similar on their channel, or would be willing to test such a projectile in their "mass accelerator" (Shotgun)
Dude - a Bowie knife in the heart kills Dracula. A bayonet should go the trick too. Wood itself wasn't special in the original folklore. They were staking corpses to the ground in order to prevent them from raising when suspected of an unclean death. Making wood special is a relatively modern concept.
I guess the question then would be if a knife or bayonet could do the trick, why would you ever use a wooden stake? I mean theoretically a bullet is just a really small really fast stake as well. Or a regular speargun like he mentioned in the video.
First of all, everything dies from a stake to the heart. Secondly, I remember something about the stake having rules. It should made from whiteoak and silver. Any idea where that came from?
I think someone needs to remind Jonathan that at the end of Dracula, by Bram Stoker, the Count is killed by a knife to the heart (a Kukri knife I believe). Stakes were mainly used on young Vampires.
I love this, firearm detail and vampire lore!! I wonder with the FAMAS bayonette, if it's implied in-game as 'cold iron' and pulling on fey/fairy lore?
2:28 those sights are actually pretty appealing. if anyone made a similar things with maybe a guard around the front post, id be all over it. i seem to be one of an apparent 50 or so people on earth that actually likes peep sights on pistols.
A bit of a switcheroo on stakes and UV light effects on a vampire. Stake through the heart should actually paralyze vampire, while UV light burns them.
This video does lend credibility to my theory that Jonathan (and others like him) are working in secret every day to protect the world from vampires. I'm on to you, Ferguson.
The Cycle: Frontier has some really cool sci-fi firearms with some recognisable elements taken from real gun inspirations, and some interesting actions & reloads! I formally submit my request.
In some depictions of vampires, they can be killed/weakened by silver or pure iron, that's not that common of a weakness, but still sometimes a thing. Maybe bayonet on that Famas is special
The ashes , “Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return,” This speaks to us of both humility and exaltation, of death and new life. The ashes signify our inner fragility and poverty, your committing body back to the ground
Oh hey I think I saw that specific double-barreled flare gun in Deep Rising too. Wish their weird Calico Minigun made more appearances (specifically videogames)
The UV gun is really funny to me because we literally have high powered UV flashlights that would ostensibly be the same thing, but in the game it's gotta be this big bulky super machine.
I would love a 7 days to die episode. many "handmade" guns, weird guns, and iconic guns that fit into a rugged zombie filled world. the guns would be great for an episode!
From seeing the UV weapon, I now am imagining Styropyro rigging up one of his insane UV lasers into one of his huge handheld lasers and using that to completely fry some poor foolish vampires

Jonathan definitely looks like he could be a vampire hunter, he already has the necessary weaponry, all he needs is a Victorian suit
Absolutely hysterical that it took longer to produce this video than it took for Redfall to fall-off.
I'd like to see reactions to the guns of F.E.A.R
Well in german left and right is Links and Rechts, maybe that's it , L and R, for the left and right barrel ^ ^ Not sure if i wrote it right, i'm not German. I love the "firearms" section of this channel.
I'd guess the stake gun having rotating barrels is to make it easier to aim, since you wouldn't have to compensate for it shooting from 3 separate locations. And the breach loading is probably to be a bit faster/ more convenient when a vampire is rushing at you, compared to the process that muzzle loading would probably be
@12:22 Cronenberg Shoutout - love it
So the weaponised UV was done at least in the late 80's in JoJo part 2. In that, the Pillar men also turned to stone from sunlight.
JJBA Part 2 takes place in like the 40's, not sure exactly when but it's at least around WWII
@@jewelsvevo8153 38, I think. 50y after part one in 1888. But I meant that JoJo part 2 was written in 87-89, in response to Jonathan's "I think it's been around since the early 2000's".
Jonathan is the only one keeping this Channel alive lol
I still watch the Zelda videos all the time, and the have over 5m subs, what are you on about.
@@rozwelljones4976 subs don't mean anything when only 10% of them actually watch their videos still.
A commonly repeated myth
2:37 Yeah, "bewildering" is a good word for this game.
To me the centipede pistol looks sort of like the body of a beretta/cz75 with a 1911-ish slide slapped on top
Not really - the "wooden stake" was originally mode out of a holly tree, which supposedly was the same wood that Jesus' crown of thrones was made of and therefore the plant was supposed to be sanctified and lethal against vampires and other "spawn of Satan".
the little "burried... hahaha" made my day.
