- What is death? Our materialist science reduces everything to matter, materialist science in the West says that we are just meat, we’re just our bodies. So when the brain is dead, that’s the end of consciousness, there is no life after death, there is no soul; we just rot and are gone. Actually, many honest scientists should admit that consciousness is the greatest mystery of science and that we don’t know exactly how it works. The brain is involved in it some way but we’re not sure how. It could be that the brain generates consciousness the way a generator makes electricity, if you hold to that paradigm, then of course you can’t believe in life after death, when the generator’s broken, consciousness is gone. But it’s equally possible that the relationship - and nothing in neuroscience rules it out - that the relationship is more like the relationship of the TV signal to the TV set, and in that case, when the TV set is broken, of course the TV signal continues. And this is the paradigm of all spiritual traditions, that we are immortal souls temporarily incarnated in these physical forms.
If we want to understand consciousness, the last people we should ask are materialist scientists. Instead, we should look at ancient cultures, like the Egyptians, who highly valued dream states. Many ancient cultures around the world used hallucinogenic plants to understand consciousness and expand their minds.
However in today's society, visionary plants are highly illegal because they promote a state of consciousness that does not agree with the agenda of profit. Substances, like coffee, alcohol, sugar and pharmaceuticals, are forced upon the population, but possession of even small quantities of cannabis, Ayahuasca or psilocybin will land you in jail. If we do not recognize the right of adult sovereignty over consciousness, then we can NOT claim to be free.
Look at what our moderns state of consciousness has done. We have destroyed the natural gifts of earth in pursuit of short-term, selfish gain. We must reconnect with spirit immediately or else we will encounter disaster. Visionary plants could be the remedy for our current sickness.

I'm a bit confused by the response to this video. I understand that Graham Hancock has some ideas that may seem odd or baseless, however, I don't see why some people think that means this channel is deemed "no longer educational". My God, if we can't listen to the ideas of another person and consider what they might offer, even if we disagree, how on earth can we ever expect to learn anything at all. Take what you can from this video, reflect, ask yourself questions, and move on.

I mean his ideas are beyond the pale no doubt, but he is pretty meticulous in his research. He uses evidence and cites his sources and his conclusions follow logic. Even for the parts that don't have evidence he makes that known and they are at a minimum plausable. I've heard many other scholars dismiss his work but never seen them actually dispute it. Honestly if you aren't willing to hear it, you don't have to. You are only limiting yourself. If it is true what Graham says we are more powerful than we know and are in for a good time. If he is wrong than we are still where we are now. So what are you even losing here?

A high dose of 5.5 grams changes my life. I did shrooms more times than I can count but wasn't until I did that dose and closed my eyes that I realized the Beauty of it all. I was brought to the light and returned with my soul. I didn't understand it at the time. Now I have quit smoking excessive amounts of weed after 23 years. I found God for the first time and now I found Jesus. It sounds crazy because that's what I thought my whole life when the rare person spoke about it. It's real and we need faith to save our souls and this planet. The earth didn't start this downward spiral until faith in Christ was lost in the 60s. Believe and live for those around you not yourself. Selfishness causes stress and dependence on substances to make ourselves feel better. I was suicidal merely months ago now I am happier than I ever could have imagined and so is everyone I reflect that too.

The very fact that people are waking up is the same reason we see so much turmoil in every area of life right now. We consist of both ego and soul. The ego is like a child and is fearful of this big shift it feels. It is afraid once the souls of the human race begin to fully realize and step forward, there will no longer be a use for the ego. So we see division, we see people screaming to be heard and getting more and more extreme in their thoughts and actions. Driven by ego, we see people clinging to a billion identities trying to grab a piece of something in order for the ego to stay alive. The fallacy is that ego and soul are separate from one another. The ego is the soul in its most dormant state, it acts as a cocoon until the soul is ready to let it’s light shine on the world. While all this craziness is going on, take this time to go inward. Take this time to be the love you want to see in the world. Love yourself and love everyone around you. Your love, even if you don’t see the immediate effects, will help others wake up as well. The more people that wake up, the closer we get to the boiling point of a consciousness shift. The best news of all? We will all get there and it will be glorious! So when you see the deteriorating situation, use it as a reminder to spread love, inwardly and outwardly. Much love, namaste.

