I rode a GT at the AIMExpo demo a few years back. I was surprised how much this engine liked to be reved. The gearing was also much taller than I expected which made it a dream on the short section of Highway we rode. The suspension and brakes also felt really good. Great bike for someone that wants to do long rides but doesn’t want a large bike.

The pistons rise and fall together but have alternate firing . The counter balance arm reduces any vibration associated with twin cylinder engines.
Recap - The pistons work as a single cylinder bike but fire on every second stroke . Rise and fall as one but fire as two ok ...The Catalytic Converter is inside the exhaust end can . So if replaced with an aftermarket pipe could need re -mapping, other wise it could run unevenly and 'pop' on the overun ...and the MPG could be affected . They all rattle a little it is a Rotax single after all. Early white engine bikes did have some issues but should have been sorted on recall. Best models are the ST's 2009-2010 bikes built in Italy. Later GT's built in BMW's plant in the 'Far East' so some quality issues with materials .

I purchased my BMW F 800ST brand new back in 2008 for around $10k as it was a year end close out being the last late 2007 model on the sales floor. It was my first bike and I learned how to ride on this bike. I now have approximately 40k miles on it and the only thing I have done is oil changes every 3000-4000 miles and replace tires about every 7000-8000 miles. I've had all my services performed at BMW dealership and have never been hit with an unexpected bill. I've taken this bike both on highway back country mountain roads including Mexico and this bike can hit the twisties just fine as well as floss through city traffic. The ABS brakes have preformed extremely well and has gotten me out of a few close calls. I've only had to replace the battery and brakes once after 7 years. The only accessories I've added was a connection for trickle charging and I added the pair BMW clam shell side cases that was keyed to my main key. Yes the case expands and locks your helmet and riding gear. The only recurring problem I've had which started about 4 years ago was the end connector that connects to my front headlight does tend to vibrate off over time but I just slide it back on with my hand. One of these days I will buy long slim needle nose plier and crimp that connector end tighter and use some tape if need be.
I often get asked if I would sell my bike. My answer is always no. I'm very fond of this being my first bike and being trouble free. I belong to several meetup riding groups and ride with other kinds of bikes.. I've witness Japanese, American and Italian bikes over time break down with less miles and years compared to mine so for that reason I still think my bike is still worth the price I paid for it and not a penny less. Yes I'm biased as I just purchased my 2nd bike which is a brand new Japanese dual sport because I wanted to learn how to ride off-road and take me places in Baja that the 800 ST can't do. However riding on the way home from the dealer the speedometer stopped working. So to me everything else is a piece of crap.

I’m pretty sure the two cylinders fire in unison, these are parallel twins but they have a 360 degree firing, which is why there is a counterbalance, it counterbalances the weight of both pistons moving together...not as described in the video, great bike tho!

More precisely, with a 360 degree firing order both pistons move up and down together, but only one fires at a time - so one piston is at the top of its exhaust stroke at the same time as the other is at the top of its compression stroke.

One thing to watch out for is, if you operate the bike in temps above 85 degrees F, look for gas stations that sell ethanol free gas. The F800 riders forum has a few threads on it. Why? The original (2007 model year) fuel mapping was probably based on 5% ethanol(E5) and extremely leaned out at idle to pass emissions tests. When the US went to 10% ethanol (2010 or 2012 ?) the energy content was lowered by a small amount. But the fuel map was already very lean, so, using E10, at about 85 degrees F idling becomes very rough and stalling can occur. You don't want a stalled engine in stop-and-go rush hour traffic on a hot day when everyone is already pissed off. I struggled with this problem until, one hot day, I lucked into a gas station with ethanol free premium and the idle immediately smoothed out. Now I just use ethanol free all the time. More info on this series is available on the riders forum. I have had mine for 11 years. My favorite aspect is not having to clean and lube a chain when I get home and it's cold and dark and rainy. Oh, that reminds me, look for one with ABS, which came 2009 and later.

I've had one of these for six years now, an 09 model and this review is spot on, particularly the torque. Use it every day to commute, been round the isle of man a few times, toured around. Added some hyperpro front springs. Only minor gripe is BMW's comedy indicator buttons. Had to have the back wheel bearings assembly replaced free under a recall by BMW. They are dead easy to look after and service yourself too, easy belt change. Showa suspension and brembo brakes. Good reports from the pillion too, whether that has anything to do with the little "hump" in the rear seat and the vibes at a certain RPM I wouldn't know ;)

Own one of these F800S. Why? Belt drive, low centre of gravity, TORQUE, BMW build quality for longevity of ownership. Bit buzzy in the engine dept, would like a bit smoother. Its a pleasure to ride, predictable handling, good stoppers. Tank under the seat is a smart build point, no heavy full tank, feels the same full or empty. They have been making this bike model for a decade and I recon that the only grizzle I have is the cheap forks, should have been inverted. HATE the indicators CANCEL button, STUPID!!!! KMs.... BMWs never worry about kms.