8th week pushing for a Resistance, Darkwatch or E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy episode.
EDIT: oh MAN, I think Jonathan would hate Darkwatch since you control a vampire in that game and he's obviously a vampire hunter!
Van Jonathan Helsing, Expert Weapons Keeper Specialist by day, Vampire Hunter by night. Need some fanart of this.
of note, and this is just a theory: the stake launcher is likely a modified pile driver, considering they already use gas powered systems to launch what is basically a stake (usually into the ground though)
I'm impressed Dave (or whoever else captures this gameplay) managed to capture this much footage of the game actually working in some capacity.
Can someone please make a stake-launching shotgun as mentioned?
it wouldn't be very difficult, just modify a shotgun shell to hold a wooden stake, the shotgun would probably need to be a breach-loader to fit the whole thing in though.
Don't know if one exists irl, but the movie Blade features a silver stake-launching shotgun that's badass
Im willing to bet TAOFLEDERMAUS on YT either already has something similar on their channel, or would be willing to test such a projectile in their "mass accelerator" (Shotgun)
like in the game blood? ok it was just a stake launcher
Painkiller stake gun says hello! Has Jonathan covered the gun that shoots SHURIKENS and LIGHTNING yet?
Dude - make your own more accurate video
Lol
"But hey I'm not a vampire hunter.."
The way that was said makes me think otherwise Jonathan
Thx Jonathan for exposing yourself to this nightmare of a game and giving out your professional vampire hunter word on it ✌
How would a stake in a shotgun work? Empty the buckshot from shell, then stuff the stake down the front?
Awesome Firearms (& Vampire) Expert Reacts To Redfall’s Guns Video.
This might be the most positive coverage of this game 😂
Johnathan should really look at the game Receiver 2 probably the most realistic portrayal of what operating a pistol is really like.
I think someone needs to remind Jonathan that at the end of Dracula, by Bram Stoker, the Count is killed by a knife to the heart (a Kukri knife I believe).
Stakes were mainly used on young Vampires.
He was stabbed through the heart with a Bowie knife, and slashed across the throat (beheaded?) by a kukri.
@@kevingooley9628 It's been that long since I read it that I only remember he got stabbed through the heart with a knife.
The M-16A2 is an assault rifle however it doesn't have an automatic fire mode, only 3 round burst, semi-auto and safe.
The fact tht we got a Redfall video before a Prey or Dishonored video is an absolute CRIME!
I'd LOVE to see Jonathan check out Ghosts of Tabor's guns!
I love this, firearm detail and vampire lore!! I wonder with the FAMAS bayonette, if it's implied in-game as 'cold iron' and pulling on fey/fairy lore?
I still strongly suggest Jonathan react to the weapons of the order 1886
How does one become a Vampire expert like Jonathan? ;)
Ayo, was that a reference to "eXistenZ" from Johnathan? Didn't think I could like this man more but here we are.
Confirmed! Jonathan Ferguson joins the MCU as Blades Quartermaster!
idk the redfall explanation but the bayonets could be infused with or coated in holy water maybe with garlic mixed in to tick more vampire boxes
I put the video on 2x speed so I could see it in 60fps
The revolver even says "RG" on the side. That'd normally mean Rohm Gmbh but could also allude to Ruger.
This is Jonathan Ferguson, Keeper of Firearms & Artillery & Vampires at the Royal Armouries
Props for the existenz reference. Not many remember that weird movie.
Love Redfall this game is legendary 🙌
Can you do a highlight on the burst-fire rifle that doesn’t burst-fire unless you hold down the fire button
In some depictions of vampires, they can be killed/weakened by silver or pure iron, that's not that common of a weakness, but still sometimes a thing. Maybe bayonet on that Famas is special
I love how his biggest gripe is that some of the stakes aren’t wood! 😂
I love this guy so much
I would love a 7 days to die episode. many "handmade" guns, weird guns, and iconic guns that fit into a rugged zombie filled world. the guns would be great for an episode!
Would John take a look at the guns from metal gear solid 4? It would be an interesting clip to see
From seeing the UV weapon, I now am imagining Styropyro rigging up one of his insane UV lasers into one of his huge handheld lasers and using that to completely fry some poor foolish vampires
shout out to the dude that recorded the gameplay fir taking one for the team and playing redfall
I would like to see Jonathan react to the weapons of Warframe
Well now we need to get Jonathan’s opinions on Vampire games in general. I suggest Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines and Vampyr