As an agnostic atheist, who does not believe in spirituality or a soul, I find so much good in this video. Secular humanism is the way to go. There is so much we are unaware of with our conscious and the universe, so many beneficial plants and drugs, so much devastation. It feels as if my fellow atheists in the comments miss the larger point of the video. The damage to our planet and us not having the right to our own consciousness.
But what does ecology and sustainable living have to do with drugs? NOTHING. It's completely unrelated.
kyjo72682 I am searching very hard to find the potential for any evidence of the connection in peer reviewed journals and I am failing. I will continue trying. I am finding ones on "pharmaceuticals", but thats note quite the conversation happening here. Until then, I will present a hypothetical one. Given the findings between hallucinogen etic drugs and overall well being (many studies on this) I would make the argument that if people used these for a better sense of wellbeing they might release their dependency on things that are bad for themselves and the environment. For example, meat. The meat industry is one of the greatest contributors to global warming and there is correlation between processed meats and cancer. As such, but using these drugs it may decrease the dependency on this and other foods that are addictive and release dopamine, thus creating greater sustainability. Like I said, the connection has no real evidence to support my hypothesis. It is just a spur of the moment thought. I will give it more thought and more research and get back to you. Lack of evvidence does not necessarily mean something is incorrect, it just is lesss reason to believe something is correct.

I honestly believe that you can achieve new states of consciousness without the use of hallucinogenics. It’s just a smaller, controlled, but rather progressive leap (kinda like when you’re trying to loose weight the proper way, without crazy diets). What a great talk regardless!

If consciousness is not a product of the brain, why would we not encounter consciousness without a brain? Why do you need chemicals that disrupt the normal function on the brain to have a psychedelic experience? I don't claim I know how or what consciousness is but that a brain is involved is totally obvious. So is it weird to state that if a brain is involved this might be an essential ingredient for consciousness? Thinking that a consciousness can exist without a brain is pure speculation, there is not even the least evidence for such a claim or even a idea. It's all wishful thinking by people who fear the idea that consciouness ceases to be when the brain stops being. All the evidence we have shows that we are bodies and don't have a soul. You may think otherwise but don't make a mockery out of good arguments you disagree with based on nothing else but your own personal beliefs.
Can we imagine a world where the war on consciousness did not start hundreds of years ago and imagine where this world could have been.

There seems to be this slow collective spirtual evolution. It's happening quite fast in the grand scheme. There's still a war against it but the push for a higher consciousness seems to be stronger thus far.

After Skool Well I'm happy you got to it. I like Graham's work far more than Alan Watts simply because Grahams was more practical and relateable to me. Though Alan is still worth a listien. I got far more answers with Graham. His research on the shamanic roots of religions and many other missing links brought a lot of clarity to things about western culture I had always wondered about.
Most of what Hancock does ends up being hogwash, because he jumps to astounding conclusions and seems too careless even to come up with sound stories. (His work is exciting, but he ruins it for himself, every time.)
On the other hand, the points in this talk are mostly valid, and there is a near global war on the differently conscious.
Thank AFTER SKOOL. Did you know that school/skool originate in old Greek (skhole), where it referred mainly to leisure; what you had time for when not working; but can also connote lectures and places where leisurely discussion took place.
IMO skhole should recapture it's original meaning, because with the advent of the internet (well, actually propelled by paperbacks and public libraries) school happens as much outside of that institution as within it.
While I disagree with your sentiments on Hancock, I can see how his rabbiting and excitement could wash some people up. Personally, I find it endearing.
I agree with your belief on schooling though.Frankly, I see the modern compulsive school as an insult to learning. I think it should be casual and consensual. Press too much and you squish the young into apathy or worse. I don't see how divorcing from the world to "learn" helps anyone but control freaks. The current deviation could stand learn from it's roots.

