  • A very windy but enjoyable session spent at Castlethorpe on the West Coast Mainline where we see plenty of services from London Northwestern Railway, Avanti West Coast and freight from Freightliner, GBRF and DB Cargo UK.
Castlethorpe station was opened by the London and Northwestern Railway in 1882 for passenger traffic, although a year earlier in 1881 it was opened for freight traffic. The platforms are still in place to this day.
The goods facilities were withdrawn on 6th July 1964 and the station was fully closed on 6th September 1964.
The station platforms will remain in place but the village will never see a train calling there ever again, with the rate in which the surrounding villages are expanding there are some calls to rebuild the former station at Roade just north up the line.
For several years right up to the 1990s there was a small siding located just south of the main road bridge that was used for locos acting as Thunderbird engines.
My next rush hour film will be from Ashton on the West Coast Mainline.
