Thank you. Great video and almost informative. But your weak spot is the same as everyone else's weak spot. Ok, we have different standards of cleanliness. Isn't that only half of the of the info we need? Don't I need to know when one level of cleanliness is sufficient and more cleaning is a waste of time? Don't I need to know which level of cleanliness is is suitable for a particular application? But insufficient for another application? In what situations do I need a specific level of cleanliness and not another? I blast for a living and then paint. How do I know which cleanliness level I need to solve the problem at hand? Nobody wants to share that info and unfortunately your in the same boat as the rest of them. Where do I go to get the rest of the missing info? Please help. Chris
Chris, the following comes from KTA President Ken Trimber: Chris, thanks for the feedback on the video. Note that selecting the type of surface preparation for different coating systems and ex posure environments was outside of the scope of this video, but you ask a good question. A lot goes into determining the degree of cleaning and coating system to apply on a project, all of which is considered when specifications are being developed, but you can find some general guidance in a number of sources. The product data sheet for the primer you’re applying will give you the cleaning requirements for the product. SSPC also publishes paint system specifications in their Volume 2. If you look up the system, it will tell you the degree of cleaning required. They also provide educational information in Volume 1, Good Painting Practice. In it, they describe the coating systems commonly used in different industries, and typically include the degree of cleaning required. On a project-specific basis, you can also ask the coating manufacturer for their recommendations.

Your coating system individual manufacturers specifications should note the required surface prep needed to ensure the integrity of the coating you will be applying. Had to edit this lol , just saw Ken's answer , in my experience always meet or exceed the manufacturer's spec and you will have a quality end product.