Yep all the GT's engines are built in Asia and there have been some issues with quality control on materials . Better bike is the ST . Better made and built in Berlin , Germany . The best engines seem to be the black ones , early 'white' engines especially the 'S' had issues with cam chain adjusters , they are all noisy . ... Best year seems to be around 2010-2013 . Quite an incredible design of an engine . Joint design with Austrian Rotax company . BMW have used this engine in many bikes . Prior to this they built the single cylinder 650 , that was used in quite a few machines ...Includng a tie in with Aprilia. @@marcoalessandro2034 They are all good bikes , it's just the earlier models did have a few issues with sticking cam chain adjusters. By now it should have been sorted . Just make sure you get a 'real' full service history ok . The design concept was a joint venture with BMW and Rotax. One tip if it has an aftermarket pipe fitted walk away . The cat is in the exhaust tail pipe not in a seperate connector like most bikes . Apart from anything else the exhaust was designed by Lafraconi in Italy , which is a very high quality piece of engineering . If the exhaust has been changed it has to be re-mapped . The later black engined version had work done with adjuster at BMW . Like I said they all rattle a little . If you use a higher viscosity oil on older models that can help ...As always if you ride it and you like it then fine . If you have any doubts then walk away . They were very popular so there will be another one coming along ...Remember at 16.000 miles is the valve clearances and full big service. either it's been done or not . No excuses. It's important and has to be done ...If it's in the history/ manual then fine if not either the dealer will do it or reduce the price of the bike . It cost me at 16.000 miles around £450 not sure what that would be if you're living outside the UK ...Hope this helps ...?

@@tarekghannam5791 . The engine been tuned to the pipe . Like I said the 'Lafraconi system was designed with BMW and the Italian 'Lafraconi' factory . You may get a small amount of extra power ( only because of the weight loss with the aftermarket pipe) . The bike is just fine without any modifications at all . Arakropovic is a good system and if already on the bike then so be it . Maybe you could ask for the 'Lafraconi' original as well. The sound from the original system was designed to be similar to the Boxer' sound ...which it is . Personal opinion I suppose .

      @roverchap 3 роки тому +1

@@steveroberts5941 Correct. 360 degrees is the configuration where both pistons rise and fall together. At TDC one cylinder fires whilst the other is completing the exhaust stroke. This system produces evenly spaced firing pulses and that lovely smooth purr reminiscent of classic British twins. Vibration is a characteristic which can be reduced by counter-blancers as in this BMW. The trend with new parallel twins is for 270 degree firing order which is technically superior but sounds and feels just like a 90 degree V-twin.

They are very powerful and can do a 'real' 140 mph . The torque curve last's forever and it will be as fast as many bigger bikes . Oh yes a technical note ...The Cylinders rise and fall together and have alternate spark firing sequence so as to give it the same sound as a BMW boxer engine . In the middle of the conrod is a counter balance alternate rotating shaft , so for the upsweep of the pistons this clever device swings the other way 'and counter balances any potential vibration , the engine is incredibly smooth so any bike you look and ride should not vibrate maybe some tingle in the handlebars but nothing else ....Have fun . I had to listen 3 times to make sure I wasn't hearing wrong. The description you gave for the motor crank throw is for a 180-degree crank. NOT a 360-degree crank. A 360 degree crank has both piston rising and falling together. Not one up-one down as you stated. So, while the pistons are on the downstroke, one is on the power stroke and the other is on the intake. The F800s, my 02 Triumph Bonneville, and most all old Brit twins, were 360 -degree cranks.

This bike was never 15000$,...not even with extras. It was 12200$ list price (at least here in Europe), but you could get a brand new one for around 10000. People didn't want to buy it, because the transmission was so clunky, that potential customers believed it wouldn't last. BMW had to do a factory recall to add a dampening system, which didn't solve the problem but made it tolerable. The bike was an entry level model with a fairly cheap suspension (to cut production costs). The engine however is glorious, and the bike is very nice for what it is. It's not worth over paying though, just because of the BMW label. People are still asking between 4000 and 5000$ for (even high mileage) F800S/T's,...which is just ridiculous considering that it is a 16 year old bike, that wasn't that expensive to begin with.

It topped out at $14++ traction control, heated grips, luggage, electric suspension. That's on the road dealer fees, road tax, reg paperwork.

@@raywite6665 Maybe in the US. can't confirm. But as I said,...that was sticker price, which basically no one paid, because the bike wasn't selling as expected at all. As I said, It's not worth over paying, but I understand that you have to make a living. Cheers.

Your explanation of a 360 degree firing order twin is wrong. Both pistons go up and down together so one cylinder fires each time both are at TDC.

Yep, thanks for pointing that out. I didn't catch it before it got published and we're gonna have to live with that one. Well, I guess in 900 hours of videos there are going to be a couple flubs.

1000cc and 100Hp? That my be what a Harley does but not a real bike. 1000cc does 200Hp these days.

Rotax made the F650GS models long before they made these twins. This is not a very accurate video.

BMW literally copied the TRX850 with the F800S. The TRX 270 Degree, the BMW 360 degree. The TRX sounds way, way better.
