  • A review of "Misty" a Cape Dory Typhoon Weekender in Charlotte Harbor FL. John has restored this little boat to near new condition and sails her several times a week.
    My apologizes to John I misspelled his name in the ending credits, it should be John Bremer, sorry John.

    Hi, thanks for that great video.
    My wife and I sailed our Typhoon Weekender all over Gardiner’s Bay, Long Island. I think the Typhoon was a beautiful looking boat and it was a great sailor. My wife loved to fish, so I would sail while she would troll off the stern. Many times we would bring fish back for dinner! The typhoon was sturdy and faithful, a great boat to have. I am 83 now, and handicapped, so our sailing days are over but I still get a nice feeling when I see Carl Alberg’s creation in the water!

    I once lived in the town where this boat was built and my nephew actually worked at Cape Dory. I clearly remember the first Cape Dory ever built, a 10' cat rigged sailing dinghy. I only sailed a Typhoon once and that was more than 40 years ago. But I still remember it as one of the nicely balanced and enjoyable sailboats I've ever sailed! Carl Alberg knew how to design a great sailboat and Cape Dory knew how to build one!

    Excellent video about America's littlest yacht. A true lovely little gem of a sloop on the water. Never a bad line on her.

    Can't wait till May! I picked up a real 'barn find' last June...a Typhoon day sailer, hull #99...it was literally in a barn in New London, CT in near-immaculate condition. It just needed a little sail and fore-stay repair. Looks like a total gas to sail. You'll see it on the water sailing out of Port Jeff harbor for most of the spring and summer.

    My Typhoon "Muse" was completely re-fitted by my shop two years ago. She's just been a wonderful boat to learn to sail solo in. We've sailed comfortably in 20- 25kts with full main only and she just heads right into it. Sweet girl.

    It's great to see another refit/restoration of a Weekender. And it is especially great to see that Misty's appointments excluding the roller furling genoa are original features which keep her so classic.

    I just started to restore one from 1972, hull #241. Only cabin top core is soft. Deck needs new anti slip and an entire paint job. Bright work is beyond saving. Need to find a good wood crafter to help me cutting all sections. I hopefully get her back in the water next summer. thanks for sharing your story.

    I've never had a Cape Dory of any kind, but I had a Pearson Ariel, 25 foot on deck, also an Alburg design. So sweet sailing of a boat, a testimony to his design philosophy.

    Perhaps the most beautiful of all sailboat under 20ft, but like all Arlberg boats with that lovely overhang, they are indeed a bit tender and can scare the uninitiated. The famous "stiffness" does not present itself until the boat heels to about 15-17 degrees. After that, they're like a wall. For initial stability, as well as sailing on it's feet when other are reefing, I'll stay with my Montgomery 17.

    I viewed a lot of videos about the Typhoon, then I went out and bought one. Great little boat, but I wonder why very few have boom vangs installed. A buddy of mine installed one on my Typhoon and WOW it made a world of difference.

    • @fpdima
      @fpdima 4 роки тому

      @Eric Gates Not sure - could be for both. But I would definitely get a boom vang going at the very least. Night and Day as for as I'm concerned.

    • @Boatingzen
      @Boatingzen  4 роки тому +1

      Good idea. These boats are a bit old school and were designed before widespread use of vangs. Not even sure they had rigid vangs back then. No reason not to if it works. Thanks for the thoughts

    Wayne....I commented on your previous video about buying storm damaged boats. In 1990 I purchased a 1969 Carl Alberg designed Kittiwake 23. I sailed it for a year and then brought her home for restoration. It took four months of hard work but I totally restored that great design and sailed it hard for several years. I raced her many times during those years and won many races. A friend built a model of my Kittiwake many years ago and it's here in my home office. I also have a model of the Irwin 31 that I mentioned previously as well of a model of the Karie Elite 37 that I owned. Prior to hauling the Kittiwake I built a cradle from 6" square tubing and had it galvanized.....I still have that cradle! Today I own a 1996 Beneteau 42s7, which was recently damaged in the foul weather that hit during the Dauphin Island Race on Mobile Bay this past April 25. She's been in the boatyard for two months for repairs caused by that storm-thankfully she is just about finished. I'm enjoying your videos. By the way, Good Old Boat Magazine ran one of my articles this past March....it is about a Pearson 365.

    I had a CD typhoon for many years. I sailed her all over Lake Superior many times. When I came down with cancer I sold her because I didn't wish to burden my spouse down with getting rid of after I was gone. Well that was nineteen years ago. I barely survived stage three ovarian cancer. Yes I'm intersex.
    Cleaning out the basement last month I even found a north sail spinnaker hanging from the rafters. In addition I've been digging out bits and pieces of sailing stuff and the need to sail has captured me once more.
    As we still live on the lake and thought about purchasing a CD 25D or 270 or even a typhoon. I've even thought about an F27 trimaran but that is more than I can afford.
    Now that I've stopped taking a pain killers from chemotherapy nerve damage my energy has returned. In as much as my children were young when I came down with the cancer I thought it would be great fun to teach them to sail. In addition our grandson needs to learn about the wonderful world of sailing.

      Glad to hear you are recovering. I once did a survey for a 90 yo man who had 3 heart attacks, his doctor told him to stop sailing. A year later he was buying another boat, his comment "fuck the doctors I am going sailing!" You only live once live it the way you want and have fun! Thanks for sharing and get out and teach those grand kids the joy of sailing!

    • @johndangelo3989
      @johndangelo3989 3 роки тому

      It does not have flotation and a 900 pound keel so it would sink, it is very hard to tip over because of that keel. I sailed mine for years and never had a knockdown.

    great video and information. I'm a newbie searching for boats and I'm based around the Port of Rochester & Finger Lakes region, NY. While I think I want to start with a 28'+ weekend cruiser, this video and the comments are making me seriously consider a smaller pocket cruiser and the savings e.g. home garage storage, easy rigging, simplicity, etc. That being said, I assume the mast is easy to step and de-step? It would be nice to have a boat I can motor around the NYS Canal and then get the mast up for Lake sailing at an instant. I would enjoy thoughts from you and other Cape Dory owners.

    • @Boatingzen
      @Boatingzen  8 років тому

      +Gregory Simmons The Typhoon is a great boat but not really trailer friendly in the sense of doing weekend launches. I am not sure about how easy it is to drop and reset the rig as it was not really originally set up for that. Of course it can be done. I would check with the Cape Dory users group and see what some of the folks there say. Thanks and good luck with it.