Soul or no soul, we should be free to experiment with our consciousness as long as we can prove we are medically fit. Nobody stops you from drinking, driving motor vehicles, bungee jumping, skydiving, snorkeling, mountaineering, river-rafting, professional rugby and boxing, and war is considered "patriotic". Thank you After Skool... this is paradigm shaking information and clarity. Bless you. The truth is that we do not all need Ayahuasca to find this truth. Graham probably does because scientists are often too left brain and cannot easily access their spirit... much more apparent in the right brain. The way without drugs or helping plants is simple. Set up an altar. Put photos of your beloved saints or teachers on it, get a safe candle maybe some essential oils or incense for the smell, and then just sit straight back before it. Let your breath be your teacher. Let it bring you to a peace inside that is nothing about the events of the day or the pain in your knee. All the subconscious issues will arise then to your mind and let them come without judgement or emotion. Let everything keep coming up from a well inside the mind and after a while, the bubbles of thoughts stop. Silence arises from the depths of space and behind it a deep, lasting bliss arises. Do this every day at the SAME time for even 30 minutes and your spirit will begin to guide your life. Blessings. "YOU" are what you have been seeking.

Take a whole bunch of dissociating hallucinogenic and then ask yourself:
Is the brain really the whole of consciousness?
What I found to be very interesting is that this dissociation effect continues long afterward the "hallucination." This is likely why people who fear the "dissociated mind" have made these drugs illegal, and continue to claim they have no medical purposes. As dissociating my mind has been center to my battle against suicidal depression, allowing me to identify that my brain traps itself in a 'negative loop' and offering me the right mindset to fix that problem. It is a long and difficult battle, and I often will still revert to chemical 'fixes' at times... but still kicking.
Not bad for someone who thinks on their own death daily, thank you shrooms!

For those curious why it helped - It made me recognize that my brain has several 'holographic models' of the universe built within it....
Everyone has one or more of these models, they form from the moment you are born as you begin to experiment with the universe. As you grow older you start to use these models to try and predict what will happen around you, and this will further reinforce or trim said models depending on the accuracy of your predictions. There is even the risk that we will stop adjusting our holographic models, allowing our little egos to dictate: 'We know everything, this model is already perfect...'
Alas, every Model is WRONG.
Dissociation allows me to witness how my brain is using multiple of these models to feed my consciousness possible projections of the future. If something was wrong, even something as little as the body complaining about not eating, the brain would begin feeding me projection that all show 'failure' as the only possible outcomes. As many things that can upset my brain are far outside of my control, gut not producing the right amount of serotonin for example, this is a very... very... big pain in my fucking arse!
But knowing helps, I can slap my brain around a little better and yell at it to use better models!
Or... go get a sandwich so the damn thing feels a bit better, you will be surprised how much a sandwich fixes.

Never knew there was a debate over this... I am going to have add 'disassociate' to my list of 'blurry terminology' given this:-

The reason I find it 'blurry' is simple:
I witnessed my own thought patterns on psilocybin... as if I was an outside presence looking within. It is also a substance that commonly puts me into a sense similar to Cotard delusion, where I often am quite content to simply lay there with my eyes close and... well enjoy the slow death of my body. I am also constantly chasing something that occurred one time: Laying beside my lover, we became nothing more then swirling specks of energy that mixed through each other to become something unique and very special but sadly had to separate back into two separate but forever-altered galaxies....
Those experiences scream Depersonalization or Derealization:
1) I was clearly a separate personality from the thought patterns, in order to look onto them from an external viewpoint*
2) As I lay there slowly but peacefully decaying, I feel no connection to the life that flesh will go on to live... or not
3) My physical form wasn't humanoid... it was a swirling spiral of love and light
There is always a sense of 'I,' at least as a contentious thought, but an alien "I" that would sometimes find the concept of being a living, breathing humanoid laughable.
*Was quite informative to watch, the collection of thoughts that make up 'you' will actually 'die' many times throughout a single day and a new 'you' will take it's place every time... oblivious to the death that just occurred.

I have never taken a psychedelic or psychotropic substance in my life - and yet I have had projective and prescient experiences. That and other experiences are reasons I could never swallow strict materialism.
