    I have worked in a machine shop in a third world country where we had to do repairs similar to this you do what you have to do to get the thing running again. Although our lathes etc had coolant and we had centre drills etc it is a bit dodgy drilling a hole with a drill poking out that far without using a centre drill first. The finish would have been much better with coolant rather than all whiskery. One of our most common repairs was arc welding conrod journals on crankshafts as they had been worn down so much usually on 1 journal only that you could not buy undersize bearings to suit. I made cyl head valve inserts out of old truck axles. You do what you have to do.

      It will not last more than fifty miles and after that the whole pump will be trashed beyond repair. That blue lobe lost its case hardening, will get eaten away by the plunger and the shavings will absolutely destroy the pump in minutes.

    Interesting to note the colour of the cam lobe after the welding process ((blue..) not to mention the weld spatter. Could this process have affected the original hardness of the cam face, I wonder? Respect is due for a workable short term repair with well worn out tooling! Keep up the good work, boys!

      @rumenivanovtzonchev4072 Рік тому +13

      Rarely shoddy work. They do not use coolant. The diameter of the welded part was measured by eye, not with a micrometer. Finally he ran the rasper over the friction surfaces of the shaft, which are specially machined to produce a hard layer - he injured this layer. The metal he uses for the extra part is soft and don't work. If he is going to use a weld (which weakens the metal anyway) why not weld the original part? If I had a worker like that, I would fire him immediately

    Good job.
    Sometimes westerners forget that what is available two states away is nothing compared to two or three provinces away...provinces the size of some countries or larger. Bic-lighter "throw away and get another" people have a panel truck delivery from their favorite seal and bearing shop.
    You make do with what you have to work with. Outstanding skills. Those skills don't have free shipping. They certainly do not have a grade-8 Fastenal shop & watehouse in the next town.
    The original part and original part replacement is always the best. Better than this reworked part. Westerners can go get it like buying chewing gum. Of course this is not going to last as long. Yes it will break again. But you know what, for now it works. For now it gets the owner out of a serious pinch. For now it buys him a little more to enable "free shipping." He still makes a living while waiting for overland express.
    Good job!!!

    • @benovision6325
      @benovision6325 Рік тому +3

      Yes that's correct. The cam shaft is a forged metal component with a very definite arrangement of the metallic crystals, nothing of which you will have in a chaotic metal weld! Its doomed to fail and very naïve engineering.

    • @alexanderSydneyOz
      @alexanderSydneyOz Рік тому +8

      It is not 'doomed to failure', and neither of you two have any reason to say that. Every time one of these videos is posted, there are 100 'experts' saying 'oh it won't work', or 'It'll break', and so on.
      Well, this is a camshaft. It really isn't subject to much torque, so I see no reason to say it will "break pretty soon". Why would it?
      Most likely this shaft broke due to some other part of the motor seizing and apply WAY too much torque to the cam in the process. ie atypical forces.

      Was good lathe work and was very true after
      However the welding didn’t make that good of a connection and the arcs need to be long to create anywhere near enough heat to be able to join them
      Could put shaft in an oven for 5 hours on 450 degrees to make it one piece. Or could turn a whole new one

      Clearly you are missing the entire point of the video. The video is the product and the money maker. The shaft is simply a way to the means and the means are the views. 🤪

      @@sar9907if you install this contraption in a real injection pump, it will last fifty miles at the most and when it fails it will kill the extremely expensive pump. It's a terrible idea. The plungers of the pump ride on the cams on that shaft. Without proper case hardening they get eaten away super quick. And then you have all those shavings in the pump. It will be destroyed in minutes.

    I know they are poor but a centre drill really would work wonders instead of a normal drill to start off. They also seem to not worry about safe practice against body injuries>

    Maybe I haven't got a clue, but number one question where is the cutting oil?

      No excuse. If they don't have proper cutting oil, then used transmission fluid will work better than nothing at all.

    That part won't last long. The weld is always a problem. The seam is harder than this cast steel and the cast steel was not preheated either, which makes it porous and will sooner or later burst. The work has been carried out in a completely pointless and absolutely catastrophic manner. The dimensions must fit to the thousandth or the bearing point will be disturbed. But since the accuracy of the machine is also in doubt, the time is wasted

      drierteam Godi. Although my thoughts on this repair are the same as yours what other alternative has anyone got when it's needed urgently and there is no availability without waiting for weeks even months, probably this is a very old pump and spares almost obsolete.

    That was interesting to watch. They could have used some cutting oil to prevent some of the heating of the part and make it easier to cut, but it turned out OK. The weld rod material is the same as the camshaft so it should hold. I would have started the drilling with a smaller drill to pilot the bigger drill and that would have made it easier to drill out. Nice job otherwise.
